Lara spent her Monday doing what she did best—teaching.

Her day flowed with the usual rhythm, moving from one classroom activity to the next, smiling at her students’ boundless energy. She sang with them, helped them trace letters, tied shoelaces, wiped tears, and laughed along with the kind of unfiltered joy only five-year-olds could bring.

By lunchtime, she opted for food delivery, too tired to go out. While eating inside the faculty room, surrounded by the low hum of chatter and clinking utensils, her thoughts began to drift.

Specifically, to Reagan.

What were the odds? she thought, poking at her meal with her fork. Out of all the places in the city, he had to live in the same building.

And not just any part of the building—he stepped out of the private elevator earlier, which she knew was only accessible to penthouse residents.

Well, that shouldn’t be surprising. He does own a tech company, after all.

She took a bite of her food and chewed slowly, her mind drifting again.

The early evening air was warm and slightly humid and the sun had already dipped beyond the skyline, casting a warm orange hue over the street. Reagan unlocked his car, and opened the passenger door for Lara. “Thanks,” Lara said with a small smile as she got in. Once Reagan slid into the driver’s seat, she gave him the address of the place she had in mind. Reagan nodded, punching it into the GPS. “But you sure about this spot?” Reagan asked as he start the engine. Lara grinned. “Very sure. Trust me, it’s not fancy, but the food will change your life.” Reagan glanced sideways at her, one brow raised. “That’s a bold claim.” She only smiled in return, eyes glinting with mischief. “You’ll see.” The traffic, unfortunately, wasn’t on their side. It was rush hour, and the streets were packed. Cars inched forward in a slow, honking symphony. But strangely, the time didn’t feel wasted. They talked—nothing deep, just bits and pieces. Music filled the silence in between. The conversati

When they finished their food, Lara pulled him along to the next stalls, pointing at skewers. “Okay, what do we have here? Hmm.. we got isaw, betamax, pig’s ears, adidas—” Reagan stopped short. “Wait. ‘Adidas’?” “Chicken feet,” she replied like it was no big deal. His brows furrowed. “Why is it called that?” She shrugged. “Because it looks like a tiny shoe? I don’t know. We should just eat.” She picked up a stick of betamax, dipped it in barbecue sauce and handed it to him. “Here, try this first.” Reagan eyed it warily. “What is it?” She grinned. “Coagulated pork blood.” He blinked at her. “That’s… very specific. Is it safe?” “Of course it is. I've been eating this for years and look—I’m still alive. C’mon, try it. You won’t regret it, promise.” He gave her a long, suffering look but eventually took a cautious bite. Lara watched his face closely, lips twitching. “I don’t like it,” he said flatly. She burst out laughing. Reagan narrowed his eyes. “You’re enjoying this.”

It was a call. From Lucas. The name alone made her stomach twist. Why was he calling her now? At this hour? Her instinct was to silence the phone and shove it back in her pocket, but she was frozen. Reagan’s eyes narrowed slightly as he noticed the shift in her expression. “Everything okay?” She looked up and forced a small smile, shaking her head. “It’s nothing.” The phone stopped ringing… only to start again a few seconds later. Lara exhaled sharply, the burrito now forgotten in her hand. She glanced at Reagan, apologetically. “I’ll just take this. Give me a sec,” Lara walked a few steps away, toward a less crowded corner of the street. She hesitated for a beat before answering. “Lucas?” she asked, already on edge. “Why are you calling?” But it wasn’t his voice that greeted her. [“Hi, um… sorry. I’m not Lucas,”] a woman said on the other end. Lara blinked, confusion knitting her brows. “Then who are you? Why do you have his phone?” The woman hesitated, then replied vagu

It took nearly half an hour before they reached the bar. Reagan parked by the curb, casting a glance at Lara before they stepped out of the car. The place was packed and loud—music pounding from the speakers, laughter spilling over the chatter, the scent of alcohol and smoke heavy in the air. Reagan instinctively moved closer, his hand gently resting on her shoulder, shielding her from the jostling crowd. Lara was grateful for the small gesture. Her nerves were already frayed, and his quiet steadiness was the one thing keeping her grounded. When they reached the counter, Lara spotted them immediately. Why was she here? Did Lucas call h

December had just begun, and the air was colder than ever. The chill seeped through the walls, making the house feel emptier than usual. Lara sat curled up on the sofa, her laptop balanced on her lap as she worked on her lesson plans. The soft glow of the screen illuminated her face, but her eyes kept drifting toward the wall clock. 8:15 PM. Lucas should have been home by now. He usually arrived by eight, but lately, his schedule had become unpredictable. Some nights, he came home late. Other nights, not at all. She told herself not to overthink it—he was a busy man, after all. But deep down, worry gnawed at her, mingling with frustration. They barely saw each other as it was. And now, even the little time they had under the same roof was slipping away. It was ironic, really. They were married, yet they lived like strangers. She let out a sigh, trying to shake off the unease settling in her chest. Was he doing this on purpose? Avoiding her at all costs? Did he truly hate

The meal was silent and tasteless. She wasn’t even sure if she was full or just forcing herself to eat. Once she finished, she cleaned up, then returned to the living room to continue her lesson plans. But no matter how much she tried to concentrate, her mind kept drifting back to Lucas. Three years. Three long years since she and Lucas got married. And in all those years, nothing had changed. No, that wasn’t true. Things had changed. They had gotten worse. Their marriage was an empty shell—two people bound by paper, living under the same roof but in entirely different worlds. It was a cruel joke—a one-sided love story where she was the only fool still clinging to hope. Lucas had never treated her right. He never raised a hand against her, but his coldness was a different kind of torment. His words, his actions—everything was designed to push her away, to break her. And he had succeeded, countless times. And yet, she stayed. Why? Was it love? Or just an unhealthy obsession?

The school day had ended, and most of the children had already gone home. Lara sat in the waiting area, keeping an eye on the last few students still waiting for their guardians when a familiar voice called out to her. “Lara!” She turned just in time to see Ali striding toward her, her designer handbag swinging at her side. “Are you done with class? I’m dying for milk tea,” Ali announced dramatically, flipping her hair as if the mere thought of waiting any longer was unbearable. Lara chuckled, shaking her head at her best friend’s antics. Ali had been a handful, to say the least, ever since college, but over the years, Lara had learned to handle her quirks with patience. She was high-maintenance, outspoken, occasionally dramatic, and a little too confident for her own good, but beneath all that, she was sweet and fiercely loyal. Life was never boring with her around. Lara turned to her assistant. “Maera, can you stay with the kids while they wait for their parents?” Maera no

Sunday came quietly. A soft rain tapped against the windows that morning, the sky gray and overcast—a perfect excuse to stay in. And Lara did.She spent the entire day cooped in the comfort of her space. She finished an entire novel curled up on the couch, laughed softly at a feel-good rom-com on Netflix, and even dusted off her baking tools to make banana muffins, letting the sweet scent of sugar and vanilla fill the kitchen like a warm hug.By evening, she sat in the study room, her laptop open as she worked on her lesson plans for the week. The quiet hum of the city beyond the glass walls offered a sense of peace. She tried—genuinely tried—not to think about Lucas. And yet, no matter how much she tried to fill her day, the ache in her chest lingered. It wasn’t as sharp as before—just a dull throb, like a bruise healing under the skin. She missed him. Or maybe not him, but the hope she once clung to.After all, moving on wasn’t as easy as telling herself to let go. She admit to tha

The supermarket was just a fifteen-minute drive away, and she spent nearly two hours picking out what she needed—snacks, frozen meals, fresh produce, cleaning supplies, toiletries, and other essentials. Her cart was full, but she didn’t mind. It felt good, normal even, to be doing something for herself again. She wheeled two full boxes of groceries out to the car and loaded them into the trunk herself, not thinking twice about the weight. Years of being strong on her own had prepared her for this. On the way home, she made a quick detour through the McDonald's drive-thru. She ordered without hesitation: one-piece chicken with rice, a Quarter Pounder with cheese, Chicken McNuggets, BFF fries, a McFloat, and a Mango Passion Fizz. Not exactly the healthiest meal, but she didn’t care. She was starving—and craving something familiar. Something that didn’t require her to try so hard. Comfort food for a woman finally learning to comfort herself. She drove back to her condo and parked in

Lara left the house without seeing Lucas. She didn’t know where he had gone—maybe to his room, maybe outside. She didn’t care to find out. She didn’t even want to. She had nothing left to say. All she wanted now was to be somewhere she could finally breathe. The drive to her condo was a quiet blur of city streets and red traffic lights. The sun had risen fully now, casting a soft glow over the skyline. As she turned into the underground parking of the high-rise building, a sense of detached calm washed over her. Her new reality had begun. After finding a space, she parked, turned off the engine, and took a deep breath. She got out, opened the trunk, and pulled out her suitcase. The wheels of her luggage echoed in the garage as she walked toward the elevator and pressed the button to her floor.Once the doors slid open, she stepped into the sleek, modern hallway and made her way to her unit. She unlocked the door and was immediately greeted by the crisp scent of lavender and lemon—prob

The rest of breakfast passed with shallow conversation. Evelyn and Lily chatted about upcoming travel plans while Lara nodded politely, responding when needed, but mostly stayed quiet. Her mind was miles away. When the meal ended, she stood up and politely addressed the family.“Thank you for the breakfast, Mom, Dad. But I think I should be heading home.”“Oh, why so soon?” Evelyn frowned, touching her arm gently. “Can’t you and Lucas stay a bit longer? It’s so rare that we have you both here.”Lara’s expression softened. “I’m really sorry, Mom,” she said gently. “I have some work I need to get back to. Maybe next time.”The words tasted bitter as she said them. She hated lying—especially to them. Evelyn and Arthur had always treated her with kindness. They didn’t deserve this. But what could she say? That there wouldn’t be a next time? That their son and his wife were soon be annulled? No. Not today.Evelyn’s disappointment flickered in her eyes, but she gave a small nod. “All right.
