Chapter 3

Author: Mizuki Sei
The next day, Renee showed up at the courthouse at 8:30 am, even though they agreed to meet at nine.

Not only did she arrive early, but she also made sure to put on heavy makeup and her favorite outfit, a rose-red halter dress. With her long hair tied up into a ponytail, the skin on her neck and back glowed under the bright sunlight.

When paired with her elegant, yet cold demeanor, she looked angelic from afar.

Unfortunately, she had caught a cold the night before. Her body was burning up, which made her feel quite weak.

At 9 am sharp, a silver Bugatti Veyron cruised into the parking lot in front of the courthouse. Soon after, she was greeted by Stefan’s ice-cold expression as he exited the vehicle.

His eyes sparkled for a split second when he saw Renee standing there, but this was quickly replaced with a contemptuous expression for some reason.

“Well, aren’t you excited?” Stefan scoffed as he walked past Renee, heading straight towards the department that handled divorce cases.

‘…What’s his deal?!’ Renee thought to herself as she stared up at the tall figure. ‘Aren’t you the one who’s excited? You’re practically running to the counter!’

The procedure went very smoothly. All they had to do was sign a few papers, which took less than ten minutes.

“According to the new law, there is a one-month grace period for all divorces. Should any of you wish to call off the divorce, you can bring along the required documents before the thirty days are up,” explained the staff as he handed them their application forms.

Having worked at the courthouse for years, he had witnessed countless tears and fights during divorce proceedings. This was the first time he had come across such calm individuals at the courthouse.

He simply couldn’t fathom why this couple was divorcing each other. They appeared to be made for each other, especially given their good looks.

Renee immediately took the papers and read through the clauses. She mumbled to herself sarcastically, “There’s a grace period for divorce, but not marriage? If this law applied to marriages as well, I-”

Stefan’s expression darkened. With a cold smirk, he snapped, “Oh? Are you saying you wouldn’t have married me if there was a grace period for marriage?”

“Nope!” Renee lifted an eyebrow. “I got 40 million out of you. 40 million! The average woman wouldn’t even dream of making this much money in their lifetime. I guess you could say I struck gold!”

Stefan was visibly upset by her reaction. He tugged on his tie out of frustration.

The Renee from before was always very lenient as if she didn’t even have her own opinions. The closer they got to the divorce, the more sharp and spiteful her words became.

Just as they were about to part ways, a soft voice came from behind. “Stef, are you done yet?”

Renee turned around, only to realize it was Briar!

Briar was wearing a white sundress, her gaze filled with a tinge of sadness. She looked like a dandelion that would crumple apart at the slightest breeze. There wasn’t a single shred of arrogance left on her face, unlike the other night when they initially met.

Besides that, Renee had also noticed a slight bump on her belly.

“Didn’t I tell you to wait for me in the car? What are you doing out here?”

“It’s cold out here. This child is important to our family, we can’t afford to have you fall ill while pregnant.”

Stefan’s voice sounded cold and distant as usual.

Seeing the two, Renee couldn’t help but feel betrayed. Deep down in her heart, she felt extremely aggrieved.

“Don’t you think you owe me an explanation, Master Hunt?”

Stefan stared back at Renee expressionlessly.

“I don’t owe you anything.”

"Ack! They're competing for my love?" Renee nearly choked because of Stefan's precise conclusion. She became terrified because she could not understand why such amazing tycoons would compete for her love and favor. If she were not careful, she might end up being sacrificed in their fight."No wonder Grandpa flew into a rage when I told him that Grandpa Baldwin was nice. They've been holding grudges against each other, and it doesn't disappear with time." When Renee recalled that incident, she had a lingering fear of escaping a crisis."Yes, he's always emotional when it comes to Austin. But you told him that you liked Austin. You're just driving him crazy. But he just argued with you. As expected, he dotes on you the most," Stefan commented. If it were Stefan, he might suffer miserably if he claimed that he liked any member of the Baldwin family. "Got it. I'll say something he likes if the same thing happens again. And I'll keep my true feelings for the Baldwin family for mys

Stefan guessed that the servant was not telling lies since Renee was teasing that way. It looked like Renee and Timothy had gotten into a fight.Hence, Stefan asked tentatively, "What did you and Grandpa talk about today? Did you have a happy chat?" "Same old, same old." While walking on the path, Renee said light-heartedly, "Adie and Abby asked him about the things that happened at the battlefield. He reminisced about glory and missed my grandpa. Then, he felt sorry for me and scolded you. Blah, blah." It was always the same three things when Timothy and Renee chatted with each other. Hence, it was clear that Timothy yearned for the past and respected the leader of the Golden Trio. At the same time, he was furious at Stefan. "I guessed it." Stefan raised his brows and was not surprised, because those topics were also the same topics he had with Timothy all the time. But there was something different. If Stefan kept a bad attitude at the end, Timothy might beat him up."The

"Of course!" Timothy glared at Stefan and said grumpily, "Not everyone acts like you. All you do is make me mad. Ren isn't that kind of person. We had a happy chat, but you came all of a sudden and ruined the mood.""Okay, I was wrong. I'll leave. Enjoy your chat." Stefan stopped asking about that since Timothy was quite certain. He could only leave sensibly."No, you don't have to leave, given your relationship with Ren." Timothy frowned and ordered Stefan, "Take a walk with Ren. I've recently developed the garden and set up a lot of scenes there. Ren, you can see if there's any design to add.""Mm, Grandpa. That's unnecessary." Renee finally knew how well Timothy could lie. They had clearly gotten into a fight because of Austin just now. But surprisingly, Timothy claimed that they had a nice chat.Besides, Timothy refused to give up and still wanted to bring them together. He grabbed the chance to let them spend some time together. "Why not? This is also your home, as well as

When the servant saw Stefan come home, she happily broke the news to him. "You're home, Master Hunt. What a coincidence. Ms. Everheart is here, too.""Really? Is she here?" Stefan's eyes brightened. He was happy and surprised.Renee spent her days taking care of Margaret lately. Hence, it had been a long time since Stefan had seen her.He had wanted to see her at Caia's house, but it seemed too deliberate. After all, they shared no relationship except for the children. If he went and met her, his efforts to hold himself back before would be futile. Surprisingly, Renee had gone to Hunt Manor. Hence, their meeting would be natural. Stefan didn't have to hold himself back, either. "Where is she now?" Stefan asked eagerly, unable to hide his joy."She's in Master's study," the servant enthusiastically answered, but then she added a reminder. "But they didn't have a nice chat. I heard Master's agitated voice just now. They seemed to have gotten into a fight.""A fight?" Stefan frow

A tense atmosphere gripped them. Renee and Timothy had always been close, like grandfather and granddaughter. Their relationship had been warm and sincere from the moment Renee married Stefan until now.Renee had never offended Timothy. Similarly, Timothy had never said anything harsh wot Renee. But now, they became displeased with each other because of an infamous Austin. Timothy became very disappointed and found it unacceptable."I'm sorry, Grandpa. Maybe you won't believe me. But I'd never blamed any member of your family, including Stefan," Renee calmly expressed herself. "I feel that there's no right or wrong regarding the conflicts between me and your family in the past. We just shared different thoughts, and I had long forgotten them. I hope you won't feel guilty toward me. It'll only stress me out.""Have you really forgotten about them?" For the first time, Timothy felt that she had changed. She had grown mature and sensible. She would not be melancholic for a man o

"You're bewitched by that old man! He's murderous and has killed a lot of people. How could you find him a good person?"Timothy used to dote on Renee and take pride in her. Unexpectedly, a wicked demon had easily bribed her.On the one hand, he was angry at Austin for being that cunning. On the other hand, he was angry at Renee for being dumb and failed to differentiate between good and bad. "Calm down, Grandpa. These are trivial things. It's my opinion whether I find someone good or bad. It isn't important." Renee did not anticipate Timothy caring so much about that. She regretted being that honest. "No, it's important. I've always seen you as my granddaughter-in-law. Plus, you're the mother of my great-grandkids. Your opinions will now shape their characters. I must pay attention to that."Timothy had always been an amiable and tolerant person, but he became solemn and particular when it came to the Austin family. He was different from his usual self. Renee spread her han
