Chapter 3

Author: Mizuki Sei
The next day, Renee showed up at the courthouse at 8:30 am, even though they agreed to meet at nine.

Not only did she arrive early, but she also made sure to put on heavy makeup and her favorite outfit, a rose-red halter dress. With her long hair tied up into a ponytail, the skin on her neck and back glowed under the bright sunlight.

When paired with her elegant, yet cold demeanor, she looked angelic from afar.

Unfortunately, she had caught a cold the night before. Her body was burning up, which made her feel quite weak.

At 9 am sharp, a silver Bugatti Veyron cruised into the parking lot in front of the courthouse. Soon after, she was greeted by Stefan’s ice-cold expression as he exited the vehicle.

His eyes sparkled for a split second when he saw Renee standing there, but this was quickly replaced with a contemptuous expression for some reason.

“Well, aren’t you excited?” Stefan scoffed as he walked past Renee, heading straight towards the department that handled divorce cases.

‘…What’s his deal?!’ Renee thought to herself as she stared up at the tall figure. ‘Aren’t you the one who’s excited? You’re practically running to the counter!’

The procedure went very smoothly. All they had to do was sign a few papers, which took less than ten minutes.

“According to the new law, there is a one-month grace period for all divorces. Should any of you wish to call off the divorce, you can bring along the required documents before the thirty days are up,” explained the staff as he handed them their application forms.

Having worked at the courthouse for years, he had witnessed countless tears and fights during divorce proceedings. This was the first time he had come across such calm individuals at the courthouse.

He simply couldn’t fathom why this couple was divorcing each other. They appeared to be made for each other, especially given their good looks.

Renee immediately took the papers and read through the clauses. She mumbled to herself sarcastically, “There’s a grace period for divorce, but not marriage? If this law applied to marriages as well, I-”

Stefan’s expression darkened. With a cold smirk, he snapped, “Oh? Are you saying you wouldn’t have married me if there was a grace period for marriage?”

“Nope!” Renee lifted an eyebrow. “I got 40 million out of you. 40 million! The average woman wouldn’t even dream of making this much money in their lifetime. I guess you could say I struck gold!”

Stefan was visibly upset by her reaction. He tugged on his tie out of frustration.

The Renee from before was always very lenient as if she didn’t even have her own opinions. The closer they got to the divorce, the more sharp and spiteful her words became.

Just as they were about to part ways, a soft voice came from behind. “Stef, are you done yet?”

Renee turned around, only to realize it was Briar!

Briar was wearing a white sundress, her gaze filled with a tinge of sadness. She looked like a dandelion that would crumple apart at the slightest breeze. There wasn’t a single shred of arrogance left on her face, unlike the other night when they initially met.

Besides that, Renee had also noticed a slight bump on her belly.

“Didn’t I tell you to wait for me in the car? What are you doing out here?”

“It’s cold out here. This child is important to our family, we can’t afford to have you fall ill while pregnant.”

Stefan’s voice sounded cold and distant as usual.

Seeing the two, Renee couldn’t help but feel betrayed. Deep down in her heart, she felt extremely aggrieved.

“Don’t you think you owe me an explanation, Master Hunt?”

Stefan stared back at Renee expressionlessly.

“I don’t owe you anything.”

Renee, Jovan, and Leia were deep in conversation when Xavier suddenly stood up and clapped his hands."Everyone, just sitting around like this is way too boring. How about we play a little game to liven things up?""What's he up to now?" Renee frowned at Xavier. She turned to look at Leia and tried to extract some insider information from her."I have no idea." Leia shrugged and mouthed to Renee that she was just as confused."A game doesn't have to involve everyone. Renee, Leia, and I are having plenty of fun on our own," Jovan said.He leaned back on his hands and looked up at the stars. With one leg stretched out in front of him, he had the demeanor of someone who obviously wasn't interested.Xavier's expression darkened slightly, but for the sake of the bigger picture, he didn't throw a fit. Instead, he forced a smile and said in a mockingly sweet tone, "If we're playing as a group, we should have some team spirit. If you don't want to play, kid, feel free to sit it out."

By the time they made it back to camp, the fire was already blazing.Stefan had ordered his men to hurry and bring back plenty of food. Among the supplies were a whole roasted lamb and baskets of freshly picked fruit. The lamb turned slowly over the flames. Its fat sizzled and dripped. The rich aroma drifted so far it felt like it carried for miles. From a distance, the scene looked almost like a lively tribal gathering. Everyone was seated on the ground, laughing and celebrating around the fire."You're back! Come sit!"The moment Jovan spotted Renee, he stepped in before Stefan could react and guided her to sit beside him.Renee didn't think much of it and simply took the seat next to Jovan. Before the flickering flames, dressed in matching-toned outdoor gear and chatting easily, the two of them looked strikingly well-matched.Stefan sat directly across from Renee. Every now and then, his gaze drifted to the pair before he lowered his head again and poked at the firewood with

Xavier watched as Leia, who was usually fearless, turned into a timid version of herself. He couldn't help but smile. He spread his arms, about to pull her into an embrace, when she abruptly snapped back to her senses. She immediately shoved him away."Get lost. You're just messing with me. I already checked the records. There was never any murder case at this lake!" Leia exclaimed.Xavier staggered and nearly lost his balance. He was just short of falling into the water. His expression remained nonchalant."Public records aren't always reliable. Most things never get published for the masses. Come on. Sit closer to me. If something drags you into the lake, at least I can pull you out."He reached out and looked expectantly at her. Although it looked like a simple gesture, it was actually a test.If Leia took his hand, it meant she still had feelings for him, and they might still get back together. If she refused, then perhaps this was truly the end.Xavier was filled with ant

Leia couldn't help but laugh at Xavier's over-the-top act. She looked him up and down as if examining some strange alien species. "Xavier, how did I never realize you believed in such things? Are you seriously that much of a coward?""That's rude. Since when does having faith mean being a coward? I simply believe in God and such. Besides, I was only worried about you!"There was no way he was letting Leia think he was some coward scared of ghosts. To resolve this misunderstanding, he decided to drag Leia down with him so that she'd believe in God and fear ghosts, too."You're so calm because you don't know what happened at this lake."He clicked his tongue and shook his head dramatically while putting on a mysterious expression.Leia frowned. Her curiosity was instantly piqued. "W-What happened?""This story took place three months ago."Xavier gazed out over the lake. Under the darkening night sky, his handsome face looked unusually serious. He looked nothing like his usual ca

Meanwhile, Xavier went off on his own to look for Leia.Looking for Leia was an excuse. In truth, he was nervous. After everything they had been through, including the breakups, the reconciliations, and the cruel words they had hurled at each other, the idea of pretending none of it had happened and simply getting back together was unbearable.Forget Leia. Even he found it ridiculous.Still, the sky was growing darker. The place was practically an undeveloped wilderness. Leia was a young woman wandering around alone. It wasn't safe. No matter how awkward things were, he had to find her first.Leia hadn't gone very far. She chose a shallow dip by the lake. A flat stone sat there as if waiting for her, and she settled onto it. She stared at the water for a long time. The lake at dusk was breathtaking.A streak of fading sunlight lingered above it, and with the sudden shift in temperature, a thin mist blanketed the surface, making the whole scene look like something out of a fantas

While listening to Stefan talk, Renee only felt a sense of dissonance. She stayed silent for a long time before finally saying flatly, "It's all ancient history. You don't need to keep bringing it up. You never actually understood me because you never truly wanted to understand me.""That's not true."Stefan felt misunderstood and quickly tried to explain, but Renee had already stood up. She had no interest in continuing any unnecessary interaction with him."Jovan's still busy over there. I'll go help him. You can go have fun wherever you like."With that, she turned around and left without looking back.Something piqued Stefan's curiosity. He quickened his pace and stopped in front of her, effectively blocking her path. His expression was stern."Are you serious about working with Jovan?" he asked, sounding somewhat stubborn. "Whether I'm serious about it or not doesn't really have anything to do with you, does it? This is my own decision to make."Renee looked at the man
