Chapter 3

Author: Mizuki Sei
The next day, Renee showed up at the courthouse at 8:30 am, even though they agreed to meet at nine.

Not only did she arrive early, but she also made sure to put on heavy makeup and her favorite outfit, a rose-red halter dress. With her long hair tied up into a ponytail, the skin on her neck and back glowed under the bright sunlight.

When paired with her elegant, yet cold demeanor, she looked angelic from afar.

Unfortunately, she had caught a cold the night before. Her body was burning up, which made her feel quite weak.

At 9 am sharp, a silver Bugatti Veyron cruised into the parking lot in front of the courthouse. Soon after, she was greeted by Stefan’s ice-cold expression as he exited the vehicle.

His eyes sparkled for a split second when he saw Renee standing there, but this was quickly replaced with a contemptuous expression for some reason.

“Well, aren’t you excited?” Stefan scoffed as he walked past Renee, heading straight towards the department that handled divorce cases.

‘…What’s his deal?!’ Renee thought to herself as she stared up at the tall figure. ‘Aren’t you the one who’s excited? You’re practically running to the counter!’

The procedure went very smoothly. All they had to do was sign a few papers, which took less than ten minutes.

“According to the new law, there is a one-month grace period for all divorces. Should any of you wish to call off the divorce, you can bring along the required documents before the thirty days are up,” explained the staff as he handed them their application forms.

Having worked at the courthouse for years, he had witnessed countless tears and fights during divorce proceedings. This was the first time he had come across such calm individuals at the courthouse.

He simply couldn’t fathom why this couple was divorcing each other. They appeared to be made for each other, especially given their good looks.

Renee immediately took the papers and read through the clauses. She mumbled to herself sarcastically, “There’s a grace period for divorce, but not marriage? If this law applied to marriages as well, I-”

Stefan’s expression darkened. With a cold smirk, he snapped, “Oh? Are you saying you wouldn’t have married me if there was a grace period for marriage?”

“Nope!” Renee lifted an eyebrow. “I got 40 million out of you. 40 million! The average woman wouldn’t even dream of making this much money in their lifetime. I guess you could say I struck gold!”

Stefan was visibly upset by her reaction. He tugged on his tie out of frustration.

The Renee from before was always very lenient as if she didn’t even have her own opinions. The closer they got to the divorce, the more sharp and spiteful her words became.

Just as they were about to part ways, a soft voice came from behind. “Stef, are you done yet?”

Renee turned around, only to realize it was Briar!

Briar was wearing a white sundress, her gaze filled with a tinge of sadness. She looked like a dandelion that would crumple apart at the slightest breeze. There wasn’t a single shred of arrogance left on her face, unlike the other night when they initially met.

Besides that, Renee had also noticed a slight bump on her belly.

“Didn’t I tell you to wait for me in the car? What are you doing out here?”

“It’s cold out here. This child is important to our family, we can’t afford to have you fall ill while pregnant.”

Stefan’s voice sounded cold and distant as usual.

Seeing the two, Renee couldn’t help but feel betrayed. Deep down in her heart, she felt extremely aggrieved.

“Don’t you think you owe me an explanation, Master Hunt?”

Stefan stared back at Renee expressionlessly.

“I don’t owe you anything.”

While listening to Stefan talk, Renee only felt a sense of dissonance. She stayed silent for a long time before finally saying flatly, "It's all ancient history. You don't need to keep bringing it up. You never actually understood me because you never truly wanted to understand me.""That's not true."Stefan felt misunderstood and quickly tried to explain, but Renee had already stood up. She had no interest in continuing any unnecessary interaction with him."Jovan's still busy over there. I'll go help him. You can go have fun wherever you like."With that, she turned around and left without looking back.Something piqued Stefan's curiosity. He quickened his pace and stopped in front of her, effectively blocking her path. His expression was stern."Are you serious about working with Jovan?" he asked, sounding somewhat stubborn. "Whether I'm serious about it or not doesn't really have anything to do with you, does it? This is my own decision to make."Renee looked at the man

"Go have fun. You can leave this to me," Stefan said confidently. He was trying to show off his superior hands-on skills as an engineering graduate.Renee couldn't help but roll her eyes. She didn't stop what she was doing and snapped back irritably, "If you really knew how, we wouldn't still be messing around with it now, with nothing even taking shape. You sit over there and relax. I'll build it."Stefan lifted his hands. He wanted to help but had no idea where to start. In the end, he did exactly what Renee said and stood to the side. He'd become nothing more than her tool runner. After watching her work, he was genuinely amazed by Renee's survival skills. The woman he once thought was fragile and needed his protection had long become capable of standing on her own two feet. In fact, she was even stronger than he had ever imagined. This was something he had always been far too quick to overlook.Renee had never been a fragile woman. She also wasn't someone who could be conten

After getting Renee's nod of approval, Stefan and Xavier were finally able to stay. When Xavier saw Jovan setting up camp, he wandered over as well. He planned to ask for pointers so he and Stefan could at least sleep comfortably tonight.Jovan couldn't be bothered with him. He tossed Xavier a few tools and told him to figure it out himself.Jovan originally wanted a romantic conversation with Renee under the stars. Having Stefan as a third wheel already annoyed him enough. Now, Xavier came along too. That just made it worse. All he wanted was for both of them to disappear from his sight as soon as possible.Xavier held the tools Jovan threw at him and looked utterly lost. His face was blank with confusion. He had no idea where to start. After all, he never did things like this himself. He always had other people handle it."How do you secure these metal stakes so the tent stays standing firmly?"Xavier hammered for a long time, but still felt the tent was unstable. He pulled th

Since it was already getting late, and Jovan had come fully prepared, he decided to camp overnight and warmly invited Renee to join him."Renee, I remember you really like stargazing. The air quality around this lake is great, and there are hardly any clouds. Once night falls, you can see a sky full of stars. Many stars that usually require high-powered telescopes are visible to the naked eye here. Tomorrow's the weekend anyway. If you don't have plans, why don't you camp with me tonight?"Jovan spoke with genuine enthusiasm. The two of them had lived together briefly before, and he had long since memorized Renee's habits and preferences. He knew she loved stargazing and collected all kinds of telescopes. He had even planned, deep down, that one day he would bring her to see a truly breathtaking night sky.But he also knew how resistant Renee was toward him. Afraid she would reject him, that plan had never materialized.Today, he finally found the opportunity, and he didn't want

Stefan's gaze turned cold. After a brief silence, he looked at Steve and said nonchalantly, "Mr. Warren, I didn't realize that people at your age still have the energy to meddle in the love lives of the younger generation.""Well…"Steve was momentarily at a loss for words. He quickly laughed it off. "I was just asking casually. You're right. At my age, being this nosy really isn't appropriate. I'll watch myself."He was a seasoned veteran of the business world. He had dealt with all kinds of people and rarely felt intimidated. Yet whenever he faced Stefan, he instinctively kept himself in check.Stefan's words were calm and even polite, but his intense gaze made Steve deeply uncomfortable. In the end, Steve suppressed his urge to probe further and focused on fishing.Besides, regardless of what kind of relationship Jovan and Renee had, it was obvious that Stefan was fiercely protective of her. Steve knew better than to push his luck. And so, the afternoon passed peacefully.R

Words like that could melt even the coldest heart.Steve, meanwhile, lit up with pure gossip-fueled delight and teased shamelessly, "Well now, who would’ve thought? The young Jovan, who's rumored to be a notorious playboy, turns out to be a hopeless romantic. Come on, spill the beans. Who exactly is this angel you’re so devoted to?"The question instantly made the atmosphere awkward.Everyone present, except Steve himself, knew perfectly well who Jovan’s so-called angel was.In fact, Steve had probably heard some rumors, too. It was just that, according to his worldview, they were a little too outrageous to believe outright. That was why he threw out the question to test whether his suspicions were true. However, the question was left hanging.Even Xavier, who was usually loose-lipped, had effectively sealed his mouth shut and didn’t dare comment. An eerie silence fell over the lakeside.Renee, Stefan, and Jovan sat in a neat row as if they had rehearsed it. Their movements wer
