May’s POV
As I rushed through the sleek, polished corridors of the building, my mind raced with guilt, hoping I was able to achieve what I was here for. Asher’s business deal falling through while I was occupied in that job interview left a sour taste in my mouth.
It was my fault; I should have been there to support him like I had always done. So, I took it upon myself to rectify the situation.
As I sat in the reception area waiting to see the head of the company, all I could do was think about what I was going to say.
“Ms. Campbell! You can go in now.” The secretary’s voice interrupted my thoughts. It’s Mrs. Campbell, I wanted to say, but I kept the corrections to myself.
Nodding, I stood up and said. “Thank you!”
Walking briskly to the door of the office, I stood before the imposing door, my heart pounding with nerves and resolve. Taking a deep breath, I knocked, and waited to hear the response to come in, hoping for a chance to explain and salvage Asher’s deal.
I was glad the man was even seeing me without a prior appointment. I had only barely found out what company it was Asher had been trying to get a deal from, and his secretary had been reluctant to tell me, but thank goodness I got it out of her. It was why I wanted to take it as a sign that I would be able to do what I came here to do.
A man was seated behind the desk, as I walked in. He had a small frown marred his face as he stared at the paper in front of him. He raised his head when he heard me come in.
When he looked up at me, I was surprised at how young and handsome the man was. I could see he was tall even though he was sitting down, almost as tall as Asher. He had very similar intense gray eyes Asher had, but where Asher exuded raw masculinity with his tall, broad-shouldered frame that suggested strength and power, with chiseled features that adorned his square-jawed face, this man possessed a boyish charm that effortlessly drew people in.
His disarming eyes shimmer with warmth, framed by long lashes that seemed almost out of place on a man. He must be older than Asher, but he wasn’t the old man she thought she was meeting.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Keith.” I greeted as I walked to him, and he pointed to one of the chairs in front of his desk.
Taking that as an invitation to sit down, I did just that.
“Hello, Ms. Campbell. Please, call me Gary. What brings you here today?” The man said as he dropped the pen in his hand to focus on me.
“It’s regarding a deal that Asher Campbell, the CEO of Campbell Imports, was pursuing with your company. Regrettably, I’ve learned that we encountered some challenges regarding the perception of our company’s image, particularly in relation to the values your company holds regarding family.”
Gary squinted his eyes as if searching his brain, then he nodded. “Ah, Asher, yes. He left quite a good impression, but what you pointed out wasn’t the only reason regarding the deal falling through. It’s a shame things didn’t progress as planned.”
Tell that to my dear husband. “Well, I’m hoping for another opportunity to present our proposal and address any concerns your team might have.” I said, hoping he might give that a thought.
Gary smiled, and then he pushed back in his chair. “I appreciate you doing this, Ms. Campbell. However, I’m afraid the decision-making process is quite complex on our end. I’ll take your proposal into consideration, but I can’t promise anything at this point. I hope you know that, but I’ll let you know if there’s anything.” He said.
After thanking him, I walked out of his office and out of the building, hailing a taxi to take me to Asher’s office. I was going to tell him what Mr. Keith had told me and hopefully, it would pan out in a good way.
As I stopped in front of Asher’s building, I got out, and paid the taxi, running up the steps to the entrance. By the time I got to his office, I was panting a little bit.
I walked to the secretary’s table and with a small smile, I asked her if Asher was in.
“Oh yes! He just got back from a meeting a while ago.” She told me.
“Thank you.” I said, and then I walked to his office, knocking a couple of times before pushing the door open.
Asher was standing by the window when I walked in, his back to me. He turned to look over his shoulder at me, surprise in his eyes as he saw me.
He walked away from the window to walk to me, he strode with a confident gait, exuding raw masculinity, and I just couldn’t help but drool mentally. He had a five o’clock shadow on his face, but it made him look even hotter.
“Stop drooling, May!” I told myself so that I could focus on why I was here.
Before he could catch me staring like some hungry woman looking at food, and asked me what I was doing in his office, I spoke. “Hi. I came to talk to you about something!”
He said nothing, just looking at me with those eyes that was my undoing from the moment we met.
“I… I had a meeting with Mr. Keith today,” I began, my voice hesitant. “It was about the deal, the one you had wanted from his company.”
Asher’s eyes flickered with a trace of curiosity, but his demeanor remained stern, still saying nothing.
“I went there to try to get back the deal,” I continued when he said nothing still, my voice tinged with remorse. “I felt guilty, Asher. I know it was my fault I couldn’t accompany you, and you had to take someone else. I wanted to make things right.”
At those words, Asher’s expression hardened. His jaw clenched visibly, his eyes flashing with a sudden surge of anger, or at least, that was what I thought I saw.
“May, what were you thinking?” Asher’s voice was low, edged with fury. “Going to beg Gary Keith to salvage a deal I lost? Do you realize what you’ve done? You’ve humiliated me!”
Frowning, I recoiled slightly, startled by his reaction. “I didn’t mean to embarrass you, Asher. I just wanted to fix my mistake and help you.”
“Help me?” Asher scoffed, raking his hand through his hair as he paced the room. “This wasn’t about helping me, May. It was about you overstepping your boundaries, making decisions without asking. I never told you to do that, did I?”
At his words, my heart sank as I realized his anger. I had only hoped to mend the rift caused by the lost deal, but instead, I had worsened matters.
“I’m sorry, Asher,” I murmured, my voice laced with regret. For a moment, I hated that I had gone to see that man, but then, I’ve been doing everything wrong for a while now, to Asher.
Asher turned to look at me, his expression telling me I had done the worst. “You’re just so…” he trailed off, probably deciding against what it was he wanted to say, then he said. “Just go home, May. Do us both a favor and leave before I say something you’re going to hate me for.”
Ashamed, even though all I had tried to do was help, I left his office, feeling a sense of deja vu at the way I was leaving this building again this time.
May’s POVI should be happy, but I’m not. It was as if I had no reason to, even though I got a job and I was starting today. What was I to be happy about, after everything that had happened in the short period since Asher and I's second year anniversary. Things had been downhill since, but the shocker was the way my stepfather’s company went broke just after losing that business deal, one I was convinced was Asher’s doing. I just couldn’t believe he would do such a thing just to get back at me, and I felt so sad and betrayed. After I had gone to that man to try getting him back the business deal he lost because of me, he had been so angry he had left the house, and then, he had stopped picking my calls. As if those weren’t enough to break my heart, I had seen him with another woman and when I asked him who she was, he had told me it wasn’t my business. If anyone told me all these would happen in the space of those short periods, I would be amazed. Shaking my head to get the thought
May’s POVThe rain beat me home, washing away the heaviness in my heart, but not completely. I was still feeling a little bit down from all the happenings at home with Asher, but I also couldn’t stop thinking about what Mr. Keith said. But I didn’t let that bother me much. Honest to God, I shouldn’t even think about it because for all I knew, he might just be joking.Sighing, I grabbed the keys from my bags and unlocked the front door. Today, the house was empty, so it was easy to slip in at this time without having to explain why I had arrived back home all drenched. The warm silence that greeted me, told me that Asher wasn’t home, not that he was ever home at the time of the day. Even if he was home, which was rare, I knew that he was going to be bush in his office.Anyway, I was grateful for the silence, because it would help me get things I was looking to do all done in no time.“If I could just get it all done in a couple of second or with the snap of my finger.” I whispered to m
May’s POVI had turned all night long after the exchange with Asher in the kitchen, coupled with being drenched from the rain, I had felt so sick I didn’t think I would be able to get out of bed this morning.I had eaten dinner alone because Asher had left the house after that and I had not heard anything from him since then. That was his way though, going out without informing me, acting like I didn’t matter and I wasn’t someone he could call to let know where he was or how his day was going. And all I ever did to deserve this was to be married to him, and tried as much as I could to show him that I cared. To him, every thing he saw was fake because he had tagged me a gold digger. Whatever got I was digging though, I hadn’t turned a millionaire from it, because if that was truly who I was, I sure would have taken the money he offered me just to sign the divorce papers. As I thought about that again, my heart tightened and I felt the corner of my eyes wet with tears that leaked from t
Asher’s POVA soft knock sounded against my door as I pushed up from the ground and I groaned with a soft curse escaping from between my lips. Looking at the door, I wondered who it was and why they were disturbing me this early.I knew it couldn’t be May, she knew not to disturb me this early, besides, my room was off-limits to her. Perhaps, it was the butler, Matias. O wonder what he wanted with me this early. Groaning, I walked to the door and unlocked it. I was right.“Hello Sir, good morning.” he said and I frowned down at the stout man that was in front of me.“I do hope it’s a good morning, but I’ll be able to tell from why you’re here this early.” I said to him and he bowed a little.“I’m so sorry for that, Mr. Campbell. I didn’t mean to disturb you especially when I know you must be busy with your morning exercise.” He said, and I started to shake my head. That was the thing with Matias. He never went straight to the point, always beating around the bush. The only reason I wa
Asher’s POVThe moment I walked into May’s room, I could feel the noticeable tension that was in the air. My mother was sitting on the edge of the bed, with May sitting beside her, a look of uneasiness on her face. I wasn’t sure how to tackle this, but I knew I had to do something to maintain appearances so I walked over and gently hugged my mother from the side, a small smile on my face.I don’t usually smile, because that would make people think you’re more accessible, which I wasn’t inclined to show. I was Asher Campbell, but for my mother, I would smile, even if it was a little.“Look who finally decide to come look for his mother.” She said and I smiled.“Mom, you didn’t inform me of your visit, there was no way I would have been able to tell you were here if Matias didn’t inform me,” I said with an affectionate smile as I planted a quick kiss on May’s cheek, playing my part in the facade.Mom didn’t know that our marriage was a contract one, one I was trying to get out of as soo
May’s POVI would love to know what Emily was trying to say as she sat in front of me at the coffee shop. “I still don’t understand what you’re trying to say, ‘Em. What’s this about?” I asked her.She had called me very early this morning about wanting to meet up and I had rushed out of the house to meet up with her, and now, I wished I hadn’t. I didn’t like what she was saying one bit.“What exactly don’t you understand, May?” she asked me, eyeing me carefully and I rolled my eyes.“Just about everything you just said.” I said. She stared at me for a moment and then she shook her head. “I know this may seem like nonsense, May, but think about what I’m saying. If you sign those papers like your husband wants, you get to leave and live your life, then he gets to realize your worth. The more you hold onto him, the more he tag you as some silly gold digger.” She said.I glared at Emily, it was all I could do actually not to chuck something at her head. I was feeling a surge of frustratio
May’s POVJerking out of his arms, I looked at Asher, giving him a look that said he shouldn’t think this was something it wasn’t. Asher looked at my face again, with an accusation in his eyes even though he didn't say anything, and all I could think of was what would be running through his mind presently.Holy shit, this doesn’t look good at all, there was no way I could explain this without it looking all sketchy.I felt his eyes on me, and for a moment, I wished he would just say something, anything, to break the awkward silence that enveloped us. I would also like for him but to look at me the way he was currently looking at me, like I had done something so grave. His gaze held an accusation that cut through me, though he uttered not a single word. What did he think he saw? That I was with Mr. Keith? All he saw was a hand wrapped around my waist, so couldn’t he just know that that could be because I wanted to fall and he had helped me up?Although, thinking about it now and saying
May’s POV“Be seated!”That was the first thing Asher said to me when I went down for dinner that night. He had asked the housekeeper to cook and asked her to also get me when she was done. There was no doubt about the fact that it was an order, a reminder of some kind that he was the head of this house, the powerful man people knew him to be, and the man who could still talk to me as he liked.I couldn’t say anything to him though. Aside from the fact that I respected him too much to do the opposite of what he said, I had been trying to be extra nicer than usual, just to pacify him because I knew he was still angry about the coffee shop incident.“Get us some warm water, Dee,” he said to the housekeeper, but my mind drifted back to the coffee shop, and the way Asher had acted when Gary had called me a beautiful woman. He had looked at me for what seemed like a long time, his eyes trailing over my body as if he was stripping me off my clothes and then he had nodded his head and said.
