VALERIA

I looked at my phone sadly as I saw the debit alert for the third time this month. I plopped my head on the desk and groaned silently. Vanessa's cancer drugs were milking my bank account dry but what could I do? She had just me, there was no one else, but I felt I wasn't doing enough, I wasn't buying as many drugs as she needed which the doctors have warned me about but what else could I do? I could only get what I could within my means. I didn't know what to do; borrowing money was not even in my mind because how would I be able to pay it back?

I let out a breath in frustration and opened my word puzzle book. Searching for words in any puzzle book always helps me. It is weird, yes, but whenever I was frustrated, angry, sad, or something related to any of these mentioned, solving puzzles did it for me.

I searched for the word 'Discombobulated' in the letters arranged randomly. I squinted my eyes, hoping that it would expose the word quickly but that wasn't working. I put the pencil in my mouth, staring hard at the book. It was getting so difficult so, I skipped to the next word, 'Onomasiological'

"Is this word even real?" I asked out loud.

"Yes, yes it is." A voice replied.

I jolted before looking up, my face relaxed.

"Nice one, Nicole," I said as her laughter filled the air.

"I scared you didn't I?" She leaned her elbows on the desk, looking at me.

"How long have you been standing there?" I asked, dropping the puzzle book in the open drawer.

"Since you opened the puzzle book; you open it whenever you're sad. What's up?"

"It's Vanessa." I sighed.

Her eyes opened wide, I could sense her fear. "Is…is she okay?"

"Relax, nothing is wrong with her, the drugs just keep getting more expensive. I'm scared that I wouldn't be able to keep up, I'm scared that…"

"Shh," Nicole commanded, staring at me hard. "Nothing is going to happen to Nessa, you are doing your best, believe me. I'm here for you."

"What if it isn't enough?" I asked. "Doc. Charles said she needs more drugs; I'm worried Nikki."

"How about the drugs she is taking now?"

"Well, they're doing their work but she needs more drugs which I can't afford right now." I sighed again this time, fighting back tears.

"Hey," She called, reaching out for my hand. "She is going to be fine, I promise you." She reassured with a smile.

"I can't wait for Mr. Adam to return from this long business trip. It has been 5 years; our pay grade needs to be increased." I said.

"Honestly, it has been so long. He is coming this week, right? I can't wait to see my boss for the first time."

"Trust me, he isn't as good as you think." She rolled her eyes. I laughed.

Nicole has been here longer than I have which means she had seen Mr. Adam before. It was obvious she didn't like him. When I asked what he was like, all she told me was, "He is a handsome man that was born with a silver spoon. He is an only child and he is helping to manage this hotel which is owned by his mother for the time being. He is also a spoilt brat."

She didn't tell me anything more than that, and I didn't ask. She disliked him so much and I didn't know why.

I mentally prepared myself to see him for 5 years, I wanted to be of good behavior, in case of anything. First impressions matter, right?

I worked as a receptionist for Lush Hotel, one of the biggest hotels in the country, for 5 years. I wished I could get another job, a better one in fact, but I couldn't see any. My bachelor's degree in accounting was just wasting but you've got to do what you've got to do, right?

Without this job, I wouldn't have been able to pay for any of Vanessa's drugs, heck, she would have died by now. The decent salary I was making here saved me a lot but it just wasn't enough, it just wasn't.

I met Nicole here, she was also a receptionist. I could never forget how she smiled and hugged me the first day we met, her chubby cheeks turning red. She was so excited to work with me and we just clicked. She had the night shift so she didn't have any work till evening.

"Where is Larry?" She asked, looking at the empty seat beside me.

I shrugged, "I don't know, he is probably shagging one of the housekeepers."

"V!" She laughed. "Don't be vulgar." She said, tucking her auburn hair behind her ear.

"We both know he is a womanizer."

"I don't even know what to say to you."

I scoffed, "You should head home, you know you need rest."

"Right, right. I'm leaving now. Take care of yourself." She said walking backward and waving, I waved back and picked up my phone.

"Call me if you need anything!" She shouted.

"Sure." I smiled, not looking up. I opened my bank account, staring at the money I had left. I was so so broke. How was I going to survive this week? What was I going to do?

I sighed again as I heard the entrance door slide open.

"Oh my God, I'm so sorry, I'm really sorry."

I heard. That was Nicole's voice; she sounded so scared.

Who was she apologizing to?

I looked up and met a tall guy, he was quite far, and I could only see his side view. He was looking at Nicole. The general manager, Mr. Ben, was standing beside him.

Who is that? I thought to myself.

"Are you truly sorry?" The voice asked. His deep voice filled the entire room; it sent shivers down my spine even. He sounded so good.

"Yes, I am. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to step on you." Nicole's voice was shaking. I had never seen her that way.

"You also spilled my coffee on my suit too."

"I'm sorry about that too." She looked so small in front of him. That was when I noticed how tall he was. I could easily guess that he was 6 feet 5.

Wow.

He leaned forward, to her eye level "Would sorry clean my shoes and suit though? Would it?"

She shook her head slowly.

"Would you be able to afford them even?" He asked.

I scrunched my eyebrows. What did that mean? And why was he being so rude? She already apologized.

"I…I'm sorry." Nicole reiterated. She looked terrified. I didn't understand why she couldn't talk back to him. He was clearly downgrading her.

He stood upright, "If you are, clean my shoe." He commanded.

Mr. Ben and Nicole exchanged looks.

"What are you waiting for? Hm?" He asked.

"Let me help you, Sir." Mr. Ben said, about bending to do it.

"No." His voice was coarse. "She caused this, so she is going to do it."

I couldn't watch this eyesore anymore.

"Do you derive joy in doing things like these?" I spoke up; my tone was hard. Nicole and Mr. Ben looked at me with shock, I didn't understand why, and I certainly didn't care.

He turned to face me. As soon as I saw his face, I froze. The face looked familiar. His face looked perfect, the high cheekbones, the full two-toned lips, and the beautiful eyes. He was beautiful; the dark-chocolate kind. I didn't want to stare.

He looked at me with a smirk, "Are you talking to me?" He gestured by pointing his finger to himself.

"Yes," I said, comporting myself. "You don't talk to people that way, that is wrong."

He scoffed and looked at Mr. Ben, "Who is this?"

He was about to reply but I cut him short, "I'm standing in front of you, and I'm not deaf."

"Stop talking!" Mr. Ben warned.

"Why? He was being rude, and we don't condone things like that."

"He..he is an exception." Nicole stammered.

I tilted my head towards her, "And why is that?" I asked. She looked at me, silent.

I looked at Mr. Ben, he was silent too.

"Well, someone should say something. Tell me why he is an exception." I said.

He laughed dryly and walked forward, leaning his hands on the desk. I couldn't help but glance at his neat and long fingers.

"I am Adam Lawrence."

My eyes widened on hearing that. I opened my mouth slightly.

"Ring a bell?" He asked, sneering at me.

I'll be damned.

ADAM"Welcome back, son." My mother sang on the call. I laughed."Thank you, Mum," I said, forcing a smile. I leaned on the back seat as the driver brought the car to life. I didn't miss anything here, but I had to return — for the hotel, and her. Now I had arrived, I was latently regretting it."Of course I am, I can't wait to see you, mum." VALERIAI was pacing, I couldn't stop. I was still in shock. I couldn't believe what happened. What a way to make a first impression, V.I screamed for the umpteenth time."It wasn't so bad," Nicole repeated for the 7th time. She was leaning on the toilet door to avoid anyone from coming in. "It was! It was!" I shouted. "I almost lost my job. If not for Mr. Ben, I would have lost my job. How would I have paid for Nessa's treatments?" I started breathing heavily, my heart was pounding in my chest. I leaned on the sink and looked at myself in the mirror. This was really messed up. Nicole walked towards me and rubbed my shoulders which really seemed to help in that situation. "Relax, babe. You didn't lose your job; you are fine." "Yeah, for now. What if he fires me tomorrow?" She laughed, "He isn't going to do that. Mr. Ben explained, remember? You said that yourself.""Still," I whined. "I'm so scared."She turned me to face her, "Don't be, you're fine," She paused. VALERIAThe road back to the hotel was a long one. I was seated at the back seat of a luxurious bus, which was sort of hidden so crying more was very much easy. 50,000 dollars to 70,000 dollars? Where was I going to get that kind of money? Hell, I didn't even have up to 2,000 dollars in my name. If I decide to save right now, Nessa would be long gone. What am I going to do? Get a new job? Where? How? How can I juggle a 9 to 5 with other jobs? Are there online jobs now? What can I do?What can I possibly do to obtain quick cash?I bit my bottom lip so hard to push back a new round of tears; I bit it so hard that I could taste blood. What the hell was I going to do??I stood in front of the building and thought to myself about how life decided to make me feel extra shitty today when I saw a car drive past me slowly. ADAM"So, how was the meeting with Madeline?" Michael asked as he handed me a glass; we were seated by poolside. As soon as I left my mother's, I went to Michael's place. Okay, not his place, his father's. Michael's father owned a billion dollar company and he had done a hell of a job keeping the company in vogue. I admired his dad a lot; he was wealthy, accommodating, nice, and most of all, faithful, unlike you know who. One thing I've noticed about being rich, most of the people you are close to, are also rich. It's automated. I didn't understand why it was that way.“Oh you know, the usual." I responded after taking a sip."Mothers." He chuckled. "I'm not prepared for that conversation right now, so let's hope your mum doesn't put that in my mum's head.""Yeah, we can only hope." "She feels I haven't been in a serious relationship because of what my dad did to her.""Is that the case?" He asked. I shrugged, "I have no idea, honestly." ADAM“You’re done for the day; I’m going to spend the night in one of the hotel rooms.” I stated this to the driver while getting down. “Okay, boss, have a nice night.” He said as he drove away.“Yeah, you too.” I muttered as I made my way into the hotel. I checked the time: 10 p.m., I had a few things to cover up, and I was extremely exhausted. I needed something to keep me awake. Food. I hadn’t had a meal since I arrived due to obvious reasons, so I decided to stop at the kitchen first. I mean, I haven’t even had the time to meet my employees. As I walked into the building, the thought of that lady ran through my head. Why was I thinking of her? I had no freaking idea. As amusing as it was, I found myself in front of the front desk, stylishly looking for her. I only saw one person, a man, and felt this slight wave of disappointment. As soon as he saw me, he sprung up.“Good evening, Sir,” he said. enthusiastically. “I am so sorry I wasn’t able to see you earlier today; I’m on

ADAMI furrowed my brows upon meeting the door open. It was strange.Who could possibly be on the rooftop at this time of the night?I walked in and looked around. I hadn’t been there in a while, so everything looked new. I’m sure my mom had some things changed here, but it looked extremely new to me. As I walked towards the seating area, I saw someone and halted. I tiptoed backwards quietly and began observing the person. I wasn't surprised that my footsteps weren’t heard because the person didn’t see me. Thankfully, the lights were sort of bright, so I could tell it was a lady.Wait a damn minute. I knew who the person was.Valeria? What were the odds? And why was she there instead of her work station??I observed her more; she looked like she was crying because I watched her clean her face angrily. To my amazement, she started weeping, but she was quiet about it; she didn’t want anyone to hear her. I don’t know why I suddenly felt bad for her. I didn’t know what to do; I couldn’

Once I was done taking a shower, I checked my phone and saw missed calls from Nicole and Terrence. I had to give Nicole a call because she had left me multiple texts.“I had to go home because I felt so sick, babe.” I responded, sitting on the large bed. “Really? I knew I shouldn’t have agreed to you taking my shift.” “It wasn’t your fault, babe; besides, I’m better now.” I said, forcing myself to let out a little laugh. “Are you sure?” She asked. “Of course I am.” I responded. “Okay, are you still home? ADAMI sank into the sofa and heaved a heavy sigh as I started rethinking a whole lot of things. I didn't want to do this; it wasn't supposed to play out this way. At first, I wanted to do it to punish my mother, but it felt horrible, and the moment I changed my mind, Valeria begged me not to. Normally, I wouldn't do something like this, so why did I choose to help her? I looked up at the ceiling and started counting the light bulbs. At that moment, my phone lit up. I had been receiving multiple calls from a lot of people. I checked it; it was my mother. She had been calling me since we left the hospital, and I sincerely had nothing to say to her. I watched it ring and went ahead to continue with my activity. My phone lit up again; it was a text from her. I read it from the notification bar. "I know you are at work; pick up your calls!" I groaned angrily and took in a deep breath before dialing her number because I knew the call was going to drain me. "Adam?" She began. "Explain you

I knew Nicole would be confused and at a loss for words. I knew lots of things were going to occur, and I was mentally preparing myself for that. Was it working? Hell to the no. "Are you ready?" he asked, pursing his lips. "Are you?" I asked."I'm ready if you are," he responded.I shrugged, "then let's do this." My insides were twisting. We walked towards the front desk, and a lot of my colleagues surrounded there, murmuring slowly. I bit my bottom lip hard out of fear. I turned to look at him; he looked at me and held my hand tightly then smiled, which calmed me for some odd reason. "Is this how you work?" he asked with a stern voice, which caused them to disperse immediately. Of course, they gave me those judgmental looks before leaving. He then turned to me, held my shoulders, and

VALERIA"Oh my goodness, oh my goodness," I kept chanting as we entered the car. I couldn't believe all that had just transpired. I knew that the news had spread out; everything was definitely plastered on the news. I hadn't mentally prepared for this. I didn't even think that everyone would know this way. What if my sister saw it on the news?"Shit!" I exclaimed."You are too loud," Adam stated. I turned to him. His head was leaned on the headrest, and his eyes were closed. His phone rang; he looked at it and dropped it. For three minutes, he had been getting numerous phone calls. He didn't seem anxious; he was very calm, and that irked me."How are you so at peace right now?" I asked."What do you want me to do, Valeria? Act anxious like you?" He asked, his eyes still closed."I'm not anxious." I lied. I was terrified. I turned off my phone because I was so anxious. I could feel my intestines twisting. I felt like throwing up. VALERIA Listening to everything he said regarding the contract made my stomach churn. I wanted to get up and leave his office. I wanted to tell him that I had changed my mind, but it was too late. As he listed every clause, I balled up my fists, attempting to calm myself down. My heart raced. I believe he noticed my nervousness because he asked, "Do you want to take your words back?" I knew I wanted to say yes. I wanted to say, 'Yes, I'm sorry for wasting your time, but I can't do this.' But I refrained from doing so."No, no, I don't," I responded firmly while trembling inside. I dug my fingernails into my palm, trying to distract myself from my nerves, but it was ineffective. I silently prayed for all this to be over. The only thing keeping me going was the fact that my sister was going to be fine. She was going to be healthy. That was all I was looking forward to. So, all this was worth it.In due time, the meals I ordered were brought to the office, and he had finished with the c

ADAMI buried my face in my hands. The work was seriously getting to me, but I was figuring everything out slowly, but that was something. At exactly 8 a.m., I had already freshened up and headed to my office to figure out how to fix the mess my mother had made. I was already 2 hours into the “fixing”, and I already figured something out which was something. My stomach rumbled. I checked my Rolex; it was a few minutes past 10. I needed to eat something. Valeria was definitely going to come here so we could draw up the contract, but I didn’t specify when. However, I was certain that she would come this morning; I mean, it was a matter of life and death. Come to think of it, I still didn’t understand why we needed to be in an arranged marriage. I was willing to help her for free. I simply wanted to help her. When she knelt in front of me, I put myself in her shoes; trust me, I hardly did that. I felt her pain, I felt hurt, and I felt pity.So I was shocked when she declined that offer.

VALERIAThe moment I was done with all I said with my knees on the ground, I started weeping. I was weeping because I was so embarrassed. I couldn’t look at him anymore; I couldn’t even look at myself. Was it that bad?Was that how dire the situation felt?I felt so bad. The things that kept coming to mind were my sister’s face on that hospital bed and the call we had where I promised her that she would live. I gritted my teeth. I couldn’t even get up. I was on my freaking knees, something that I promised never to do, no matter how desperate I was, but there I was. There I freaking was. Begging. The floor was creating a little puddle with my tears. I couldn’t stop myself; I didn’t even understand why. At that moment, I felt a hand on my arm, which made me look up. He held a handkerchief out to me. I looked at it, then looked at him.He huffed and used the handkerchief to clean my tears. Then helped me get up. My knees were wobbly; I almost fell.“Woah, careful.” He said as he assi

ADAMI wanted to call the driver to come pick me up but decided at the last minute to do so on my own. My journey back to the hotel was a quick one, considering how hungover and tired I was. I parked the car and headed for the entrance, silently hoping to see Valeria’s face. I wanted to apologize for all I said that morning. I wanted to take it all back, I shouldn’t have done that to her. It was a win-win, but still, that was a messed-up thing to propose to someone who clearly was going through so much. As the door slid open, I looked at the front desk. There were a male and a female sitting and she wasn’t one of them. I felt disappointed. Once they recognized my presence, they both got up abruptly, forcing me to conceal a giggle.“Good evening, boss.” The lady said, clearing her throat. I recognized her immediately. She was the one who spilled my coffee on me that day. “How are you doing?” I asked when I got closer. “Perfect, boss. In fact, more than perfect.” The man responded. I

I didn’t know exactly why that happened, but I felt too emotional about the entire thing concerning the hotel. I mean, the financial decline was crazy, and it was still shocking that the press had no information about it, but the fact that my mum fell for his tricks after he showed how horrible of a person he could be made me so disappointed. I wasn’t expecting it from a woman who basically made that hotel what it was. I just wasn’t. Matters of the heart cannot be understood???? That’s bull, if you ask me; that’s total bull. She should have done better, and deep down, she knew. I sincerely hoped that everything would be fine. I mean, I know I could fix everything, but I wanted it to be done as soon as possible. As soon as I couldn’t feel my legs anymore, I proceeded to the couch.
