ETHAN'S POV
"If you don't go right now that entire family will be dead by dawn!" My father's beta, Griffin, warns in a voice fraught with apprehension, like people dying in our Kingdom is something new.
"My blood isn't enough to save everyone." I snort in annoyance.
Sometimes I feel sick of being the all-time saviour. And even more tired of carrying burdens I didn't invoke. Just because I carry it all so well, doesn't mean it isn't heavy. I would gladly shake it off if it were the kind of burden that can change shoulders. But it's like a load tied to my back, only my death can wipe it away.
I keep wondering how less ominous my life would be if my father's greed for endless land and infinite wealth had not brought an horrendous catastrophe upon the Kingdom and me. While he achieved all that he desired, it came with a tremendous cost, a curse that keeps taking countless lives of our people.
He raided weak packs and murdered innocents to create the vast and wealthy Kingdom he rules now. But he would give it all back if only it would end the curse.
He and his soldiers slayed a teenage boy during a raid on a small, weak pack two decades ago. The boy was the only child of an old woman. She couldn't physically harm them for revenge. So she laid a curse upon our entire Kingdom.
Every fall season has become a nightmare. Too many people fall sick, and none survives no matter how much their families fight to cure them. Hundreds of children and parents die to pay for a sin they played no hand in committing.
As if that isn't punishment enough, something even more terrifying began causing more deaths and fear. People lose their sanity when they shift into their wolf form. They become savage beasts that attack even their own families. We have no medicine to cure them either, unless that medicine is my blood.
The old woman must have wanted my father to feel the same amount of pain she felt while holding the cold body of her son in her arms. So she made me the sacrificial lamb.
While casting her curse, she stated that only my death or that of my mate would lift it. The suffering of our people will only end when I, the strongest crown prince, will willingly sacrifice my own life or that of my fated mate to pay for my father's atrocity.
I was only four when the sin was committed but she chose to cast that appalling burden on my shoulders. Now every soul that dies is a reminder that I should be dead so they can live.
I could have sacrificed my life a long time ago to end their suffering. But my brother is too young and irresponsible to take over the throne. He will probably never be fit to run the Kingdom.
But I wonder how much longer the people can withstand losing their loved ones or the chilling fear of losing their sanity when they shift during any fall season. I discovered that my blood can heal them a few months ago, but I don't have a tonne of it to heal everyone. I will soon be dead if I keep draining myself.
My family keeps reminding me that there is another way. That my life doesn't have to be the one that ends for the suffering to stop. I have the option of finding my fated mate and sacrificing her instead, like she played any part in harming innocents in a greedy quest for more land and wealth.
I am yet to find that special woman that was meant to bring me peace. Truth is I chose not to look for her. I worry that if I found her my family and everyone else would demand that I sacrifice her life instead of mine, after all I am their beloved Prince and she will be an unknown stranger.
While I would love to live just as long as everyone else, sacrificing someone else isn't an option for me, least of all the one person that I am destined to love. I chose not to look for her, because this magnificent palace isn't a happy place for her to be. We have the amount of staggering wealth and land that every King dreams of having. But neither the gold nor the big Kingdom was worth the repercussions.
"I would never ask you for this kind of help if it were not greatly needed, you know that." Griffin insists, seeming too concerned about a stranger's life than usual.
"My blood doesn't flow like a river, Griffin. I can't just cure all your friends because you ask me to."
He lowers his head and stays silent for a long time before speaking again.
"Seven little kids and their mother are going to die unless you find it in your heart to heal them with your blood. I don't mean to pressure you, God knows you have enough to deal with already. But I think our people will have more hope in us and the future of this Kingdom if you save this family." He adds and everyone turns their anxious stares at me.
They all know better than to push, because if I ever get tired decide to pull the rug from under their feet, the people will no longer respect them as royals.
An entire family of seven kids and a mother are however not the kind of thing I would turn my back at. I know so many others are dying, but hopefully no other parent is losing over half a dozen kids and her own life.
"How far are they from here?" I ask.
"Their home is a little far from the northern border. That's why we need to leave now, otherwise those kids won't see tomorrow. I am so glad you're considering helping." He answers in the most beseeching tone.
I snort in disappointment. I had hope it would be close, I wouldn't have to meet too many people that will obviously be pleading for my help. I don't blame them, no one wants to die when there is even the slightest chance they can survive. The fact that I can't heal everyone is disheartening.
"I luckily met Tracy Reynolds on my way here. She offered to go all the way to our northern border with you, just to keep you company. She said she will only be taking a few minutes to prepare. She may already be at the gate as we speak." Griffin informs wearing the brightest of smiles.
I would appreciate Tracy's help anytime, she is the most supportive and loyal person I know. She is a friend that is always offering to help even when not asked to. Everyone trusts her including the majority of our people. My own family thinks that I should make her my chosen mate so that she can take over the throne after my death.
I have no doubt she would make a passionate Queen. But I am not ready to make anyone my chosen mate, yet. Tracy may be totally qualified to run the Kingdom as long as the curse is lifted. I am however afraid that I wouldn't be able to give her the love she deserves if I make her my mate now. I hate letting her close because with the burden I have I will definitely not make the best company.
"Tell her that I appreciate her eagerness to help. But I will not be traveling with an escort, so it's not safe for her to come." I say just as an excuse to reject the offer to have her company.
Griffin grudgingly nods his head, my father shrugs his shoulders in disappointment. He however doesn't say a word to verbally express his discontent and I feel relieved.
"You and Tracy would make a legendary royal couple. Our Kingdom would thrive so well that the out-turn would be worth your mate's life." Mother boldly comments.
Unlike father who is always hesitant to ask me to let my mate pay for his sins, mother keeps openly pushing me to find her and let her be the sacrificial lamb. I love her for the sole reason that she is my mother, but otherwise she is a self-centered, vile human just like her husband.
"No innocent stranger is going to pay for a sin she didn't commit nor enjoy it's fruits." I state firmly.
"Hundreds of innocent strangers have already died to pay for that sin. Your mate will be the heroine whose life will end the suffering of an entire Kingdom. I am sure she will feel special." She wickedly argues and I shoot her a glare.
"How I wish your head was considered worthy of lifting the curse. Perhaps then you would know why no one desire to have their life unfairly taken." I say and her mouth falls open in shock.
"Your mother is simply fighting to have her amazing son live a long, well-lived life that he deserved. I am sorry that she had to point out that it will cost you your fated mate." Father apologizes on her behalf in a cautious tone.
"At least I grew up surrounded by the wealth you gathered from those brutal raids, my mate will probably be a kind girl from a poor background who has never enjoyed a thing she didn't rightful earn. She doesn't deserve the pain, not even on my behalf." I reply and he simply shrugs his shoulders again.
"If going back in time was possible I would go back to that fateful moment and cut that woman's head before she utters a single word to curse us." He mutters, suddenly looking lost in thought.
"Would it be more prudent to spare her son's life instead?" I question.
"Yes . . . of course." He nods his head vigorously. "It was definitely the right thing to do. Sorry I sounded like the old me. But surely you understand that we cannot be as good as you, you've a connection with the Goddess of life, you're like perfection personified." He defends.
"What you choose to do has nothing to do with which Goddess you have a connection with." I correct standing up from my seat. Wish I had enough time to prepare myself for this long journey but it came as a surprise just like everything else I have had to deal with since I took over the throne from my father.
"Wait for me at the gate." I say to Griffin and see a smile finally break through his glim expression.
I stride out of the room and close the door behind me. I immediately hear them start a serious discussion about me, doesn't even wait to make sure I am gone.
"He acts incredibly calm for a king that plans to sacrifice his life to save those of his people." Mother comments, trying to sound proud but her voice comes out strained with emotional pain.
"Sometimes true heroes are the ones that smile through silent pain, cry behind closed doors and fight battles no one knows about." I hear Griffin reply, sounding honestly proud.
"Yes, our son is inhumanly perfect, he is unlike me in every way." My father painfully mutters.
I walk away to spare my ears from his raving. He kind of loves ranting about his mistakes and I am tired of listening.
I walk to my room and put on a pair of boots before making my way out of the palace.
Tracy's tall frame is the first thing I see the moment I swing the front door open. I huff in annoyance as she is the last person I wanted to meet right now. Her eyebrows shoot up and as soon as she notices my expression.
"You don't look happy to see me." She observes in a sad tone looking down at her short dress and boots. "I came to escort you to the northern border. Do you want me to change the dress?"
I am well aware that she dresses the best she can to impress me. It's a stupid act because I am not going to be alive long enough to be a husband. That's the reason I push her away even when I know she is the best candidate for the throne I will leave behind. She is the kind of woman I would want as my mate if my life was normal. She is just a loyal friend, but I trust that she will take good care of both my family and the Kingdom once I am gone.
"It's too late for you to change, we are in a hurry. But you're welcome to watch over the place while I am gone. My parents will definitely be thrilled to have you around." I say walking past her.
"I will wait here until you come back. Please be careful for me!" She yells, sounding genuinely worried, like there is anything out there that can hurt me.
"Sure." I answer without looking back.
EMMA'S POVI should have walked this journey a long time ago, but I stupidly waited until my own family betrayed me and things got this ugly. Now my feet feels sore and my bones ache from running.I had hoped to have crossed the borderline before nightfall, but it's already dark and I am several metres away from the visible line of bonder posts. While taking this path made my journey a lot longer, avoiding trouble with the pack soldiers that patrol the border at night was more important. Getting caught leaving the pack before being officially banished would earn me a prison sentence. But I was sure I would safely cross to the other side using this path because it's so close to the famous and mysterious Goldenheart Kingdom. No one expects an attack from the massive Kingdom and there are no rogues that live within its borders. My guess is our pack soldiers do not patrol this area much because it's so close to the golden posts that mark the borderline of Goldenheart Kingdom.Even in dark
ETHAN'S POVShe looks pretty enough to win a beauty contest despite the dirt and bruises on her face. I knew my mate would not be ordinary, but I didn't expect her to have the features of my childhood fantasy Princess, including a pair of big eyes that make her look like the most innocent soul on earthShe looks like a powerless angel that ended up in a messy situation. But I know that faces can be deceivingI cannot know who she really is until she wakes up and tells me. I cannot just assume that her angelic looks are a perfect reflection of her character just because I feel spellboundI wasn't ready to find her now. I am supposed to give up my life soon to lift the curse, having a mate that needs looking after complicates everythingI have the overwhelming urge to embrace her tightly and promise her the world while I breathe in her delightful scent. But I will not always be here to look after her. It's best if I restrain myself from showing her any affection at all so that she won't
EMMA'S POVWhy on earth am I still breathing if I am dead? Why do I still feel pain? I thought death was supposed to be a peaceful, endless rest. This feels nothing like it.I hesitantly force my eyes open expecting to find myself in a dark, harrowing world of the dead. But my eyes are greeted by beauty and splendour. My shocked eyes look around the magnificent room with amazing art on the walls and expensive furniture spread across the room. The pillows beneath my head feels soothingly soft like they are made of feather. I have never been allowed into a room so refined before.I literally jump in alarm when I notice the girl seated next to the bed, her dark, steely eyes watching me. She smiles kindly and I hesitantly relax again."Where am I?" I ask."This is the palace of Goldenheart Kingdom. Our powerful king saved you, otherwise you would be dead." The girl answers, her sweet smile fading. Her words sends a cold chill through my veins. My whole body goes stiff with shock.Goldenhe
ETHAN'S POV"A wolfless girl cannot have been destined to be the Queen of this Kingdom. I don't mean to demean your mate, but I think it's obvious that she was fated to die in your place and save us the pain of losing a great King. Tracy will make a perfect wife once you make her your queen. I don't know why that is hard for you to see." Mother confidently says like she is speaking of a sheep that has no right to keep living.I knew bringing my mate here was a huge mistake. The pressure to sacrifice her life in place of mine has mounted just because she is no longer an unknown person living far away. I have a feeling that she is more than what she seems to be. But that's just me. Her looking weak has lead my family to think that she was meant to die on my behalf and lift the curse. Not having a wolf now could mean that she could one be like me. But everyone seems to assume that she seems weak because she is not meant to be missed after her death. They all regarded me the same way befo
EMMA'S POVI quickly sit up on the bed as the door creaks open and a lady in an opulent green dress and lovely golden necklace walks in.She must be a royal and I look like a beggar compared to her. I am in a buggy blue dress that I was given by the servant that brought me food. It's better than the torn, bloody clothes I had on before though.I quickly sit up on the bed as the door creaks open and a lady in an opulent green dress and lovely golden necklace walks in.The woman smiles kindly as she walks to the chair beside the bed and sits."How are you feeling?" She asks like a concerned mother but I notice a hint of disdain in her voice. I did not expect genuine respect from a royal like her, not when I look like I escaped from slavery."I think I am well, My lady." I answer, acting like I haven't noticed that her kind smile is fake."I am King Ethan's mother." She reveals in a proud tone.I don't see any resemblance between their faces but I am sure she is telling the truth. I would
ETHAN'S POV I wonder what troubling news Tracy found out that Griffin had to pull me out of my meeting with two of our allies. I walk into my spacious office and find her seated on the guest seats with two other people I have never met before. Her hair and clothes look unusually dull, like she didn't have time to style the hair and put on something exquisite like she does every time she shows up here. She also appears more nervous than yesterday. She offered to find out more information about my beautiful mate just so I could know the reason three soldiers were chasing after her even after crossing our border. I wonder if whatever Tracy discovered was really too important that they couldn't wait for my meeting to end. "What was do urgent? I literally had to leave an important meeting to come here." I say halting not so far from the door. Tracy stands and takes a couple of steps forward. Your mate was escaping from being arrested! she killed three of her friends." Tracy reveals
ETHAN'S POVI needed a break to make my mind feel at peace with the decision I just made. I have never felt this amount of guilt after passing a sentence against a cold-blooded murderer before. I made the right decision, but the unneeded mate bond makes my heart feel like it has been frozen. I have told myself a million times already that I shouldn't care about a murderer. But the feeling doesn't go away. I need to lay down for minute and find my resolve. The council will probably take an entire hour to gather and be briefed about the culprit and her crimes before the actual court session starts. Hope that by then my heart will have overcome the unnecessary grief. My chest feels heavier than the rest of me as I push the door to my room open and step inside. I sigh in frustration when I find my mother waiting, taping her foot against the floor like she has been here forever. She has a cup of tea in her hands that she sets down on the small table beside the bed and literally runs up
EMMA'S POVThis must be a bad dream, the worst I have ever had. Did he really say I would get executed? For killing who exactly? I am wolfless and weak compared to them, where would I get the strength to hurt anyone?"This is . . . absurd! Who . . who do you think I killed?" I stutter, my heart beating hard enough for someone close to hear.My mate leans back on his seat, his features darkening with uncontrollable anger. "I told you not to waste my time!" His eyes glow with rage just like they did before he burned those three soldiers alive. "You poisoned three of your friends before escaping into my kingdom. Did you really think you could just stay comfortably in my palace and I would never know the evils you have done?" He snarls and my mouth falls open with shock."That's insane! I have never had friends and I have . . . never harmed anyone! " I shriek and hear him and a few councilmen snort."I was running from Silver moon pack because my family hated me, not because I hurt anyone
EMMA'S POVI move my thick hair sideways as Ethan places the most stunning of necklaces around my neck and clasps it at the back. The mirror in front of us reflects my adorned neck and the shimmering necklace makes me look like a refined, noble woman.I have never worn jewelry before. I don't plan on adding more as that would make me look overly spangled like many royal women. The necklace has a unique design, three diamonds shaped like three stars and a crescent moon hang at the front while the rest of the beads are made of silver and are quite tinny. I think I can always wear it, with any dress. "You look stunning." My mate compliments as I turn around to face him. I believe his words, but guess who always looks more breathtaking . . . him. He never needs to wear anything or style his hair in a certain way to look like beauty personified. "Thank you for this. I am not a fan of jewelry, but I like this one." I say with a genuine smile. He has given me more gifts since I arrived h
ETHAN'S POV I feel strangely more refreshed than usual after spending the night sleeping beside my mate. Her heavenly scent was so lulling that I couldn't resist the urge to pull her closer and bury my nose into her neck. She was fretful at first, but she slowly relaxed and slipped back to sleep. She seemed grateful that I was there despite our infelicitous past. I imagine the nightmare had left her shaken, her body was quivering as I settled in the bed beside her. I was relieved when she managed to fall back asleep on her own. I watched her beautiful face for half an hour after waking up earlier than usual to make sure she has a personal servant that we can trust to prepare her breakfast. We will soon be parting ways because I need her to be somewhere safe before the day of atonement. And I want her to have someone truly loyal and caring by her side. The woman I chose used to be my nanny when I was a child, I felt closer to her than to my parents. I am sure she will care for Emma
EMMA'S POVI wake up huffing and puffing, my body sweating from the terror of the appalling nightmare. Turns out laying on a King size bed and being surrounded by gold isn't a guarantee to peaceful sleep. I have had terrifying nightmares before, but none was as chilling as the scene that jolted me awake from my sleep. My heart is still pounding hard from the frightening dream. It felt so real. I can't help worrying that it may be a warning of what I will happen to me in future. I know it was just a dream, but I saw my life being taken to lift the curse. My arms and legs were bound to the wooden table I was laying on so that I wouldn't escape. Ethan's parents and my sister stood aside watching. They all grinned deviously as a soldier with a ruthless look stepped forward, a sharp, shimmering blade in his muscular hands. I let out a scream as he raised it high up in the air then brought it down on my chest. I am quite relieved to see that it was a dream, but I may have actually scream
EMMA'S POVI may still have little love for my family, but I never wanted to see any of them again. Joanne looked like a shadow of the lady she once was. It took me several seconds to recognise her face without makeup. Unlike me she was loved by our parents and her mate, why would she run from all the sweet attention and show up here looking like the old me? I had enough troubles to deal with before, but she had to show up here pretending she is sorry. I know better than to believe her pretences, because Joanne can never regret anything she did to benefit herself. Did she find out that I am here and thought that she can come live in a bigger palace? King Ethan didn't look like he wanted her and neither do I. I wonder if she saw the sick people on her way here and still thought that this is the kind of heaven she seeks to live in. Has she also heard that I am likely to die to lift the curse? She should take her greed back to Silver moon, because she won't find the extravagant life s
ETHAN'S POV"You got banished by your husband?" I question and the Luna shakes her head. If she wasn't banished then she run away. "Did he harm you?" I ask even though I don't feel that concerned."Not physically. But he broke my heart in the worst way possible. I can never go back to him." She answers, her eyes filling up with tears. "Does this have anything to do with finding your sister?" I ask and she shakes her head once more."No. I stopped searching for my sister because he was extremely angry after that time I spoke about her in presence of our wedding guests." She responds and I feel disgusted by her selfish thinking. How could she stop searching for her sister simply because her stupid husband doesn't like it? "So what went wrong then?" "I found out that he has been having fun with other women. He didn't deny it when I confronted him. Instead he brought one of his mistresses home and introduced her like it was the most normal thing to do. When I complained he got furious
EMMA'S POVThis ornate royal structure was definitely built to convey wealth and grandeur. I imagine there is no other palace of any pack that has pieces of precious stones hammered into the wall surrounding it's massive guest hall. I am awed by the plush decor, but it's still hard to happily smile like I am home. It's true that no one seems thrilled to see me. The groups of servants we have bypassed stared and whispered amongst themselves, but their faces bore no sign of friendliness. They in fact look displeased to see me.I don't mind as long as no one is yelling out insults at me like the time I was getting dragged to the courthouse and everyone was confidently calling me names. "Don't mind their stares, they are just astounded to see you survived all the anguish and still look healthy." Lilian comforts. I nod even though I know they are staring for a different reason. They are wondering why my mate has chosen not to sacrifice me instead of his own life. He is obviously the most
EMMA'S POVI hate being in this room even when he isn't here. The shimmering gold doesn't take away the hate I have for the person that slept here before. I wonder how she feels being in a cell now after sleeping in an incredible little heaven like this. She must be devastated, because if she succeeded no woman would have been greater than her. She would be the beloved wife of the powerful King Ethan. But somehow things fell apart when she least expected. I really wonder how Ethan found out she was fooling him since she seemed quite in control of the situation. I thought since he adored her so much he would not punish her for anything, turns out he is truly unforgiving.I hear the door click open and turn my nervous gaze in that direction. Before Ethan left he said that he would send someone here to keep me company and show me around the palace if I wish to take a break from staying in here. I was however not expecting that person to be an excited, smiling Lilian. She looks pretty in
ETHAN'S POVI knew from the start that she would not agree to return here with me. But I could not leave her out there, not when she was already left locked up in an empty room to starve to death. I imagine no man of this Kingdom has ever endured the amount of physical and emotional pain that she has been through. I turned on her when she needed me most, now there is very little time left for me to mend everything and leave her with a good memory of the person I am.I used my blood to heal her wounds. But that's something too small to repay all the suffering she has endured because of my mistakes. I want to make things right, if only there is enough time. The curse can't wait another year to be lifted, not when over a hundred sick people have already gathered outside the gates of my palace, hoping that I can do something to save them from their pain.I wonder if my mate will ever think of me after I am gone. I would feel honoured to be remembered by her. She would definitely be happ
ETHAN'S POV "I understand why you don't want to be here. I am sorry I said so many awful things to you and I failed to protect you because I trusted the wrong person. You however won't safe outside the walls of this palace." I say in the most gentle voice I have ever used. But I can see that she is too scared of me that she wouldn't believe a word I say. I don't blame her. I have put her through hell so nothing I can say will convince her that I am not a monster."I would rather be out there than in here." She responds in a shaky voice. "This is your room, right?" She questions, once more gazing at the gilded furniture and the eye-catching drawings on the walls. "No. This one is yours. I thought you would like it." I say, trying to get a positive reaction from her, but she scoffs. I feel worried because she still seems weak. She yawns and I instantly remember what her talkative friend had said. She has not eaten for days! She must be starving."I will go get you something to eat."
