Chapter Eighty: Emily's POV

After Dr. Simmons left the room, I turned my attention back to Daniel and gently took his hand in mine, my fingers trembling slightly as I spoke.

"Daniel," I whispered. "Please, you have to wake up. I really need you to wake up."

I held his hand tightly, silently begging him to respond, to give me any sign that he could at least hear me. But he remained still.

"I'll be good to you, I promise," I continued, the words pouring out in a desperate rush. "I'll forget everything, all the hurt you've caused me. Just please, please wake up."

My heart was pounding in my chest, a wild, chaotic beat that almost drowned out my own thoughts. Why did he do it? Why did he take the bullet for me? The questions swirled in my mind, demanding answers I wasn't sure I was ready to face.

"Daniel," I called out softly, my fingers tightening around his. "Why did you do it? Why did you save me? You should have just…”
