Jayden gaze was sharp, almost searching for something that was not lost. There was something uncertain about the way he looked at her, like he was feeling back layers she didn't even know she had, searching for cracks or anything wrong, which she did not understand.
"Who were you talking to?" Jayden repeated his question, his tone edged with suspicion.
Emma squared her shoulders.
"The guard you sent to me. Tyler," she replied.
At that, his expression shifted. His lips curled slightly, but it was not quite a smirk, it was something colder.
"You think you're funny?" he asked, his voice low and controlled.
“What?” Emma frowned, taken aback by his question.
"I said," he stepped closer, lowering his voice to a near whisper, "Don't anger me."
A strange, suffocating tension settled on Emma, as she didn't understand what he meant by that. He had just come to her room, knocked on the door, and wanted her not to anger him. Why? What caused all this?
Jayden's piercing eyes held hers for a long moment as if daring her to push back.
Emma swallowed hard, the weight of his presence pressing against her nerves like an invisible hand.
But before she could respond, he took a step back, his entire demeanor shifting like a switch had flipped.
He brushed a hand over his pristine suit, straightening his cufflinks as if their exchange had just not happened.
"Prepare yourself," he said smoothly.
"We're having visitors over for brunch."
Emma blinked at the abrupt change in subject.
"I expect you to be presentable," he continued, ignoring her confusion. "And don't embarrass us."
She wanted to demand answers, she wanted to question the sudden shift of the conversation and why she had to look more presentable if they had a visitor, but she could already see it would be pointless asking Jayden, for all this was meaningless. He had already dismissed her.
The moment, Jayden stepped out of the room. Emma turned back to search for Tyler, but he was far from gone.
Emma was worried about why or when he left the room, cause she didn't see him passing through the door. So, what does that mean?
But she tried not to dwell on it. She believed things happened, and maybe she didn't notice when he left.
But a small part of her hated how he easily vanished. It was like he had never been here when Jayden was talking to her like she had imagined the whole conversation they had.
She was not going dwell on it, but she could, she promised.
••
In the afternoon, Emma decided that she would not give them any reason to pick on her today. She would play along according to how they wanted her to. She would act like she belonged here, at least for today and for the visitor, and decided to make all this come to reality.
She went to her closet, rifling through the dresses that had been chosen for her. Most were extravagant, dripping with wealth and status, designed to make a statement. But she had no interest in standing out.
She settled on something simple, an elegant navy blue dress that was not too revealing, not too modest. It fit her just right, highlighting her shape without making her uncomfortable. As she ran her fingers over the fabric, smoothing out invisible wrinkles, a strange sense of detachment settled over her.
This isn't me. None of this is me.
She had spent so much of her life fighting, resisting, clawing her way through the expectations forced upon her. And yet, here she was, dressing up, playing along, pretending like she belonged.
She started getting dressed and she was almost done when a sharp knock interrupted her.
For a brief moment, she thought and hoped it was Tyler. She didn't know why, but she just hoped it was him. Maybe because, despite everything, despite the way he confused her, there was something about him that felt different.
But when she opened the door, her heart sank. Standing there, arms crossed and displeasure written over her face was her sister-in-law.
Emma tensed immediately, already bracing herself for whatever insult was coming.
The woman's gaze raked over her with open disdain.
"What are you wearing?" she sneered.
"Excuse me?" Emma frowned.
"I asked," she said slowly, stepping inside without invitation, "what stupid clothes you were about to put on."
Emma clenched her fists in anger.
"It is a dress. A dress I chose by myself,” she replied.
Her sister-in-law let out a mocking laugh.
"A dress," she repeated, eyeing Emma again, then scoffed. "As if that could make a difference."
Emma's stomach twisted in annoyance. She had never had a good relationship with this woman. She had always made it clear that she thought Emma didn't belong, that she was not good enough. And today was no different.
"You know," her sister-in-law continued, walking further into the room as if she owned it, "I have been thinking about it for a while, and I still can't understand why my brothers made such a horrible choice."
Emma stiffened. She hated how those words still had the power to sting in her heart. She knew what people thought of her. She knew she was not the perfect woman they expected. But something about hearing it so bluntly, so effortlessly, still hurt.
Taking a deep breath, she met the woman's gaze.
"I deserve respect," she said evenly.
Her sister-in-law blinked, then laughed. A cold, mean laugh, like Emma had just said the most ridiculous thing in the world.
"Respect?" she repeated, shaking her head. "Oh, sweet girl."She stepped closer, her smile widening. "Never say those words again."
Emma clenched her jaw. “I…”
"You need to be very careful with your pride," she cut in smoothly, her voice dropping lower. "Because my brother is leaving you soon."
Emma froze on the spot. A chill ran down her spine.
Inside her room, warm and golden under a worn-out chandelier, Emma sat with her friend, their quiet laughter defying the atmosphere.“I’m so excited for you, Emma,” Teena said suddenly, her cheeks flushing brighter.“Why?” Emma asked, surprised by the sudden declaration.Teena turned to her, face glowing with excitement. Clutching the hem of her silk gown, she waltzed around the room in an exaggerated circle. “You’re going to the ball!” she exclaimed. “There’ll be so many nobles there. Maybe you’ll even find your mate!” Grabbing Emma’s hands, she gasped in excitement. “This could be it!”Emma’s expression didn’t mirror her friend’s enthusiasm. Slowly, she pulled her hands away, the spark of excitement slowly leaving Teena’s eyes.“Emma?” Teena called with a soft and uncertain voice.“I don’t think I want to go,” Emma admitted, her voice sharp. “Look at me. I’m nowhere near attractive. No one even likes me, so what’s the point of it all?”“That’s not true! I like you,” Teena interrupte
The heavy doors groaned as they slowly creaked open, flooding the dark, oppressive room with a stream of light. Emma, crumpled against the cold stone wall, shielded her eyes from the sudden brightness. Her hands, bruised and trembling, rested limply on her lap. For hours, she had banged against the huge doors, the relentless effort peeling the skin from her palms. The bright light spilled over her face, revealing delicate features smeared with dust and streaked with tears. Her once-luminous hair clung dimly to her skin, yet even in her exhausted state, an undeniable beauty lingered in her fragile frame. As Emma’s blurred vision adjusted, a familiar silhouette stood in the doorway, and her heart sank. Ever.Clad in an ornate gown that gleamed in the light, mocking Emma’s despair, Ever smirked as she stepped inside. Her eyes sparkled with satisfaction.“Well, well,” Ever drawled, tilting her head in mock pity. “Look at you, Emma. Such a mess.”Emma, too weak to stand, clenched her fists
Inside her room, Emma paced like a caged animal, her heart pounding with fury. Today was the day of Ever’s mating ceremony with the Sutherland Alpha. She clenched her fists. Ever had won every other battle, but Emma wouldn’t let her win this one.The lock clicked sharply, and Emma realized she was trapped again. They had locked her in, just as they always did. For a moment, despair threatened to overwhelm her, but something deep within her stirred. Her wolf.A growl rumbled in her chest as a sudden pull of strength coursed through her veins. With a furious cry, she slammed her body against the door. And soon it came open, there was a storm and it greeted her like icy needles as she ran into the night, her feet pounding against the ground. Her breath came in sharp gasps, but she didn’t stop. She couldn’t.The forest was dark but she didn’t care. She continued to run toward the clearing where the ceremony was taking place. Different scents filled her nose but her focus was solely on th
Chapter 4Emma lay crumpled in the dirt, the cold ground pressing against her cheek. Everywhere was silent, only the sound of the bird and footsteps could be heard Her body trembled as sharp pain spread through her ribs where someone had kicked her. She blinked slowly, trying to open up her eyes completely but the view she met made her shut her eyes down almost immediately. “What do we do with her?” a rough voice said cutting through the silence of the environment. It came from one of the men standing over her, fear crept in and she wiggled praying inwardly for the ground to open up and swallow her.“We should finish her off. She’s already half-dead,” Another voice answered, lighter but no less cruel. Emma’s chest tightened. She wanted to speak, to plead, but her mouth felt dry, and every breath burned. She shifted slightly, and the pain shot through her like fire.“No,” a third voice cut in sharp and desperate. “Why waste her? We could… you know, have a little fun first,” he title
Emma opened her eyes with a start, feeling a sharp headache hitting her. Her eyes caught the environment she was in. Everything seemed blurred, but one thing didn’t fail her ears; the constant beeping of a machine. She tried to open her eyes fully, but they felt heavy. With a deep breath, she finally opened them. The white ceiling and the white walls were the first things that caught her sight. She breathed repeatedly, unable to comprehend what was happening or where she was.She tried to remember how she got there, but everything seemed blank. Whenever she tried to recall, everything seemed to collapse, and she suddenly felt a huge headache. She relaxed her body, closing her eyes in an attempt to calm herself. She could smell the scent of the room, it smelled of antiseptic.Confusion clouded her mind. How had she gotten here? She groaned softly, attempting to push herself upright, but the dull ache in her head made her falter. The door suddenly creaked open and a nurse walked inside,
The moment the man mentioned his name, Emma’s body shook. She didn’t know why a stranger would go out of their way to save her. She didn’t understand exactly why. The man looked genuinely helpful and genuinely happy for her.“Can you tell me the reason why you saved me, if I may ask?” she questioned, maintaining eye contact with the man.“Of course, I have no reason,” he replied. “I saw you stranded on the road, and that is why I decided to save you. I don’t have bad intentions toward you. You don’t have to stress yourself. All you have to do is keep your mind at peace. Recover quickly so we can leave the hospital. Or do you like staying at the hospital, sleeping like this?”The man asked, and Emma wiggled her head in response. Even though the man was a stranger, the way he communicated with her, the way he conversed with her, made her feel at ease. The doctor opened the door and stepped inside, his eyes smiling at Emma.“Are you two having a private conversation, or should I excuse m
Immediately after she set foot in the man’s house, Emma marveled at it. The house was beautiful, a big mansion with various types of decorations. Everything in the house seemed special and specific. The walls were painted white and decorated with gold accents. She stared at it as if she were in heaven. The man noticed her reaction and cleared his throat, gaining her attention. Emma quickly wiggled her head and shifted her focus to him.“You are welcome to my home. I hope you recover quickly,” the man said.“Yes, I hope so,” she replied. The man led her to an empty room and told her to rest properly while he went to the kitchen to prepare food for her.Emma was shocked and asked, “Can you cook?”The man smiled. “I’m not going to brag. I’ll prepare the food, and you can judge for yourself if I can cook or not.”Emma smiled back and said, “Okay, no problem.”The man gestured toward the bed before stepping out and closing the door. Emma stared at the door and muttered, “I hope this isn’t
A grand bouquet has been arranged in the pack. In order to maintain and talk about the pack territory, they invite different alphas from nearby packs to discuss the critical issues going on. Particularly, the rising threat of outside impacts from crossing the alphas’ bother. They arrange the hall greatly, everywhere boozed with energy, as packs leaders dressed in their finest attire. They fill the long wooden table that was set across the room. Their conversation was obvious in the air. Their laughter evident in the eyes. Some conversations were friendly. They talked and joked about parties that they attended, while some were tense with teasing. At the top of the table, Jayden and Kale stood at the head of the room. Their presence was commanding, and it was impossible to ignore. Jayden leaned against the table. His sharp eyes were scanning the crowd as if looking for any signs of trouble. Kale was beside him. His arms were crossed on his chest. His eyes sat in a straight, focused

Emma stayed in her room for the next few days, avoiding everyone. It was not that she was scared. It was far from that. She just did not want to deal with the stares and the whispers of the inevitable judgmental glare. The twins already painted a certain image of her, and she had no interest in confirming or denying whatever notion they had. If they thought she was troubled, fine. Let them. She was used to being misunderstood. And besides, it was not like she had always like this and it was not like she had anywhere to go.The only person she could not seem to avoid was Tyler, her so-called bodyguard. At first, she had assumed his presence would be strictly professional, that he would stand guard outside her door, only stepping in if there was a threat. Instead, he was always around her, checking on her, making sure she was eating, asking if she needed anything. His presence was not overbearing, but it was persistence. Too persistence. And it was starting to grate on her nerves. On th
The walls of the room were thick, but not thick enough to drown out the voices arguing outside Emma sat up, her heartbeat steady, but curiosity burned through her like wildfire. The anger issues in their voices were unmistakable, the weight of the conversation pressing against her like an invisible force. She didn’t need to hear every word to know it was serious. She recognizes the voice as, Jayden’s, Kale’s, the Luna and the alpha king's. “Do not ever think of changing the moon goddess’ order,” The Alpha’s voice rang out, fork and absolute. “It will only bring ruin to the pack.” Emma bit her lips. The authority in his voice sent a chill down her spine. A brief silence followed the alpha words. Then she heard Kale's voice, it was kind of low that she could nearly catch up with what he was saying. “We are only saying that she…” “No!” Their father’s voice cut in like a blade. “You are my sons, but you will not defy the fate. If she is your mate, then she is yours. If you reject
What mark? She had never paid attention to anything unusual on her skin, and now they were acting as if she had been hiding some grand secret. It made no sense. They always found a way to stir up drama, and she was tired of it.Emma exhaled sharply, shifting on the bed. “What are you talking about?” she muttered twisting her upper body to try and look over her shoulder. But doing so, she lost her balance. This!!!A sharp sting shot up her arms as she hit the floor, face-fist, a startled yell escaping her lips immediately. For a moment, there was silence. Then Kale burst into laughter. “By the moon, that was the most pathetic thing I’ve ever seen,” he choked out between his laughter, clutching his stomach. Jayden only sighed, shaking his head. His expression was unreadable, but there was a flicker of amusement in his eyes. Emma groaned, her face burning with embarrassment. She gritted her teeth, her temper flaring. “Don’t just stand there like that. Help me up,” Still chuckling,
The first thing Emma felt was warmth. It surrounded her, cocooning her in a way that was oddly comforting. But the moment her consciousness returned, so did the memories, the rogues, the attack, the suffocating fear. Her eyes snapped opened panic seizing her chest as she bolted upright. She expected to be alone but she wasn’t. Her breath hitched as she realized she was lying in an unfamiliar room, one far to elegant to belong to her. The walls were dark, lined with intricate carving, and the heavy drapes cast long shadows across the dimly lit discs. Everything smelled fairly of wood and an oddly familiar scent that she couldn’t dispatch. Then suddenly her gaze met them. Jayden and Jake, they where sitting across the room, their gazes locked onto her the moment she moved. Emma stiffened. Something is definitely not right. She could feel it. The twins Everett wearing their unusual smirks, there was no mockery, no arroganc, just something unreadable in their eyes. “How do you fee
Emma stood still her heart pounding faster in her chest. Kale and Jayden stared at her with a knowing smirk displaying on their lips. “Are you serious about that?” Jayden repeated his voice was calm but edged with something she couldn’t quite place. She forced her to give a gentle nod. “Yes. Whatever it takes,” she replied confidently. They exchanged a glance then Kale leaned forward slightly. “Good then meet us in the woods tonight. And dress up well.” “Dressed up?” Emma blinked repeatedly “Why?” She questions. “Why? You don’t want to? I thought you said you would do whatever we ask you to do?” Kale raised an eyebrow. “Yes, I promise but why should I come to the wood? At night?” Jayden smirk widened. “No more questions! You heard him. Make sure you look nice. We don’t want you showing up looking like you just rolled out of bed with a snooze,” Jayden smiled devilishly. Confusion flicked in her eyes but she didn’t dare ask any other questions if she didn’t want the issue to be
The next morning, Emma rose with a sense of determination weighing on her shoulders. The Alpha's words from the previous day echoed in her mind, reminding her that she had no choice but to endure whatever the twins threw her way. Fighting back or allowing their actions to affect her would only give them more power over her.The best thing she could do now was to act as though their cruelty meant nothing to her. She decided to find a way to get on their good side and promised to do everything that would make them forgive her. She thought about making breakfast for them. She went to the kitchen, taking a deep breath and steadying herself. She wanted to remain peaceful, or at least survive in the process. Perhaps a gesture of goodwill would help. Cooking for them wasn't exactly something she wanted to do, but it was a way to extend an olive branch without outright begging for their forgiveness. She focused on preparing the meal with care, ensuring the food was cooked perfectly, well-sea
The twins were equally surprised by Emma’s boldness. How dare she slam the door in their face like that? The two of them exchanged angry glares before storming out, walking to their father’s office. They knocked on the door, and before their father’s voice could give them permission to enter, they burst the door opened and stepped inside. They stood in front of him in a way that made their father raise an eyebrow and drop the document in his hands, his eyes now focused on the two of them.“What’s wrong? Is everything okay?” he asked. The twins stepped further into the room.“Everything is not okay, Father. Not a bit of it is okay,” Kale started. “I mean, the brat that you brought home disrespected us in a way that could cause her trouble. How dare she slam the door on our face without our permission? That’s just out of line.”“She doesn’t get to behave like that to us, Father,” Jayden added immediately. The Alpha, focused all his attention on them.“Is that what she did? She slammed t
Emma marched forward to her room. She didn’t know what was wrong with the twins or why they thought they could transform their aggression on her. She walked to her bed and fell down heavily on it, her eyes magnetized to the ceiling.Obviously, she didn’t know why she suddenly missed her parent so much. She wished she could go back home, but she had already set her leg into this, and there was no way of going back.“I miss you, Mom,” she muttered, her heart freezing with different types of questions. Maybe if she was still with her mom, she wouldn’t be facing all this nonsense from those dramatic twins.Suddenly, her phone vibrated, and she flinched, sitting up on the bed and holding her chest. She was scared for a second. She picked up the phone and realized it was Damien calling. Happily, she slid the green button and pressed the phone against her right ear.“Hello, Damien,” she whispered happily.“Emma, how are you doing? I heard you moved to the pack. You didn’t even think to inform
