Chapter Ninety-Three
Bella smiled brightly and spoke with such joy, as if she had been waiting for this moment for a long time. The moment she finished speaking, the atmosphere became strange, but she pretended not to notice and repeated herself.
“I said I’m pregnant. I really am pregnant.” Bella said with a smile, her hand deliberately resting lightly on her stomach, rubbing it as if there was truly a tiny life forming inside her.
To prove she was really pregnant, Bella placed the pregnancy test paper on the table.
Max stared blankly at the title on the paper for a second, then immediately stood up, his face full of happiness as he tightly embraced Bella.
“Are you really pregnant? Why didn’t you tell me sooner? Do you know how much I’ve been looking forward to this moment? I’m so happy, my love. Finally, we’re going to have a baby.”
Bella despised Max’s embrace and touch, so she didn’t hug him back, but she also didn’t push him away. While Max was happily hugging her, oblivious to everything around them, he didn’t notice that the person sitting across from him was Pearl.
Bella glanced at Pearl, secretly feeling triumphant when she saw Pearl’s pale face and panicked expression. Pearl’s eyes widened as she stared at Max holding Bella, her gaze filled with a range of emotions: panic, hatred, anger, madness, fear, and despair.
All the darkness and despair were evident in Pearl’s eyes. Bella didn’t know what her best friend was thinking, but she was sure of one thing—Pearl was in despair.
But that didn’t mean Bella had any intention of sparing Pearl. Bella gently pushed Max away, ignoring his joy. She turned to Pearl with a smile and said,
“Pearl, what’s wrong? I just told you I’m pregnant. This is my first child and Max. Aren’t you going to congratulate us?”
Yes, you’re my best friend, so you should congratulate me. But look at your face, Pearl. I really want to know what you’re thinking right now. Look at how happy my husband, who is also your lover, is at hearing the news that I’m pregnant.
Hearing his wife mention Pearl, Max suddenly realized that Pearl and Levi were also there, watching and listening to them. He adjusted his mood but didn’t dare look Pearl in the eyes, not that he paid any attention to her now, as he was too busy rejoicing in the news his wife had just shared.
Pearl was startled when her name was called, her face pale but filled with hatred and resentment. Her throat felt as though it was being squeezed, making it impossible for her to utter a sound.
Anyone could clearly see Pearl’s awkward expression and the turmoil she was trying to suppress. Bella saw that Pearl just stared at her without answering, so she asked again.
“Pearl, why are you silent? I’m asking you, aren’t you going to congratulate me?”
Pearl was startled again. She couldn’t understand, couldn’t believe that Bella was pregnant. Thousands of questions flashed through her mind, all centered on one thought—how could Bella be pregnant?
Max had clearly said he mixed the drug she gave him into Bella’s milk every night. Even if it wasn’t 100% effective, it should have damaged Bella’s uterus enough to make it difficult for her to conceive. Yet, less than a month after Bella started drinking that drug, she was pregnant.
If Bella could still get pregnant, there was only one possible explanation—Max had lied to her. He lied about giving Bella the drug, and from the very beginning, he never agreed with her plan. He pretended to go along with it, but all along, he was deceiving her. Seeing Max’s joy now, Pearl knew she had been betrayed by the man she had always trusted.
Pearl still didn’t respond to Bella. She looked at Max, as if waiting for an explanation from him, but his silence only pushed her further into despair. Everything had happened within moments of Bella announcing her pregnancy, but to Pearl, it felt like falling into a bottomless pit.
“How can you be pregnant? This… this can’t be…” Pearl stammered. She was no longer clear-headed enough to give a proper response to the situation.
Bella, of course, had anticipated Pearl’s reaction when she revealed her pregnancy, but Pearl’s response exceeded her expectations.
Feigning ignorance of Pearl’s meaning, Bella said, “What are you talking about…? Max and I have been married for over four years now, so it was only a matter of time before I got pregnant. We didn’t plan to have a child before because I didn’t want my husband to feel pressured, but now that everything is settled—”
But before Bella could finish speaking, Pearl interrupted, “No, that’s impossible! How could you be pregnant? No way, I clearly gave you the medicine—”
*Bang* Max slammed his hand on the table, his gaze sharp and cold as it turned towards Pearl, carrying a warning. He looked at the woman opposite him with displeasure, Although he never thought Bella would publicly announce her pregnancy like that. But Pearl’s reaction truly disappointed him. He found her foolish, almost blurting out everything over a trivial matter.
“Miss Pearl, my wife is your close friend. She’s pregnant, and instead of congratulating her, you’re saying nonsense? Your words make me question your competence and professionalism,” Max said in a raised voice.
Pearl had already fallen into despair, and Max’s stern warning only deepened her hopelessness. She immediately stood up, though her legs felt weak. She couldn’t stay here any longer.
“I… I need to go to the restroom…” Pearl stammered before staggering away from the table.
Pearl’s departure made the atmosphere awkward. Bella covered her mouth, trying hard to suppress her laughter and hide the smile forming at the corners of her lips.
Bella watched Pearl stagger away and then, in a delicate and hurt manner, said, “Hic… hic… why did Pearl react like that? She should have congratulated me, shouldn’t she? Max, did I do something to upset her? I should apologize. I don’t want her to be sad.”
Of course, Bella wasn’t foolish to follow Pearl as she said she would. Just as she had expected, the moment she finished speaking, Max immediately embraced her and gently comforted her.
“Don’t cry. I really don’t understand what’s wrong with her. A friend like that doesn’t deserve to be your friend. It’s good that she left. Don’t get upset; it’s bad for the baby.”
Bella still sobbing pitifully in Max’s arms, shook her head and said, “No, I must have done something to upset Pearl, which is why she acted that way. Don’t speak of her like that. I… I’m worried something bad might happen to her… I still want to go check on her…”
Though Bella said this, she had no intention of getting up. But Max believed she genuinely wanted to go find Pearl, and he was afraid if they met, Pearl might reveal everything, just as she almost did earlier. If he hadn’t interrupted, Pearl would have surely mentioned the medicine he had put in Bella’s milk.
“You stay here. I’ll go talk to her. She’s really making herself unlikable. Bella, you’re too kind for inviting her to dinner with us,” Max quickly stood up and said. Though his tone with his wife was gentle, it was clear he was irritated and found the situation bothersome.
Before leaving, Max didn’t forget to say to Levi, “I’m really sorry you had to witness such unpleasantness.”
Only Levi and Bella were left at the dining table. Bella gently wiped away the tears she had forced out. Levi, who had remained silent the entire time, quietly observed everything with a calm expression.
“Ha… finally, the two nuisances are gone. I feel so much better; the atmosphere is so much fresher,” Bella sighed. She hadn’t expected herself to act so convincingly; after all, controlling her emotions to avoid giving herself away was a challenge for her.
What amused and pleased her even more was that Pearl’s reaction had far exceeded her expectations.
Bella really wanted to follow the two of them to see what they would talk about, given that Pearl didn’t seem to be in the best state of mind. She was curious about what might happen between them at this moment, her mind already spinning with 7749 dramatic scenarios.
It was then that Bella noticed Levi staring intently at her. She raised an eyebrow, her expression smug as she teased, “Why are you looking at me? What’s the matter? Wasn’t my performance great? I think I have the potential to be an excellent actress.”
Levi chuckled softly, “It seems you’re very satisfied with how things are turning out, aren’t you?”
Earlier, Bella had used Levi’s power and influence to get that doctor to issue a fake pregnancy certificate for her. Of course, she had prepared everything just to stage this scene for Pearl and Max.
But contrary to Bella’s triumphant and cheerful demeanor, Levi’s face darkened. He glanced at Bella’s belly and asked, “Are you really pregnant?”
The question nearly made Bella choke on her food. She wiped her mouth with a napkin, bewildered, and stared at the man in front of her.
“What did you just ask? Of course, I’m—”
“How many months pregnant are you with my child?” Levi interrupted her bluntly.
Chapter Ninety-FourLevi's words once again left Bella stunned. She cleared her throat and said, "What nonsense are you talking about? Do you actually think I'm pregnant?"Levi remained silent, which surprised Bella. It wasn’t that he didn’t know her plan, yet he was asking such questions now. Of course, she wasn't pregnant, and she hadn't even gone for a full medical check-up. The pregnancy report was fake. This was all just an act to make those two scumbags turn on each other. Bella had assumed Levi, like her, understood this clearly.Bella lightly shook her head in denial, "Stop joking. Do you really think I could be pregnant? Who do you think the father would be? You or my husband?"Despite her words, if she were truly pregnant, the child in her womb could only belong to the man sitting in front of her, because she had never slept with her husband, so it was impossible for her to be pregnant with Max’s child.Levi didn’t say anything. He silently tapped his fingers on the dining t
Chapter Ninety-FiveHearing what Max said, Bella only gave a slight smile, but deep down, she felt an intense disdain for this man. She couldn't understand why she had once been so deeply in love with him, to the point where she believed that if she didn't marry him, she wouldn't want to marry anyone else. However, Bella still felt fortunate that she had discovered how disgusting this man truly was. More importantly, she and Max didn’t have any children together, which was one of the reasons why she didn't feel guilty for betraying her husband. When they arrived home, Max, still slightly intoxicated and in a good mood from two pieces of good news that evening, was feeling extremely relaxed. From behind, he watched Bella, admiring her beautiful figure. Even just looking at her back was enough to make others feel captivated. Max quickly stepped forward and embraced her from behind, greedily inhaling the sweet and seductive fragrance of his wife."Bella, you smell so good..." Max whisper
Chapter Ninety-SixSince the night Bella publicly revealed her pregnancy, Max had seemingly undergone a complete transformation. He no longer used the excuse of being busy with work to leave the house every evening as he used to.If Bella hadn’t known the true nature of her despicable and deceitful husband, she might have actually believed he cared for her. His appearance as a caring and model husband left Bella astonished.Bella suspected that something must have happened between Max and Pearl after that dinner, or else a woman like Pearl would never let Max off so easily."You haven't been busy with work every night like you used to lately. Things at your company must be going well?" Bella said casually, though she was probing into the relationship between Max and Pearl.Max heard her but didn't grasp her meaning, thinking only that his wife was showing concern for him. "That's right, I haven't been as busy lately. It's perfect timing, with you being pregnant, so I can stay home to
Chapter Ninety-SevenFearing that his wife might find out about his relationship with Pearl, Max quickly turned to explain to Bella."Bella, don't misunderstand. She seems to be drunk. I can smell the alcohol on her."Pearl heard Max's words and realized he hadn't come here alone, nor had he come to see her. At that moment, Pearl no longer wanted to hide anything. She had been in the shadows for too long and didn’t want to continue like this. But before Pearl could speak, Bella smiled gently and said, "It's okay. It seems your situation is getting worse, Pearl. So bad that you even hugging mistook my man."The faces of both Pearl and Max turned pale, especially Max, who was furious with Pearl for putting him in such an awkward situation.Pearl looked at Max, wanting him to say something, her eyes asking why Bella was here. But Pearl didn't wait for Max's response; she couldn’t hold back any longer."What are you doing here? Who allowed you to come to my house?" Pearl's eyes were fille
Chapter Ninety-EightMax stood outside the door as if standing in a furnace; he wanted to rush in, but Pearl had locked it from the inside, leaving him with no choice but to wait outside."...DIE!..."Max immediately recognized Pearl's scream. Horrified, he could no longer calmly wait and kicked the door forcefully. With the strength of a grown man, it only took three kicks to break down the locked door."Bella! Bella! Where are you?" Max frantically ran inside. He heard noises from the living room and rushed in.Before him was a horrifying and disgusting scene. Max quickly scanned the room and found Bella curled up on the floor, clutching her stomach and trembling uncontrollably. Pearl was holding a large shard of glass, which was smeared with some red liquid.Just by looking, Max knew what was happening. He staggered over to Bella."Bella? Bella? What's wrong? Bella, wake up. Blood?" Max held Bella in his arms, and when he touched her stomach, he felt a liquid flowing out. As soon a
Chapter Ninety-NineAfter Levi mentioned that her unfaithful husband had run off with his lover, Bella truly believed it, as it was a likely scenario. However, she couldn't allow them to cause such havoc and then escape so easily. What Bella didn't expect was that Max would return after two days of her hospitalization. He wanted to see her but was stopped by two bodyguards outside. Since Bella had been admitted, Levi had arranged for numerous bodyguards to be with her, with two stationed right at the door and others guarding the hallway.Hearing Max's voice, Bella merely smirked and said softly, "Let him in.""I'm afraid not, ma'am. Sir has given strict orders—" one of the bodyguards sternly replied.Bella waved her hand and said softly, "Then you stay here with me." After all, she wasn't sure what Max intended by coming here or if he would try to harm her. Although he wasn't directly responsible for her hospitalization, his hesitation had nearly cost her life.As soon as Max saw Bell
Chapter One HundredLevi did not respond but merely stared silently at Bella. He showed no expression, leaving Bella slightly confused, as she had expected him to mock or tease her."Alright, that guy thinks I've forgiven him because I still love him too much. Ridiculous. To think that after all this, that jerk still believes that makes me sick," Bella sighed, glancing at Levi.Levi squinted at her but remained silent. Just his gaze made Bella uncomfortable and confused. She sighed again and added, "Please don’t look at me like that. I’m not crazy enough to forgive that jerk, but there’s something I need to finish. I haven’t ended this yet.""So, when will this end?" Levi's tone hinted at impatience, not quite angry, but clearly, he didn’t want to continue this game with Bella anymore.Bella was somewhat perplexed by Levi's attitude. After all, their relationship had always been transactional. She had never mentioned a deadline, nor had he. So why was he irritated when she said she di
Chapter One Hundred and OneIf that night the image of the two women was drastically different, then now, it’s the same, only reversed. Bella, as a patient, was dressed in hospital clothes, her face pale and weak, while Pearl radiated beauty and nobility, pure and elegant.Since Pearl was standing with her back to Bella, Bella couldn’t see her expression. Aside from the sound of the wind, no one spoke, making the atmosphere between them strangely tense. Finally, Bella broke the silence. “So? You asked me to meet you up here on the rooftop, but you’re not saying anything?”Pearl stood by the rooftop railing, turning around to face Bella. She looked at Bella with a sneer.“Why are you standing so far away? Are you afraid I’ll do something to you? We’re best friends, aren’t we? Why are we so distant now?”Bella didn’t expect Pearl to say such words. If Pearl really considered them best friends, she would never have had an affair with Max and schemed to hurt her.“Of course, I’m afraid. I
Chapter One Hundred and NineIt took Bella several seconds to react. She frowned slightly and looked straight at the man in front of her."Hey, you’re—"“Mr. Karter, I didn’t expect you to visit my home at this hour. Since it was unannounced, I am genuinely surprised. Please forgive me for not being able to welcome you in the best way possible,” Mr. James, initially startled, quickly regained his composure and smiled warmly at the man.As soon as Mr. James finished speaking, Bella became even more surprised. Her father knew Levi? No, the fact that her father knew him wasn’t the issue; it was her father’s deferential attitude towards him that was.Bella knew Levi was influential in elite circles, but she had always treated him as an equal. She had never lowered herself before him, and Levi had never shown any issue with that. Yet, her father—an influential figure in the business world who had never bowed or tried to curry favor with anyone—was now acting so humble in front of Levi. Thi
Chapter One Hundred and EightBella was still thinking about the court case and didn’t realize there was someone else in her office."Mr. Martin, you should knock before entering," Bella said with a professional smile.Henry chuckled lightly. "I did knock; you just didn’t hear it. How’s work lately? Any difficulties?"Henry’s tone was gentle and friendly, but Bella found it a bit awkward. Ever since Henry returned to the country and took over the position of director, he often came to her office to chat. However, having not seen him for a long time, Bella still felt distant from the man in front of her."No issues. I’ll get used to it soon enough. What brings you here, Mr. Martin?" Bella asked, her tone clearly conveying a sense of distance from Henry."You don’t need to be so formal and serious with me. After all, we’re family…" Henry said lightly but hesitated when mentioning her divorce. "I heard you got divorced…"Bella’s divorce and her lawsuit against her ex-husband and his mist
Chapter One Hundred and SevenEveryone in the courtroom cast curious glances at Bella. They all knew this trial was initiated by a wife accusing her husband of infidelity and he had committed numerous despicable acts that harmed his father-in-law's company. Yet, the husband treated his ex-wife as a savior. No one could understand what miracle he was waiting for.Bella entrusted almost everything to her lawyer. Her lawyer was a renowned figure in the legal community—capable of turning even a murder charge into innocence. With such a skilled advocate and a solid case, Bella was confident of victory. As the trial commenced, Bella's lawyer presented all the evidence from the previous hearing, supplemented with even more detailed and compelling information. Every word he spoke left the courtroom stunned and buzzing with murmurs about Max. Max's already pale face grew even more ashen and lifeless, revealing his utter despair and helplessness.Max's lawyer could do nothing; the evidence was
Chapter One Hundred and SixAfter that meeting, Levi didn’t call or message her, which made Bella feel relieved. Bella never really knew what this man was thinking or what he would do next, so when he didn’t agree to her proposal, she felt a bit anxious."I thought he might do something… like harassment. I feel so lucky," Bella said as she sat in her new office, specifically the deputy director’s private office.Ever since Pearl was thrown into prison and Max was held in custody, the entire company was in chaos for days; no one could have expected that their director would be detained and soon face imprisonment.Bella brought one surprise after another because most people in the company didn’t know that she was the chairman’s daughter and the legal wife of Director Cooper. They only knew their director was married, but he had a rather ambiguous relationship with his personal secretary.Lauriel was particularly shocked. When she learned Bella’s true identity, her face turned pale, and
Chapter One Hundred and FiveIt wasn’t as if Bella just realized the difference between her and that man now; it was just that now she was truly serious about the matter. Bella didn’t spend too much time waiting for Levi—whenever she wanted to see him, all it took was a phone call, and he would always answer as if he were waiting just for her call. Before Levi arrived, Bella had thought of simply being straightforward and saying that their relationship was over; after all, she had never been polite with him. However, when Levi walked in, Bella felt anxious and flustered. Levi was always a strikingly handsome man, and wherever he appeared, he became the center of attention. Fortunately, the café wasn’t crowded now, and her table in the corner went largely unnoticed.“It’s rare for you to invite me out like this; you seem to be in a great mood,” Levi said, pulling out a chair to sit down. His smile was gentle and affectionate, yet his gaze seemed as if it wanted to devour her.Bella tri
Chapter One Hundred and FourThe next trial was also the trial of Max. Bella entrusted her lawyer to handle the case, including the divorce, as she felt she had fulfilled her obligations and wouldn’t have much time to concern herself with her ex-husband going forward. She also heard from her lawyer that her ex-husband had been shouting constantly in the holding cell, demanding to see her. He didn’t hesitate to play the pitiful card to try to earn sympathy from those around him.The thing that amused Bella most was that he kept claiming he loved her, blaming her for not letting him touch her and for her illness that prevented her from conceiving. He argued that he was forced to find another woman to bear him a child to “save” their marriage. According to him, he cheated only to preserve their marriage.Bella felt amused, unable to comprehend how he could be so shameless and oblivious to the wrongness of his actions. Even setting aside the infidelity, his plan to take over her father's
Chapter One Hundred and ThreeThe more Max struggled, the more the two officers tightened their hold, causing him both pain and frustration."Are you people insane? Do you even know who you’re arresting? Let go of me!” Max shouted, turning to Bella, “Bella, help me, please. Don’t just stand there watching!”Bella, who had just been feigning weakness and sadness over her “best friend” going to prison, now looked at Max with utter indifference, her gaze filled with sarcasm and disdain."What are you talking about, darling husband? If I helped you, wouldn’t that make me an obstruction to law enforcement?"Max looked at Bella, bewildered. “What?”Seeing Max’s confusion, Bella had no patience to explain further. She raised her voice to address everyone present. “Ladies and gentlemen, honorable court, I am truly grateful that you all remain here so we may proceed with the next hearing immediately.”Bella glanced at Pearl, then at Max. “Yes, Max. You are indeed the next one after your little
Chapter One Hundred and TwoThe news of Pearl being arrested by the police on charges of extortion quickly reached Max. Max had no time to rest, as he frantically tried to handle and destroy incriminating documents. However, documents accumulated over many years were not so easy to dispose of.As Max struggled to deal with the mess, he continuously cursed Pearl, calling her a foolish woman. "If she wants to die, she should do it on her own! What a stupid woman."Now, Max finds himself in a situation where he doesn't know what to do. He couldn't understand how ignorant Pearl had been in resorting to blackmailing Bella and then getting arrested by the police. Wouldn't it have been better if she had just disappeared from here?Although Pearl wasn't a famous or influential figure, those who had business dealings with Max were aware of the ambiguous relationship between the two. These partners also knew of Max's plan to take over the company; in fact, they had been secretly supporting him.
