CHAPTER ONE

"Damn it!" Rella Cortés  swore for what seemed like the hundredth time in just an hour. She was picking up Cindy's bad language without her realising.

The whole engagement party was driving her insane. She was never a fan of such pump parties but it was two days before her other half Cindy's wedding and Rella was expected to be there, not only that but she found herself in such a situation she could've avoided. Her hands shook, her stomach was in knots and she was breaking out in cold sweat. She was never a mastermind in anything much less deception and lying always made her want to haul her guts out.

She took deep calming breaths, inhaling and exhaling afraid she might start to hyperventilate.

Calm down Rella, it's only for tonight nobody has to know. She assured herself.

After she was calm enough, Rella sighed.

"Rella how did you get into this mess again? Oh yes because you can't say no to Cindy that's why. You're such an idiot you know that?" In a tone that was half-chiding and half-miserable, she addressed her reflection on the mirror in the washroom of her family's restaurant, Gourmet Cortés.

She reached down unto the marble counter top and retrieved the lipstick that had slipped out of her hand. Right now, she's in Cindy's shimmering blue dress and sparkling diamonds, her makeup was as identical as it could be and if she didn't know herself better, she would've fallen for her own sham and believed she was Cindy. Why did she have to fall for Cindy's theatrics over and over again? All it took was a little of her signature water works and Rella gave in.

After all that's happened in their earlier years right from grade school to high school you'd think Rella would’ve learnt her lesson by now but she was still as feeble minded, a big softie when it came to her twin.

The dress was too fitting, and its plunging neckline left nothing to be imagined.

It was outrageous!

It outlined every supple curve down to the tiniest detail—curves Rella had no idea were there until this moment and she would never be caught dead dressed in such slutty outfit.

Except she wasn't Rella right now but Cindy.

She had never devoted such attention to herself before, not even the society had anything to say about her because Cindy had always been in the spotlight and well she, Rella always faded away into the background and she didn't mind that at all for she hated the attention.

Rella made some final touches to her makeup, her golden tresses which would've been straighter if she was herself right now were a tumbling wave of curls around her shoulders just like Cindy's.

An hour ago the party had been in full swing.

Her mom had called it an intimate dinner with family and a few friends but apparently a few friends meant the entire Manhattan high society. Of course that hadn't surprised Rella, it wouldn't be the first time Evie Cortés had gone overboard when it came to her parties. Only thing missing was the media. Even though there were a handful of them camping outside the restaurant hoping to get first scoop on what was termed engagement of the year seeing as Cindy was the media's darling and Stefan Diamond was their heartthrob.

She grabbed Cindy's dark clutch from the dresser and made for the door.

Cindy had lasted a good thirty minutes at the party after which she disappeared. Evie Cortés had been so restless she had to ask Rella to bring her sister back to the party before she does anything crazy and Rella had found Cindy tearing out of the restaurant like she had a swarm of bees chasing her.

"Please don't tell anyone Rella." Her twin had implored.

"What are you up to now huh?"

Rella had expected an explanation but instead she only got a promise. For one, Cindy had been nervous as hell and Rella was tempted to press further but before she got another word out Cindy said, "Rose needs me right now. Her water broke.’’

“So call her husband or boyfriend!’’

‘’She doesn’t have a husband or boyfriend and her family disowned her.’’

‘’Cindy, no woman in her right mind would leave her own engagement party after being here a few minutes. What about the party?"

"Well about that, I'll need you to do me a favour." And she quickly rattled off the idea.

"No. You have got to be kidding." Rella shock her head in stern disapproval.

"Please Rella you're the only one I trust to help me with this."

"Absolutely not.  I will not be dragged into your affairs especially when I know it's bound to be a disaster. Why don't you give me her address and I'll go and assist her instead." Rella suggested.

"No!" Cindy's protest came a bit strong it surprised Rella. "It'll only be for a few hours I promise I'll be back before the end of the party."

"How can I pretend to be you at your own party this is absurd."

"No it's not, you've done it so many times before." Cindy pointed.

"That was different you were not getting married in two days!"

Things hadn't turned out the way Rella had imagined and she caved in.

       "I sure hope I don't regret this."

She was regretting it the moment she stepped out of the washroom. Rella couldn't help but think of all the guests out there and her thoughts inadvertently revert to Cindy’s fiancé—Stefan Diamond—the CEO of the vast Diamond hotels and resort empire.

Rella felt an involuntary shiver run down her spine at the thought of him.

He was as intimidating as he was sophisticated with an air of enigma around him. No man had ever made her as flustered as she was each time he was close or when she thought of him.

But one thing she's clear about is the fact that she did not like him.

Rella had met him three weeks ago and had learned about the proposal. She had been reeling from the aftermath of her break up with Ryan but Stefan had come as a shock to her.  Cindy was rebellious and impulsive while Rella seemed so reserved at some point she had been dubbed a wallflower. It was no surprise at all that Cindy would get a match like Stefan Diamond and there was no doubt at all that the two were smitten with each other Cindy had all but purred like a slick kitten when she told Rella, "he's so hot I feel like I'm going to die whenever I look at him!" Then she had dramatically fanned herself.

Rella had been wary of him right from the very first day, there was something about him she couldn't quite put her finger on but she knew he was dangerous— not like  a serial killer or anything of the sort— he just seemed to discomfit her every time.  He was sinfully gorgeous, she would give him that. With his aristocratic face; his firmly set jaw, his cobalt blue eyes that were cold and calculating always having a certain glint of mischief in them. He was intimidating enough without having to throw in his massive built and broad shoulders which only made her dislike him even more. All of these features cemented her belief that Stefan Diamond was every bit the arrogant, too-rich-i-can-get-whatever-i-want just like the rest of the Manhattan billionaire playboys she detested. And she could not believe he was getting married to her sister.

While Rella could never measure up to her twin's air of cool sophistication, she was more than content with being only in the background. Even when they were still teenagers, Cindy easily outshone her and she had been the shy little Rella.

She scanned the crowd for Stefan and only felt her nerves flaring uncontrollably. What if he realises she wasn't Cindy? And what if she messes up everything? The questions only made bile rise up from the pit of her stomach to her throat before she swallowed nervously and tried furtively to calm her exploding nerves.

Rella relaxed a bit when she saw no sign of Stefan and decided warily that she needed some fresh air. She wobbled uneasily as she threw the French doors open and let out a whoosh of breath. At least she would have time to gain her composure back before she face him she told herself. She had just closed her eyes and was beginning to enjoy the feel of the balmy air on her skin when he spoke, "I thought I may have to call the cops to make you come to your own party." Rella stuck one foot against the other and she found herself losing her balance. She flung out her arms in a desperate attempt to keep herself from falling. Her ankle had twisted in a wrong angle.

Large pair of arms caught her at the last minute, wounding around her protectively.

"Are you okay? Are you hurt?"

Rella almost couldn't move and speech had evaded her and it's not because she was hurt but the thought of Stefan Diamond wrapping her in his embrace was more than she had bargained for, he had caught her off guard. She’d never expected him to be on the balcony of all places.

She shook her head slightly regaining her senses. "Ah, er, I...I am fine." She stuttered a response but he stared at her sceptically. Rella cursed herself silently, why was she stuttering? Cindy would never stutter especially in a situation such as this. "Really? It didn't seem that way." She could swear she saw a smirk but she was too displeased at her humiliating slip to care. CHAPTER THREE Rella's world hadn't stopped spinning for a second since her mom broke the news about Cindy. She stood rigid in the living room with her parents unable to process what just happened. Evie Cortés was hysterical and Robert Cortés was irreparably trying to calm her down. "What was she thinking? What about Stefan, and the society? She just threw away a good life! What would happen to us now?"Rella was stewing away in her guilt and confusion. How could she have overlooked something so crucial? "How can you not know anything Rella she tells you everything?" "Mom I swear I don't know anything." The only thing she knew was that Cindy had lied to her because Rose was never in labour. So where could she be? "Instead of passing the blame on each other what we should be doing is finding a solution to this mess." Her dad put in. The silence that ensued after that was a deafening one and every angle Rella seemed to have delved in from her mem

Stefan adjusted his tie in front of the dressing mirror and gave himself a fleeting once-over, his eye caught his grandfather's in the mirror, he sighed internaly before he turned to face the old man. Gregory Diamond was a hard man to please and his words were carved in stone that no one dares to refuse him. He was a business man who knew what he wanted and how to get it. In a way Stefan inherited some of that hard veneer although he would not like to admit it. "You look handsome." His grandfather commented. "Your parents would be proud." Stefan scoffed. "I doubt it." "You will thank me later. I am only doing this for your own good." "No you're doing this to satisfy your own ego cause you want no one to be able to say no to you." Stefan countered. "Blackmailing me with the inheritance left to me by my parents isn't for my own good you simply want to control me." He argued. His grandfather smiled, the laugh lines at the corner of his eyes became prominent.

"Darling, are you alright do you feel ill?" Rella snapped out of her thoughts at the feel of Stefan's warm calloused hand on hers, she furrowed her brows in confusion as to why he would use such an endearment for her but one look around told her why; Mr. And Mrs Stephenson were staring at her with concern waiting for her response. Her palm was sweaty where he held her hand and Rella had no choice but to continue this charade. Stefan had a sacharin sweet smile on his face, almost like he was enjoying her mistery and Rella wanted to punch him so bad. She took in a deep breath and regretted because she almost felt sick to her stomach. Oh God he was now her husband, and now what? "I'm fine." She said finally mustering her own sweet smile. Mrs. Stephenson looked relieved. "It's not me is it? I didn't do anything to upset you did I?" Stefan asked and Rella wished he'd stop talking. She laughed uneasily. "No I'm just so overwhelmed with all of these." She repli

"Is he always so unbearable?"Rella turned to face the middle aged man named Henry but he didn't seem fazed by Stefan's attitude instead he smiled at her politely and said, "Hello Madam I am Henry the butler, I will be helping you with anything you need you just have to let me know what. For now let me help you settle in for the night." Rella smiled back at him grateful that someone was at least nice to her in her new home. "Nice to meet you Henry, I'm Rella and thank you so much." Stefan didn't even bother to show her to their bedroom. If they were going to be sharing a room the least he could do is be more accommodating but he was arrogant and condescending. "This way please." She followed the butler up the flight of stairs, her eyes roaming the spacious mansion in awe she couldn't savour the beauty of it because she needed to keep up with Henry. At the second floor just across the hall he opened brown oak door and ushered her in. Rella felt like she

"Look at you living the life of a queen." "Mom why are you here?" Rella didn't think she'd have to meet either of her parents so soon after the wedding but Evie Cortés couldn't take a hint and showed up at her doorstep two days after, much to Rella's displeasure. "You ought to thank me you know I came up with this brilliant plan." Her mom said with a sassy swirl of her hand feeling rather proud of herself for being responsible for her daughter's misery but making sure to drop her voice into a whisper so no one would hear her. They were sitting in the patio of Rella's new home where Henry the butler made sure they had snacks and the right wine to go with it. Rella inhaled deeply and exhaled trying to calm her temper. Evie Cortés, no matter how unbearable and insufferable was still her mother after all. "Did you find Cindy yet?" It was all she was eager to know. "Sadly no, it's like she fell off the face of the earth or something." "If yo

"Nothing is working out."Rella groaned in frustration sipping her wine. It was a bright afternoon and the sun was just the right amount of warm but nothing about Rella's mood was sunny. There were barely days left for the post wedding party and she was overwhelmed. There was the meal, it's hard to choose an appetizer and the main course, for dessert she decided on chocolate troufle. The guest list was incomplete as she had little to no clue on who to invite and Stefan had made it clear that he was having no part in it. "Relax I am here aren't I and I promise to help you." Van assured her. They were on the balcony overlooking the neatly trimmed garden. " I have done a little get together before so this shouldn't be hard." " No offense Van but a get-together in a little neighbourhood with friends is nothing compared to this. Guests from some of the most affluent families in the city will be attending and we can't just serve them barbecue and call it a day."

"You know something." "It is not my place to talk about it." "You never should've insinuated more in the first place."Rella insisted and he caved. Christian sighed." You're a bully you know that? "Rella simply smiled. "To cut the long story short, Stefan's grandfather forced him to get married to a woman of his choosing. It was either marry you or forfeit the inheritance his parents left him." "That's awful. Couldn't he have just said no? " " Couldn't you have just said no? " Fair point Rella thought. All this time she thought Stefan had been the one to blackmail her parents turns out it was his grandfather. But that was no excuse for him to treat her so cruelly considering how she also has no choice. "Why did you agree to the marriage though? Stefan was counting on the fact that since you were sort of frivolous and fiercely independent that you would refuse to marry him but like every other woman he's met you couldn't refuse his

Walking down the aisle towards the man of her dreams had always been Rella's dream. Yes she was a hopeless romantic and right now her focus was on the man at the altar. There was just him, everyone else seemed to fade away and when he smiled up at her there was no doubt in her heart it was all for her. No more pretense, no more lies, no more deceit, she wasn't walking down the aisle towards someone else's fiancé in someone else's dress no, she was walking down the aisle towards the love of her life who sees the real her in her own gorgeous wedding dress. Stefan was impatient for the ceremony to end not because he wanted to get it over and done with like the last time but because he couldn't wait to have her all to himself. Never in a million years had he ever thought that he might end up madly in love with anyone to the point that he couldn't start a day without her infectious smile and he couldn't end his day without tasting her lucious lips. Because that's what the ring is meant for, his grandmother's ring given to her by his grandfather before they got married which has been passed down the family for many generations now. Stefan walked past the old Butler and made for the stairs holding on to the possibility that she might've come home without Henry's knowledge. He pushed open their bedroom door calling out her name once more but there was no answer. He threw open the closet to find everything intact; no item was out of place. She'd taken nothing with her. Stefan staggered back, it was all he could do to avoid breaking down completely. Rella's world had slowed down in that moment when she saw Stefan's horror mirroring her own, when she realised that they were both thinking the same thing. Everything that happened after that was a blur. She heard him yelling to someone to bring the car around and then he was lifting her up. The ride to the hospital took a lifetime. "I'm sorry but your wife's had a miscarriage…"They were too late and now the doctor is saying she's lost her baby. She tuned out the doctor's words after that first damning sentence. Everything was spinning and she couldn't breathe. Rella started sobbing while Stefan turned and left the room–he probably couldn't wait to get away from her. The doctor was still talking to her but Rella had since tuned her out, her voice getting drowned by the silence in her head–normally there'll be a roaring–but there was utter silence that Rella was afraid she wasn't in her skin anymore.Rella was oblivious to when the doctor left the room and Van was there w

Van hated hospitals. Especially when it reminded her of her dad's condition, and how much he suffered before his passing. Hospitals are filled with gloom and despair. People die in hospitals and she couldn't shake up the thought that Jake might die just like her father. No, she had to believe that nothing would happen to Jake, that he wouldn’t share the same fate as her father because she didn't think she had it in her to survive another tragedy. Jake’s friends; Christian, Dave and Max, were all there including Rella her best friend and her husband Stefan Diamond who's also Jake's friend. They'd arrived a few hours ago and were as worried and afraid as she was but they were trying to make her feel better instead. She felt giddy with his courting, like she had the first time he asked her out. Van pressed the phone against her ear and smiled a good natured smile like she never had in a while. Her heart almost on the verge of exploding with joy and happiness and everything that was good. "Look out the balcony, I have a surprise for you."
