I kept a close eye on her as she slowly removed the contents of the envelope with trembling fingers.

With every second that went by it seemed as though the weight of whatever was inside this envelope was pressing down on the room. The sight of it made Ava's face go white. Her breathing became labored and her eyes grew wide.

"Divorce papers."She said in a whisper as though she was having trouble believing what she was reading.

The shock was like a kick to the stomach. I was surprised by this. I had no idea how to console her or what to say. Despite the fact that we had both been taken by surprise I felt sorry for her.

Her brows furrowed as she absorbed the details of the papers which she read silently. She was clearly having trouble processing the words but with each line the bewilderment in her eyes grew.

"A divorce Contract. They have come to an agreement. Ava Williams. (Hereinafter referred to as Wife) and Liam Harris. (Hereinafter referred to as husband)The dissolution of their ma

I walked next to Alex, my eyes still swollen from the tears I had just shed. I had a hunch to trust him, afterall he had been so kind to me.We got to my door and I glanced up at him. "I'll give my private investigator a call as soon as I can." he said in a soothing calm voice. "We'll know Liam's identity. Well investigate this."Thankful for his resolve I nodded. I said in a whisper "Thank you Alex." "Ava, everything will work out. Discovering the truth about your divorce is one step closer to what actually transpired." He said, giving my hand a light squeeze. His words caused a tiny flicker of relief as if the burden on my chest had been lifted. Perhaps I wasn't as isolated as I believed. Perhaps there was hope after all."I'm not going to cry anymore." I told him with a feeling of resolve. "Enough cryin for me. Alex you've been a huge help to me. I mean emotionally and in other ways too."He gave a slight smile and nodded as though he comprehended. "Alright. Look after yourself Av

I scurried out of bed and rushed to the bathroom. It was impossible to breathe or think clearly because of the severe nausea.I barely made it to the bathroom before I heaved my stomach emptying and a sour taste filling my mouth. In a desperate attempt to regain control of my body I braced myself against the cold porcelain as the dizziness swirled around me.After some time I flushed the toilet making a noise that was nearly too loud for the room's silence. I splashed some water on my face and looked up at the mirror to see my pale reflection.Stress and exhaustion had become her constant companions leaving my face pallid and my eyes bloodshot and exhausted. I had no idea how the pregnancy would manifest itself, the nausea, lightheadedness and unexpected flashbacks.I was unable to distinguish between what was real and what was merely a figment of my imagination as if I were living in a fog and rambling from one moment to the next. I closed my eyes as the slightest pressure as though

I sat at the side of my bed, and the soft glow from the bedside lamp cast long shadows across the room. My hands trembled as I grasped the envelope from next to me on my bedside table—divorce papers. The very presence of them knotted my stomach. That experience stayed with me, raw and fresh, like a fresh wound. Liam's callous, matter-of-fact statement kept echoing in my mind."I'm done, Ava."I took a quick breath, trying to shake off the weight of what had transpired. But it was impossible. How had it come to pass from being inseparable to now? How had the man who had held me like I was everything to him ended up someone who had no interest in me or our son?I had a lump in my throat as I ran my fingers over the sealed envelope. Ever since he had left them in my hands, I had avoided looking at the papers, hoping against hope that by ignoring them, reality would be different. Now, however, part of me ached for answers—answers that I had been afraid to seek out before.I took a nervous

There was a soft knock at the door, firm and insistent, and I knew it was Alexander even before I forced myself out from under the blankets. My body felt like it weighed a ton, and my heart weighed even heavier, but I forced myself to move. I lurched across the room, pausing for a split second with fingers poised on the doorknob before twisting it open.He stood there, dressed in a button-down and dark-washed jeans, his expression blank. His sharp eyes flicked over me, scanning my face before shifting past me into the dimly lit room."May I come in?" His voice was soft, carrying a quiet authority.I nodded and stepped aside, letting him in. He entered slowly, his gaze flicking around the room before settling back on me. Avoiding his eyes, I turned and sat on the edge of the bed, gripping my hands tightly in my lap.Silence stretched between us. I could feel his gaze on me, studying me. Then, after what felt like an eternity, he finally spoke."Ava, have you been crying?" His voice was

  • The Stand In Wife's Revenge    Her Memories

The door of Avas room clicked shut behind me as I left. I stood in the hall for a while lost in contemplation as I gazed at the shiny wood floor. Her brittle face and the way she had gazed at those divorce documents as though they contained the secret to her past were all replayed in my mind. Her goal was to recall. Her memory loss was something I had anticipated but witnessing it firsthand was unique. The atmosphere was eerie. The woman who had once exuded unquestionable confidence now appeared lost as though she didnt feel comfortable in her own skin. After slowly letting out my breath and running a hand through my hair I went to my room. I closed the door after entering and leaned against it for a moment before moving away. The bedside lamps warm glow cast long shadows throughout the dimly lit room. I approached the desk drew out the chair and took a seat staring at the laptop in front of me without saying anything. sinclair Ava. In the most surprising way she had entered my life a

The hospital smelled of quiet despair and antiseptic. Time stood still there and hope hovered like a ghost in the atmosphere never quite present but refusing to go. My chest never felt any lighter despite the fact that I had been here far too often.I passed nurses who hardly gave me a look as I moved down the hallway. By now they were familiar with me. The man who came to room 407 was always by himself and never spoke. When I got to the door I slowed my pace. Before pushing it open I paused for a brief second.Only the faint glow of the machines that kept her alive illuminated the dim interior of the room. The only sign that time was still passing was the heart monitors steady beeping. The white hospital sheets contrasted with Fionas pale skin as she lay there still. Like the last time I saw her her dark hair framed her face. The woman I had loved for so long was still gorgeous. However she wasnt present. Actually no. I moved closer after swallowing against the lump in my throat. I m

I held Fionas cold hand and wouldnt let go. Silent tears ran down my face pressing my forehead against our joined fingers. I had waited for a response that never materialized for countless nights here speaking into nothing. But the weight of it all was too much to bear tonight. I trembled as I whispered "I miss you." The silence in the room was too great. The monitors steady beep served as a harsh reminder that she was only just barely alive. Not in this place. Not really gone. I was startled back to the present by a loud knock on the door. Quickly wiping my face I pushed the sadness deep inside out of sight. As I straightened my jaw tensed training my features to resemble control. When the door opened a person who was familiar entered. There was silence inside the mansion. Its too silent. My bare feet sank into the cool marble as I entered the hallway. The quiet was dense and engulfing pressing against my ears. The floor of the bedroom was streaked with gold as the morning light came in through the curtains. However warmth did nothing to relieve the cold burden on my chest. The agonizing relics of the nightmare continued to replay in my head. The tears of Ava. the shot. the blood. With a sharp exhale I wiped my face. My head ached and a dull lingering migraine was developing behind my eyes. The visions that wouldnt go away had robbed the sleep. Air was what I needed. After hauling myself from bed I put on a shirt and went into the hallway. I felt the mansions eerie stillness as it encircled me in silence. Too little noise was made. Until—. the slight rumbling of motion. Before I could think my feet dragged me to the kitchen. The air smelled of something savory and fresh herbs as I got closer. Softly the rhythmic sound of a knife striking a cutting board reverberated.I stopped as I rounded a corner. Standing at the kitchen counter Ava chopped tomatoes with a practiced ease her dark hair loo

The darkness encircled me oppressive and dense. The sheets coiled around my body like shackles and the bed beneath me felt far away but I was immobile. I was confined. A sharp sound faint at first but getting louder reverberated in my mind.Let it drip.Pour. Let it drip. I was standing in a long deserted hospital hallway when my eyes opened—inside the dream. The white sterile walls extended indefinitely on either side and the harsh fluorescent lights flickered overhead. A chill ran down my spine as the chilly air pressed against my skin. Something metallic hung beneath the familiar antiseptic smell that filled my lungs. Blood. The steady rhythmic sound of dripping water grew louder hammering at my skull. Water was absent though.Only silence was heard. Then—action. A door at the far end of the hallway creaked open. My throat tightened with breath. Fiona. She entered the gloomy light radiant and complete. Her delicate features were unaffected by illness and her dark hair fell in ge

The sound of my phone buzzing sharply cut through the quiet of my room and vibrated against the bed. I wrapped a towel around my waist and exited the restroom steam curling behind me. I strode over to pick up the device dripping water from my hair onto my bare shoulders.A name appeared on the screen. Cole. my personal investigator. Quietly I hoped he had some good news. However I had a feeling that whatever he was going to say would be beneficial. I responded right away. "You have something tell me?"Coles tone was tinged with the satisfaction of a job well done and his voice was clear. "I have a lot more than that. I am in possession of everything." My heartbeat intensified. "Proceed." "Liam —where he goes what he does and who he hangs out with. He is constantly being watched."A slow smile pulled at my lip corner. "And?" As soon as Alexander was gone I fell onto my bed and buried my face in my hands. My lips—God my lips still tingled from his kiss—my breath was still erratic and my heart was still pounding. I was embarrassed. However I was unable to ignore the reality at the same moment. I had given him a kiss. Furthermore I had desired it. I didnt fully understand the part of me that had yearned for a mans touch. I let him consume me and melted into him forgetting everything else for those fleeting moments. With a moan I leaned back against the headboard and pressed my fingers to my temples. Why in the world was I acting this way? I ought not to have permitted that to occur. The instant he leaned in and his lips touched mine I should have shoved him away. However I hadnt. He got what he wanted—no we both got what I had stood there and let him have.I traced the area where his mouth had been with my fingers to my lips. I could almost feel him there lingering and asserting. His hands holding me as tho

I moved slowly deliberately and unsteadily down the dark hallway. My body was still burning from Avas ghost touch and my mind was still spinning. How in the hell had I become affected? I was out of control. Totally. I was always in charge of my behavior feelings and impulses. I had yelled however as soon as I saw her standing there staring at me with those wide unsure eyes.I felt like something had broken inside of me when she gasped and her lips opened just a little in shock. I then gave her a kiss. It wasnt just a kiss. I gobbled her up. I got to my door and combed my hair in frustration. Before pushing the door open and slamming it behind me my fingers balled into a fist.Though the sound reverberated throughout the room it was insufficient to block out my thoughts. With a groan I leaned against the door and closed my eyes. I had to stop thinking about her. My body responded before my mind could and I tightened my fingers around her waist as I drew her closer. She was so cozy and close and I could smell her scent all over me. Next with Gods help I gave her a kiss. The world outside the room vanished as soon as our lips met. Her lips parted slightly when I applied pressure and they were softer and warmer than I had anticipated. Her subtle enticing flavor spread like wildfire throughout my body. Instinctively I moved to intensify the kiss while holding her against me with my hands sliding up her back. She remained motionless. I stood outside Ava’s door my hand hovering just inches from the wood. The only source of illumination in the dim hallway came from the antique wall sconces. The fast thud of my heart was accentuated by the oppressive silence that enveloped me. I couldnt tell how long I had been standing here but my fingers wouldnt move wouldnt shut the door and wouldnt knock. I should leave. I should turn around and go back to my room. But I couldn’t. She had been harmed by me. And that guilt clung to me like a second skin. I clenched my jaw and exhaled slowly trying to steady my nerves. Apologies had never come easy for me.Owning up to my mistakes had never been my strong suit. But tonight I had crossed a line I shouldn’t have. Tonight I had made Ava feel like an intruder in a house where she had no choice but to stay. With a sharp inhale I finally forced my knuckles against the door. I was consumed by the anger before I could control it because it had come so abruptly and with such violence. With my heart hammering my ribs I turned abruptly. Alexanders dark unreadable face stood by the open doorway. His clenched jaw narrowed eyes and the way his hands curled into fists at his sides were all highlighted by the golden glow from the chandelier. He was like this for the first time."You didnt answer me" he said in a low menacing voice. "Whats your purpose here?" With my throat dry I swallowed. "I—I just—"The necklace on the floor caught his attention. His movements moved too quickly. He walked across the room knelt and picked up the dropped necklace in a matter of seconds. Holding it like a treasure his forearm muscles flexed as his fingers curled tightly around it.
