Torture

I screamed as one by one, my fingernails were torn from their beds with a pair of pliers. I screamed as red hot nails were driven through the soles of my feet. I screamed as the Alpha carved away little strips of my skin with a knife and inch at a time.

Eventually, the shock my body was experiencing grew too much, and I willingly succumbed to unconsciousness. I hoped to hide there in the warm nothingness, safe and unaware of the horrors that reality held, but reality wasn’t done with me.

My heart leaped and took off like a startled rabbit, sending my back arching up off the table. Every muscle strained against the straps that bound me, but to no avail. This place was designed to hold werewolves. There was no escape.

“I wasn’t done with you, Little Silver. You can’t sleep now, not when we’re just getting to the good part.” He held a syringe up where I could see it. “Adrenaline works wonders on the fight or flight response I’ve discovered.”

I whimpered, a huge wave of despair and terror sweeping over me. I had to get out. I had to get free.

A new scream rose from deep in my throat, riding the surging tide of a shift. First one shoulder, then the other swiveled and popped, sending more pain shooting through me. Wolves were not meant to be bound as a human might. Everything was in the wrong place. The panic brought on by these thoughts spurred the shift onward. My back arched off the table, ribcage crunching into a lupine shape. I couldn’t stop it. They were all going to die because of me. Tears began to pour from my eyes, blurring the world as colors shifted and shadows receded.

"Hush, Little One." Silver’s voice wrapped around my consciousness with a brush of soft fur. Fur that soothed the terror and dulled the pain. "I have you."

Perception shifted until it looked like I was viewing the world from a distance. I tried to move, but my body wouldn’t obey my commands.

"You just rest. All will be well." Little by little, my body fought back the change. No. Silver fought back the change. She kept us human. She kept the others safe.

She kept me sane.

Each and every time I was dragged to the dungeon to be tortured over the next four years, Silver would pull me back from the brink of a shift and keep our secret safe. As time went on, I lasted longer and longer on the torture table. My increasing tolerance for pain frustrating Alpha Greyson more and more. The remaining five of us held on for those four years. We endured the torture, the physical abuse, the verbal abuse, the psychological trauma. We tended each other’s wounds, whispered words of encouragement in the dark basement. We saw firsthand what would happen to us when we turned sixteen and had our first heat.

Lyra had been acting weird all day. She squirmed a lot and was flush in her cheeks like she had a fever but she wouldn't tell us what was going on. Finally at the end of the day when we were safely locked in the basement she confessed in a terrified whisper.

"I'm in heat. That means I'm… I'm fertile. For the next week I can get pregnant. The worst part is that my body really, really wants it. If I'm not careful they might smell me." She shot a panicked glance up at the door and scooted closer, whispering even quieter. "Neither of you were here the last time one of us went into heat, but it wasn't pretty. The Beta's mate can't conceive so the Alpha let's him fuck any of us in heat in hopes of a child. The last few times…" Lyra paused chewing on her lip then shook her head. "Neither the girl nor the baby survived. I don't want to be next."

After that, we did anything we could think of to disguise Lyra's scent. We crushed dandelion leaves and rubbed them on all of us whenever we did yard work. We coated ourselves in even more dirt to clog her pores. We stayed as close to her as possible so our scents overlapped with hers. This worked for five days and we thought that we could make it to seven.

But the hope that had bloomed in our chests withered when the Beta came stomping down the stairs with a hungry grin.

"I'm going to enjoy turning your body against you and fucking that tight virgin pussy full of cum until you bare my pup." He murmured in her ear and pushed his hand down her threadbare sweatpants.Lyra's eyes popped wide open and she began to squirm again, this time trying to press her thighs together. The Beta only pushed her legs apart with his knee and did something with his hand that made her squeak."There you go." He said. "Don't that feel good?"Lyra whimpered, biting her lip, the scent of her unwilling arousal starting to fill the basement. When she started to twitch the Beta stopped whatever it was he was doing only to angle his wrist making Lyra gasp and arch her back. A low

I awoke from my dream memory again, silent tears streaming down my face and sniffled. It had been one year since that day, one year of waking each night after the same dream, one year of reliving Rain and Lyra's death nightly. Lyra's blue eyes bored into my own as they began to cloud over.I rose from my nest of rags and cardboard shivering in the cold air. I hated this place, and I hated them.I slammed my fist into the wall and waited, both for my captors and for my knuckles to mend now that I'd broken them, again, punching cement. They'd be down soon to fetch me up to make breakfast. Their personal slave. The only one left.I heard the rattle of the key in the lock and light flooded into my "room." There were no windows down here. No warmth or comfort. Just the same old rusty pipes and bare cement walls. It had been easier when the other captive children were still here. We had huddled together during the freezing winters and held each other when we cried. But they were all gone now

I turned slowly, fully expecting to be hit. Instead, my jaw dropped open. There was no swinging fist, no angry glare, Logan wasn't even facing me. He stood in front of the stove with his head cocked to one side and tongue sticking out of his mouth as he poked at the eggs expiramentally. It was so unexpected that I let out a tiny hysterical giggle, then immediately slapped a hand over my mouth, shrinking when he looked my way."You have a cute giggle." Was all he said before turning back to the eggs. Then, a moment later, "Hey, are these done?"Hesitantly, I stepped forward to where I could see the contents of the giant cast iron pan. It looked… perfect. The eggs were lightly browned in places, the onions were translucent, and the cheese was a beautiful gooey mess around chunks of meat and tomato. It smelled heavenly."Yes, sir." I squeaked."Just Logan. Here, you plate, and I'll start setting the table." He was still smiling as he handed the spatula back to me. Confusion swirled throu

Through the wall, I could hear congratulatory remarks and joyous welcomes seemingly directed at Logan. From what I could hear, it sounded like Logan had just gotten home from a boarding school for young alphas or anyone who tested dominant enough to get in. This made him a bit older than I had initially thought, closer to 18 than 15.He had learned everything he needed to know there and now was home to train under his father to take the mantle of Alpha when the time came. The laughter from the dining room sent a sudden pang of homesickness through me like a hunter's arrow. I missed those happy meals with my family when things were simple, when I was innocent and unhurt.Suppressing a forlorn sigh, I finished scrubbing the last pan and left the kitchen to start collecting the dirty laundry hampers from everyone's rooms. The rest of the day was oddly uneventful. No one tripped me or pushed me down the stairs. No one yelled at me or called me names. It got to the point where my anxiety k

  • The Silverwolf   Compromise

After that first trip to the infirmary, Logan kept a much closer eye on me. Any time someone tried to hurt me, he stepped in like my own personal guardian angel. There were still occasions when he was kept busy, but on those occasions, he would always help me to the medical building where Skye would patch me up and send me on my way.It was during one of these visits that I discovered why Logan trusted Skye around me without any protective or jealous tendencies. Skye had no interest in women, and that made him safe for me to be around."I don't have to worry about him pulling anything or trying to take you away from me." Logan had explained sending butterflies fluttering in my stomach. "You're too special for me to share."Sadly, the newfound protection was cut short when the Alpha caught on and began to actively separate us. While still infrequent, the beatings got more severe, and I was left to crawl to the medical building on my own, leaving a trail of blood."Dear God!" Skye hastil

I paused in dinner preparations for a moment, a tear trickling down my cheek as I thought back to how Logan had been when we first met. Before he got pushy about us mating and demanding of sex. Had it only been a few months ago?At first, I had been all for us mating. I loved him with my whole being. I wanted us to be together, always. Again and again, we would stand under the full moon trying to bind our souls."Soul by blood and flesh and bone. Here in your heart, my spirit is home. My strength is yours, thine will is my own. I'll be beside you wherever you roam." We spoke the words in unison while gazing into each other's eyes, and a warmth would begin to spread outward from my heart. The mating bond would start to form then as we stood breathing in sync. This completed the first half of the ceremony. The second half began when we raised a wrist to the other's lips and bit down. The magic in our blood would spill forth in that rush of crimson. A promise to provide. A promise to sha

"Father, stop!"Logan was suddenly there, pulling his dad away from me. It was just a bundle of cells at this point. There wasn't even a heartbeat yet! So how?I watched as the Alpha's angry face shifted into one of surprise, and he looked down at me. I quickly averted my gaze until he looked back at Logan."Shit." He breathed. It actually sounded like he felt bad. Not for hurting me, of course, but for potentially hurting his grandpup."Take her to the healer, then come right back here." Alpha Greyson ordered. "Leah."My attendant snapped to attention. "Sir?""Take over on dinner." And with that, he left the room, calling out. "And clean this mess up!" As he went.I breathed a sigh and winced. I found myself cradled to Skye's warm chest instead of falling to my doom as he shuffled along the fallen giant. The Healer kept his weight balanced and low, moving with slow deliberation so as to not stress the fracture that I had made. “What…?” Was all I could manage through the tears as I looked up at the taller male. “You carried me this far. I can carry you across one stupid ravine.” Skye's jaw was set in pain, and I didn't need his gift to know that his left arm was causing him tremendous pain with every subtle movement. Over his shoulder, the three pursuing wolves were gaining on us, and more had begun to clamber up the gnarled exposed root ball of the old Fir. We weren't going to reach the other side. “You have to leave me, Skye.” I begged, tugging on the front of his shirt like a child. “You can make it out of here, but not like this. Not with me weighing you down.” “Shut up.” Skye growled and clutched me tighter. “I'm not leaving you.” “But-” “God dammit, Ken

I could see the path weaving through the trees, laid out before me like a silver glowing ribbon. The moon's pale light gave my tired body enough strength to dart beyond the jaws snapping in my wake.I ran as I had never run before, still breathing hard but no longer feeling faint. The pure terror that had gripped me lessened its chokehold as the fluttering of Hope began to unfurl in my chest, yearning to take flight. The Moon Mother was with us. She was guiding us to freedom. She was guiding us…To a chasm! The path before us clearly led to a wide yawning mouth in the earth from which the sound of rushing water assaulted my ears. But there! The path led over the rift by way of a decaying Fir tree. It would be extremely risky, but the Goddess was on my side. She had led us here. So we had to make it, right?“Oh fuck!” Skye whimpered, barely audible over the blood rushing in my ears and the river roaring from its bed. “No, no. Kendra, no!”But my paws had already hit the gertiatric log

The Healer and I mirrored each other as our heads whipped to face the speaker, identical expressions of horror marring our features. There in the open doorway stood Alpha Greyson, and he was pissed. I could only imagine how much of our conversation he had overheard since I was so engrossed in storytelling that I hadn't heard, or even sensed, his approach. Dread settled in my stomach like a ball of iron and turned my knees to jelly. How could I have been so careless? I was usually so alert! “Fuck.” The word spilled from my mouth and cracked through the still air like a whip. This was exactly the kind of thing that I was hoping to avoid. Greyson growled low in his throat, expecting me to drop my gaze and show my belly like a good little submissive wolf, like the weak pathetic thing he had tried to make me. “No time to pack, Skye. We go, now.” I growled back at Greyson and shifted. I quickly realized that not taking my clothes off before shifting was a huge mistake as the fa

Skye gestured for me to follow him from the office to a small adjoining room that held a sink in the corner. “Thanks.” I gave my hands a hasty scrub with the antibacterial soap under some very hot water. When a quick sniff check confirmed that I had gotten all of the plant juice off my fingers, I sighed and dried my hands on my shirt, leaving dark smudges on the gray fabric. “Okay, well, if we're going to be leaving soon, we should probably start making a plan and packing supplies.” Skye mused. He folded one arm across his chest, tucking that hand in the elbow of his adjacent arm while tapping his chin with the other hand. His hazel eyes sought the ceiling in thought. “Do you know how long we'll be traveling?” He asked, turning his gaze to meet mine briefly. I shook my head, and he hummed. “We won't need a tent or sleeping bags since we can sleep in our fur. I won't be able to run on four legs, so stealth will have to be our prerogative.” “My wolf should be big enough for you t

As promised, I was permitted to go back to sleep once the guests had left. I wasn't tired anymore, but if I was going to run tomorrow, I was going to need my rest to gather all of the strength that I possessed. I managed to nap a little, but mostly, I thought about how I would escape. Patrols would be doubled with the lykaon nearby, and those four males hunting it could also pose a problem. I either needed to get enough of a head start that they couldn't catch up or find a way to slow them down. Pondering my options, my mind drifted to a little plant that I had thought of using on myself, but Silver had never allowed it. Now, it might give me the time I needed. The little wolfsbane had grown considerably despite my best attempts to prune it back to keep it hidden. It looked lush and vibrant, tucked against the wall where it grew despite the late February chill. The small buds had barely begun to form, but when they opened in several months, they would open into beautiful purple b

He was too casual. This one…I blinked, trying to cover my revulsion as realization struck me like a lightning bolt. This one relished in the hunt. He enjoyed watching life slip away with every fading beat of the heart. This one was a killer.“While he may be callous, Tyler is correct.” Nick spoke then for the first time since introducing himself. “They are tortured souls suffering for their sins, often driven to violence by their pain. So don't go on any runs alone until we catch this beast, little miss. We wouldn't want anything to happen to you.”Logan's grip around me tightened slightly. Whether protective or possessive, I wasn't sure, but I spoke quickly to put everyone at ease.“Oh, I won't be going very far from

I can't do this! The moment I stepped through the door and saw the three burly strangers standing with the Alpha, my stomach flipped, and I wanted to bolt. They were totally unknown variables, and I had no idea how they would act. But I knew that I was valuable to Alpha Greyson and to Logan, so I could only hope that I would be somewhat protected if they chose to attack. The door closed behind me, and I felt trapped as three heads turned towards us. “Ah, here they are now!” Alpha Greyson proclaimed wearing a large smile. “Gentlemen, this is my son Logan and his lovely mate-to-be, Silver. Logan, these men are from the White Mountain Pack to the south.” I did my best to keep my chin up as befitting a Luna in training, but I couldn't bring myself to look any of them in the eye as I gave them all a timid smile. Instead, I followed Logan to the coffee table between two couches on the left-hand side of the room to set down the tray I held. Logan, now free of his burden, quickly turned

Just as I started to think that I was safe, thundering footsteps tramped down the hall in my direction. Panic flooded my system, and I looked around desperately for something, anything that would keep my secret. I could not allow myself to be caught. My heart raced faster as the footsteps drew nearer. What could I do? With that thought, calm slid through me, and Silver took control of my body, letting me sink into the safe embrace of her pelt. “Worry not, Little One. I have you.” With that simple reassurance, Silver removed the clothes that I had been wearing and tucked them at the bottom of the dirty clothes hamper. Then, slipping back into the overly large t-shirt that I insisted on wearing as pajamas, she padded silently into the bathroom and closed the door just in time for the bedroom door to bang open. “Logan, get up.” The Alpha snapped. “Mmph… What time is it?” Logan asked groggily. I could hear him rolling over in the bed I assumed to face the door. “It's about a quarte

It was another quiet, misty morning when, in the chill of the predawn air, I crept from the warmth of blankets beside Logan, intending to go for a run. I pried myself from the alpha's son's grasp and dropped lightly off the side of the bed, scuttling around to collect my discarded clothes like a thief in the night. He didn't stir, too exhausted from trying to put a pup in me. I was grateful that he slept so soundly. As swiftly as I could, I stripped out of my pj's and into a faded sweatshirt with matching pants and a pair of Silently, I crept from the room, avoiding the creaky floorboards that refused to be fixed. It was still dark out, but I had excellent night vision, so the thick surrounding blanket of shadow didn’t bother me. Making sure not to wake anyone, I snuck downstairs and outside, easing the door closed behind me. I had nearly an hour before the dawn patrol ran circuit. Plenty of time. Breathing in the cool air, I felt full of life and energy. The scent of rain that had
