Prologue
Many years ago, the Kingdom of lunacrest had many enemies and was plagued by war and death. When the king died in battle, people say that his distressed queen had an affair with an unknown Devine being while seeking help to end the war and suffering of her people.
She gave birth to three immortal sons, popularly known as the triplet angel kings of Lunacrest. With their might they conquered the enemies of Lunacrest and oversaw the rebuilding of the Kingdom. Both human and werewolf kings of the neighbouring kingdoms gladly paid homage to them.
For many years, none of the angel kings has ever showed interest in marriage or relationships, but four weeks ago messegers from their kingdom spread out word that a contest has been set for all the royal ladies of the surrounding kingdoms to compete for the chance to be the queen of Lunacrest, married to one or all the three angel kings.
Chapter 1Keira's Pov
"I need you to swear by the gods that I look twice as beautiful as the moon and all the stars together." Our beautiful mistress demands in vivid excitement after gaping at the imperial palace ahead of us for almost an hour.
We are to be guests of the great palace of Lunacrest for five days, the time granted to our princess to showcase her feminine virtues and loyalty to the angel kings. If she gets selected to become their queen she will spend the rest of her life in the imposing palace, which looks like a piece of heaven that descended down to earth.
"Worry not your highness, you're the prettiest of all royal women. I am sure the angel kings will be awed by your bewitching face." Helen, one of my fellow servants, praises with the sweetest of smiles. She is Princess Lyna's favourite maid.
"Any noble man would gladly pay to lick your feet, your highness. The angel kings will feel honoured that you have graced their palace with such beauty." Lisa, Princess Lyna's second favourite servant, offers her praise.
I keep my mouth shut because I am her hated servant. I only speak to her when it's extremely necessary. Still I get snapped at more than anyone.
Royal women of every pack have been fighting for the chance to take part in the undignifying contest. Because it's not just about becoming the wife of three powerful angels, the inside of those imposing buildings must be like little heavens. Who wouldn't love to spend their lives in a earthly paradise sparkling with gold?
"I want to take one last look at my face and hair before we proceed. Nothing boosts my confidence more than the sight of my bewitching face." Princess Lyna states and her favourite servants nod in agreement.
"What are you waiting for, foolish human? Get me my mirror!" The Princess screams at me.
I hastily pull out her full length mirror from one of the bags we packed.
I kneel down on the floor of the carriage and hold up the mirror so that she doesn't have to see any part of my chubby body while watching her beauty.
She stares at her beautiful reflection, carefully checking if there is a thing out of place.
I have been her servant for about a year now since I failed to phase on my eighteenth birthday. Without a wolf one is considered a useless member of our small pack.
My father is the sole reason I wasn't banished or turned into a lowly slave. Being the gamma of the pack he was able to point out the things I am able to do to the alpha. It was decided that I become Princess Lyna's third servant. I am paid half of what my fellow servants are paid, reason being that I am a useless human.
I have hope that things will change for the better if Princess Lyna becomes the wife of the triplet angel kings. She might be less mean to me in their presence. I may get a fair pay like everyone else and probably be permitted to take part in Lunacrest's warrior training.
I may have a chance to a better life here, but I must first help Lyna win the hearts of the three angels kings so we won't be going back to Silverthorn.
Apart from her physical beauty, I doubt the Princess possesses any of the other required virtues. But I made it look like she is the embodiment of perfection in the application letter she made me write for her.
Yes, all contestants had to write a letter to the palace detailing their qualifications in order to be given the rare opportunity to come to this palace and showcase their most feminine virtues and unwavering loyalty to the triplet angel kings.
I wrote the letter as best as I could. Now our mistress must perfectly display an angelic character in order to be picked by the triplet angel kings.
"Look, my hair is already a mess!" Lyna gasps, pointing at a strand of her blonde hair that has fallen out of place.
Lisa and Helen hurry to fix the hair with colourful pins while muttering assurances that she is still as beautiful as the morning sun.
This is a great quest that may change the future of our pack forever, I would not have been allowed to come if I wasn't the one that wrote the application letter that got her accepted in the contest. Yes, all contestants had to write a letter to the palace detailing their qualifications in order to be given the rare opportunity to come to this palace and showcase their most feminine virtues and unwavering loyalty to the triplet angel kings.
Lyna stares at her reflection for a long while before turning away.
I set aside the mirror and settle back on my seat as the carriage carries on towards the big gates.
The uniformed guards at the big gates list down our names and the purpose of our visit before letting us in.
The big palace buildings looks even more beautiful upclose. Meticulously curved statues of three flying angels sets at the top of the tallest building. They are decorated with shimmering gold engravings that hints of the power and wealth of the angel kings.
For a brief moment I am awestruck by the sheer beauty of the lush gardens and masterfully sculpted sculptures scattered around the expansive coumpound that I fail to notice the carriage halting near the front entrance of the first building.
"Grab my bags, human! I swear I will send you back to Silverthorn if you make me repeat myself again!" Lyna snaps, having stepped out of the carriage with the help of Lisa and Helen who are now holding the tail of her dress.
I quickly gather the heavy bags and follow them down the path leading to the open doors of the palace entrance.
Three women in elegant gowns step out and walk forward briskly to meet us. They are escorted by four young servants in uniform.
"Welcome, Princess Lyna of Silverthorn." The first woman greets Lyna. "My name is Doria, a distant cousin of his Majesty King Fenris, King Garren and King Conrad. I am in charge of overseeing the performance of all contestants and I have been looking forward to your arrival. Your application letter was quite impressive, my cousins may pick you if you showcase the same amount of wisdom and humility during the tests." She adds with a polite smile.
Lyna appears exhilarated by the praise as she happily smiles. "I am highly grateful for the opportunity I have been granted, your highness lady Doria. You have my word that my performance will not disappoint you or the great kings." She assures, bowing in a show of respect for the distant cousin of the kings. With the heavy bags I am carrying I can only bow my head slightly.
"Your maids may hand the bags to our servants, they will help you settle comfortably in your prepared quarters." The royal woman says gesturing at her uniformed servants to take the bags. But Lyna stops them.
"You don't need to burden your servants with my luggage, my maid is well capable of carrying the bags to the room you have prepared." She says and the royal woman and her maids nod.
"I will show you to your guest room so you can rest from the journey and prepare for tomorrow's test." Doria says and gestures at Lyna to follow as she turns around to lead the way into the palace.
I walk behind everyone struggling with the weight of the bags. Our hosts do not know that I am wolfless so they think that the weight of the bags isn't an issue, my mistress has after all assured them that I am well capable of carrying the load.
I notice how every room of the palace is spacious and full of guilded furniture. It is exactly as I expected, a little paradise.
"If I may ask, when will I be meeting the kings?" Lyna asks as Doria guides the way down the hallways of the palace.
"My cousins appointed a special council that will oversee the performance of each contestant and report to them. I am the head of that council. No contestant is allowed to meet the great kings unless they have finished all the tests and been selected to marry the kings." Lady Doria answers, causing Lyna's smile to fade and get replaced by a look of worry.
"You mean that I will not see the alpha kings until I have been selected to be their queen?" She questions in disbelieve.
"My cousins trusts that I and the council will select the best bride for them. They want a woman with the right virtues, nothing else will matter unless you're their fated mate." Lady Doria replies.
"But if a contestant has a critical issue or proposition she wishes to speak to them about she can request for a meeting with them through a letter that will be delivered to them by the council. They shall then accept or turn down the request to meet depending on if the contents of the letter interests them. Only one of our last four contestants who failed the tests managed to got the chance to meet the kings. It is not easy to get their attention through the letter." She adds and Lyna looks even more devastated. She had hoped to impress the kings with her beauty, but it sounds like she may go back to Silverthorn without meeting them.
One had thought that the famous angels are eager to meet every one of the royal women who arrives here to compete for their hand in marriage, but it sounds like they are only interested in getting a modest woman to bed but not to love. I know that Lyna doesn't mind the loveless marriage, she will have the wealth and the special status of the queen of Lunacrest.
"This will be your quest quarters for now, Princess." Lady Doria says after halting in front of a wooden door. One of the servants takes out a key and ushers us into the opulent room with a king-size bed, a massive closet and a guilded table and chair near the window.
I set the bags down beside the big bed.
"There are four beds for your maids in the next room." Lady Doria informs. Princess Lyna nods and smiles in gratitude.
"If you get selected to marry our kings you will be allowed to move to the main palace where they stay." Lady Doria adds. Lyna appears motivated as she nods her head vigorously. She doesn't however look as confident as she was before she found out that she won't be meeting the triplet kings anytime soon unless she can interest them with contents of a letter.
"Your tests will begin tomorrow. We will provide anything you need so you can rest well." Lady Doria says before gesturing at her servants to leave us.
"We wish you the best of luck." She adds before stepping out of the room.We immediately start unpacking Princess Lyna's bags so we can put her exquisite dresses in the closet.
"I must meet the kings, they will choose me when they see my face." Lyna desperately says, pacing around the room.
"Write that letter now!" She orders, pointing at me. "And it better make them want to meet me or you I will no longer have use for you." She threatens.
I stand frozen with shock for a long moment. Lady Doria said that only one of the last contestants who have so far failed the trials managed to get a chance to meet the triplet angel kings. And I am sure that she didn't meet them on the first or second day.
I however cannot afford being sent back to Silverthorn right now, I would be banished for failing their Princess.
Keira's povHow can I know what would interest the great kings just a few minutes after arriving? The Princess will never pass the test of patience if there is one."Your highness, I do not think it's possible to get the attention of the busy kings right now. We do not know much about them yet." I try to reason with the princess. But she scoffs as expected. She and reasoning simply do not get along. "You're useless to me if you cannot compose that letter. I should have picked someone with better brains." She says and I immediately become apprehensive. "I will do the best I can, your highness. Give me a moment to think." I assure and she shrugs her shoulders after a moment of glaring at me. I pick up my small bag that has two dresses and a couple of books in it. I make my way to the next room where Lady Doria said that there are beds for me, Lisa and Helen. I walk into the small room with four beds and a single wooden table at the centre. The room is much better than the dark baseme
Keira's PovHelen and Lisa gets done styling Princess Lyna's hair with golden pins just as Lady Doria walks into the room without bothering to knock. Princess Lyna rises and bows her head in respect. "I assume you have rested well and that you're ready for your first test. One of your most impressive virtues will be tested today." She says and Lyna confidently nods her head. "Good, follow me, the council is waiting." Lady Daria says and turns to lead the way out. We all follow behind, Lyna wearing an excited smile. She trusts that her beauty will impress the council enough to help let her pass the tests. Lady Doria leads us towards a different palace building reserved for kings' officials and other employees. The paved paths are full of uniformed servants in haste and crowds of unknown people. Princess Lyna holds her head high as she walks gracefully behind Lady Dorian. A plump servant carrying a tray with plates of food and glasses of wine walks fast towards us. She walks steadi
Keira's POV"How could they do this to me? A servant ruined my dress and I was supposed to remain calm?" Princess Lyna fumes, pacing around the room. She changed into another exquisite dress, but her eyes are still wet from all the crying."I am sorry your highness, their tests seem to be quite tricky. But you have only failed one test, we still have a great chance of winning." Helen comforts. "How can I pass another test if they are so difficult and humiliating?" Lyna laments. We all fall silent for a long moment. Our hosts seem to be testing a person's character and I think Princess Lyna would easily pass if she were a good person. No good person would react the way she did. But telling her that would make her more furious. "I know that Keira is a weak human, but she did seem to notice that you were being tested. I think it might get easier if you let her help." Lisa surprisingly suggests. It's the first time she has acknowledged that I am not completely useless. I smile inward
Keira's PovAnxiety makes my intestines churn as the man unfolds the letter. The letter got the attention of the kings just as Princess Lyna wanted, but I will still be in trouble for what I wrote."Congratulations, Princess of Silverthorn. You're the second contestant to get the attention of our kings through a letter." The man announces and Princess Lyna literally jumps. "Yes! I knew it!" She screams in exhilaration. "They must be impressed!"The man nods his head. "Of course they are. A woman with combat skills and a gift of courage is a rare gem. You must be proud of your unique skills to challenge the angel kings to a duel. Not even the best of our knights has ever done that, believe me we are all intrigued." He says and Princess Lyna freezes. She matches forward and snatches the letter from his hands. Her mouth falls open with shock as she quietly reads the contents of the letter. I would not have suggested a test of combat skills and courage if she had not pressured me to wr
I joined Margret and her fellow diligent servants in preparing a magnificent banquet hall, in the second palace building, for tomorrow's extravagant party. Since leaving Silverthorn my mind has been so occupied that I almost forgot about tomorrow being the first day of the full moon.Apparently the angel kings sets a banquet for all the governors of their massive kingdom to come feast and get entertained on the first day of the full moon. The atmosphere is filled with anticipation and excitement as everyone works together to create a truly mesmerizing experience for the esteemed guests. As we finish wiping the smooth floor, another team of servants meticulously arranges long wooden tables in precise rows, each adorned with crisp, white linen tablecloths that cascade all the way to the floor. Delicate, fragrant flower arrangements fill the air with their sweet aroma, carefully placed as centerpieces along the tables.A group of talented chefs can be seen scurrying around the massive s
I have been thinking the whole night, yet I haven't figured out where I would go if Princess Lyna gets selected to become the wife of the Angel Kings and I get fired. Her father would be glad to banish me if I return to Silverthorn, that or he would turn me into a slave of his pack.Maybe I should plead my case with the angel kings. So far I have met two and they were extremely rude. But I have endured rudeness before. Are servants even allowed to write letters to them like princesses? I will have to ask my only friend Margret. Lisa and Helen hold towels ready as a naked Princess Lyna emerges from the basin full of warm water and aromatic herbs. Passing yesterday's test of loyalty seems to have revived her confidence. She stands in an elegant posture as Helen and Lisa wrap towels around her wet body and hair. I grab a rug wipe all the water that has spilled on the floor while Helen and Lisa help the Princess dry her hair, oil her smooth skin and choose the best gown to wear. Toda
Fenris's PovI had hoped that my brother Conrad was wrong, that a weak servant girl cannot be our fated mate. That hope vanished the moment I smelled her enchanting scent. It was faint, but it appeased my senses more than any music or wine has ever done. I had an immense urge to get closer and inhale more of it. But I changed my mind as soon as I was standing in front of her. She had the most beautiful hair I have seen on a human head though. But she wore an old, wrinkled dress with a permanent stain at the front and didn't seem bothered.I didn't see her face as she kept her head bowed even when I said the rudest things about her. I wonder if her weak human senses acknowledged the natural, unwelcome pull between us. "If you too felt the mild mate bond then we can conclude that we have been mated to a wretched servant girl." Garren, the only one of us that is yet to meet the girl, says while gulping down another glass of wine. The servant girl has become the topic of our dinner an
Keira's PovThe banquet hall, with its luxurious furnishings and sumptuous offerings, exudes an air of majesty and grandeur. The great guests that have already arrived grace the space with their elegance and charm. In the gallery above, musicians play lively tunes on lutes, harps, and violins. Their music floating down into the hall, adding a joyful melody to the bustling feast below. The palace servants are in their positions, ready to attend to the needs of the distinguished guests. Every one of us including Princess Lyna appears stupefied by the sheer opulence of the place. The servant girl in a princess's dress giggles at the sight of all the delicious luxury she is about to experience. My eyes search the room for Margaret's face. She is surprisingly nowhere within sight. But I recognize the faces of some of Lady Doria's fellow councilmembers. Their presence here means that they will be in watch for every one of Princess Lyna's actions. "Come, you will seat and eat with the go
One of the council members rises from his seat. "The council would like to know if you're comfortable and ready to begin the test, your highness." He inquires in a gentle voice.Princess Lyna glances at me before nodding her head. "Sir Reynolds will begin with the first question." The councilman says and settles back in his sit.Another rises and my anxiety tightens it's hold on my mind. I take deep breaths to overcome the apprehension as he posses the first question."If you marry our kings and this kingdom happens to go to war with your father's kingdom, where would your loyalties lie, your highness?" He questions. I didn't expect the questions to be so difficult. I take my time to reflect while Princess Lyna pretends to write her answer on the parchment. Apparently the beloved princess isn't capable of writing a comprehensible answer, probably because she isn't even trying. I stare at the paper as if reading from it as I personally answer the question."If it were within my pow
They are indeed here. I am not sure I can think clearly in their presence. It's not just their scents affecting my senses, our mate bond isn't broken because I never accepted their rejection. I will feel an unneeded attraction towards them. I must act like I have never met them, like I am not their mate. In order to make Princess Lyna their future wife, I need to focus on correctly answering the questions, help her pass the test of wisdom without them noticing.Their beautiful faces are the first thing I notice when we walk into the hall. It's sad that their breathtaking beauty is only skin deep. I watch as they rise from their seats behind the council and start approaching. The air around me thickens with their scents, but their eyes are on Princess Lyna. Their amorous smiles make my heart swell with pain. They are stunned by her beauty, which is enhanced by layers of makeup and the shimmering jewellery. Princess Lyna bows her head slightly in a show of respect and luckily rememb
Keira's PovPrincess Lyna stands beside her king-size bed with her hands folded in front of her chest. She wants the plan, one that is supposed that help her pass the test of wisdom without figuring out the right answers to the questions herself.Helen and Lisa are seated on the floor once again, skillfully cutting pieces of soft white fabrics and lace to make a stunning wedding gown for the princess. She is already preparing for her wedding with the angel kings, like she is so sure that I can make her pass her final test. "I am assuming that you have come up with a good plan." She says in a frigid tone. "Tell me everything." She orders. "I have thought of a plan, but I will need your help." I say. "I already told you that I cannot answer the questions." She insists. "Yes, I will answer them for you." I reply. "But for that to happen I will need you to lie to Lady Doria and the council." "Lie about what?" She questions. "Having a sore throat." I answer. Her face wrinkles with
Keira's PovI have no way of knowing what questions they will ask her, so how am I supposed to help? "You have been reading countless books, you must know the answer to every question they might ask." Princess Lyna says, seeking an immediate answer of how I plan to help her pass the test of wisdom. I may have read too many books but I am not the one supposed to answer the questions. "I can teach you as much as I can before the test." I suggest, still aware that it won't help. The council wishes to test her wisdom, so they will choose to ask questions that will require profound thinking. "That's ridiculous. I cannot learn a million things within one night." Princess Lyna argues. "Get your smart brain to think of a better plan before tomorrow. Remember that you will no longer have a job if I fail that test." She says in a stern tone. It's like she has already forgotten that I am the one that just helped her pass the test of humility. She is yet to even thank me for it. "I will be
With Helen and Lisa holding the tail of Princess Lyna's dress, we have to walk slower than the others. The space between us and the councilmembers keeps increasing as we go. The populated city of Lunacrest is like a beehive, full of activities and still incredibly organized.People stare at Princess Lyna just like she wanted. She waves her hand, charming them with her precious attention. She stops waving instantly when Lady Doria and her councilmembers start leading us through what looks like an extremely impoverished section of the city.Wretched beggars step out of dilapidated buildings and start following us, pleading for coins. Helen and Lisa lift the tail of Princess Lyna's dress higher and pick up pace in a desperate attempt to get away from the miserable people. Lady Doria and her councilmembers seem unbothered as they keep glancing back at us several more times than before. This must be the test."Please leave us a coin . . . your highness! My husband is dead and my sons a
Keira's povI step out to find a smiling Margret standing at the door of our small servant quarters, a red rose in her right hand. I wonder where she has been throughout the day. She wasn't at the banquet, nor anywhere I walked."You look sad," she observes, "did any of the angel kings scold again?" She asks in a voice full of concern. I am supposed to keep it a secret that I am the mate of the angel kings, so I choose to lie."My mistress had a hard day. We are all just tired." I say. "I am sorry that your mistress failed the test so terribly. I should have been there to help." She says ruefully. "Where were you?" I ask."I met my mate." She informs with a joyous smile. "He doesn't care that I am human. He accepted me because he believes I am a good person. Lady Doria gave us a day off so we could go out and celebrate our meeting." She expounds, her eyes glowing with pride. She got a mate who appreciates her benign character. I wish the same had happened to me. Even a poor peasan
Keira's Pov"What did the angel kings speak to you about?" Princess Lyna demands for the tenth time, her curiosity turning into anger as I stay quiet."None of my maids are allowed to keep secrets. So speak up or I will send you back to Silverthorn to become the pack slave like you were supposed to be!" She threatens. "I do not see a reason she is withholding that information unless she was called to speak foul of our mistress." Helen eagerly excuses. I shake my head, finally tired of enduring their demands and threats. If I had a choice, no one would ever know about the angel kings being my mates or their rude rejection. But right now the only other choice I have is to return to Silverthorn, get banished or become the slave of the pack."You better not have said anything awful about me, human! I will claw off your skin before getting the palace guards to throw you out!" Princess Lyna hisses, her angry wolf claws breaking through the tips of her fingers."I wasn't summoned to talk a
The two guards push the doors open without inquiring my identity or intent. The alluring scents flood my nostrils and I allow myself to breathe deeper, welcoming their soothing abilities.I know they are the scents of the angel kings. I however do not understand why they are so profound tonight. The guards gesture at me to go ahead and walk in alone while the palace servants wait at the door. My stomach churns as I take steps into the spacious chamber. The throne room is a blend of beauty, opulence and grandeur. The furniture is made of rich, dark woods, upholstered in lush fabrics adorned with embroidery and patterns. Massive fireplaces line the walls, their roaring fires casting warmth throughout the room. The floor rises at the far head of the room where three beautiful figures sit on majestic thrones. Their striking faces are as alike as three peas in a pod. A strange, overwhelming urge to run up to them and take each into my arms suddenly grips my mind and I have to literally
Keira's PovHellen and Lisa sit on a mat on the floor with the finest fabrics scattered all around them. They are carefully sewing another exquisite dress for Princess Lyna. The refined princess tried on the ones in the closet and didn't think any outlines her curves well enough to make the angel kings wish she was their queen. So she ordered her favourite maids to make another, cut and sewn in accordance to her wishes. I am standing aside, holding the threads and needles for them since I am not allowed to touch anything that the Princess might wear or eat. They always act like I have a disease she might catch. Princess Lyna lies in bed, waiting for her servants to make the loveliest of dresses for her to wear during the duel with the angel kings. I wonder if she has considered learning one or two things about sword fighting. Not that there is time to learn much, which means that the kings will realise that she got no combat skills as soon as she steps into the battlefield in a tigh
