CHAPTER SIX
I watched the gleaming city disinterestedly. I was too occupied to think of the beautiful skyscrapers and the people walking on the sidewalk looking fashionable and happy. Eden Central was the most expensive part of the city. The people who can afford to live here usually are the ultra-rich, talented and gifted. The richest among them live in Centro-central.
In comparison, Eden Inner are the workers who serve and work in the Central city. They were the working class of Eden. Then, there was also another part of Eden that was seldom talked about. Outer Eden was a place for people frequented by tugs and undocumented visitors who overstayed or committed a crime but had no means to stay or return to their hometown.
Eden was lord by one man like my hometown was lord by Aliyah's father. He acted according to the command of the Centro-central city. He was the lord of all the lord and held all the power of all cities. Above from the Lords was the member of the inner sanctum. They wield and maintain the vital decision of the country. Member of the inner sanctum is the priestess, the guardian, the militia, and legislation. Above the inner sanctum are the most powerful and gifted being, the Enlightened. The Enlightened one has three members, two males and one female. The two male members must be of God's descent, meaning angels and demons. One should hold the path to light and the other one to darkness. The other member is an Enlightened Seer. She will listen to both of them and decide where to take the path. Yet, no one has seen them before. Some people think that they are just an imagination to coerce people to pay their taxes and follow the rules they set.
My phone rang. I pulled it from my back pocket and answered it excitedly. "Hi, Aliyah!"
"You already arrive at your destination?" I heard her voice from across the line. Her voice sounds happy, like she always is.
"Nope, we are still riding the train. Maybe thirty minutes from now, we will arrive at our destination." I touched the pendant of the necklace she gave me. Feeling her presence beside me.
"Keep in touch, okay...ahh, by the way, I'm going to Eden, too. My Dad was suddenly called by the Central Lord. I will be arriving there tomorrow." Aliyah excited voice pierced my heart with joy. Seeing her in a town so different from our hometown is an adventure.
"Wow! That's great...call me when you arrive, okay?"
"Yes. We should meet and probably have a girl bonding without your two security guards." I laughed at her description of my father and Samuel. "Don't tell them that I'm coming. Will keep it a surprise, okay?"
"Okay..." I glanced at Papa, who was reading the news while my brother napping on the trip. "See you soon. Take care."
"Bye, take care, Sam." I looked happily outside. My mood was changing from glum to anticipation of my friend coming. The idea of spending the whole afternoon doing shopping or touring the city lifted my spirit.
***
The Outer Eden is way too different from Inner Eden and Central Eden. The area was filled with smug garbage and the stench of the city. Condominiums and structures were so dilapidated that you could see the grime and graffiti on the walls. Central Eden and even Inner Eden look prosperous; this part was the opposite. I can see some people huddled together in a fire wearing dirty clothes. Everyone looks hungry and sickly. Not one seems happy. Gloomy faces and hopeless people slowly walked at the dirty streets filled with mud.
Samuel pulled me closer to his side and my father on the other side. I can feel the tension building up at them when we pass some youngsters drinking and smoking on the sidewalk.
"Just close your eyes. Don't look up." Samuel warns me. I nodded as I was guided by them towards a darker alley.
"Who's that beauty with you, man?!" Drunk youngsters called at them. "Share your blessings..." They erupted with laughter. They doggedly walk on and ignore them. We turned in a corner much dimmer than the rest of the area. I can smell the stink of human waste from the gutter beneath our feet. I stopped and vomited. Hating the smell coming from the sewer.
"I'm sorry... that's too much." I wipe my mouth with the handkerchief I tucked under my jacket pocket.
"Let's hurry up, Sam..." Samuel grabbed my arm and pushed me to walk faster. He turned around. "Hurry... someone's coming." We can hear footsteps coming towards us.
Papa held my other hand and pulled me to run with them. It was my first alley walk, and I think the longest. It felt like it was a maze as we ran the alley. My feet started to ache, and my breathing was labored as we ran. Then we stop in an alley where there's no light. It was so dark, and the hairs at the back of my neck stood up. The air was heavy. I can feel the icy air touching my skin. My hand dug at Samuel's arm, feeling sudden fear.
"We're here," Samuel said quietly.
"Are you sure...it looks dangerous, Samuel. I don't think this is the right alley." I stared at the darkness in alarm. No person in his right mind would live in this kind of place.
"Listened...Sam. I'm here. Just hold my hand. I promise nothing will harm you." Samuel nod at our father.
"Isn't Papa coming with us?" I looked alarmed at our father, who smiled at me reassuringly.
"I will wait for you here, Samantha. I'm afraid... I'm not allowed to enter inside."
"Why? I cannot leave you here..." I grabbed Papa's hand, but he deflected it. He steps back, out of reach, and turns around.
Samuel gripped my hand. "Papa is not allowed to the place of the dammed Sam. We are the only ones who can enter."
"Place of the dammed?" I gasped in shock. Was he talking of hell? "You're kidding, right?"
"No, I'm not. If you believe about the seeker, why can't you believe that there is such a place? This is the pit..." Samuel glance at the alley. "Let's go; we're losing time."
We ran so fast that I felt my feet had grown wings. I can't touch the ground. Only nothingness and despair inside this long tunnel of darkness. Samuel half pulled and half carried me as we swiftly ran towards a glowing light from afar. My body felt like air. I can hear the moan and scream somewhere.
"It's almost closing," Samuel said in alarm. Without many words, he holds me tight, carry me and swiftly fly. I gasped as I saw his wings coming out from his body. Numbly, I stared at him. I forgot everything except the realization that this man is not a man but an angel. And he is not my brother.
CHAPTER 7 The light blinded me as we approached the portal. In the nick of time, we managed to squeeze in before the portal was closed. Samuel gently put me down. I swayed, my knees getting weak. He tightly held me before I stumbled. With great effort, I pushed him away. Shock and realization of who he has still filled me with awe, wonder, and then boiling anger. Her confused emotion was, seething just below the surface but the stress and revelation of secrets these past days had taken a toll. After all, it's not every day you will learn that fallen angels hunt you, then lose a brother who turns out to be an angel—going on a trip of a lifetime, sightseeing the place of the dammed. Heck...no one can top this adventure. I hysterically laughed, thinking about how I thought my life was ordinary and mundane. And now, I got what I wished for, an experience like no other with a spice of death just nipping at my heels. I'm about to lose my mind just thinking about it.
CHAPTER 8 "You're here at last...been expecting you for a very long time." She said to me. "Your mother left a gift for you." She stood up and walked towards the bookshelf. She pulled a red book and gave it to me. I looked at the red leather-bound book and gently touched it in awe. I could not believe that my mother had left something for me. "She said that if she left it with the living, someone might find it. So, she brings this book here. Your mother was a clever woman. She outsmarted the angels, eh, and look at you now still alive and undiscovered." Old black eyes peered into mine with interest, and her smile gave me the creeps. I shudder involuntarily. Nervously, I said, "Seer, I thank you for keeping it for me. Thank you for helping my mother. But the main reason why I came here is that I have a vision. I don't want it to happen. Is it possible to stop it?" The older woman smiled toothlessly. "Why would you want that? Your fate wa
CHAPTER 9 I stumbled out of the tunnel. I looked around and was surprised that it was already morning and I was in the central city. I gasped at the sight and sound surrounding me. Fumbling my dark glasses, I hurriedly wore them to avoid the intense feeling I felt. I fished my way out of the steep climbed towards the cemented street. Touching the dirty walls and jagged rocks, I hoist myself up to the road above with my hands. All my life, I have relied on how I felt. Now was the perfect time to use it without the aid of my eyes. I stopped and listened to the sound passing me. I smelt the air, this was cleaner than the inner city, and it smells of people that ooze with confidence, wealth, and security. My main goal now was to locate Mateo. My heart told me to go east side of the city. I reached for my walking stick in my jacket pocket and unfolded it.Following my instinct, I move towards the east part of the city. I could hear the scream of
CHAPTER 10 He was looking at me thoroughly like a specimen in a petri dish. His dark blue eyes roamed my face intently as if memorizing every inch of me. I squirmed at the assault of his gaze. Then, he moves closer to me. I trembled in fear, and my heart ripped my chest in pain. I gasped then, he touched my chest, and my heartbeat gently beat like it was in peace again. "At last, I've seen you. Your mother was beautiful, but I never imagined how exquisite you are until now. "He touched my face gently. "I wonder all these years how you look like, and now here you are." "Your name is Mateo, right?" I asked while squirming away from his touch. "You're the seer seeker." "Yes, Samantha Grey. I am Mateo, and I'm a seer seeker." He crossed his arm and continued to study me. My foolish heart seemed to beat a little faster as he locked his eyes on mine. "You've seen us in the Dammed place." I whispered, knowing the answer full well, but I just ne
CHAPTER 11 I felt uncomfortable with the gown chosen for me. The dress was fiery red that glowed like one every time the cloth caught the light from the chandeliers above. It was beautiful to see, except for how revealing it was that I felt like I was walking naked. When Mateo saw me in this dress, he took a double breath and tried not to look affected. But I saw his expression before he could hide it. "Let's go." He said coldly. After the incident with dinner, he has been cold and distant with how he treats me. I tried to ignore him too, but I was aching inside. Inside the car, he said monotonously, "There are few rules as a human companion in our world Samantha. If a human approaches you, you are free to interact with him or not because you are equals. However, members of the inner sanctum must be treated with respect. You cannot deny them a request unless it harms each other. Understand?" "Yes, but what about the enlightened?"
CHAPTER 12 My heart started pumping. Both Samuel and Mateo tried to block me by their bodies by pushing me behind. My brother gripped my hand tightly while Mateo crossed his arm, trying to look cool. The Enlightened stopped in front of us. I have been wondering how they looked. They seem a myth than reality, but tonight, the three most powerful beings are in front of us. I tried to peer, but the two angels, keep blocking my sight. "What a surprised, the two of you in one room." I recognized the voice immediately. Once you hear the voice, you cannot forget it. It was calm, relaxed, and soft but hinting of authority that can bring tremors to your body. "Father, good evening," Mateo said softly, equally self-assured. "I invited Samuel to join us." CHAPTER 13 I lay down flat at the cold marble stone. Beside me was Samuel, crouching low. The gala had already ended, but the two of them remained. When Samuel offered me a choice, of course, I jumped into his offer. I prefer to stay with Samuel, who I've known all my life. I like to stay with Mateo, who was the cause of my mother's death. "You know, I'll always choose you, Samuel. You are, after all, my brother." Samuel smiled triumphantly and looked at Mateo." You heard her. She chooses me." Mateo smiled mockingly, "For now, I let you have Samantha, but you know the truth, Samuel. She always belongs to me."&nbs
CHAPTER 14 Victor Grey was lying on the floor unconscious. He was sleeping like a child inside an energy dome that sapped off your strength slowly. There were no bars of steel nor any barrier in the prison of Eden, only strange energy that would surround your body, sipping your fuel slowly and absorbing it for his consumption. It feeds on prisoners' fears and insecurities. The more dangerous the prisoner, the color of the power will become bluer, showing the intensity of his sins. My father had only a soft glow, meaning he was not a dangerous man. I ran towards him and called his name softly. "Papa, please wake up," I whispered tearfully. His skin has turned ashen. "Do not put in your hand inside, Sam," My brother warned me. He looked around for the guards, who were strangely not around. Something was not right. "We need to find the
CHAPTER 15 The long walk towards the center of Eden where the Tree of life and Knowledge were located and where the serpents live was the longest tiring walk I have experienced. The sunset from the horizon and the moon rising on the other side lighted our path towards where the Beast lay waiting for us. The animals and plants seemed quiet as we strode towards the center. I hold my fathers’ hand as if seeking his warmth for comfort. Victor Grey grip my hand to reassure her. Samuel was exceptionally quiet and alert as we got nearer to the Tree. My legs were getting heavy from the walk. It seems that every time we took a step, my body was getting weaker. My heart beat fast, and I prayed for Mateo to come as he saved me at the river spirit. Would he come? &nbs
