The knocking sound of the door echoes throughout the surgery room.. It sounds weird to the ear to listen to unfamiliar noise but it only means that she has finally returned home. No more foreign languages but only mother tongues of where Alison originated.
“Dr Ali, someone claiming to be from the police department, Sarjan Aeron is here to see you.”
“Alright. Let him in & have him wait inside my office. I’ll be there in a minute.” the little woman who was heavily pregnant replied without even turning to see who was talking. “Alright, Fio.” She turned to her assistant with a smile. “ Let’s finish this with the final impression-taking.”
“I’ll do this, Dr Ali. You can go ahead & take a break.”
“Thanks, Fio. I do need my rest now.” Dr Alison smiled with a heave of sigh. She gave a soft rub on her slightly hardened and on-off rough movement visible on her swollen tummy. She turned to the patient with a laugh. “Don’t worry. Mrs Didi. Fio here is very experienced in impression-taking. I will be seeing you at your next appointment.” With that Alison leaves the surgery room after removing her dirty rubber gloves and dusting off herself.
Alison’s cheerful face didn’t last long. Her face turns pale.
Sarjan Aeron has dropped troubling news to her just like that. Alison can feel her tummy harden at the news. She had to give it a soft rub to comfort the distressed baby.
“I need to sit.” Alison’s hands trembling. She grabs hold of the edge of her desk trying to hide it but Aeron has been observing her from the moment she entered the room, can’t help but feel sympathetic to her. “A..are you sure?” her hoarse voice is more like a whispering now with a little trembling too.
“I’m afraid it is what you heard, Dr Alison.” he can’t be more sure about it since he already read through the documents sent to him a few days ago & even called Singapore’s representative about it.
“But I thought it was already over three years ago.” Dr Alison finally sat on her high chair behind her desk. She struggles to get a little space between her huge tummy & the desk for a little comfort but not really helping when Aeron’s brow knitted and looked discomfort, turned away. Facing the man sitting on the sofa in the front doesn’t ease her feeling that her unborn child is at risk of being taken away from her. She gulped down her saliva nervously and unaware, clenching her palm tightly. She can't possibly let history repeat itself. She won’t let that happen ever again. She looked puzzled. The young police officer didn't even look sympathetic at all. He just sat there looking unfazed.
She gulped down her dry saliva. Cold sweats run through her back, trenching her thin blouse. “How did she find me after those years? She didn't even care about me when I was on the brink of dying in South Korea. Now she wants something from me?” she was mumbling to herself but Aeron caught on to her every word clearly.
Sarjan Aeron furrowed brow watching her in that state. All he saw was a nervous mother looking fragile with a big tummy, so amazed that her tiny body was able to carry that much weight of a baby at the brink of tearing any second. “What do you mean by that?”
She turned toward him as if she was surprised to know he might have heard what she was saying a moment ago. She stares hard at him with a hint of seriousness in her eyes that makes her appear a strong & not that easy bully type of woman. Aeron knew what she’s doing at that moment and only smiled at her. “Don’t worry, Dr Alison. You can trust me in this.”
Dr Alison turned away at his reassurance. His knitted brows deepen. Confused.
“You might not know or care about this, Sarjan,” Dr Alison started, in a serious tone. “A few months ago, I almost died in her schemes.” She turned toward him. He can tell she is nervous. Her eyes were trembling. “She won’t stop until she sees my corpse sent to her! Now, you tell me how on earth does she possibly know that I am having a baby at this very moment?” she already stood up with a heavy breathing and flushed face. “How can I be calm thinking that some psycho woman out there demands something that is not even hers to claim? Even you might be her people.” She looked uncomfortable with one hand holding her tummy and the other hand pressed on the desk. Her tummy hardened.
“Please calm down, Dr Alison.” Surprised with her sudden last words, Aeron jumped from his seat about to deny when he saw her stricken expression, trying to reach out to her. This is not his area of speciality. Women’s tears. Also, their weapon to get what they want. He firmly stands still not far from the woman ready to catch her if disaster strikes. He won’t be swayed with such a woman scheme. He didn’t even know this woman really well. All he knew about her was she just returned about two months ago. Alone. Six months pregnant. That from her flight medical data he was able to retrieve. After spending time working 3 years with a highly prestigious private dental clinic in Gangnam City, South Korea.
It took five minutes of long and heavy breathing before she calmed down and her breathing slowly returned to normal as she waves him away signalling that she was fine. Aeron looks not confident with her heavy state, refusing to get her more emotional than before staying where he was. He was aware she was fully cautious of him. Maybe she made it up from her own experiences or her paranoia towards reinforcers like himself.
“How long have you been with the police, Sarjan?” the question struck him with a weird silence. “You look young and ambitious per…”
“Five years this May.” he cut off the annoying question. Young. People often question his credibility & distrust him in doing his job. Five years should be a year of lots of experience in the police department. It was also a good year to get married & have a family like a normal person. But, he only spends most of his time with more cases and sometimes workshops to enhance the skills needed for him to get into that special division. He almost sees that smirk on the corner of her lips.
“You are the man with principle, Sarjan,” Alison looked up to see direct eye to eye with him. Aeron nodded with seriousness. “What will you say if I tell you that I did not murder my ex-husband and my son, will you believe me?”
Aeron did not immediately respond to her question. Not that he hesitated to reply but he knew she was weighing up if she could put her trust with him. She looked serious and yet worn out. The days he spent on the case before coming to meet her only means he knew about the case like around his finger and yet spending only a few minutes with her, gave him the idea that there are holes everywhere to the evidence that he saw so far. “Yes. I believe you.” There. He never risks anything without logical reason. Here, he said it all. Was it a pity? He will never know. The next words make him freeze.
“Thank you very much,” Alison has been batting her breath awaiting his answer, finally letting out a relieving breath. Tears streaming down her eyes as the heavy burden of being stamped as murder has been lifted.
“Don’t thank me yet. I just say I believe you. I am not the judge. You know, I can’t..” He had plenty of surprises from this little woman & it still did not give him the right to get the gratitude that she spoke of.
“That's enough for me. Thank you again.”
“I should leave now since you got the message." Aeron paled as he watched at her crying profile. He backed away from her several steps until his back leaning on the hard wall, not far from the door. "But, how should I report back to the lawyer in charge?”
“It not going to happen. I refuse to give what she wants. She should wait for my lawyer to contact her instead for attempting murder.” Alison holds her tummy with both of her hands as if at any second Aeron shall grab her baby away. He looks surprised at her. She didn't look like she made up her story after all. “Let me know the progress, Sarjan. If I am not available, you can meet my manager. I will give everything I know of through her.” Aeron was about to bark back at her suggestion. “ I’m on maternity leave for my scheduled delivery at the end of this week.”
Aeron nodded understanding and left.
“Are you alright, Dr Ali?” Jules broke into the office worriedly. “Did something happen?” “I’m alright, Jules.” Alison smiled at her. But she looked pale & tiny seeds of perspiration on her temples. Jules takes a seat on the sofa just opposite Alison, watching her with concern. She didn’t take Alison's words when she heard Alison’s loud voice through her office over the hall. She almost ran to her office, but somehow she stopped knowing someone else was there. Something is not right. Alison let out a lazy laugh at her. “Don’t worry about me. I am fine.” Jules didn’t buy it, crossed her arms in protest & stared hard at her like a hawk making her prey let out a defeated sigh. “She found me. I don’t know how but she found me.” Jules grasped what happened and can't h
After Aeron had his meeting with Dr Alison, he began his work. He suspected something amiss about the whole situation. The four years, horrifying tragedy, was closed as a normal accident due to bad weather. But, the last report was not even verified by the last chief in charge. Something does not really add up. The case just closed up for lack of evidence. The accused person, Dr Alison, even went mental for a year before going overseas for rehabilitation. Attempting murder? What the hell is going on? Aeron reached out for his phone to call Dr Alison. But, it went through a voicemail instead. He grabbed his car key and left the office. He needs more information & she hasn't delivered any of the documents yet.
