Stan tried to stop it, but he was too late—Irene had already fallen out of the window.

There was a dull thud, but Isaac coolly told him, "Take her away."

With that, he turned and left the room.

Stan peeked outside the window—it was not exactly high here since it was just the second floor, but anyone falling out from here would still be severely injured.

He felt sympathy for Irene, but his heart was not aching for her.

She was the one who challenged Isaac, and it was her own fault for running away when the world was her oyster.

Everyone had spent months looking for her!

Downstairs, Irene was curling up in agony, with her leg being especially painful. She reached out to touch it, and could tell that there was a broken bone.

Even so, Stan barked at his men to pick her up unceremoniously—even a little violently!

Irene had no strength to resist, allowing herself to be dragged around like a rag doll.

Harvey was left watching helplessly as everything unfolded.

Isaac remained apathetic. "Leave her be."As he headed upstairs, Mrs. Watson breathed a long sigh—she was not about to go against him, even if she felt sad for Irene. Moreover, Irene was the one at fault. How could she run away? Isaac had every reason to be angry.…The months when Irene was missing was an opportunity for Whitney Cox.Even if Isaac was still ignoring her, she still came every day with her homemade food in an attempt to win his favor again—to fulfill her dreams to enter that mansion as the lady of the house. It was the same today, and Mrs. Watson was used to Whitney showing up constantly.Taking the food containers she brought, she told Whitney, "I'm afraid Mr. Jefferson still doesn't want to see you, Ms. Cox. Please leave."Unrelenting, Whitney asked, "Did you say that, or did Isaac?""Mr. Jefferson has told you that on multiple occasions. Why would you still ask?" Mrs. Watson countered, leaving Whitney speechless. It was obvious that Mrs. Watson abhorre

Whitney's face turned pale even as she stammered, "W-Why are you here?!"Glowering, Isaac strode forward and kicked her away! "You lied to me!"Whitney fell like a rag doll, but promptly pushed herself up in panic. "N-No, I wasn't lying…"Isaac had heard everything she said, but she still insisted on lying! The only reason he never punished her was because they shared that night. Now, he just wanted her gone!"Watch her, Mrs. Watson!" he bellowed before leaving to call Stan, telling him to head to the mansion right away to deal with Whitney. After hanging up, he turned to Irene, lying on the floor and looking almost lifeless. Hesitating for a moment, he dropped to crouch beside her, and extended a hand—pausing for a while, he eventually braced himself to touch her cheek, his tone cracking as he gently called, "Irene Spencer…"He never knew that it was her that night—his heart was left pounding violently at the idea!Even so, Irene's vision was blurring and soon darkened.

Irene's heart still pounded with fear as she remembered how that man had pushed her out of the window.Nonetheless, Isaac asked softly, "Irene Spencer, I have a question: were you at Charity Hospital on the sixth of July?"Irene drew a blank, but rasped, "I was working there as a doctor at the time. Isn't it normal for me to be there?"She had no idea why Isaac would talk about that night, but now that Isaac had learned the truth from Whitney, he wanted to double-check just to make sure that there was no mistake this time. "In other words, you were there even though you weren't on duty. You were standing in for Whitney Cox, weren't you?"Irene pursed her lips. "Yes, and I remember that very well because that was supposed to be our wedding night," she admitted. "You weren't at the mansion when I received Whitney's text, saying that she was busy and asking me to take over her shift. I went to the hospital—""And met a wounded man—""How did you know?" Irene narrowed her eyes, cutti

Isaac promptly rushed into Irene's ward, where he found her on the floor beside her bed, her plastered leg sprawled limply on the floor.Frowning as he moved over to help her up, he restrained his temper and asked, "What are you doing? Still trying to run when your foot is in that condition?"Irene shook her head. Right now, she had no strength to run even if her legs were fine. Her chest was swelling from lactation, leaving it utterly numb."I'm just thirsty."It was only then that Isaac noticed that her lips were cracked and bleeding from dryness. Sighing, he mildly said, "I'll get it for you."As she was returned to her bed, Irene was left staring on the ceiling and asking feebly, "Isaac Jefferson… Why can't you just let me go?"Isaac paused. He alone was aware of his feelings for Irene. However, his ego had prevented him from acknowledging that in the past just because she had been with another man, and he constantly kept those feelings repressed. Now, things were d

Isaac glanced at Irene's plastered leg and explained, "My anger got the better of me."That was why he had pushed her out of that window.Irene raised her brow—that was actually his reason to push her, even if she might die?"What if you'd killed me?""From that height? You'd be a cripple at worst," Isaac said, scooping out a spoonful of oatmeal and blowing at it until it was cooled, before finally holding it out to her.Not used to such kindness, Irene was left staring at him. "It's not poison, is it?"It was not as if she was being suspicious—she just could not get a read on his attitude. Isaac was left holding her gaze for seconds. Was he such a terrible villain to her?As such, he pretended to threaten her. "Not yet. I have to keep you alive to torment you."Irene actually felt relieved by that—this was the Isaac Jefferson she knew. With that, she allowed him to feed her, and he patiently did so until she was finished. He then started to scoop a bowl of chicken soup tha

Zachary was not about to give up, but he did not keep pressing Irene because Isaac stopped him. In fact, the look on Isaac's face made it clear that he was not okay with that, as he believed Zachary's presence affected Irene's rest and recovery."Let's step out for a moment," he said.Zachary followed unenthusiastically. Isaac frowned, but held out his phone. "Just because you look pitiful.""Oh, look who's talking!" Zachary did not hesitate to retort. "Don't combat the whole world for Irene when she runs away, then. There are women everywhere and most of them are in love with you, but you're acting like you can't live without her—"His rant quickly stopped before he could finish—he sensed a cold aura. Isaac was about to tell Zachary that the logs on his phone were recoverable even after deletion, but Zachary did not seem to care and exposed his Achilles' heel!He promptly pocketed his phone and coolly said, "You're no gynecologist, so there's no reason for you to come. Now,

Isaac regretted his failure to recognize the right woman, and losing his own children as a result of that. The punishment was so severe that someone as gritty as him had trouble shouldering it!"She lost the other child too. Don't mention children in front of her so that she won't feel hurt." His voice was quiet but carried a hint of raspiness. Zachary sighed—he was not actually surprised. "It's a miracle to keep a twin alive when the other dies. Even if she's worked so hard to protect it, the risk of infection was just too much, and there was no assurance that the abortion surgery did not hurt her womb. Still, it's no loss—I've been telling her from the start not to keep it because she doesn't even know the father. I can't understand what she's thinking, insisting on delivering the baby anyway and raising her as a single mother."Isaac's heart could split right then.Irene did all she could to protect their child even if it risked his ire—her courage and resolve was there for al

Zachary's breaths turned ragged at the sound of the familiar voice. He tried to speak, but his throat was suddenly too dry to do so.On the other end, Lulu thought Irene did not hear her, and called out again. "Irene…?"Allowing himself a moment to steady his breathing, Zachary eventually said, "I'm not Irene."Lulu was stunned, but hung up at the next instant, holding her phone and panicking.Sheryl was watching and could feel her tension, so she asked worriedly, "What's wrong? Is Irene in danger?"She still was not aware that Isaac had taken Irene back to Cloud City, and simply presumed that she was still under Harvey's custody. Lulu could only shake her head."Well, what's wrong—"Before she could finish, Lulu's phone was ringing again. This time, she simply stared at the flashing screen without answering. "Why aren't you answering?" Sheryl asked, puzzled. "It's not Irene," Lulu replied, and left the room. Her phone was still ringing even when she arrived at the balc

Soon after the wedding, Mr. Fowler proposed for Stan to work at his company to get used to the work over there. He was worried as he did not have much time left, and it would not do if he was gone before the proper arrangements were made.Still, Stan returned to Franconia with Isaac and his family, sorting out things at work and finishing every task he had on hand. While Isaac used to have a lot of free time with Stan around, he was just slightly busier after Stan left. After all, no company should operate in a way that losing a single person would stall all their operations. And after a week, Stan sorted out all the remaining tasks he had in Franconia and returned to Zidonia to start work at the Fowlers' family business. While Stan had property in Zidonia too, he moved into the Fowlers' mansion, but not as a live-in son-in-law. He was simply aware of Mr. Fowler's illness, and Rea wanted to spend more time with her parents. And as the son-in-law, he was obliged to do that much.

Zachary said, "I heard you sealed the deal with Rea Fowler, and her family is preparing for your wedding."Stan smiled. "I'm the look of success—getting a girl couldn't be simpler. See? I'm getting married already.""Well, I guess we're all taken now," Erin said.Tommy poked his head up just then. "Congratulations, Uncle Stan.""Thank you." Stan chuckled, patting his head."Also, I heard that you're marrying into the Fowler family?" Zachary asked.Everyone turned to stare at Stan in shock, but it was understandable.Stan was not that modest that he would have to go that far—he had money and was successful enough to afford a wife.Still, Zachary—who knew the Fowlers—suggested, "To be fair, they do need someone to take care of the family business…"-Either way, it meant that Irene's family would be delaying their return trip to Franconia. After all, none of them had expected to attend Stan's wedding so soon after Zachary's.Stan himself did not expect that either, as he had

"What's the problem? We've already slept together," Rea said as she put her clothes on.She frowned as Stan was still on the bed and not moving. "What, are you going to stay in my bed forever?""What am I supposed to wear?" Stan shrugged. "You haven't brought my clothes here.""I'll get it for you."Rea remembered his suitcase then and hurried downstairs to bring it up."Wear whatever you like. I'll be waiting downstairs," she said and hurried away.Stan got out of bed and put on a suit—it was only right to dress formally when it came to discussing marriage. After cleaning up and heading downstairs, he found Rea sandwiched by her parents.Stan had no idea if she had already mentioned it, but both Mr. and Mrs. Fowler were both staring at him, leaving him further tense.Clearing his throat, Stan began, "Excuse me, but—""Yes, we agree to you marrying our daughter.""You mean marrying into our family," Rea corrected them.Everyone else was staring at her before asking all at o

If Rea asked her parents now, they would only get sad, and life would become difficult for everyoneWhat should she do to make them happy?Right, she could get married! Her parents would definitely be pleased. As for the choice of bridegroom, did she not have one readily available here?If Stan could pretend to be her boyfriend, he could definitely be her husband too. They could fake their marriage if they had to!Putting the medical file back where she found it, she wobbled up to her feet and left the room.Stan had yet to step out of the bathroom when she returned, so she sat on the bed and waited. After a while, Stan stepped out with a towel around his waist and paused when he saw Rea sitting there. "Where are my clothes?" He asked, presuming that Rea had forgotten since there was nothing on the bed or the table. "My suitcase is still in your car trunk."Rea turned toward him. Mrs. Fowler smacked her daughter, but while Rea thought she was angry, she said instead, "Just do your best."Rea's mind was blown—were her parents bewitched? They were completely different from before! A long time ago, her parents had used to tell her that she did not have to marry as long as she was happy. But later on, they had persistently sent her on blind dates… and now, they were telling her to seduce a man?Touching her mother's forehead, Rea asked, "Are you sick?"Mrs. Fowler slapped her hand off. "The chauffeur is waiting."Rea walked them to the door and watched as their car left before returning inside. She did not go upstairs since Stan was asleep, and she would be bored—she was the type who just could not sit still. However, it was inappropriate if she left since that would leave nobody home.In her boredom, she thought of pranking Stan. Rea asked.Mrs. Fowler realized with a start and quickly said, "Oh, there's no bedding in the guest room… So let him stay in your room."Rea was left staring at her in shock. "When did you get so open-minded? Letting a man stay in your daughter's room?"Mrs. Fowler shrugged. "What can he do when he's drunk?""Haven't you heard of drunken fumbles?" Rea asked. Both Mr. and Mrs. Fowler shook their heads at the same time. "Nope."Rea was left totally speechless—this was just outrageous! She would think that Stan was actually their son, if it was not for the fact that they were not acquainted before. They were not like this before either—even if they were urging her to get married, they were not throwing her at a man like this!Mr. Fowler then said, "If anything happens, we'll demand that he takes responsibility and marries y

You're going to make things difficult for him."Mr. Fowler smiled awkwardly. "Right…" "You think?" Rea huffed, snatching his wine away. "Everyone only gets to have one glass."Mr. Fowler glared at Rea. Rea turned her head aside. "Then what's your hobby?"Stan did a double take and remembered his life… which was work and more work.It had been years since he took leave, and he would not get to goof off the last few days if it had not been for Zachary's wedding.Hobby? He certainly did not have anything like that. Now that he thought about it, his life was boring and monotonous, and he did not have anyone very close. That was why he wanted a kind, understanding wife to care and offer him company while he took care of her needs. When he looked up at Rea, he clearly felt that she was not for him—he needed someone to take care of him, but with her, he would be busy taking care of her instead."You're looking at me weirdly," Rea suddenly said."How so?" Stan asked.Rea moved closer, looking him in the eyes and asking solemnly, "Don't tell me—you've fallen for me?""You don't just suffer from a flawed personality—you're narcissistic too."Stan pursed his lips and checked the tim
