Chapter 3: A Dance of Flames

I should’ve seen it coming.

The moment I stepped into the training grounds, I knew everything was about to change. I could feel it in the air, thick with the scent of sweat and raw power, the thrum of energy crackling just beneath the surface. The sound of wolves clashing, their bodies slamming against the earth in training, filled the space around me. But none of it mattered. Not when I was staring directly at him.

Lucian Hale.

Alpha. King of the Silvermist Pack. A beast with the power to crush anyone who crossed him, and yet... here he was, watching me like I was the most intriguing thing he’d ever seen.

I can’t be distracted. Not by him, not by anything.

I try to shake it off, focusing on the other candidates. I have to. I need to. but when I glance toward the edge of the arena, his gaze is already on me. It’s like a magnetic force, pulling me in. The intensity of his eyes almost makes my heart stop for a beat.

He’s not just watching me. He’s studying me.

The thought sends a jolt through me, something sharp and unsettling. I force myself to turn my back to him, moving further into the training grounds. I can’t let him get to me. Not now. Not when I’m here for something much bigger than whatever twisted game he’s playing.

I spot one of the other candidates, Mara, her form flawless as she executes a high spin kick, taking down a sparring partner in one fluid motion. I try to pay attention, but all I can feel is Lucian’s presence hovering behind me, like a storm waiting to hit.

“Nice form,” I say, trying to focus.

Mara flashes a smile. “Thanks. But you don’t look so convinced.”

“I’m just here to observe,” I reply, my voice casual, but my words betray me. Even I can hear the tension in them. My hands clench into fists at my sides, and I have to fight the urge to glance over my shoulder again.

“I thought you were a rogue?” Mara says with a raised brow. There’s a challenge in her tone. “Don’t tell me you’re afraid of a little sparring.”

I force a tight-lipped smile. “I’m not afraid. Just... picking my battles.”

She eyes me for a moment, then shrugs, stepping away from the fight. “Suit yourself. But if you want to last in this pack, you’ll have to fight. That’s what we do here.”

I nod, swallowing the lump in my throat. I didn’t come here to play games. But Mara’s right. I’ll need to fight. To prove I belong. To prove I’m not weak.

I square my shoulders and move toward the sparring circle, my eyes catching Lucian once more. This time, I can’t look away.

He’s not participating in the trials. Instead, he’s standing just beyond the circle, his expression unreadable, his posture rigid. But the moment our eyes lock, there’s a shift. A current. As if something deep inside both of us reacts. My breath catches in my throat, and for a second, I wonder if he can feel it too, the invisible bond pulling us together.

A sudden growl of frustration escapes me. I’m not here for him. I can’t afford to be here for him.

But he doesn’t seem to care. His gaze flickers from mine, then to the other candidates. It’s as if he’s waiting for something. Or maybe he’s just... waiting for me.

I push the thought aside, stepping into the sparring ring with another candidate... Caleb. He’s tall, built like a brick wall, with a confident grin plastered on his face. The moment I face him, I feel the shift in the air. He’s a challenge, and I know this won’t be easy.

“Ready to lose?” Caleb smirks, already circling me, his eyes gleaming with arrogance.

I don’t answer. I don’t need to. I’m here to show him, and everyone, that I’m not some rogue who can be taken down easily.

I wait for him to make the first move. And sure enough, he charges, throwing a punch. I sidestep, letting him pass by me. He stumbles, off balance, and before he can right himself, I push him to the ground with a sharp twist of my leg.

He crashes to the floor with a grunt, and for a split second, I almost feel bad for him. Almost.

But then I hear Lucian’s voice.

“Well done,” he says, his tone low, his eyes unwavering as they fix on me.

My breath catches. He’s not supposed to be watching me. He shouldn’t be watching me at all. But here he is, like a shadow lingering just out of reach.

I turn away from him, trying to shake off the feeling that’s crawling up my spine. Focus, Sera. I remind myself again. Focus.

Caleb scrambles to his feet, glaring at me. “You got lucky.”

“Don’t mistake skill for luck,” I reply, my voice clipped.

His lips curl in a sneer, but he steps back, his eyes narrowing. “We’ll see how long that skill lasts when the real fight begins.”

I don’t respond, not because I don’t have words, but because I’m already moving. I don’t have time for his petty threats. Not when Lucian is still staring at me like I’m the only thing that matters in this entire arena.

I keep my eyes forward, refusing to look at him again. But that doesn’t stop the heat from rising in my chest.

I walk out of the ring, ignoring the whispers from the other candidates. They’re all watching me, sizing me up. But it’s Lucian’s eyes that I can feel on my back. They burn through me, and no matter how much I try to push it down, I can’t ignore the way my heart speeds up every time I meet his gaze.

I need to get out of here. I need to breathe. The walls are closing in on me, the weight of his presence too much.

I make my way toward the exit, but then I hear his voice again, this time closer.

“Sera.”

It’s barely a whisper, but it’s enough to make me freeze in my tracks.

I don’t turn around.

“I’m not interested, Lucian,” I say, my voice shaky, betraying the words I’m trying to force out. I want to sound strong. I want to sound confident. But it’s hard when all I can feel is him. His power, his dominance, his presence.

He doesn’t move closer, but I can hear him. I can feel the weight of his stare.

“I never said you were,” he replies, and his voice is so calm, so sure, it sends a shiver down my spine. “But I am curious... What’s your real reason for being here?”

My jaw tightens, but I don’t turn around. Not yet. “I’m here to fight,” I say, trying to sound unwavering.

He’s silent for a moment. Then, his voice, low and dangerous, reaches me again.

“We’ll see about that, Sera.”

And with that, I know. I’m in deeper than I ever thought.
