SHADOW
“No!” I woke up, jolting with my body soaked with sweat, my chest heaving as I caught my breath. I never had a dream in a long time, and I didn’t wish to be that taunting and vicious as I watched everyone die, get murdered, and pile like dead animals ready to get burned.
I was wrong when I thought I would get a good sleep. With my impending challenge approaching, I needed a clear head, or I would lose control and hurt my opponent. I couldn’t and wouldn’t be that person anymore.
With everyone having eyes on me with my every move, I had to prove to them that I was not that kind of rogue in their heads, but I had a feeling that this wouldn’t be easy for me.
It was still three in the morning. Everyone was probably still in bed. I checked the door before I slept last night, and it wasn’t locked like I initially thought. I changed into a hoodie and sweatpants before I headed down. It had been almost a week, and I hadn’t run. The night I wanted to go out, it didn’t go well.
I walked to the north. My nose in human form wasn’t like in my wolf form. I couldn’t smell threats, but I always trusted my instinct. As I reached through the tall trees, I stripped off my clothes.
I remembered my first turn. It was brutally and excruciatingly painful. I had no one to guide me than Kent, but he was there for me, patiently waiting for my complete transformation. It was worth the pain, and my wolf came to life.
I shifted to my four-legged white wolf and stomped her paws in glee. I felt more free in a wolf form. I jumped over the log, and the sound of my paws patting against the earth gave me the freedom to do a good run. The familiar whistling of wind rushed through my fur.
For the first time I was out of Kent’s property, I didn’t have to worry about being caught by my kind. As I ran deep into the woods, I found a cliff. My paws dragged against the rocky end.
That was close.
I smelled different werewolf scents, but those were Night Stalker pack members and one distinct, familiar scent. I sat on four, watching the silver glow of the moon washing against the river that separated from the tall trees.
I stayed there for a couple more minutes, thanking the moon goddess before I ran back.
I caught a scent behind the big tree where I hid my clothes. I quickly shifted back and put my clothes on.
“You can’t run alone like that. You’re not yet properly introduced to the pack. They could have ripped you off and thought you were an intruder.”
“Let them try.” I gulped when my skin tingled as his scent became more prominent, and I heard his footsteps getting closer.
“That’s an order, Shadow.”
“How did you find me?” Quickly, I shut my mouth to question the Alpha.
Not liking my answer, a growl rumbled from his chest.
“Sorry.”
“Let’s head back.”
Taking a step forward, I finally showed my face. He was still wearing a deep scowl on his face.
It was a good run, though, worth a try without getting back on that hellhole. Califf was only wearing sweatpants and a shirt, but it had my wolf going crazy inside.
“I was about to go back, anyway.” I slipped and formed my hands into fists in the hoodie’s pockets. His presence and our proximity had my body going bold, losing control of my wolf’s desire. I had to draw a deep breath before I could jump on him.
“Why are you up so early?”
“I could ask the same thing.” I quickly shut my mouth.
Another groan came out from him but without a word.
“Look, Alpha. I’m still adjusting to the whole thing. I’m used to being alone, but I’ll try to be a good rogue around here. I don’t want trouble.”
“You’re still talking and not answering my question.”
I released a tired sigh. “I had a bad dream and haven’t had it in a long time.”
“What was it all about?” For real? He wanted to know my dream. What if it was wild and something naughty?
“I can’t tell you.” I pressed my lips into a thin line.
“Was that something naughty?” I could feel a smirk in his voice.
“I wish it were, but no. In fact, it was bloody and terrifying. I can still feel the dread crawling in my skin.”
“It was just a bad dream. Maybe you overthink before you slept last night.”
We reached the compound gate. The pack house was like a fortress in the middle of the forest. The entire place was still silent, just our footsteps echoing at the entrance.
I followed where he went and remembered it was led to the vast kitchen.
“Cook something.” He sat on the chair in front of the kitchen island.
“Um. What do you like?”
“Just breakfast, and I want coffee.”
Well, this would be the first payment to my debt. I drew a deep breath before scanning the cupboards, drawers, and fridge to familiarize myself with what was in it.
I started by scooping the ground coffee and filling the coffee maker. I poured water and turned it on. Then I went to the fridge and grabbed a few eggs, butter, fresh fruits, and milk. Then, I grabbed a bag of flour for the pancake.
“Any allergies that I should know about?” I took out a bulb of scallions.
“I’m sure you won’t find any in the kitchen.”
“I was not trying to poison you.”
“I know,” he said with disinterest. And he looked like he wanted to be elsewhere than here, yet he was still sitting.
“Tell me about the challenge. I want to prepare myself. How difficult is it?” I began by making my batter in a large mixing bowl. I knew the werewolf appetite, and we were also lucky to have a fast metabolism that wouldn’t make us the size of an elephant.
“You will have a combat fight with the chosen member. Preferably the opposite sex.”
I stared at him in disbelief. “What? That’s unfair. I don’t have the training your men have. And they are stronger than me because I am a rogue, obviously.” While waiting for the pancake maker to heat, I cracked some eggs into the bowl.
“You want to prove you have a place in my pack? Then fight for that place. Prove it to me and them that you deserve to be here, rogue.”
He didn’t have any idea what damage I could do to my opponent if I lost control, and that was what I was afraid of.
I poured a batter into the pancake maker, ignoring the apprehension in my head. I grabbed a pack of bacon from the fridge and placed it on a separate pan.
“Looks like Kent didn’t spoil you at all.” So he’d been watching me scramble in his impressive kitchen, but he never offered to help. What was I expecting? He was the Alpha, and I was rogue, ending up his omega if I failed the challenge.
“No. He didn’t. After his divorce, he wanted me back in his home. So I cooked breakfast and dinner for us.” I whisked the egg and sprinkled some salt and pepper. I poured a little amount of milk into it. “Did you know about Kent harboring a rogue before we met?”
“Yeah. That was the meeting all about,” he answered without hesitation.
“Did he know?” I looked at him.
“Not until I asked.”
“So that meeting was a setup?”
“I don’t know who you were. I just saw your picture sent to me.”
“What were you gonna do if we met that day?”
“The same thing I did.” His direct answer made my nose flare, and he saw that.
I was done with half of the pancake. I stacked it on the plate before I made a mean omelet. I chopped some scallions for the garnishing because I had to impress my Alpha that I was not a burden rogue, but I could do some help in his pack.
Once, I plated the Alpha’s breakfast and poured him a coffee in a big mug. I grabbed a cutlery and set the table before placing breakfast before him.
I prepared for myself since I was also starving after the run. Once I cleaned up my mess, I began digging my breakfast. I was halfway to my meal, but I hadn’t heard any comments about my inexpert cooking experience. But he was eating silently, and he hadn’t collapsed from his seat if I happened to poison the Alpha.
Once he was done, he stood up, and I watched him leave without a word, but his plate was empty. After I cleaned up the kitchen spotless, I went to my room and took a shower. I missed my old clothes, though. There was nothing much choices to pick on. At the same time, I was glad he didn’t leave me naked or put me in a cage somewhere in his territory to be mauled by his enemy.
I looked outside through the window and found teens and pups probably going to school. I went downstairs and found a few pairs of eyes pinned down at me. I didn’t know what to do or say, so I chose to ignore their scrutinizing eyes.
“Hey, rogue. Learn to show some respect to the ranking members if you wanna stay,” said the blond guy around my age.
“Too bad. You just said I’m a rogue, and I don’t know any of you except for Alpha Califf and Beta Duke.”
Before I could turn my back, I was already pressed against the wall, knocking out the air in my lungs, almost crashing my windpipe. I didn’t flinch. Instead, I met his blazing dark eyes. He was an enforcer, and I could smell his rage seeping through him.
Growling, I snarled, “Is this supposed to impress me, scare the shit out of me because you are fast?” He was already distracted. I did a head butt that caught him off guard. It wasn’t even strong. His head snapped back, giving me a chance to knee him in the forbidden area.
I left, heading to the Alpha’s office, and didn’t look back.
Before I could take another step, I froze in my place as I met the angrier Alpha, glaring his frosty gray eyes at me. If an icy stare could kill, I was dead cold.
CALIFF I heard and saw everything. I was supposed to be impressed that she could take care of herself, but she was showing off to my people, which was not a good impression on her part. And Shadow wasn’t a member yet, but she was already showing the dark side in her. “In my office. Now!” She dropped her gaze. Without a word, she walked past me to my office. “Zack, you too.” I gestured my finger. “But, Alpha. I was merely reminding her of her place.” “That is not your job and decision, and cornering a woman in front of everyone isn’t right. Get the fuck in my office.” I was mad at what he did. Something snapped deep inside me, wanting to crash his skull, and showed everyone what I would do if someone touched Shadow again. When Zack went to my office, I looked at everyone who didn’t meet my gaze anymore. “She’s a rogue, and I get it. This is not her territory, but she will take a challenge, like everyone wishes to join our pack, to prove she has a place here. Give her a chance,
SHADOW Goddess, these people hated me to the core. Thankfully, this was the last day of my punishment, and I was already dreaming of a long nap in my bed. On the other hand, a three-day punishment in solitary was probably the best choice after all. “Here, rogue.” A buzz-cut teenager smirked and just gave me the plate. Before I could take it, he poured what was left of his food on the floor. So I had to mop the kitchen floor, adding to an hour of my time. I sighed and hid my anger and disappointment. “Serves you right. Next time, learn to respect who’s a higher rank than you.” That was just the first bully. Three bullies had done the same thing every meal since three days ago, but this one and the other were worse. Apparently, they admired Zack, hence the bullying and giving me a hard time. The cooks, not so much. They even helped me by cleaning utensils before they left, but these kids, Goddess, I wanted to ring their necks and squeeze them until their throats cracked around my
SHADOW What if this is a test from the Alpha? I wished I could read minds. I wanted to know what Zack was after. “I think you just want to live a normal life in the human world without thinking of threats from another pack. And I know why you’re here. I heard about your father—” “Adopted father,” I corrected him. “Yeah. Kent Marks. Because he could be a target of those assholes again, you want Alpha Cal’s protection, which is a smart decision, by the way. And honestly, you still have to join a pack one way or another. You can’t be out there for the rest of your life. That’s our nature. That’s who we are. We’re stronger together.” “I thought for a moment, you’re advertising a roof sealant.” He laughed. And I laughed for the first time since I stayed here a week ago. My voice was even foreign to me. “It sells, right?” “Yeah. Best-seller roof sealant in the country.” After an hour, we were done moping the floor. “See?” He gestured his hands, showing me the clean and shiny kitc
CALIFF Since I dodged Everlee’s phone call, I didn’t have any idea she would come knocking on my door early in the morning. I could be rude and ruthless, but I also wanted to address that I wanted to end whatever relationship we had formally. I had a feeling things would not end well for me if I kept allowing my sexual exploit with Everlee to stay longer. We were not mates. She understood that. I had a need, but I also had obligations to my pack and my mate. That was my top priority. After our short talk, she finally left my room willingly. I also made a point to avoid paying me a visit to my house. I sighed as soon as the door shut after her, but I was barged in with a familiar scent that made my wolf almost cheer and howl at the same time. I quickly pulled the door open and found Shadow in front of her door—the stench of another man’s smell on her brought out the possessive, animalistic temperament in me. Before I could compose myself, I was already growling at her. “Why the f
SHADOW “Zack, what are you doing here?” I was surprised to see him in the parking lot. “I’m the designated driver for today,” he excitedly said before he went to the driver’s seat to start the car. “Oh.” I suddenly felt shy. Zack was a good guy, after all, but I didn’t want him and everyone to get the idea that their Alpha was giving me privileges. They hated me already, and I was afraid I would end up poisoned by my haters. I was literally an outcast who just jumped into an assistant to the Alpha. The number one those gossipers could ever think was that I was in bed with the leader of the pack. Just like right now, these female werewolves were shooting me daggers. “I think I’d rather work in the office,” I told the Alpha as he finished his phone call. “Don’t make it a habit of defying my orders, Shadow. And don’t make me repeat myself. If I say you’re joining, you’re joining me.” I gulped as I nodded, and that was when he noticed the reason for my discomfort. With just a singl
CALIFF “Are you sure she’s ready for this?” Kindra asked. “It wouldn’t be fair for everyone if she will be given a long time to prepare,” Duke answered his mate, sitting next to him. The pack started filling the bench before the football field, where the challenge would begin in a few minutes. Was I worried that she wouldn’t win the challenge? No. I would be more worried for her opponent that Lyon would pick a name that Shadow was challenging. I had confidence in her, and so did the enforcer. “This is gonna be fun.” “I’m worried, Cal. She’s been a rogue for a long time, and two days training with Zack is nothing compared to our enforcers who have trained since they were pups.” “We’ll see.” “What if she won't win?” I looked at Kindra as she began tapping her knees. “She will be omega like everyone else.” “And that is okay with you?” Duke asked. “Yeah. Fair is fair.” “I thought you two have a thing. I heard you went to the city to buy her clothes.” “Because she doesn’t have
SHADOW I ran away. I thought I had it under control. I felt ashamed of myself that I almost killed Tor in front of everyone, and I just proved them right, showing them my true nature that I was nothing but a savage and filthy rogue in their eyes. I lost my only chance. I ended up threatening the guard if he wouldn’t let me enter the confinement. I wanted to be alone right now because I knew my days were over. I would be banished, or worse, they would kill me if Tor wouldn’t heal. My wolf took control when I was threatened, and she felt my pain. I cried in the corner of the room. I was supposed to have a pack now if I only control myself. I missed Kent. I wished he was here right now, telling me everything would be okay. “Go away. I need to be alone.” When the door unlocked, I wiped my tears from my face. I smelled the sweetest lavender wafting in the room instead. “May I come in?” I thought I heard that voice before. I lifted my gaze. “Oh, my Goddess. Luna.” I rose to my fee
CALIFF I watched Shadow writhe in bed. She was probably dreaming about intense sex. She grasped the bed sheet, gripping it tight as she bucked her hips, and her head threw against the pillow, exposing her neck. As her chest rose and fell, her lip caught between her teeth, and then she moaned. Her thighs pressed together and spread them apart, seeking friction. A low growl erupted from my chest, thinking she was dreaming of sex with another man. However, I could have made her dream come true if I hadn’t controlled my wolf. I groaned as the scent of her arousal grew strong enough to make my dick harden in my jeans, but my mind warned me to proceed with caution. My pulse raced as my body responded to her motion. And no woman had ever affected me this way, even women who flirted and seduced me to get to bed with them. What I had with Everlee was nothing but sex, but something with Shadow that made me crave her, even if I hadn’t tasted her. And her smell was so addicting and alluring,
CALIFF Three months later I’d never been nervous like this in my entire life— it was a mix of excitement and nervousness, if I was being honest. Standing beside me was my Beta, my best man. Who would be perfect to sand by my side on my wedding day anyway? If not Duke, who would fit for the position? In Moon Goddess’s name, Shadow and I were already bonded forever. In the human world, we became husband and wife, a legally married couple. My heart kept thumping when the music started, and then she appeared with her father and Kent. Her ivory lace wedding gown hugged her body perfectly. Her face was covered with a veil. Shadow was always beautiful in my eyes, and she already looked ethereal, like a true goddess in human form. “Shadow.” I couldn’t take my eyes off her. Today, this union was special for both of us, for our families, and our pack. Our allies, including the new Alpha of Midnight Storm, Alpha Grady, were also present. Of course, the union wouldn’t be complete without th
CALIFF “Wow.” Shadow’s eyes widened to see half of the pack was on the field where we last had an interrupted picnic date. “When I said a barbecue, I expected something like a backyard barbecue, but this is beyond. Awesome.” A whole cow was already on the fire, patties, sausages, and veggies on the grills, stuck buns on the table, bowls of salad, delis, coolers of beers and other beverages, and tables put together into one long table with flower arrangements. It was like an outdoor cooking show, minus the camera. Families, guys, girls, pups, and even witches were here. It was a picnic party. I didn’t even know what to call it. What I saw was a pack having a picnic because threats were over, and hopefully, it would last for a long, long time. “Welcome to the pack picnic, Shadow.” She chuckled and shook her head. “You didn’t steal a cow from our neighbor, did you, Zack?” “I’m afraid I don’t know what you’re talking about, Luna.” Zack placed chairs for us. “The owner will skew you
SHADOW “Oh,” they gushed as I showed them the massive stone on my engagement ring. “Oh, my goodness.” Aira’s tiny eyes grew big. “What a huge rock from a huge man with a huge—” “Don’t.” Zarah pressed a finger on Aira’s lips. “Oh, yeah. Their hearing.” “You deserve it, Shadow.” Kindra inspected the ring, and it glittered in the sun. The pool was calling me, but they enjoyed gossip more than getting wet in the pool. “When is the wedding? I want to make sure I have a pretty dress,” Zarah said excitedly. “I don’t know. We haven’t talked about the specific date.” “Because last night you two were busy. You ignored Zarah’s call.” I pressed my lips together because I was guilty. After the proposal, we booked a honeymoon suite, got ourselves naked in the tub with rose petals and amazing scented candles, then we fucked in there, on the bed, and when we woke up, he ate me on the table. I didn’t know how I still had strength left or how many orgasms I lost count of. “Shadow.” Aira snap
CALIFF“Your dad knew that you were not his, but he loved you like his own till his last breath,” Alexander, her grandfather, said.“How did you know?”“He came to me, blaming Sebastien. They fought on that ground. He almost killed your father. Maybe at that time, Sebastien surrendered and admitted his mistake. I never saw your father again, but his body was brought to me.”“Why Sebastien doesn’t have a family or children?”“He believes his mate was your mother, considering she was mated to his twin. He has this belief that the goddess gave them one mate to share, but your dad didn’t think that way. His rage had taken him to do what he did. And here you are.”“How did they meet?” Shadow was so engrossed with the story of her parents from his grandfather that she forgot she had a date today.“They met here in Italy. Sebastien saw her first, but Samuel had the courage to approach her. Sebastien has been like this— focused, workaholic, uptight, but your dad was the opposite because he kn
SHADOW I was surprised to find out that the modern house of the High Priestess was in London. I was expecting a stone house exterior, but what surprised me more was that she was the same age as Zarah. “Welcome to my humble home, Shadow.” “High Priestess.” “Oh, please.” She swatted her well-manicured fingernails, and the white high-neck dress looked perfect on her. “Just Margaret.” “My mate, Alpha Califf.” “Of course, the werewolf. I could smell the skepticism in you, Califf.” “Forgive me, Margaret. I haven’t been in a witch house before.” “It’s not the real reason, but because you haven’t seen what I am capable of. And your future father-in-law just arrived.” "A future father-in-law?” How did she know? Califf and I shared a look. Just like that, my father walked into the living room in a white suit and tie. “High Priestess.” “Alpha King Sebastien.” They kissed each other cheek, but the way my father put his hand on her back said something else. Califf and I shared a look a
CALIFF “Is this really happening?” The perks of the pack link. Our parents didn’t have to hear what we were saying. Most of us were lucky enough to have shared this dinner, but some who were not didn’t make it tonight. Watching my parents at the same table with Sebastien was still pinch-worthy. He would have almost ripped my father’s throat if Shadow didn’t intervene. Seeing them in a light conversation over dinner was still like a dream. “Excuse me. I hope you all don’t mind if I go ahead and check those in the infirmary, still healing.” Shadow rose from her seat. She barely touched her food. I wasn’t worried about her because we all had been through a lot. We lost a few but still lost members, no matter the number. And it still hurt. “Of course, Luna,” my mother said. Dad nodded. “Please, father. May I excuse?” “Go ahead.” His gaze shifted to me when I also stood up. “I’m joining Shadow.” “I know how you feel. Losing a pack member is like losing a part of you. I’ll stay he
SHADOW My hands shook as I tried to clean off the blood. The crimson water dropped, draining into the sink— it was Zack’s blood. I almost lost a good man today. Zack was my best friend. Despite how we got off the wrong foot, he helped me through tough shits. He was among a few who believed in me and that there was something good in me, even if I was a rogue. I put another soap on my hands to get rid of the blood stain. It wouldn’t just go. I wanted to forget he was hurt even if the witches said he would make it, but it still hurt. If only the witches weren’t there, I would have lost him. I felt Califf came into the room. A moment later, he appeared at the bathroom door but said nothing, gazing at what I was doing. I washed my face if even he already saw my tears. He could feel and get into my thoughts but chose to give me space. “Where’s everyone?” I asked, diverting my thoughts. He lost men today. I knew how it felt, but he was stronger than most Alphas. Instead of killing those
CALIFF I was surrounded by growling, snarling, whimpering, but that asshole just waited there like a coward to finish off what his men started. That was not what a character of an Alpha. Clearly, he wasn’t one. Prowling in his direction, I bared my teeth and zeroed my attention only to him. I wanted to put an end to this. If he thought he would win in this attack, he was mistaken. He didn’t move, he just stood there watching my movement, making his point of dominance and intimidation. When I was close enough, he rushed toward me, ending us slamming on the ground. His anger filled his eyes, but he also underestimated my strength since I had already fought and killed a few of his wolves. Our claws and teeth lashed. I snarled as his claws raked through my shoulder, and damn, it fucking hurt. Overpowered by his little victory, I bit his leg, yanking it hard, finding himself slammed on the ground. Keane’s wolf rose to his paws, circling me, growling in anger, following my movements, a
SHADOWJust after those explosions, I instantly felt everyone’s fear thickened in the air, probably mine too. I wasn’t used to fighting with other wolves to death, but those explosions and the packs of werewolves walking into the compound left me no choice but to defend ourselves.“They’re here.” Just as I announced, the enforcers shifted to their wolves, leaving me and Califf, Duke, and Lyon still standing in human form.As we marched, the two guards opened the gate for us, taking the fight outside. Our remaining six enforcers followed behind us while Lyon and Duke were on our sides.Close to the trees, I caught sight of at least four vehicles parked with large numbers of members standing tall beside Keane, crossing his arms over his chest and showing us what he got.“He’s trying to intimidate us.” I couldn’t help but snort at the ridiculousness of the number of shifters he brought with him against us.“Ten against thirty or forty? I like the odds,” Califf said. His body vibrated wit
