The following morning, Alinta woke up early to the sound of her mother singing as she carried a cup of freshly brewed coffee.
"Happy birthday, my baby," her mother sang, pulling Alinta into a tight hug. Her mother was beautiful, with raven black hair and striking green eyes, just like her daughter. "Today is the day the Moon blesses you with your wolf, Lara, and I can't wait to meet her." She hummed and kissed Alinta on the forehead. "I wanted to spoil you with a special breakfast, but since Bellinor has gotten to you first with his invitation, I guess you'll have to settle for some coffee instead," she winked.
"Mom, no matter what you make or give me, it's always the best," Alinta giggled, enjoying the warmth of her mother's embrace.
"Oh, my baby, I wish I could give you the world—that’s how precious you are to me. When you get home, we can go to the river as promised and run with our wolves."
"I'm so excited!" Alinta exclaimed, eagerly trying to call for her wolf, but there was no response. Her smile shrank slightly, and her mother noticed.
"Linty, your wolf will come at the right time, so don't worry if she’s not here yet. They say if a wolf arrives late, it’s because the Moon is making her extra special," her mother said while combing Alinta's messy hair out of her daughter's eyes. "And you baby girl are extra special."
"Thanks, Mom..." Alinta was interrupted by the sound of an approaching car outside.
"That’s probably Bellinor’s driver. Now I’ll let you get ready," her mother said, giving her a final kiss on the forehead before letting go.
Alinta quickly dressed in a beautiful yellow summer dress with small floral patterns. She wore her long locks of hair down, bouncing over her shoulders, and applied soft pink lipstick, eyeliner, and mascara. Rushing out of her room, she greeted her mom as she headed for the front door. Opening it, she found Bellinor’s driver patiently waiting with a broad smile.
"Good morning, Miss Alinta, and happy birthday," he said with a bow, then opened the back passenger door for her.
"Good morning, Henry, thank you so much," she replied gratefully as she climbed in.
The drive was mostly silent until Henry asked, "Have you finally met your wolf, Miss Alinta?"
"No, not yet, but the day is still young, so fingers crossed," she replied with a beaming contagious smile. The drive took about ten minutes before they arrived at Sage and Salt, a very popular restaurant in the area.
As Alinta entered the restaurant, she noticed it was unusually empty for a Saturday morning, especially at this location. While scanning for Bellinor, she suddenly felt large, strong arms wrap tightly around her from behind. Startled at first, she relaxed as she recognized the familiar cologne. Bellinor pulled her close to his chest and whispered tenderly, "Happy birthday, my dear Alinta." He then kissed her cheek and playfully twirled her around to face him.
"Thank you, Mr. Crassus," Alinta replied, still recovering from her surprise. She laughed nervously, almost not recognizing the man before her; he seemed remarkably different, fancifully dressed compared to usual. His cologne was potent, his hair was styled with glossy wax, and even his moustache was neatly groomed.
Bellinor chuckled, clearly satisfied as he gazed deeply into her wondering eyes. "I have plenty more surprises lined up for you, my darling. Come, let us sit—I have reserved a special table where we can enjoy each other's company without interruption."
As Bellinor eagerly escorted Alinta, she was astonished by the sight before her. The whole table and surrounding area were decorated with turquoise and silver balloons, flowers, and various decorative items. It looked more like an esteemed venue than a restaurant. Alinta gasped, her hands covering her face as she tried to contain her grateful tears.
"This is beautiful," Alinta said, her voice trembling.
Not taking his eyes off her, Bellinor smiled widely and gently urged, "Shall we take a seat, my dear?" He then carefully guided her to the table before she could answer.
A waitress with a small notepad approached the table, her expression annoyed, but she spoke with a forced smile. "Good morning, Mr. Crassus, and happy birthday, Alinta. What can I get for you on this special day?"
Before Alinta could respond, Bellinor quickly interjected, "Just so that you don't choose something dull. I have requested a custom-made menu card featuring only the best dishes for you to choose from." He grinned.
Feeling shy and somewhat overwhelmed, Alinta thought it was very sweet of Bellinor but also a bit excessive for the day. Surely her birthday wasn’t as special as he was making it out to be. After all, all werewolves at her age meet their wolf. "Thank you, Mr. Crassus," she said timidly as she took the menu.
Bellinor gazed at Alinta dotingly and asked, "What would you like to drink, my dear?"
After a moment's thought, she replied shyly, "I'll have a latte, please."
The large man smiled and then turned his attention back to the waitress, who appeared visibly irritated. "Margaret, why don't you be a dear and bring us two long caffe lattes for now? By the time you return, we should have our orders ready for you." She nodded and disappeared into the kitchen. Alinta felt a wave of relief wash over her when the waitress left, grateful for a moment of calm as she prepared for what the day might bring. Margaret had always been her greatest oppressor during school, so Alinta was uncertain about what might happen next.
As Alinta stared at the menu, unsure of what to select, Bellinor’s gaze remained fixed on her. Despite her minimal makeup, she was undeniably captivating, just like her mother. Her red hair and pink lips ignited his imagination, and her green eyes sparkled like rare jewels meant to be admired for days.
"My, my, you have truly become more radiant with each passing year, my darling," he purred, shifting closer to her.
Alinta looked up from the menu, her cheeks flushed with surprise. "Thank you, Mr. Crassus," she replied, her voice slightly stifled as she cleared her throat, uncertain of what else to say.
His eyes darkened, and his voice took on a husky tone, indicating his wolf was surfacing. "Only you hold a special place in our hearts. You believe us, don’t you?" He snaked his long arm around her. Alinta stiffened, her eyes wide with disbelief at the man next to her. He let out a small, knowing laugh and continued to draw her in as his expression returned to normal.
Before Alinta could respond, Margaret returned with the lattes and set them on the table. "Are you ready to order?" she asked impatiently, clearly jealous of the attention Alinta was receiving.
Not taking his eyes off Alinta, Bellinor asked in a tender, loving voice, "What does my birthday girl desire, hmm?"
Frantically looking at the menu again, she stammered, "I...I will have the yoghurt parfait, please."
"Okay, and you, Mr. Crassus?" Margaret asked vexed.
"I am quite famished. I shall order the Millionaire's Breakfast. The strip of steak on top of a roasted oyster and eggs sounds quite delightful," he laughed while squeezing Alinta's shoulder.
"One Millionaire breakfast. How do you want your eggs and steak?"
"Sunny side up and rare, please," replied Bellinor, content. Margaret made a final note and then walked off. He waited until the waitress was gone but kept his eyes on Alinta. He leaned closer to her, breathing in her fragrance, which smelled like Frangipani.
"Onyx and I have been waiting patiently for this day, my dear," he whispered in her ear as he gently placed a small gift bag on her lap. "Happy birthday, my darling," he said, then kissed her temple.
"Th... thank you, Mr. Crassus, but you shouldn't have. What you organised is already too much," Alinta squeaked while looking at the extravagant gift bag.
"Nonsense," Bellinor chortled. "You deserve only the best. Now go on, open it." Alinta timidly opened the small bag. Her face paled, and she started to tremble as she pulled out a small red velvet box. A satisfactory grin spread across Bellinor's lips, exposing his sharp teeth. "Oh my darling, you cannot even fathom what I have in store for you," he breathed in her ear before placing another kiss on the side of her head.
Alinta cautiously opened the box, trying to maintain a brave facade, but her lowered and knotted eyebrows betrayed her as its contents were revealed. No, no, no, this can't be real! Alinta cried frantically in her thoughts. Inside rested a lavish engagement five-carat grand vintage trilogy ring with diamond accents fitted all around the platinum band. The thought of marrying Bellinor sent unsettling shivers down her spine, and her heart raced fearfully in her chest. Bellinor noticed the look of dread on her face and became angry, feeling offended by her reaction.
"Does the thought of me as your husband disgust you so much that you visibly turn your nose up at me?" he hissed bitterly, tightening his hold around her, afraid she might bolt at any moment.
"Oh no! Mr. Crassus, please, it's not like that at all! It's just... all these years... I um... thought of you as... as... uh..." She stopped, looking too embarrassed to continue.
Intrigued, Bellinor's anger slightly subsided, as he saw her blushing cheeks. "Think of me as what, my dear?"
Alinta swallowed her embarrassment as her expression softened, then said in almost a whisper, "A father."
Bellinor released Alinta to cover his mouth as he coughed uncomfortably, trying to get his thoughts together. Her words were completely unexpected. Though determined to change her perspective of him, Bellinor slips his free hand under her jaw to cup the side of her face, making her look at him."My dear, please rather see me as your beloved protector, for my feelings for you are so much more. If ever I wanted to be a father it would only be of our future pups," he whispered sensually close to her ear."Oh my!" Alinta reddened uncomfortably, then continued, "Um...but I first would like to find my true..." Bellinor silenced her as he kissed Alinta. She tried to retreat from his hold, but he tightened his grip. Hoping to sway her mind, believing she would melt in his arms by his touch. Alinta gasped through her nose in surprise. Instead of a quick peck, Bellinor snaked another hand behind her head, holding her in place, pressing himself against her soft lips, praying the kiss would trans
“Earth to Alinta! You’re next in the queue,” Angela called out.“Oh, sorry! Thanks, Ange,” Alinta replied as she snapped out of her thoughts and quickly shifted her attention to the cashier.“Hey, don’t let that jerk scare you. He’s not going to ruin our holiday,” Angela said once Alinta finished paying for her items.Alinta glanced at her phone and sighed. “We have twenty-five minutes left. What are we going to do now?” she asked reluctantly as she approached the exit.Angela looked around, trying to see through Alinta's eyes. “I don’t see him anywhere. Where do we need to go for our bus?”Alinta checked the name of the bus company. “It’s called Grey Hare.” She then stared at the long building with different entrances, each window displaying the corresponding company name, but she couldn’t see their bus brand."Guess we have no choice, but to leave the safety of the shop," Alinta sighed and quickly walked down the sidewalk, which felt like a long trek.“Dang, who knew there were so m
Alinta was so excited. She had just boarded the plane and found her seat. It had been an hour and a half since she ran from the silver-haired stranger, and Angela had been awfully quiet. This usually happened when Angela was genuinely pissed off.“Ange, are you angry with me?” Alinta asked, worried. She waited for a response, but there was none. Alinta felt regret wash over her as a pit of unease settled in her stomach. She never wanted to upset her best friend, but she had her reasons. It was just too absurd; no werewolf in history had ever had a second-chance mate. Why now? Why right before their birthday? Was it because Eddison finally rejected her? That would explain the timing, but still... he shouldn't exist. Did the Moon finally realise he had made a mistake, just like he had with the imperfect lesser deity?“Geez, your thoughts are so loud!” Angela giggled like a little girl.“Ange! Are you okay?” Alinta asked anxiously.“Yeah. Why do you sound so stressed?” Angela replied, co
Alinta eagerly gazed at the earth below her as the plane descended. The buildings grew larger as they got closer. "I can see the landing strip!" she exclaimed, animated like a young child. Angela, her wolf, was just as thrilled, experiencing the moment through Alinta’s eyes.Dacian let out a small chuckle and said, "Get yourself ready. Once the wheels make contact with the ground, it can be a bit intense for a first-timer.""Thanks," Alinta replied excitedly. "I can't wait to get off this plane and relax in a normal room," she sighed tiredly, fidgeting with her hands."Yeah, it was nice of Helen to book us a hotel close to the airport for the night," Angela hummed."That woman thought of everything. I don't know how I will pay her back," Alinta said with a sigh."We will find a way, don't you worry." Alinta nodded at her wolf's reassurance, her mind racing through possible solutions."Your wolf must be excited; you look so happy and lost in thought," Dacian said humorously, observing h
Alinta made her way to the elevator. As the doors closed, she glanced behind her and saw the man from the restaurant earlier. He looked like the living dead; his skin was grey with a purplish undertone, and his wide-open eyes stared intensely at her. Alinta felt a surge of fear at his presence, but when she noticed blood running from his nose, she asked, concerned, "Hey, are you okay, sir?"The man continued to gaze at her with a vehement look and took a step forward. "You are breathtaking," he said in a deranged whisper."You're bleeding from your nose; you need medical attention," Alinta replied, backing away slightly. The man kept his gaze fixed on her as if trying to bore holes through her with his eyes. Alinta turned her attention back to the elevator numbers, which had only reached the fifth floor."What colour is your wolf?" he asked, his breath strained."She is red, just like your entire chest and the floor covered in your blood. Please, let me take you to someone who can hel
"Ange!" Alinta shouted as she saw her wolf lying on her side in the dirt, whimpering and her muscles twitching from pain. Alinta rushed to Angela's unresponsive body and pulled her head to her lap as she assessed her injuries, but there were none visible. Angela's stiffening body is not a good sign and Alinta became frightened.“Ange, please tell me what is wrong!” Alinta cried, panic gripping her heart. “Why couldn’t I sense you or feel your pain? What did that man do to you? Did you catch his disease when you bit him?” Tears streamed down her face as she cradled her large wolf, who seemed to quiet her whimpers. Yet, her breathing quickened, as if she were struggling to get oxygen. “Angela, please! What can I do to help?” Alinta screamed, dread overwhelming her. She wept while clinging to her wolf, softly stroking her silky coat and kissing her face."You are not leaving me!" Alinta looked to the sky and screamed, "I swear to the fucking Divinities, if I lose my only sanity and siste
Alinta looked back at the road where Leo had just left, observing the settling dust, then said, "I'll admit it was strange how he didn’t want to set foot near the Inn, but we are here now. Let’s make the most of it and be extra cautious.""Yeah," Angela sighed pessimistically.Alinta made her way to the Inn, a large cottage-style building with a medieval feel. The place felt dark, filled with dark wooden furniture and antique trinkets. Stuffed trophies of deer, bears, and wolves hung on the walls, making Alinta shiver in the eerie atmosphere."This place smells of dust and death. I don’t like it," Angela said with a low growl."I know, so let’s just stay alert," Alinta whispered as if fearing someone would hear her thoughts."Hello and welcome!" greeted an elderly woman at the reception desk."Hi, thank you," Alinta responded, startled."My name is Jennifer, the owner and host of the Bare Canyon Inn. How can I help you?""Nice to meet you, Jennifer. I'm Alinta Ull.""Ah, let’s see," t
**November 25, 2024, Present**Alinta and Angela spent the entire day in their cottage, discussing their plans. They agreed to join Jennifer and Xavier, but once they arrived at the caverns, they had to leave them and explore the area."Are you really okay with this plan?" Angela asked, still uneasy about the whole idea."Come on! I’m finally the one not chickening out on something, and now you’re acting like this," Alinta pouted.Angela remained quiet for a moment before exclaiming, "What the fuck?""What’s wrong?" Alinta asked."Go make yourself comfortable and get over here," Angela said anxiously.Alinta lay down on the large soft quilted bed and closed her eyes, instinctively connecting with her wolf. As she approached Angela, she noticed her wolf sitting with her back turned, staring at something on the ground, her fur standing up along her spine."What is it, Ange?" Alinta asked, carefully moving closer to her wolf. Angela turned to Alinta and moved aside, revealing a small bla
Angela was agitated, running in circles at the space available from the monstrous infiltrating rose bushes. She cussed and hissed as she meditated on their situation. Her person was fast asleep, and she sensed Bellinor's presence all over Alinta doing who knows what. She also grew increasingly anxious, knowing Onyx might appear at any time."You fucking weeds better earn your keep and prevent that mongrel from coming near me," she hissed as she felt someone enter her territory."My, my, such a captivating creature, yet has such a foul mouth," a deep voice hummed out loud, taking Angela by surprise. Her fur raised on her back and she growled anxiously."First of all, I don't give a fuck about your opinion. Secondly, who are you?" She spat ferociously whilst looking around for the intruder."Is this how you always treat your guests?" Asked the voice now closer. Angela was about to retort when, all of a sudden, the roses magically cleared away, creating a perfect arched entrance. As she
On a plane heading to Mercurysburg, Orion sat like a statue with his eyes closed. He had managed to book a flight for ten a.m., which would land in the capital around five a.m. the next morning. Orion was in a meditative state; he had been practising this every day for two hours, hoping for at least a fraction of his memories to return. During his travels, he also tried to learn as much as he could about the world he was in.Although Silas had spent centuries in this world, most of that time was spent in his forest, uninterested in what lay beyond its borders during the seasons of change. When the time came for him to leave the forest, he had no idea what to expect. It was thanks to Greer and his many avian friends from nearby cities, who were familiar with the affairs of the two-legged, featherless giants—whether shifters or humans—that Orion and Silas were able to navigate the world outside his forest. Now, Orion and Silas had thirteen long hours remaining on the agonizing flight. Bellinor gently released her hands to wrap his arms securely around her and carefully rocked his treasure while planting occasional kisses on her head. "Fear not, our princess is in no danger. This is just part of the plan," Draven reassured calmly."What? You did this?!" Bellinor was about to rage, but Draven interrupted him."Her voice is gone to prevent her from rejecting us; it is only temporary until she is branded," Draven said dangerously."I see," replied Bellinor, while enjoying Alinta in his arms. He noticed she seemed ready to bolt if given the chance. "The doctor will be here soon, my darling," he whispered, then let go of her neck to brush her hair away from her face. The woman turned her head away from his hand and started to shift uneasily, holding her neck again as the pain became more pronounced. Seeing she had an opening, Alinta mentally set aside her discomfort and attempted to escape his hold, but Bellinor easily trapped her in his embrace."Is it still sore, my da
"Wh...what do you...?" Alinta's face paled when she saw the empty office. She frantically looked around, hoping to find Orion, but once she accepted that he was indeed not there, she turned to face Bellinor, confusion written all over her face.Bellinor smiled at her knowingly and approached her ardently. "My darling, do you still fear me?" Alinta backed away, provoking a wave of anger in Bellinor. However, just as quickly as it ignited, it faded, and his soft expression returned."Please, do not fear me. I have given you my heart, love, and sincerity. I only worship you, my little Vixen. You are completely oblivious to the extent of my adoration for you. I have been there for you during your moments of loneliness and even when you wished me away. I know what I did to you twelve years ago was wrong, but after all these years, you are still the only female I desire and love."Alinta took another step back, her wide-open eyes fixed on Bellinor. Aside from his eerie, infatuated expressio
Sleepily stirring from her slumber, Alinta shot up as she recalled what happened before she passed out. Waking up in an unfamiliar bed frightened both her and Angela. Her wolf was aggressive and on edge, ready to annihilate, frustration evident at her repeated failures to protect them.Alinta, on the other hand, trembled at the thought of what might have happened while they were unconscious. Checking her body for any pain or bruises, she closed her eyes and held her breath to examine her vulnerable areas. Alinta sighed in relief, realising she was untouched. This news calmed Angela somewhat, but her anxiety to escape matched Alinta's determination."What the hell happened? Did that jerk kidnap us?!" Angela growled anxiously."I don't think so. Before I passed out, I remember he was thrown off of us," Alinta replied, shivering at the memory."Als!" Angela barked nervously."What?" Alinta jumped."I’m trapped! That creepy black plant grew around me and it's fucking massive! I can't jump
In his mind's eye, Bellinor saw a bare man crouched over Alinta, about to kiss her. Filled with rage, he transformed into a mass of black ash and violet static, surging toward the man with ferocity. First, he struck the man with such force that he was sent flying into a boulder. Then, the ash engulfed him, transporting him into the sky."You dare lay your hands on what belongs to me!?" Bellinor bellowed with more than one voice. The man was shrieking like a maniac, as he was being crushed and suffocated by the pressing force. His body was robbed of all its fluids, the black vortex created a dried-out carcass which evaporated to blackened dust absorbed by Draven's magic. The mist twirled like a whirlwind in front of the semi-conscious woman, and Bellinor returned to his form. He looked like a tyrant ready to kill all who dared to oppose him, but his eyes immediately softened once his treasure's grateful gaze consumed his view, before she fell unconscious. He gently lifted Alinta into h
