Chapter 6

Penulis: Dream Searcher
Edward's face darkened, his expression contorting into a death glare. "If anything happens to her, Taylor, you'll pay for this!"

He took her in his arms and left.

I stood there, stunned.

He had sworn to love me forever back then—the same man who had bared his fangs at me because of Maddison.

The irony was agonizing.

When did it happen? When had he started falling for her? Why hadn't I noticed?

Pain gripped me. It wasn't until Cherry came into my room and asked if I was okay that I finally snapped out of it.

I should not be feeling hurt over a bastard who didn't care about me!

I returned to work.

-

By noon, my phone rang.

Seeing it was from Cameron, I ended the call without picking it up.

A while later, it rang again. This time, it was from my father.

I started to wonder if Maddison had finally died. Hesitating for a moment, I answered.

Unfortunately, the first thing I heard was my father's verbal abuse at a volume that could have made my ears bleed.

"Taylor Jones, you heartless witch! You hit her knowing she's frail and sick! You even shoved her to the ground!" he snarled.

I set my phone aside and let him rant.

When he was finally done, I picked it up and replied, "I have a surveillance camera in my office. You could have just asked for the truth."

Not that it would change anything. They'd find a way to blame me anyway.

As expected, my father roared, "The hell with your 'truth!' The real issue is how ruthless and heartless you've been despite your sister's condition!

"You can't even show a human's worth of sympathy and empathy! You just can't let her have anything good, can you?!"

I didn't try to argue. It would be a waste of time.

My silence seemed to cool some of his rage. He stopped for a moment and finally lowered his voice. "Maddison wants you to be her wedding witness. You're free that day, so just help her out."

"If you're not worried I'll ruin everything, sure."

He fell silent, then suddenly said, "If you go and be her wedding witness—no sabotaging, no scheming—then I'll give you the shares to the company that should have belonged to your mother."

I was shocked. I had worked for years to secure those shares and never succeeded in getting even 1/10 of them.

And now he was willing to give all of them to me?

"I want half of them under my name now," I said.

I had to make sure he didn't pull anything funny after I fulfilled my end of the bargain.

"Once the wedding is over, you can transfer the other half," I added.

He hesitated for a moment.

"Fine, damn it!" he growled, gritting his teeth. "Greedy as always, just like that mother of yours."

"Better than being a disloyal, cruel man like you," I retorted.

-

That fall had worsened Maddison's condition. She could barely walk until the day of her wedding.

The gown had been tailored for me. On a frail, thin girl like Maddison, it looked far too loose.

Cameron stared at the result in contempt. "You keep boasting about how many international awards you've won, and yet you can't even make a dress that fits her!"

"That's because it fits me, genius. What's a thief doing complaining about the stuff they stole not fitting them?" I shot back.

"Why you—"

"Enough, Mom," Maddison said weakly, tugging at her arm. "Don't blame her. It's better to have it loose. Easier to get out of it."

She grinned sweetly at me. "Thank you, Taylor, for helping me make my dream come true."

I wanted to gag right in her face. I really wanted to leave the room.

Unfortunately, as I made my way out, Edward walked in, dressed in his tailor-made suit.

He looked so handsome, exuding an air of royalty. The crowd couldn't help but stare at him.

I had designed that suit for our day. Seeing him wear it now felt like a slap in the face.

"Taylor," he said softly.

I ignored him, rolled my eyes, and turned to leave.

But then I heard my father. "Where do you think you're going? The wedding's about to start. Your sister's too weak to walk on her own. Help her out!"

I turned around in disbelief. "I'm supposed to help her walk?!"

"You're the witness and her sister! What's wrong with that?" Cameron retorted.

I was enraged.

Before I could respond, though, Edward chimed in, "Taylor, you shoved her to the floor and made her condition worse. The bridal gown is beautiful, but it's heavy for her. It's—"

I couldn't bear to hear him finish.

I stormed back into the room toward her.

Maddison raised her arm like a queen, as though I were her servant.

When I caught her arm, she grinned. "Thank you!"

That smile was a gloat. But fine. I could almost imagine the Grim Reaper grinning beside her, too. I'd treat this as a good deed I was doing to please God.

The wedding began. "Here Comes the Bride" echoed through the gilded hall.

The church door opened slowly and ceremoniously. The spotlight pooled on the bride's silhouette.

It illuminated Maddison and me.

I gritted my teeth as the pain in my chest grew. I could hear the crowd whisper.

"Wait, what's going on? Isn't the bride supposed to be Taylor Jones? Why is Maddison the one in it?"

"Did they confuse who the bride should be?"

"The bride's become the bridesmaid! Is this a prank?!"

I forced myself to weather the humiliation and led Maddison to the stage.

Edward stood tall and dignified. His face showed emotion, and for a moment, I thought I saw tears in his eyes—but he wasn't looking at me.

He was gazing at Maddison with rapt attention. Those tears weren't for me.

A sharp stab of pain pierced my chest, spreading through my body. I couldn't believe this was the man I had loved for eight years!

He said he was doing this to fulfill Maddison's wish. So why did it seem like the one he really wanted to marry—the one he truly loved—was Maddison all along?!

I didn't even notice my eyes watering. I just knew the world suddenly blurred when I instinctively passed Maddison to Edward.

He gently took her arm and placed his hand on her waist. They gazed deeply into each other's eyes as they ascended the stairs.

I returned to my seat in the front row.

I thought my heart had grown cold and numbed by the drama. I thought I could watch this like it was a circus. But I failed. I was in pain.

Suddenly, a lean, refined hand stretched toward me, holding a handkerchief.

I didn't turn to look. I took the handkerchief and croaked, "Thanks."

"You're welcome," a low, cool voice replied.

It pierced through the hubbub around us. "That man has no idea how rotten his luck is to have given you up."

I covered my eyes and took a couple of deep breaths. I was in no mood to face whoever this person might be.My father suddenly appeared. When he spoke, he addressed someone respectfully, "Mr. Kenway! Please, the VIP seat is that way.""It's alright. I'm happy to be seated here," the man replied coolly, though with an air of superiority. My father was about to respond when he was called away for the event.Cameron quickly came to lead him off.My mood finally stabilized. I looked up.Before I could return the handkerchief, I heard a voice calling out, "Let us put our hands together to welcome the witness—Miss Taylor Jones!"The spotlight suddenly hit me. The chatter quieted, and a heavy silence swept across the hall.I could tell the crowd was shocked. Some looked at me with pity and sympathy, while others waited eagerly for some kind of drama.I straightened my back and put on my mental armor. Steeling myself, I climbed the steps.Commotion returned to the audience."Rumor h

Maddison's eyes began to well up, and I realized what she was doing—she was trying to guilt-trip everyone in the audience."I want to thank my sister for letting me be with the man I love, for letting me leave this world without regret. So I wish… I wish all of you would stop making jokes at her expense! She's the best sister in the world!" she cried. The audience fell silent. No one was jeering anymore.I scanned the crowd, wondering if I was mistaken. There was an exceptionally handsome man in the crowd who didn't seem at all convinced. He smirked.Maddison turned around, eyes tearful. "Taylor, I want to know… Do you hate me?"I quivered with rage. She had been planning this all along! She wanted me to perform for her.God, I could hurl. The host passed me another mic, thinking my silence was due to a technical issue.I was already struggling to hide my contempt, but with this?I decided I wouldn't suffer in silence anymore.I took the mic and smiled, then turned to face t

The situation spiraled out of control, and the guests started flashing their phones, taking pictures.I was just a woman fighting a battle alone, and it didn't take long before I found myself at a sharp disadvantage.Fortunately, Edward's parents were embarrassed enough to try to stop the fight."Please! We're in public! This is our children's wedding!" they cried out."Don't try to stop me! I'm gonna fucking kill this bitch today for fucking with my life!" Harry howled. He had completely lost control.Suddenly, Cameron shouted, "Stop it! Maddie's fainted! Somebody help us!"Harry froze mid-attack, shoved me away, and lurched toward his precious daughter. "What happened?! Somebody call goddamn 911 right now!"The crowd around me dispersed, and Maddison became the center of attention again.Edward panicked. He ran to her and scooped her into his arms. "Maddie, Maddie! Listen to me! Stay with me, okay? We're getting you to the hospital right now!"I was in a disheveled state. My

Why would a Kenway—especially this mysterious "S"—show up at my wedding?I couldn't think of a reason. Did we mail our invitation to the wrong person?Well, at least he got to witness the most entertaining show in all of Metropolis the moment he arrived. I'd call that a win.My phone rang, pulling me out of my thoughts. It was Jean. She wasted no time, snarling, "Those two assholes! I almost smashed my phone just watching them! Girl, I'm so glad you fucking shot back at those pieces of shit!"I sighed and leaned back into my car seat. "Don't tell me it's gone viral.""Can you blame it? You don't see people this insane that often. You can't make this up!" she replied. "The Internet is split into two camps, and they're at war, Tay-Tay!"I closed my eyes, a headache beginning to pulse through my skull.I wanted revenge, yes. But I didn't want to drag myself into this maelstrom, too. I could capsize just as easily."Are you alright, Tay-Tay? You were attacked!" Jean asked, concern

Edward said someone was going to die.I groggily beamed at him, oddly gleeful. "Ooh, when's Maddison's funeral?""How could you be so inhuman?!" Edward growled, his face dark with rage.I had never seen him like this before.I frowned and shoved him toward the door. I was ready to slam it shut when he suddenly kicked it open and grabbed my arm.I was furious.Struggling, I slapped him across the face. "I can call the cops on you for home invasion. Piss off!"Edward ignored me, his grip firm, and forced me into his car."What the hell is wrong with you, Edward?! Let me out of here!""Her life hangs in the balance, Taylor! You're coming with me to the hospital!"He stomped on the gas pedal, and the car surged forward into the early morning light.I was confused. "What does this have to do with me, anyway? I'm not a doctor!"Edward's lips pressed into a grim line. He looked like a man on the edge, and as the car picked up speed, a knot of fear tightened in my chest. What if h

Well, no reason to keep this useless secret from him now, was there?I turned to Edward and smirked. "You already know this now? God. Breaking news! Maddison and Miles are my siblings by blood. Different moms, that's all.""B-But she's only two years your junior!" Edward cried out in disbelief."Oh, you noticed? Good. My prolific fuc—I mean, 'father'—had started his affair when I was just a one-year-old. Or maybe he started earlier. He did all he could to make my mom divorce him so he could marry the shameless homewrecker."Edward's shocked gaze flitted between Harry and Cameron."You've never told me anything about that," he muttered, a look of seeming guilt shadowing his face."Now, why would I tell anyone about my family's most shameful secret? Besides, I thought you were smart enough to deduce it on your own!" I replied scornfully. Was our shared blood type not enough of a giveaway? Dumbass. He said nothing, so I added, "Now you understand why I've been so against helping h

The nurse frowned. "You've been taking sleeping pills lately?""To help me sleep, yes. I took two pills." I glanced at the clock in the ER. "It was about four hours ago, I believe."The nurse shook her head. "Ah, that won't do. You won't pass the test."I shrugged, much to their dismay. "Sorry, guys. This time, it's not about my reluctance. I really can't help."Harry stomped his foot. "You are playing games with us, Taylor! Why didn't you just say you can't donate your stupid blood outright?!""Well, Edward basically abducted me from home before I could even make sense of this whole thing," I replied innocently, blinking."You!" Edward growled, glaring at me.Seeing their exasperated faces filled me with a petty sense of satisfaction.Just then, the ER door swung open."We're running low on blood supplies!" the nurse announced. "Have you found a donor yet?"Cameron's knees seemed to buckle as she shoved Harry forward. "Go and donate yours already! Our daughter is dying!"Ha

"Sorry. I came here in a hurry and didn't manage to grab my phone," I admitted."Ha, no problem! I haven't even started the app yet. You can pay me once you're home," she replied generously.I was honestly pretty surprised by that.I gave her the address as she entered it into her car's GPS. The car smoothly steered out of the parking lot and onto the driveway. Her phone rang after a while. She connected it to her Bluetooth earphones."Hello? Oh, yeah, I left. Mm-hmm. Just call your own driver!"Why? Well, something happened! I didn't have time to inform you, but trust me, you'll love it once I tell you at home."For real, no cap. Anyway, can't talk—driving! Byeee!"I glanced at the rear-view mirror instinctively. Was I hallucinating? A young, lean man stood by the roadside where we had just left. The morning rays illuminated him, bringing warmth to his cool, collected demeanor. His presence seemed to purify the air and silence the noise around him.He looked almost ethereal

"So what? It's always couples' intimacy hour everywhere," Soren replied with a grin, leaning in for a kiss.I turned away. "You reek of alcohol!"He sniffed himself, clearly thinking he smelled bad, too. I expected him to ignore it and keep going, but instead, he pulled me upright. "Let's go. To the showers!"I guessed he was worried that our first time after two years would be ruined by bad breath and stench. He tried to lift me into his arms, but I was concerned he might be too tipsy. We had a playful struggle before he finally scooped me up in a bridal carry."I told you. I'm not drunk!" he insisted.I realized there was no escaping him today, so I reminded him, "Our son is still at the hospital, Soren. With Aunt Sarah.""Mm-hmm. Once his mommy and daddy love each other very much, he'll see us.""Soren! Be serious!""Loving my wife is the most serious thing there is."-Two months later, my grandmother passed away peacefully in her sleep. Soren and I had only just woken u

I got up and shot Soren a glance. "You guys must have been worried about him over these two years. Thank you for taking care of him.""Why, you're welcome," Richard replied with exaggerated pomp. "He didn't torment us, actually. He took it out on his subordinates. He worked like a machine, and everyone under him had to do the same. You should really thank his employees the most!"A pang shot through me as I looked at Soren. I'd heard about this from Jean, but hearing it again from his close friends only deepened that painful regret.I thought I'd been kind, but it was likely the cruelest thing I'd ever done to him. And yet, he held no blame against me and still loved me.It moved me. I filled both our glasses to the brim.Soren looked baffled. "What are you doing? They didn't specifically want to make you drink—""A toast to our relationship, my love," I said, passing him his glass.Soren froze, clearly not expecting this from me.The crowd, though, had already erupted into che

Being with Soren felt like a walk in the sunniest, coolest spring. He told me he loved me, and that made me his equal.Know what? It made me feel confident all of a sudden. We locked eyes for a long time before I pulled away."I… I'm basically unemployed right now," I muttered.I was about to launch a new business, but my grandmother's illness and my son's age forced me to set everything aside again."It wasn't easy raising a child alone, Tay, so don't put so much pressure on yourself. Besides, with your skills, it's only a matter of time before your career takes off again."I beamed. "You really think so? That's a lot of confidence, dude.""Of course I do." He held my hands. "Starting a business takes time and energy, so how about you move in with me? I'll raise our son while you focus on what you want to do."I laughed. "Oh God, was that the whole point of this talk from the start?"Soren laughed as well, his handsome face relaxing. "Well, now that we're getting married, whe

Soren smiled. "No need to doubt. That was one of my ulterior motives."So he wanted me to agree to our marriage because he wanted sex?!I stared at him, unmoving."Come on, I'm sending you both up," he said, his driver's presence making things awkward.Soren took the baby from my arms and strode inside. In the elevator, he stared at me without blinking.I grew self-conscious. "What?""Nothing. I just wanted to look at you, not missing a single detail," Soren replied matter-of-factly. "I hadn't dared do that before we started talking again because I was afraid you might be upset."I felt even more embarrassed. He set Silas in the cot, then turned to me and walked away.It was too late. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me into his chest. I saw his face loom over mine and cried out, "Don't do this, Soren! This is Amanda's place!"His reason and restraint were still functioning, turning his kiss into a brief peck."When will you move to my villa?" he breathed."N

I knew what had happened to me. I knew what two years had done to my face. A woman aged much faster when she had a child, after all.Celebrities looked the way they did because they didn't bear the weight of child-rearing. They had the money to pamper their faces and dedicate themselves to rigorous exercise routines.I had raised my son on my own. I had help when I needed it most, but most of the time, it was just me."So, you don't think I've grown older and uglier?" I muttered.Soren laughed."Oh, I do!" he teased. "But you're the mother of my son.""What does that mean?! And you said you weren't pitying me!"He laughed again—this time, affectionately. "I was joking. I don't think you're any less than who you were back then. I actually wish you'd grow older, too. That way, only I remain by your side."I couldn't come up with a response to something so ridiculous."Do you need me to throw a grand, elaborate proposal to finally convince you I'm serious about wanting to spend t

"It's the way he looks at you. His eyes look suspicious!"Suspicious, my ass. Jamie was so far away from him by now that there was no way Soren could see anything in Jamie's "eyes."I sneered. "Don't be daft. He's got a girlfriend now." "Oh, really?""Yes, really. Can we go now?"My old colleagues had been staring at us, and I really didn't want to become the subject of their gossip. I just wanted to leave.Soren finally told the driver to go.Silas had probably exhausted himself from crying. It didn't take long for him to fall asleep in my arms.Soren stretched his arms out. "Let me.""I'm fine. It's okay for him to sleep like this. My arms are fine," I replied.I didn't want to give him an excuse to enter Amanda's residence with me again. I was only here temporarily, and I certainly didn't want things to get... steamy and intimate at her place. Besides, I didn't want to be steamy with him, period.Soren withdrew his arms sheepishly and snickered to himself.Annoyed, and

"Hello?""When are you coming back?" Soren asked in a low voice.I stood and left the lively private room. "I'm having lunch with some old colleagues. What's up?""Wow. So while I was trying to handle our son, you went out to have fun," he whined.Please. He wanted Silas with him—he was just being dramatic. The wine gave me enough courage to respond, "Weren't you the one complaining about missing out on your son's childhood? I'm just being considerate.""Fine. Where are you? I'll bring Silas to you. He wants his mom now—no one here can calm him down," he replied.Just as I had expected.I figured lunch was nearing its end anyway, so I gave him the address. "Call me when you arrive. I'll meet you at the entrance.""Got it."I returned to the room and quietly told Amanda, "I have to leave soon. You guys go ahead."She checked her phone. "Nah, we should all start packing up. We still have to work this afternoon!""Oh, right."I paid for our meal while the others chatted.Whe

The company had seen some new hires, but many were familiar faces.Case in point: Cherry Birkin. Now Amanda's assistant and principal secretary, she was ecstatic to see me."Tay-Tay! You're back!" she cried, rushing over to grab my arms. "It really is you! I'm so glad you came to see us. After disappearing for two years, I honestly thought you'd never come back!"Amanda, who had been the one to welcome me, stood beside me, smiling. "See? Your old colleagues have been complaining about you being heartless.""Aww, I'm sorry for being gone so long! How about this? Lunch is on me! Cherry, gather the old crew and invite them over!""You got it!" she replied eagerly.I stepped into Amanda's office—the same one where I used to work.A lot had changed in the interior, but everything felt warm and welcoming. The company was thriving under her and Jamie's leadership. There was a knock at the door. I turned to see the man himself."So, you really are back, Taylor," he said with a grin. "

I was irritated. If I were being generous, I'd say Soren was being proactive. If I were being honest, though, I'd call it disrespectful—he was undermining my agency!"I haven't even agreed to this yet!" I snapped, straightening my back and glaring at him as the seniors watched. "Who gave you the right to make decisions for me?!"Soren barely reacted. "You overthink everything. You hesitate more than you need to, so I thought... why not just ask your grandmother and aunt?"Turning to Sarah, he added, "What do you think, Aunt Sarah? Do you approve of us being together?"Sarah blinked, stunned, then shot a quick glance at my grandmother. My grandmother raised her hand, as though she had something to say. I leaned in immediately. "I'm listening, Grandma..."She took a deep breath, grasped my hand, and said, her voice raspy, "I can tell… Ren really loves you… You have a child now… It's good for you two to just get married."She paused, then added, "That way, I… can finally let go...
