“Good afternoon, Alpha Demetri. How are you doing?”

“I’m doing well. How’s Cole fairing?”

“He’s unfortunately on quite the roller coaster but I’m hoping this conference call will help him.”

I stand just in front of the couch not certain what to make of the situation.

“Cole, before we start talking too deeply I need to know if we need to cut the crap.”

“Wh…. What?” I barely stammer, unable to comprehend what he’s asking me.

“Do you remember the first time, the only time you have ever said that to me?”

“Ye… yes sir.”

“So I need you to slow down, think about the situation you were in then and tell me if we need to cut the crap.”

His voice is stern, making me wonder if I’ve done something wrong.

“No sir.”

Hearing his voice has made it even more difficult to function.

“Can you hand Cole the phone? I have an important question to ask him.”

“You’re on speaker phone so he can hear you but yes, I can give him the phone for a little bit.”

Alpha Andrew walks up to me with his hand held out waiting for me to take it.

“Cole,” Alpha’s voice is much gentler and easier to handle. “Have you been put in a link lock since your arrival Friday night?”

“Alpha please, I don’t want to talk with them. They are part of the council. Things are already going to be bad when I return to Red Fang. Really bad. He’s already promised me that.”

My voice is barely above a whisper as I speak. Jamie is staring at me as I finish as I haven’t told him about the torment I endured last night.

“When were you told this?”

“I didn’t get much sleep last night.”

“What else did he tell you last night?”

“No, alpha. I can’t.”

“Yes you can, Cole. Angela has vouched for them. She spent her first five years in the council in the New England South-central Headquarters. Andrew and Michael were there with her and together they made a lot of changes towards the humane treatment of all wolves, not just the omega ranks. They want to help you just like we do. They will not hurt you while you are at White Ridge and they will not allow you to be alone with Alpha Whiteman. They have promised us that. Angela told me about the old Alpha Whiteman but the purpose of this meeting was to allow the three of us, you, me and Jamie to understand who Alpha Whiteman is now and what the expectations are so that you are as comfortable as possible until we know if you can come back to me.”

“I want to trust you alpha.”

My voice quivers as I fight the sobs that threaten to break through.

“I know you do. My fear is that he’s already chipping away at what little trust you have in me. That’s why I need to know what he’s told you.”

“He knows I’m planning something, he just doesn’t know what. He knows that Jessa is my mate. He named her directly. He knew while she was there that she was my mate. That was the year he made certain to convince me that I was too weak to be awarded a luna by the moon goddess. Convincing me that I would never get one made it easier to keep her away from me. It made it easier for him to abuse her.”

I can’t hold back my tears as I let out what he made certain I understood.

“Did he give you details?”

“No sir. He refused to tell me what he did to her.”

“Does he know you met her?”

“I don’t know. The way he spoke made it sound like he was teasing me with it. That he knew I had a mate in the world that I would never meet but I can’t be certain.”

“Do you know if he’s capable of stealth linking?”

“Stealth, sir?”

“It takes a lot of practice to do but Damian knows that I can listen in on conversations that he has when he’s linked with others in the pack. My understanding is that stealth can only be done when one of the wolves participating in the link gives permission for the extra link to happen but I have managed to do it with Damian accidentally and he’s never known it.”

“I’ve never heard of such a link. I’ve heard of the head alpha being able to do a broadcast link to all pack members but that’s about the closest thing to what you’re describing. Could that be part of being an intuitive?”

I startle hard at the sound of Alpha Andrew’s voice. It takes a moment for me to finally let my breath out.

“Try to make yourself comfortable.”

I manage to cough instead of yelp in response to Beta Michael’s hand on my shoulder.

“May I see the phone? I’d like to set the Bluetooth speaker so we can all hear him a little easier.” I nod as I hand him the phone back.

“I never thought of it as a special ability, Mike. I suppose it may be unique.”

“I hope it is.” Jamie chimes in.

He’s been so quiet that I had nearly forgotten that he was sitting there.

“Can you hear me, Demetri?” Alpha Andrew asks as he puts the phone on the table.

“Yes sir.”

I whine hard and instinctively cover my ears not expecting the phone to suddenly become so loud.

“I’m going to turn the volume down. It appears to be too loud for Cole.”

I watch as he presses a button several times on a short but wide pyramid located in the middle of the table.

“Can you speak again so I can hear where the volume is at?”

“Sure, is this any better?”

I slowly let go of my ears, wanting to trust this new but unfamiliar technology that I’m being introduced to.

“Is this better for you Cole?” I hear alpha address me directly.

“Yes sir, thank you.”

My voice is back to being meek. I finally sit back on the couch with Jamie, placing my head in my hands.

“Are you okay, Cole?” Alpha Andrew’s voice is quiet but close.

I stifle my yelp when I look up, startled by him crouching down so close to me. I simply nod my head and wait for him to return back to his seat on the other side of the coffee table.

“Do you believe that your father is capable of linking with you without you knowing it?” Alpha asks again.

“No sir. All connections with the link hurt me now. I can feel him before he says anything to me.”

He sighs loudly, letting me know that he doesn’t like my answer.

“Who in your pack do you have a link with?” Beta Michael is getting curious.

“For a while everyone in my family could connect with me as well as the reverse but everyone stopped by the time I shifted. Dad figured out how to force a link with me two years later but no one else has bothered to try. I can link with Jamie and Jon but it causes me a lot of pain to communicate that way.”

“Does it hurt you all the time?”

I can’t help but sigh as I wasn’t prepared to get so deep into something that is normally quite simple.

“Yes alpha. I can handle the pain when I’m not dealing with a concussion on top of it but yes, it always hurts.”

“I can tell that talking about this so unexpectedly is creating a lot of anxiety so I’d like to ask one more question before Andy starts talking about the pack, how he came to be there and how he would like to help you get away from Red Fang.”

“Yes sir.”

“Has it always hurt you to link?” He asks me quite gingerly.

“No sir, the link didn’t physically hurt when I used it with my siblings.”

“What about your father or mother?”

“I thought the previous question was your last one.” I carelessly remark.

“Yes I did.”

His voice is soft but almost joyful with my remark which I find relaxing despite the subject that we’re on.

It was quite embarrassing to admit that I had no idea what they were talking about.” “I’m certain that was especially difficult considering you’re the alpha’s son.” “Yes sir, it was. On top of what he was already doing to me, the bullying that came from not knowing my wolf at six years old was quite devastating. Chloe discovered me crying, hiding on the floor at the back of the bus. She told me that the school had called dad and he linked with her asking her to find me. I paid dearly for running away from class but on top of my punishment that evening he grabbed the back of my neck and growled at me; ‘you want to know about the link?’ It felt like my head exploded. “Good. If at any time you feel overwhelmed let me know and feel free to ask questions. You as well, Demetri.” “Yes sir. Thank you, Andrew.” “Forty years ago Alpha Winston Whiteman was the only child out of five to survive a devastating rogue attack on the White Ridge pack. The council believes that it was only because he was the youngest child and the rogues didn’t know who he was that they allowed him to live. Members of the pack naturally knew who he was and while all alpha, beta and delta wolves were either killed or run off from the pack, the gamma and omega ranks were forced to assimilate into the pack the rogues created. Alpha Whiteman was three years old when the attack happened and it was fated mates Bruce and Emily Deeds who worked very closely with the Whiteman’s who ultimately saved his life. Emily was Winston’s personal nanny which made it so that when the rogues broke into the pack house Emily was able to grab Winston and run him to her house. The rogues left him belie

The national committee members had recently passed regulations on how many both needed to have in each region. It was discovered that the committee in this region was low by ten members so they went to each of the ten regional council headquarters that they are in charge of and asked each one for a list of the members who they would consider promoting to the committee. I heard that it was an extensive process but considering my interview and promotion offer was at the tail end I wasn’t informed of everything that went into their decision. They were shocked when I told them I felt I still had work to settle at the council and I wasn’t willing to move unless I could come back. They never explained why but they allowed me to keep both positions and I was very active in both positions until eight years ago. As

“Something happens if you return after the deadline?” I shake my head trying to rid myself of the regular welcoming I tend to receive. “I only know what happens when I return with the rest of the prospects three months into a run. I’ve never been this close to his deadline.” “Your welcome home isn’t very welcoming, is it?” I shake my head again as I go silent. “Thank you. I understand better why Demetri and Xavier have taken steps to make your request to return so seriously so quickly. The current state of the council makes things move at a snail's pace and time is not on your side. You asked about information on operation underground. I believe your now secondary plan for returning to Crimson Dawn is reliant on it.” I nod my head but again stay silent. “As I said, I can’t get into details on how it works as that’s not something anyone knows until they are actively in it but I can give you history on how it got started.” I cock my head, curious to hear what was never taught in

(Jamison’s POV)“Stop it! Just leave me be! Why isn’t it enough that you’ve abandoned me here with the sole purpose of forcing me to miss your deadline! What have I done to deserve this torture!” I startle awake as my best friend screams. The last four days have been an utter nightmare for Cole as his father has found the perfect way to torture him without ever touching him. His unrelenting links with Cole has left him exhausted and riddled in pain and that’s just the physical effects. On one of his father’s longer breaks yesterday, he managed to tell me some of the things that Alpha Redmen has told him. He started early in the morning Tuesday randomly rattling off all the things he plans to do to Cole when he gets home. Despite his inconsistency with exactly what he’s planning on doing or using on Cole, one thing has remained the same, he’s not coming to get us. Cole’s deadline will expire and his welcoming will be “the best yet.” Cole did report that his father has been consistent

(Jamison’s POV)It’s been a month since Dr. Moore received permission to medically sever Cole’s link. Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked the way it normally does. This medication has made it even more obvious that Cole’s linking abilities are vastly different then everyone else’s. I’ve attended several meetings for Cole between Alpha Black and Alpha Whiteman. Both alpha’s stances remain the same at every meeting. Alpha Black continues to beg Alpha Whiteman to send Cole back before the council gives permission for it to happen and Alpha Whiteman, while he’s willing to help Cole escape, he is steadfastly against making a move before the council approves it. Cole has spoken several times of simply running from White Ridge, the problem with that plan is how weak his father has made him. With only his feet to carry him he’d be lucky to find his way out of the White Ridge territory. I’ve made my way, once again, to Alpha Whiteman’s office. We’re supposed to be having lunch with him but Cole

(Cole’s POV)It’s been nearly twelve weeks since my father deceived the council and left Jamie and I at White Ridge. Dad took advantage of my closeness to the pack for six weeks, using my abnormal link for the sadistic pleasure of causing me both physical and mental pain. It took two weeks after Dr. Moore stopped giving me the blocking medication for my father to finally tire of the energy he was putting into creating my misery. It took several days of him leaving me alone for us to believe that he might actually be done. That’s when Jamie finally opened up to me about the plan Alpha Whiteman was encouraging us to form which includes the plans Jamie wanted to create before we even left. I am ashamed of myself for not listening to my beta sooner. Alpha Whiteman’s plan is to give me access to an emergency cabin five miles into the woods. I would only be able to carry a single pack with my most important items but the alpha did reassure me that if I successfully ran to the cabin before

The first hour of my journey is uneventful as I pick my way through the thick trees. We’ve traveled this overgrown path many times but the darkness of early morning is proving even more difficult to navigate than in the daytime despite my partial shift. ‘Beware, Dallas.’ My wolf whispers in my head. Unfortunately, my father using the link to torture me for six weeks and Alpha Andrew’s attempt to block him resulted in even my wolf talking to me being very uncomfortable. I pause my movements, turning slowly in a circle, looking and smelling for him. I find myself at quite the disadvantage considering how I’m traveling upwind. Unable to detect anyone in the woods with me, I continue but at a slower pace. I may have gained half the weight I lost when I first got here but I’m still about fifteen pounds lower than where I was at Crimson Dawn and about forty pounds less than peak condition. Add my low body weight to my anxiety and asthma issues and this five mile hike is quite the underta

Turns out she’s an empath and was very sick with silver poisoning. They were able to save her and to the best of my knowledge he returned to Crimson Dawn around the beginning of the year.”“He did it? He made it home?”His face lights up like a child on Christmas day.“Yes, he is with his mate in the protections of Alpha Demetri Black. Unfortunately, his amnesia has not yet resolved and as a precaution, in order to obtain custody of Cole, Alpha Black had to agree to restrict his movements until his mental health improves.”“He’s a prisoner there?”I had a feeling he would take this part hard.“Not necessarily. Considering what little I know about the hell he lived through next door and his encounter with the alpha of Purple Mountain, I don’t see where he’ll have the desire to leave that territory any time soon.”He nods his head a little more relaxed

The look of disbelief on his face. While it takes him several deep breaths he does manage to shut the door by the time I’ve stood from my desk. “Where would you like to sit?” Once again he’s in disbelief. “I need you as relaxed and level headed as possible. He chooses the rocking recliner allowing him to rock subtlety as Hayden stirs gently. I smile as he console

While any other wolf in this pack saying such a thing would be passed off as simply being very serious about their statement, you stating that you nearly died once to fight for them is something I take very seriously. What happened the last time they were taken from you?” I shake my head hard, holding my breath as I fight against the flashbacks trying to invade my thoughts. “Andre?” He tries again but all I can do is shake my head slowly. “Papa Redmen hit him. (Andre’s POV) Stepping into the pack house is surreal at best. My head is spinning out of control with thoughts I had desperately tried to put behind me. I had relinquished all hope of ever having my kids just for the full force of the unpredictably of my life to cripple me when I need to be my strongest. The house is silent as I pick my way through the crowd. Julius is carrying Harper and Abe is trailing behind the two of us. It seems Julius wants as much of a barrier as he can create between Hayden and any escape route he may manage to find. I’m more concerned about him getting lost inside the pack house than him getting outside it. This place has proven to be a maze to me despite living here full time for the last six months. The house is completely silent except for the television quietly counting down the seconds until the new year. I can only hope that this year is different. That the New Year will actually be the change I’ve needed for years. Shamefully, I feel the dread tha

Andre has been beaten multiple times for pregnancies. The first two were not his, yet he was mercilessly beaten three times during both of those pregnancies. He was forgiven a fourth when the pups came back not his. The beatings got worse when he got three others pregnant just to be denied the ability to be their father. The two older ones with two different ladies are in better packs than Red Fang but the two with him now. (Julius’s POV)It’s an hour's drive to get from Red General to the Red Moon pack house. Since Charles has been removed, moving through the Red Fang territory has become easier as the borders are completely open while the council is here. The bad news is, it’s gotten a lot more dangerous. While open borders allows the pack members to come and go, even move out if they please, it also allows rogues to infiltrate the territory. I’ve had to up my own guards on the border to account for the vulnerability it’s created for my own pack. The council hasn’t been happy with me accompanying Andre to and from the territory. They felt that, as the coronated heir, he should be able to handle this himself. I took the opportunity of his consistent meltdowns to save the fallout from such visits showing the council exactly how severe his abuse has been. I cringe every time I hear him speak about his brother, Cole. How has Cole even survived if his analogy of the situation is true? That Cole’s suffering

I had no idea how hard dad had been on me until I went to Blister Ridge. I had to harden up while I was back at Red Fang which has not only delayed my ability to process what has happened but it has added to the trauma I’m already struggling with.
