Megan woke up earlier than usual to go to the garden. She hoped to see the little cub as she felt better whenever she held him in her arms.
The sun wasn’t out yet and Megan was clear to the guards to not follow her into the garden. In a month’s time she will be divorced. She will no longer be queen or Luna and all she had lived for will be no more. She wasn’t even sure of her status in the castle after the divorce.
“Do I return home?” Megan asked out loud. “The shame might be too much for my family.”
“The former Luna returns home after a failed marriage due to her inability to provide an heir.” Megan laughed sadistically. If someone would have told her that her life would turn out this way at 27 she would have laughed in their face.
“Where are you, cub?” She asked. “I should’ve named you.” She thought. At Least it would’ve been easier to call out to him.
“Your highness!” She heard a male voice call from behind her.
“I told you I want to be alone.” Megan said and turned around.
“Forgive me your highness, but His Majesty requested your presence and you weren’t in your chambers.” The guard said.
“Why?” She asked. She didn’t think she would have to see him until the day of the divorce.
“I don’t know Luna but word is we got a letter from the Western Empire.”
Megan walked up the garden and into the castle. She walked past the night guards and up the flight of stairs where Richardson was sitting on his throne.
She bowed to him and took a seat beside him on her throne.
“Taking a walk without your escorts again, Luna.” Richardson said.
“I needed space. You sent for me.” Megan said, looking straight forward.
“I received word late last night. Rhode Wales and some dignitaries from the Western Empire requested a formal visit.” He said
“What for? They just left yesterday.” Megan asked.
“I’m not sure but they’re asking for an extended stay to strengthen our relations. Rejecting their request will be like a declaration of war.”
“There’s no reason to reject them. Right?” Megan asked.
“Something about this puts me off.” Richardson said.
“Emperor Rhode is probably looking to make real relations. Not the false one his father had with us. I think it’s a good thing.” Megan said, remembering the encounter she had with him in the garden.
“You’re probably right.” Richardson said. “I would also like you to use your spare time to show Aspen the ropes, considering how she’d be taking over your official duties.” He added.
“The duties of a queen and Luna cannot be learned in a month and besides, I have no spare hours. Aspen can be trained by the teachers.” Megan said. She felt incredibly insulted that Richardson thought her role could be easily filled in, something that took 17 years of her life to master before she was deemed fit for marriage.
Aspen was going to make hell of the responsibilities and that made Megan strangely happy.
“Why are you being difficult?” Richardson asked. “I thought you had the capacity to understand how important this is. She is carrying your future king!”
“Not if I leave this pack.” Megan thought. She didn’t dare to voice that aloud. There were permissions to leave the pack but only if she had solid arrangements in another pack like remarriage and she did not have that.
No one would want to marry the former Luna who couldn’t provide an heir.
“If that will be all your majesty, I need to get ready for the day.” Megan said and stood up, bowing to Richardson and she left the throne room.
In her quarters, Megan sat down in front of her big vanity where Rosetta was setting up her hair. She had to dress up again to welcome Rhode Wales.
“Rhode Wales, such a mystery.” Megan thought to herself. Their interaction in the garden kept replaying in her mind. Due to the fact that she had been betrothed to the future alpha of her clan, she never experienced the male gaze outside of Richardson.
She never had any man call her beautiful, except dignitaries who only said so because it was customary. Something about the way Rhode looked at her and called her beautiful did not feel forced or rehearsed and that made her feel giddy inside.
Brianna and Rosetta tied her corset and she was ready to go see the Wales'.
“Your highness! Breakfast?!” Brianna shouted.
“It's breakfast, silly.” Megan said informally, surprising Brianna and Rosetta who turned to look at themselves. The queen almost never spoke informally to them, especially lately that she had been more quiet and seemingly depressed due to the status of her marriage.
“Oh.” Brianna said. They were welcoming the Wales’ with a breakfast buffet and for the first time in a while Megan anticipated something.
Rhode and his entourage arrived in the Eastern kingdom in the early hours of the morning. His entourage was a deflection, his true purpose of his visit was to get close to Megan and offer her a ticket out of her pack.
“Have you thought this through?” Brian asked Rhode as they stepped out of the carriage.
“As much as I could.” He responded.
“Then have you thought about how Luna is never alone? Like ever? How do you plan to meet her one on one?” Brian asked as they began walking.
“I don’t have to.” He replied. “Megan has two close aides, her ladies in waiting. If I can meet her when she’s alone with them I’m sure she can ask them to step aside.”
“Not with you. Richardson will never let you sit alone with his wife.” Brian said. Rhode didn’t respond because he was right.
However, Rhode had other plans. He knew Megan frequented the garden after breakfast every morning to check for him in his cub form, and he knew she came with her ladies in waiting. That was enough for now.
Richardson and Megan stood at the top of the stairs, customary to welcome guests who were rulers of other clans.
Rhode and Brian approached them, not taking his eyes off Megan. She was dressed in a deep red dress in Victorian fashion with gold lace along her bust line. She held her hands together in front of her and their eyes met.
“Uncomfortable clothing.” Rhode called it but Megan looked breathtaking in her dress. He held her eyes as he approached her and her husband.
Luna had siren eyes with black pupils which captivated him, her thin nose and eyebrows framed her eyes perfectly.
“Presenting, Empire and alpha of the Western Empire, Rhode Wales and his prime minister, Brian Cartridge.” The announcer said.
Rhode bowed to Richardson and kissed Megan’s hand which shot electricity down her back. Megan had never felt anything like it before.
The four of them sat at the long dining table. Megan sat beside Richardson, Rhode and Brian at the other end.
The four of them discussed future relations.
“Perhaps you could send some international students to our empire, we have an exceptional school for magic wielders.” Brian proposed.
“That sounds good. What do you think, Luna?” Richardson asked Megan.
“I think that’s a great idea. It gives our people a chance to mix, not limiting our relationship to only among ourselves. I can handle that personally.” She responded.
“Oh yes. My queen has a bias for education amongst other things.” Richardson said which irked Megan. She didn’t need his fake compliments just because they were in the presence of the Wales’.
“Magnificent. We will be in touch. I look forward to my time here, your majesty, your highness.” Brian said.
“We share the same sentiments.” Megan said.
The breakfast ended and Rhode and his entourage were led to the guest quarters.
Richardson and Megan were left alone in the dining hall. Megan moved to leave the hall when Richardson said, “you look beautiful, today.” Something he used to say to her every time he saw her when they were growing up.
It used to make Megan smile. However she had not heard that in a long time and hearing it now angered her.
“If that will be all. Your majesty.” She bowed down and left him in the dining hall.
Rosetta and Brianna were waiting outside for her.
“I have your parasol ready, my queen.” Brianna said.
“Thank you, Brianna.” Megan said. She needed air.
She was getting increasingly sick of how she had to pretend that all was okay when in a month all she had ever known and worked for would be snatched from her.
She was going to make Richardson pay, but how?
Megan was taking a walk in the garden when she sighted rustling in a bush. “Maybe it’s my cub.” She thought to herself.“Brianna, Rosetta, you both can stay here.” She said and lifted up her thick skirt. She jogged over to the bush and squatted down. She peered open the branches with her hands and she saw the little cub.“Hi, you.” She moved to grab him when she noticed something like a scroll attached to a collar she hadn’t seen before.Did the cub have an owner all this while? She removed the scroll and opened it to reveal a small note. “Your kingdom is indeed beautiful ” The note read. Megan got up and scanned the area. She didn’t know who the note could’ve been from but the thought of it made her giddy inside.Someone wrote her a secret note and she wanted to meet this stranger but she didn’t know how.“Thank you. Does he have a name? If you’re a guest in the castle, you could join me for tea this afternoon.”Perhaps if she had tea this noon the stranger would come around. It ha
“I’ve discussed with the priest, he will see us tomorrow in a private meeting.” Richardson said.It was really happening. Richardson was divorcing her.Ten years ago“Do you think you would ever divorce me?” Megan asked. They were returning from their law class.“You always ask such ridiculous questions Megan.” Young Richardson said.“I’m just curious. It is allowed so, I was just wondering.”“You’re my mate.” He said plainly, looking her dead in the eyes.“I love you, Megan.” He added. Megan turned red.It was the first time he ever said that he loved her.Richardson laughed at her reaction.“I do love you, Megan. I can’t imagine a life without you so no, divorcing you will hurt me more than it will hurt you.” He said.Present“Okay.” Megan said numb.“Megan…” Richardson said. “You do understand right?”“Goodnight, your majesty.” She wasn’t going to show him any emotion. He didn’t deserve that.Megan left his office and headed for her quarters, it was already past the usual time she
Word traveled fast in the Jared mansion. The news was that Megan had slapped Richardson’s concubine who everyone now knew was Megan’s friend. The general perception was pity for the queen and disdain for the alpha. However a few people thought Megan was rude and ungrateful towards Aspen and Richardson.Megan however, was more worried about how the visitors from the west would take the rumor.“It’s the word around the castle.” One of Rhode’s aides said to Brian who reported directly to Rhode.“It seems that Luna is losing face amongst her own subjects. I almost feel sorry for her.” Brian said.Rhode felt indignant about the whole situation but there was nothing he could do to help Megan here. He felt all the more motivated to convince her to remarry him.His agenda for the day was simple, discuss with her about future collaborations between their clans. She needed her to see him as someone she could trust.Megan got out of bed and got ready for the day. She was wearing a lilac colored
The next morning, Rosetta and Brianna were drawing Megan’s bath when they heard a ruckus outside.“Is that Aspen, what is she doing in your quarters?”Brianna and Rosetta rushed out of the room.Aspen successfully swiped some gold jars from the hallway where Megan’s room was at.When the cleaners reported it missing, Aspen suggested that they searched everyone present. What Rosetta didn’t know was that Aspen had sent one of her maids to plant a piece of gold on Rosetta.During the search, one of the people searching found the gold on Rosetta.“That can’t be right! I’ve never touched anything in this hallway! I pass through it countless times a day.”“Yes! This is a mistake!” Brianna seconded.Everyone present was starting to murmur. Megan came out of her room, hearing the chaos.“What is the matter?” Everyone bowed. Aspen hated it.“Luna, some mini gold jars and trinkets are missing from the hall. Ms. Aspen suggested we do a search down of everyone who frequents the hallway and we fou
Megan left the garden, her mood now sour. The next morning, Rosetta was fixing pins in Megan’s hair when Richardson barged in.“What has gotten into you?!” He yelled.“Rosetta, please excuse us.”As soon as she left the room, “I don’t follow.” Megan said, looking at her reflection in the mirror.“What has gotten into you Megan?! Why are you so bitter towards Aspen?! You’ve changed!”Megan chuckled.“Changed, your majesty?”“Yes! I thought maybe last night would soften your mind but it seems it’s made up!”“I thought you would remain friends with Aspen!”“So you had sex with me because of Aspen.” Megan felt insulted.“Is it wrong? You have clearly been jealous.”“Why bother? What’s the point if I cannot get pregnant? You could have just kept ignoring my needs. I’ve been just fine.”“I see that now. I certainly regret it.” He spat and left the room.A tear slid down Megan’s face. That was probably the meanest thing he ever said to her. She hoped no one was eavesdropping.“Oh, your highn
Aspen’s parents came to the mansion to see Aspen and Richardson. It was the first time Richardson was ever seeing Aspen’s parents with her.For him, it was awkward. Seeing guests with a woman that wasn’t Megan.Aspen would be his wife soon anyway.“Your majesty.” The baron and the baroness bowed before Richardson.“Please, rise.” Richardson said.Aspen was sitting beside her parents. As she was not yet his wife, she couldn’t sit next to him per their custom.“Thank you for having us, alpha. Your castle is as breathtaking as always.” Baroness Bridget said.“Thank you, Baroness.”The air was awkward, Richardson didn’t want to have to see them but he thought it rude not to see his future in laws.Aspen had pleaded with him to see her parents. She wanted her parents to see the kind of life she was living. In the castle.“We just wanted to see the father of our grandchild.”Richardson gave an awkward smile.“It’s good to meet you both, your daughter is a good woman.”“Thank you, your majes
Jason took her to a part of the city that was busier than the central area where the institute was. There was a lot of music and dancing, very different from where she was from.“Stay close to me.” She heard Jason say through the noise. On reflex, she held his arm which made him laugh.“Stop laughing at me.” She said.“Sorry.”“You happened to come on one of our festival days. I promise it’s not this busy all the time.”“Okay!”Jason led her to what looked like the residential area.He led her to an igloo looking hut and they both entered.“We don’t have any hotels around here, as we never get tourists.” He said as they entered the hut.It was dimly lit and very cozy looking.“I’m not a tourist. I’m here on an official assignment.” Aspen retorted back.“I apologize. It just seemed like you wouldn’t have gotten a place to sleep if I left you there.”“I’m sure I would have been fine.” She snapped back.Jason raised a brow.“I’m sorry.” Aspen apologized, “I just can’t believe they left m
Aspen was woken up from sleep by the smell of fresh bread. She got up and traced where the aroma was coming from.“I didn’t know you had a kitchen.”Jason laughed, “I didn’t exactly give you a tour yesterday.” He started.“I’m aware our houses look like boring huts from the outside but inside, it’s pretty much the same as houses in the East.”“Except the outside bathroom.” Aspen added.“Except the outside bathroom. Though there’s also a reason for that, same as to why our houses look like huts from outside.”“Why?”“The water can make the rooms humid.”“Oh. Which can make it more cold?”“No. Which can make the thick layers we wear very uncomfortable.”“That makes a lot of sense.”“It does, doesn’t it? Here.” He handed her a piece of warm bread and a cup of tea.Aspen sniffed the cup and smiled“Tastes even better I promise.” Aspen took a bite of the bread and her eyes went wide.“There’s no way you made this! I could never get bread this good at home!”Her reaction warmed Jason’s hea
The room instantly became quiet when the door swung open to reveal Megan standing at the entrance. She tried her best to appear brave and unafraid, but it was not an easy task. The disdainful eyes of Lord Fuhler bore down on her in supreme distaste and the cunning eyes of Lord Aldrien look at her from beneath his lashes. She noticed that Geoffrey was back and from the look on Rhode's face he was clearly not happy with it, and that made Megan furious as she vowed to get to the bottom of the problems she was seeing so clearly on the surface.“You summoned me, alpha?” She asked with a curtsy and Lord Aldrien snorted at the act as he stared at her with his beady eyes.“Oh look, her royal highness understands basic courtesy after all.” He exclaimed with a snide edge to his tone, and she could Rhode gripping his chair in anger. No! Wait! She commanded him with the mindlink and he looked at her speculatively before sighing and relaxing..“I'm sorry I barged in here last time.” She apologized
“So, you are getting married?” Rosetta asked with incredulity and Megan chuckled, yeah she could not blame her ladies for not believing their ears. A few days before she had made a whole ass deal out of getting married and now she was accepting it? She could tell they were confused. But she was never going to go back on her Decision.“Yes Rosetta, I already answered this.” Megan laughed in faux exasperating and Rosetta shook her head in amusement.“Well, my word. What do you think, Bri?” She asked the silent Brianna, and Megan turned as well. She was also interested, Brianna had been strangely quiet and she was really worried. She hoped it was nothing serious at all. But to her relief, Brianna gave a faux sigh.“Oh nothing, I was just jealous is all.” She finally confessed, and Megan exchanged amused looks with Rosetta before turning to give her attention to Brianna.“Well jealous of what?” She asked, and Brianna sighed, and nodded at the ring on her finger, causing Megan's eyes to wi
Moving stealthily, he gestured for Aspen to follow him and she did. They were both being careful of course. A single step on the wrong branch could alert the growling villagers that she was right there.Funny how she came to end a threat, but was instead now in a situation where she was actually in danger. She shook her head to remove the little moisture from her eyes. She could not afford to fall in fear now. She could do this. She would go home with her baby intact.“Keep up!” Rudolph snapped, his eyes already yellow, showing that he was already healing. And Aspen sighed in relief. She had no need for a weak wolf, ignoring the fact that she was the one to have put him in the position in the first place.“Alright, fine.” She snapped back, her back bent as she made sure she was concealed by the thick undergrowth of the forest.Together they traveled fast, and soon the woods around Aspen were a blur, and she turned her face to sniff the air. She could smell the smoke of the city. They
Aspen is famously known for her very special ability to make the worst of things. Now she did not do that on purpose, but for some reason it always happens. She was reckless, unthoughtful, and impulsive, and all those things in the worst ways. But as she backed away from these people with the strange eyes that gleamed with feral hunger, she knew that she had made the worst decision yet. Shrinking back, she tried to ignore the stares that Insisted on following her. The ones that cried that she did not belong there with her shiny and fancy clothes. She could see children, wild-eyed and hungry, baring their teeth at her as they let out growls made vicious by the fear of starvation. The public well to her left creaked as a small looking woman with darting eyes drew it open, before flexing a sympathetic yet annoyed gaze on Aspen, and she moved back, desperately searching for her carriage. It seemed her driver had slinked off and left Aspen to her fate, and the thought sent a bitter tast
For the umpteenth time, he imagined marching over to the kingdom of that weakling and stampeding on his throat, ripping out his teeth and claws, and breaking his legs..He was sure that if it ever came to it, he would take Richardson easily. The male had been timid when Rhode entered his Kingdom for the first time. When he had been introduced and stepped up to Richardson, he had realized his aura. He did it subtly, so that everyone in the room would not know what hit them, and for that brief moment where he studied Richardson, he could see the wolf king groan and bared his neck in a show of instant submission, and Rhode could not help the disdain that ran through him.But Megan had been perfect, she had stared straight at him beside her husband, her eyes flashing in warning, and even then he could understand them perfectly. Retreat. Her gaze told him, and he could not help the smile that covered his face after that. Lunas should not have the power to resist a fraction of an alpha's p
Due to the recent announcement and the recent self-consciousness she had developed about her person, Megan did all she could to avoid Rhode, and for a while it was working. She ate with the servants in the kitchen with the excuse of bonding and they adored her for it, proclaiming her the perfect Luna. She memorized Rhode's routine and perfected the art of avoiding him. She was on a roll, really. But that all changed when she bounced out of her bedroom, cradling her heavy stomach still carefully concealed with her heavy brocaded gown, and was suddenly accosted along the forest path by her lovely future husband. And Megan could not help the flush that colored her cheeks as he held her hands and his eyes glowed in triumph.“W_what are you doing?” Megan stammered as she glared up at him. Or at least she wanted to glare but she was intimidated by the animated purple eyes that stared back at her.“Megan!” He exclaimed with a small teasing smile.*So you are still alive! I had no idea!” He l
Aspen felt her world shifting. She had thought, for some reason, that he was only visible to her eyes on the unfortunate days he decided to grace her with his magnanimous presence: note the sarcasm. But she really had not thought that other people saw him. The idea came to her that morning, and despite the doubts, she had wanted to see if she was right at all, and it turned out that she was. Ah hell.“T_the camera! You know him!” She exclaimed triumphantly as she stared at the cook with a disturbing gleam in her eyes. She wanted to go to Richardson the next moment and demanded the head of the cook for being an accomplice in an elaborate conspiracy.“I don't know what you are thinking, young missy. But I do not know that man.” The cook quickly defended, as she stared at the grin on Aspen's face with maximum distrust. But Aspen could handle a little hate. She was not there to make friends after all.If the way to make this strange reporter silent was to silence this cook, then so be it.
Aspen scoffed as she crossed the hallways to her chambers. She was becoming more and more destabilized. And well no one could exactly blame her. She is being threatened, and now her life is in mortal danger. And not to talk of Duke Elric. Aspen sighed as she thought of the Duke with his extremely dubious personality.Sometimes she thought he was on her side, then she got him staring at her with what was definitely a mocking grin on his face, and suddenly she was not sure anymore. If he was on her side, then why did he constantly see the need to laugh? Why did he only show up when he wanted to without giving her a way to summon him. And what was that amused look he had given Richardson?Ugh! She didn't want to think anymore. It was too exhausting. She somehow ended up more confused than before she started. So it was better to stop.Quickly switching her steps to the kitchens, Aspen hurried over with her head held high despite knowing that she was not very favored amongst the staff. De
Richardson knew he had screwed up Royally. He only put the blame on Aspen because there was no one else to take it, and she was stupid enough really. It was not Aspen’s fault, it was his for not having enough backbone to stop the left state counselor from executing a plan that he knew could very well be the death of him and his family. He was trapped from all sides, and even the fae people were beginning to show him disrespect, and when that happened, it was imperative to realize that things were bad. Really bad.Turning to the still gasping Aspen on the floor, he could not bring himself to apologize for his actions. He probably was not even sorry he did what he did. He knew that she was innocent, but it didn't stop him laying his hands on her. And he couldn't help but shudder against the kind of man he was turning into. He could remember putting his hands on Megan too. Megan. Felt like she was light-years away, and the distance was killing him.But it was his fault, his fault he lost
