Avery's POV

I looked at Alpha Red, my mind racing with questions and concerns. "What are you planning on doing next?" I asked him, my voice barely above a whisper.

He hesitated, his eyes narrowing as he considered his response. "I'm not entirely certain," he admitted, "but I have a strong feeling that the food is somehow related to the deaths. We need to be sure before we conclude anything, though."

I nodded, my thoughts already racing ahead to the implications of his words. If the food was indeed the problem, it would mean that the entire community could be at risk. I felt a shiver run down my spine at the thought.

"What's your next step, then?" I asked Alpha Red, my curiosity getting the better of me.

He stood up, his movements decisive. "I'll need to check the food supplies," he said. "See if I can find any common thread or contaminant that could be causing the deaths."

I nodded, my mind already turning over the possibilities. If Alpha Red was right, we could be facing a much bigg

Avery's POV I woke up with a start, my heart racing with fear that Alpha Red had left me again, just like he always did. But as I sat up and looked around, my eyes landed on him, lying beside me, still fast asleep. I let out a sigh of relief, feeling a mix of emotions. I was happy to see him, but I knew he was leaving today to go to the other pack, and I wouldn't see him again for two days.I carefully moved closer to him, not wanting to wake him up. I smiled as I took in his sheer beauty. His jawline and cheekbones were sharp, giving him a deadly and captivating look that not only terrified people but also hypnotized them. I remembered being spellbound by his looks the first day we met, but my feelings were torn when he hurt me.Now, I don't know how to describe my feelings for him. They were complex, a mix of fear, respect, and... something more. I looked at him, taking in the strong lines of his face, the sharp angles of his features. I had been waiting for what felt like an eternity for her to open the door, but there was only silence. The grand hall of the Moon Pack was teeming with life-a cacophony of clinking glasses, laughter, and hushed conversations that filled the air. Roasted meats, fresh bread, and fine wine wafted through the air, almost letting a person forget this wasn't supposed to be a celebration in the first place. At least, not to me.I sat alone at the far edge of the hall, in a dimly lit corner, which incredibly fitted my mood. My stepmother, Serena, floated through the crowd as if she was the grand dame of the evening, her golden gown shimmering under the light of the chandeliers. My father, Alpha Jack Moon, stood tall beside her, laughing with the guests as if the world revolved around them.I swallowed down the bitter lump in my throat as I glared down at the half-eaten fruitcake on the small plate in my hand. Today was supposed to be my day-my twenty-first birthday, my supposed "coming-of-age." Instead of being treated like the star of the evening, I was little more than an afterthought. The p

The night was awfully still, that sort of calm which made every groan of the wooden floor and every rustle of leaves outside a little bit louder. It was weeks since my birthday banquet, but the seer's words hung in the air, there yet not quite there, heavy with implication.I had lain in bed staring out the small window of my room. The crescent moon was low in the sky, casting pale rays that made for macabre shadows across the forest. Yet, there was this real feeling that things were not quite right.A sudden howl ripped through the silence, lowered and menacing.I froze. Then another howl followed. And another. The Bloodhounds. It came upon me in an instant, and a river of fear poured through my veins. The feared Bloodhounds had arrived, oozing their cruelty and unmatched strength.I jumped to my feet, throwing a coat atop my skinny nightdress. The packhouse was in a frenzy; there were all kinds of screams and snarls being shouted. I spilled out into the hall, where people ran both w

Avery's POV As we left the woman's house, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. There were too many unanswered questions, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't quite right.Once we were outside, I finally asked the question that had been bothering me. "Alpha Red, what are you thinking?" I asked, looking up at him with curious eyes.He frowned, his brow furrowed in thought. "It's possible that the boy had a heart attack," he said. "His father died of a heart attack, after all. It could be a genetic condition."I nodded, understanding his line of thinking. But I also pointed out the inconsistencies in the woman's story. "But his mother said he wasn't having any medical or emotional issues that could have led to distress," I said. "She made it sound like he was perfectly healthy, and then he just... died."Alpha Red's expression turned thoughtful, and he nodded slowly. "You're right," he said. I turned to look at Alpha Red, but he was no longer standing beside me. I felt a pang of confusion and curiosity. Where had he gone?I excused myself from my grandfather and left the room, searching for Alpha Red. I walked outside, scanning the area until I spotted him talking to a guard.
