The distant sound of the council bell echoed across the palace grounds, loud and relentless like a warning from the heavens themselves.

The sound made Becca’s stomach twist into a knot she couldn’t untangle, especially when her mind replayed the way Luna Seraphina had looked triumphant in her room earlier.

Her pulse raced, her hands clammy against the fabric of her gown as she and Mira hurried through the long, winding corridors of the palace, the ancient stone walls closing in on either side.

The thick scent of burning cedar from the wall sconces filled her nose as they walked, Mira visibly anxious beside her.

Becca exhaled slowly.

“I don’t like this,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, though she knew Mira heard her.

“I don’t either,” Mira admitted, chewing on her bottom lip. “But whatever it is, we’ll face it.”

Becca gave a small, dry laugh.

“I seem to do a lot of ‘facing things’ lately.”

They turned a corner and almost collided headfirst into a pair of broad figu

Becca couldn’t stop thinking about how Alpha Eugene’s fury had made him seem almost otherworldly, how the raw power that radiated from him in those moments both terrified and enthralled her. The way his eyes had glowed, a dangerous warning, yet his vulnerability beneath it all. "Why did I say that?" Becca thought, turning onto her side, hugging her pillow closer. "Why did I tell him I was here for him?"The words had slipped out before she could stop them, and now they felt foolish—too vulnerable and open. She wasn’t the kind of person who revealed herself so easily, who laid her emotions bare. She groaned inwardly, burying her face in the pillow."What’s wrong with me?" Becca thought, sitting up suddenly, her legs swinging over the edge of the bed. She stood and paced the room, the silence pressing in around her. Her fingers gripped the edge of her desk as she stared out the window, watching the moon as it climbed higher in the night sky. "He’s dangerous. He’s powerful. I shoul

Yet within Max, there was no such happiness His boots echoed against the floor, a slow, heavy rhythm of a man burdened by the thoughts circling his head.He paced with clenched fists and tense shoulders, each stride steeped in regret. His jaw was set tight, the memory of Mira’s eyes—so wounded, so distant—cutting deeper than any blade. "What the hell were you thinking?"He had gone too far. The gentle clink of glass vials echoed softly as Becca moved with calm precision, grinding a blend of lavender and some plants into a fine powder with her mortar and pestle. Her hands were steady, purposeful, her every movement honed by years of experience and a heart that had long committed itself to the art of healing others. The quiet was only broken by the occasional rustle and the whisper of Mira’s steps as she moved around the room like a restless spirit. She worked efficiently—organizing the apothecary jars, relabeling bottles, wiping clean the already spotless shelves—but there was a tension in her shoulders, a storm bottled behind her carefully composed expression.Becca didn’t miss

The hallways of the mansion were unusually quiet, except for the faint sound of Mira’s soft footsteps. The collision was sudden, her body crashing into a broad chest, and the basket of laundry flew from her hands, clothes scattering across the polished stone floor."Oh!"
