J.D. stood and walked straight toward Gavin, arms open wide. “Let’s go, my man. Bring it, big guy. Bros hug, and you’re one of the bros now.”
Gavin’s eyes widened as J.D. wrapped his arms around him and pounded him on the back. He seemed taken aback by the warm welcome. His eyes slid over to me and locked on my face.
I needed to make a move before things got even more awkward. I had to keep up the act. With every fiber of my being, I hoped and prayed that Gavin wasn’t here to somehow derail my chances at protecting my family.
Standing and straightening my clothes, I plastered a massive fake smile onto my face and strutted over to Gavin, sticking my hand out to shake his.
“Gavin? I’m Kira. Nice to meet you,” I said. I sounded calm and confident, but an icy trickle of fear slithered up my spine.
He disentangled himself from J.D. and turned to face me. He looked a lot like Jayson, but I barely knew Gavin. He hadn’t been around much while Jayson and I had been dating. He was always away at school. When he was around, he was always scowling at Jayson or off by himself. He’d been reserved and quiet. The last time I laid eyes on him was at the disaster of the mating ceremony. He’d looked entirely disinterested to be there. Now he was looking at me with a fire and intensity that puzzled me.
Gavin took my hand in his. “Good to meet you, Kira.” There was a mischievous glimmer in his eye when he spoke.
That look made my stomach somersault. More lies, more secrets, more things I had to keep covered up. This show was getting more stressful by the second.
Gavin pulled my hand up to his lips and kissed my fingers. “Very good to meet you, I should say.”
From behind me, I heard Omar grumbling something, obviously unhappy with the affection Gavin was showing me.
Von, on the other hand, looked thrilled. “Here less than five minutes and already trying to sweep Kira off her feet? Aggressive. It’s fantastic.”
I quickly pulled my hand away, trying to lighten the tension filling the room. Even though my back was to him, I was hyper-aware of Wyatt watching.
“I’m sorry you missed out on the fun so far,” I said. “We fought ghosts this morning. Um, if you don’t mind my asking, what kept you from joining earlier?”
It was my best attempt at subtlety. He had to have a good reason. Why else would the showrunners allow a contestant to join this late?
Gavin looked me dead in the eye. “Yeah, well, it wasn’t a great time. The producers allowed me a few days to get everything in order.”
“Get what in order?” I asked sweetly, not understanding what he was talking about.
Gavin glanced over his shoulder at the hovering camera, then back to me. “The alpha of my pack, my father, was murdered. My brother and I have been dealing with the fallout.”
It was like I’d been kicked in the chest. His dad was dead? Someone had murdered Jayson’s father? Alphas were never murdered in cold blood like that. I was so astonished that a shocked squeak escaped my lips. A smattering of murmurs broke out around the room as the other alphas processed the information.
Ignoring all of us, Gavin looked into my eyes and said, “Being away from here was inconvenient because all I want to do is win The Reject Project and take you as my fated mate, Kira.”
His sincerity freaked me out a little bit, to be honest. I could practically hear Wyatt’s teeth grinding.
Smiling at Gavin, I said, “Well, I wish you my best. Maybe you will.” I raised my eyebrow at him seductively, hoping the cameras got a good shot of it. It made me feel a little dirty, but the show had to go on.
Von saved me by interrupting the conversation. “Along with introducing Gavin, I came to give you all an update. Since we’ve already had a couple of eliminations this week, the Arena Match will happen tomorrow. I’m sure all of our alphas have had that day circled on their calendars since meeting the lovely Kira.
“Two contestants will enter the arena. Whoever wins will get to spend a magical night with Kira in the mating chamber.” Von waggled his eyebrows suggestively.
If I was nervous before, I was now on the verge of a panic attack. The other alphas were all studying me. Some, like Omar and Tate, were staring at me like I was a piece of meat to be devoured. Others, like J.D. and Abel, looked nervous. Wyatt was the only one who wasn’t looking at me—he was staring at Von like he wanted to rip him to pieces.
I cleared my throat and touched Von’s wrist. “Forgive my ignorance, but how are the contestants chosen?”
Von laughed and put an arm around me. “Oh, dear Kira, by fan voting, of course.”
“Fan voting?” I asked.
“Yes. Our audience gets to have a say in how things go down.” He touched his finger to the tip of my nose. “But don’t worry your little head. I’m sure you’ve grown attached to your alphas by now, and I want to let you know that the Arena Match is not necessarily a duel to the death. It is, however, very exciting.” He released me and clasped his hands together. “Our viewers are voting online right now. The final tally should be ready later today. Take the afternoon to relax. I’m sure you all need it after this morning’s fun.”
Von waved a hand over his bracelet. The cameras shut off and floated away. “Whew. What an exciting day already,” he said. “I’ll leave you all to get to know our new contestant. We’ll let everyone know when the votes are in.”
Von left us all alone. I expected the others to disperse quickly once he was gone, but all the guys hung around. I knew why within seconds. They wanted to get dirt on Gavin.
J.D. was the first to launch into questions. “So, what pack are you from?”“Ninth,” Gavin said.“What’s the location? I’ve never met someone from the Ninth Pack.”Gavin sighed. “Eastern Wilds, same as Eleventh Pack.”He didn’t seem excited to answer questions. While J.D. continued to badger him, Gavin stared across the room at Wyatt and Leif, who were standing together. Every few seconds, Gavin’s gaze swiveled toward me, and I couldn’t miss how he looked at me. The only way to describe it was lustful, and that made me even more uncomfortable. Had there been something stewing under the surface all the years I was promised to his brother?“Will you or your brother be alpha now?” J.D. asked.Gavin shook his head. “I’m not allowed to be alpha. My brother Jayson will take that role.”Jayson was alpha of the Ninth Pack? That was weird to contemplate. Their dad had always been such a strong presence—of course he had after being alpha for nearly forty years. He’d taken over the role at eighte
He was goading me, and then he nonchalantly told everyone that Kira couldn’t shift. What was he thinking? I didn’t know what he was trying to do, but whatever it was, the mood of the room had gone off the rails. Everyone was silent and staring at Kira. Some of them looked confused, and others looked outright angry.I slowly got to my feet, unsure how things were going to go from there. I didn’t think Kira was in danger, but I didn’t want to take the risk.Kira did exactly what I thought she’d do. Noticing the looks the guys were giving her, she lifted her chin and told everyone exactly what was going on.“He’s right,” she said indignantly, glaring at Gavin. His face clouded over as he realized he’d made a misstep. He looked surprised that everyone didn’t already know. His ignorance wasn’t enough to quell my rage. Unless you were absolutely certain about something like that, you kept your damn mouth shut. It showed me he was just as much of an idiot as his older brother. Which meant he
“I’ll do any challenge you want, Omar. I’d be more than happy to complete any task involving shifting, and I’ll complete it any way I see fit. I may not be able to shift, but at least I’m not a narrow-minded dick who got sent here for breaking his fated mate’s heart by going balls-deep in some vampire chick.”“Oh, snap!” J.D. said and put a fist to his mouth to cover his grin.Leif looked mortified and pointed at Omar. “You got rejected for being a cheater? You actually cheated on your fated mate?”That was a big no-no in our culture. The fated-mate pairing was a sacred thing that was not to be defiled. It was part of why Gavin’s brother had rejected Kira. He’d refused to believe the drug had made her sexually attack me. Cheating on a fated mate was tantamount to spitting in the eye of the Moon Goddess herself. The others knew the same thing, and the whole room was looking at Omar with differing levels of disgust and disappointment.Unrepentant, Omar gave a low growl and swept his eye
Ignoring my question, he said, “You know, all these years, I always thought you were hunting Kira. I never thought you’d go this far to win her over, though.”I growled. “We aren’t talking about me. I asked you a question. What are you doing here?”“None of your business. Besides, I should be asking you the same thing. You’re a lone wolf. No official pack. I thought every alpha had to be aligned with a pack to be cast.”“It’s not an official rule, more a guideline they can overlook when they want to,” I said with a shrug, hoping he didn’t press for more details.Gavin sneered. “Well, isn’t that lucky.”Stepping even closer to him, I looked him in the eye. “You know, I’ve never liked your family. The Fells have always acted like they were better than they are. You guys pretend you’re as important as the First or Second packs, but you’re out there in the Eastern Wilds, just like Kira’s pack. Your family ruined Kira’s life out in the real world, and I’ll be damned if I let you ruin her c
“Let me get you ready. That way, you can get your mind off it. Did they say what you should wear?”I shook my head. “All Von said was ‘get ready.’” I shrugged.“All right, we’ll go with the same survival gear you used in the swamp. Can’t go wrong with that. It’ll give you a little protection, anyway.”Zoe got my gear ready, then helped me get dressed. She must have used magic to clean them while I was at lunch. The garments were no longer caked in mud, dirt, and blood. Before she could work on my hair, there was a knock at the door.“Who is that?” Zoe asked.“No clue. I’ll check.”By the time I made it to the door, I was even more irritated. As I unlocked the door, I swore that if it was Von, I’d chase his ass down the hall with a sharpened stake. It wasn’t him, though. It was one of the witches. She smiled at me as the door swung open. “Oh, good. You’ve already gotten prepared,” she said when she saw my attire.“Yes, for tonight. Can I help you with something? I was hoping to rest a
I flinched in pain as the wolfsbane stung and burned my fingers, hands, and forearms. Once the rope was saturated enough, I pulled them back out, breathing a sigh of relief as the pain abated to that of a minor sunburn. My sacrifice was worth it, though. The ropes, laden with water, were looser and easier to stretch. It took nearly five minutes, but I managed to free my wrists. Rubbing them, I basked in my ingenuity for a few seconds before doing the same thing to my ankles. The sensation was equally agonizing, but knowing that it would work eased the sting a bit. In minutes, I was totally free and standing on the rock, letting my body heal. Now, I needed to find a way off this stupid rock. The moon had already risen, and I could see it reflected in the water as I racked my brain for ideas. It was in the water that I saw the reflection of massive wings gliding silently down from the sky toward me. I frowned, then I registered the shape and knew exactly what was coming. My reflexes kic
Wyatt fought well until one wolf attacked from his blind side. I sucked in a breath as his flesh tore away, leaving a bloody gash. Wyatt yowled, and the second feral took the opening. It grabbed Wyatt by his throat and slung him into the pond.Instantly thrashing to the surface back in his human form, Wyatt let out a bloodcurdling scream as the wolfsbane soaked into his skin. The wolves on the edge of the pond looked on in silence as Wyatt gagged and spat the poisoned water from his mouth. My nails dug into my palms as I watched him struggle. I was begging him, in hushed whispers, to swim to the edge.“Swim, Wyatt. You have to swim. Hurry.”If he heard me, he made no attempt to do what I wanted. His arms slowed, and I saw the pain in his face turn to agony, then he began to slip under. His body succumbed to the poison. I was about to watch Wyatt drown right in front of me.The thought sent a jolt of terror and heartache through me. I shuddered and hit my knees, watching him give a few
Safe for the moment, I collapsed onto the mud beside Wyatt. My body trembled as it tried to heal from the wolfsbane poisoning. Wyatt looked terrible. Along with the poison and the awful injury from the feral, it looked like he’d sustained a lot of other wounds in his fight to find me.I jerked my snout toward the jungle as more battle sounds reached my ears—human shouts, the howls of wolves, the hissing of vampires. A deep, thunderous scream of a ghost was muted by the ear-splitting screech of a banshee across the pond. I needed to get Wyatt out of there. The wolfsbane had soaked into his wounds and was preventing him from healing. I needed to get him to the mansion and the healers.I tried to shift back so I could carry him to safety, but my wolf flat-out refused. She’d been locked away long enough that she wasn’t giving me control. I tried to focus, demanding that she let me shift back, but it was like talking to a brick wall. Instead, now that my legs had regained some function, I
