I nodded grimly. “She did.”
Kolton sprinted inside. Grudgingly, I turned and followed him. All I wanted was to go after Kira, but that would have to wait. Unless I could force Zoe to teleport me to Kira, it would take hours for me to get to Fangmore. By then, she would have already done what she’d gone to do.
“Zoe?” Kolton shouted.
I trudged into the house, but the sound of paws on gravel interrupted my stride. Looking over my shoulder, I saw two wolves sprinting down the driveway. Kira’s parents. Sighing, I followed after Kolton. I wasn’t in the mood to break the news to them.
I found Zoe and Kolton in the kitchen. If anything, Kolton looked even more tired and haggard. Zoe’s face was flushed with supreme sorrow. She’d obviously confirmed what I’d told Kolton. My friend looked a solid two decades older than he had a few minutes ago. He understood the dangers of the show. He was the only person I’d met who hated the show as much as I did.
Alpha Durst and his mate walked in. They looked irate. Zoe’s assumption that they had been trying to figure out who had vandalized Kira’s car was probably correct.
“What’s all this?” Kira’s father asked, his face going even darker.
Kolton looked up at him, a look of utter and complete devastation on his face. “Dad…Kira’s gone.”
Alpha Durst took a step forward, looking wary. “Gone? Gone where?”
Kolton looked like he was going to vomit. “She’s gone to Fangmore City. She’s auditioning for The Reject Project.”
Surprisingly—shockingly—Kira’s father’s face broke into a joyous smile. I frowned, horrified at his reaction.
“She did? She really did that?” The pride in his voice turned my stomach.
Kolton had the same look on his face that I had. Horror and disbelief. “Yes, Dad. Why the hell do you look so happy?”
Het shook his head. “She’s trying to bring honor back to us. I never even thought of it. If I had, I would have suggested it myself.” He pumped his fist like he’d won a hand of cards. “That’s my girl,” he whispered.
It took every ounce of my willpower not to slap the shit out of the man right then and there. Didn’t he understand that Kira was going to her death? If she got on the show, the odds of her returning were probably less than ten percent. It was the grotesque allure of the program.
Alpha Durst looked up at the three of us, obviously confused why Kolton, Zoe, and I looked somber. “Why do you all look like that? Aren’t you proud of Kira? She’s finally putting her pack first.”
“Finally?” Kolton barked. “She’s always putting the pack first, Dad. What the hell are you on about?”
His father nodded, but it was more a placating gesture than anything. “Yes, Kolton, of course. Still, if she’d tried to be closer to Jayson, tried to strengthen their relationship, he might not have rejected her.” His eyes flicked to me with a quick flash of irritation that he concealed quickly. I knew he was pissed at me, but he also understood that what happened had been caused by a drug and not through willing actions on my or Kira’s part.
I’d need to be careful around him for some time. That would be difficult, since it seemed like Kolton and I cared more about her safety than her own parents did.
“Things could have gone differently,” he went on. “Now? We’re a laughingstock. Totally gutted. Our influence has all but dissipated like crazy in the last week. If a war broke out among packs now, no one would align with us. We’d be crushed. This is her chance. Our chance. The power and prestige? The blessing of Heline herself? It’s all we could ever ask for.”
Kira’s mother looked much less excited. She patted his shoulder. “Yes, dear, but we have to remember that hundreds of rejected mates from all over the country will be trying to get on that show. She probably won’t even get picked. We have bigger things to worry about than the show.”
“Like what?” I said, my anger amping up by the second.
Kira’s father seemed to come back to reality, and his face went grim.
“Well,” Kira’s mother went on, “we need to comfort Kira when she gets home. We also need to figure out how to deal with the other Eleventh families. They’re all calling for her to be banished. It’s tradition. A rejected fated mate has always been removed from the pack. The other families think we are bucking tradition because she’s the daughter of the alpha.”
“Oh, for fuck’s sake,” I hissed and stomped out.
I couldn’t stand being in that house any longer. I’d always respected Kira’s father and had been grateful that he’d let my pack reside in his lands. But all that gratitude and respect vanished when I’d seen his greed and excitement at the prospect of his daughter participating in a show where the odds were good that she’d die. Yes, his pack had lost a ton of influence and would be in dire straits if the rumored war actually happened, but she was his only daughter.
My only option was to make sure Kira didn’t get on the show. Her mother was right—the odds were low for her to get chosen. The prize money, blessings, and fame that came from being on The Reject Project ensured tons of women would apply. But even so, the probability was low, not zero. And I knew that if she did get on that show, I’d have to do something just as crazy.
I’d spent years saving Kira from danger. No way in hell was I gonna stop now. If she managed to succeed with this psychotic venture, I’d need to be there to drag her butt back to safety. Like I had dozens of times before.
Chapter 9KiraI hated Fangmore City. It was so busy, like barely contained chaos. The unending movement and activity reminded me of a bag of snakes. I never fit in when I was there, even though over eighty percent of the population were wolf shifters.Perhaps that was why I hated it so much. All along the streets and alleys, shifters padded or sprinted along, getting where they needed to go in their wolf form. It made the giant city eerily quiet. There was none of the noise pollution from cars and buses that human or mixed cities had. Seeing them go about their day as wolves reminded me of what I was missing. Regardless of whether or not it was my decision, it was always a sore spot.Zoe had teleported me to a spot a few blocks from the studio offices where the auditions were being held. That forced me to walk the rest of the way. The sounds of wolf feet on pavement, the panting of breath, and the smell of fur gave me the feeling of being inexplicably out of place.A massive bus pull
Gripping my fingers together, I squeezed my hands between my knees to keep from fidgeting. I was fighting to prevent my mind from going down a dark rabbit hole full of hopelessness and despair. There would be dozens of women fighting for the coveted role on the show, but I was the strongest. I knew I was. No matter what it took, I would make this work. I had no other choice. Nothing else would bring pride and honor back to my pack.“Kira Durst,” a voice called out.My head snapped up in surprise. The door beside the security guy had opened. A small, bespectacled woman stood there, looking down at a clipboard. Before my body could freeze in fear, I leaped to my feet.“Here,” I said, walking toward her.She glanced up from the clipboard, gave me a quick once-over, then shrugged. “This way.”I followed after her, and the door shut behind me. I felt strange, like I’d been cut off or crossed over into another world. It sent my stomach into nauseous flips. There was no going back now. I was
Was that a smile I detected? I tried to convince myself it was a good sign. Hope started to flare in my chest, pushing back against the despair that had been growing in my gut from the moment Jayson rejected me.The half-demon raised his head, sweeping his eyes up and down my body once more. “There is an entrance fee for all contestants, including the lead. You do realize that. Is that something you can afford?”He must have been referring to my old T-shirt and jeans. The decision to come here had been spur-of-the-moment and desperate enough that I hadn’t even thought to change into something nicer like the other women had. Gods, I knew the fee was steep. I’d checked my account in the waiting room to ensure I could pay it. It would basically deplete my savings, but I could swing it. Barely. With a nod, I said, “That’s no problem. I can pay.” Throwing caution to the wind, I added, “Besides, I’m going to win. What’s a little money now when I’ll have that much more at the end?”“Ooh.” Th
I stiffened at that but forced myself to nod. “I am.”He studied me for a few more moments, then gave a little shrug. “I’ll put your name in the running. That’s all I can promise.”“But she can’t shift,” the female judge said, looking scandalized. The mysterious man’s head jerked toward her, all good nature fleeing his face. “Did I ask your opinion? Did I even ask to hear your voice?” Ice dripped from every word. The woman immediately bowed her head, her eyes locking on the desk. “No, sir. I’m sorry.”Straightening his lapels, he turned back to me, the calm smile returning as though nothing had happened.“As this season will have male alpha shifters competing for a single female, you will be the only woman on the show if you are chosen. Along with the entry fee, you will be required to bring your own stylist. I recommend having someone picked out in case you are cast.” He glanced at my slovenly attire. “We don’t want our leading lady to look like a hobo.” He nodded toward the door. “T
Fortunately, later in the evening, I had a breakthrough. I caught a faint waft of what I was looking for near the entrance of a bar. I’d know Kira’s smell anywhere: hints of vanilla and honeysuckle, an undertone of seawater and birch bark, with the smallest hint of rose water. My heart stuttered when I caught it, and my feet instinctually led me toward the scent.Music assaulted my ears as I stepped into the bar. It was barely past eight, but the place was packed. The deep bass thumped so strongly, it resonated in my chest. Colored lights flashed and strobed around the bar and dance floor. I was already in a shit mood, and this place did little to appease me.With everything going on in her life, Kira had decided clubbing was the best way to let off steam? Her life was on the line, and she was getting drunk in a bar? It made no sense. She was usually reserved and rigid. It wasn’t like her to hang out in a place like this, unless she was on assignment. But she also had what I considere
She cupped a hand to her ear and squinted. “I’m sorry? The Preachy Quartet? Is that some religious acapella band you’re in? It’s so loud, I can’t hear you.”“Zoe, for fuck’s sake. Can’t you…”I trailed off as I glanced over and saw Kira. The crowd had parted, and I glimpsed her getting hot and heavy with some guy on the dance floor. She had her arms around the guy’s neck, and he had his wrapped around her waist, his fingers digging into her ass as they gyrated. Even in the flashing lights, I could see the outline of his hard-on against his pants. Before I knew what I was doing, I was on the dance floor, pulling Kira away from the guy. I was unreasonably angry, and I didn’t really understand why, but I despised seeing another man’s hands on her. It set me off in a way I’d never experienced before.“Are you insane? What the hell is wrong with you?” I asked Kira. When she looked at me, I could see the alcohol had started to affect her. Her eyes had the soft, glazed look of someone who wa
Kira moaned and kissed me again as the elevator doors opened. Frantically, we more or less ran down the hall to the room. Kira fumbled the key in the lock, and finally, the door opened.I slammed the door shut, then yanked her top off even as I lifted her and tossed her on the bed. I grabbed the tiny shorts molded to her body and slid them off in one quick movement, along with her thong. She gasped as I flipped her onto her stomach, lifted her hips, and buried my face in her pussy.I slipped my tongue into her, and the taste of her almost had me exploding. Kira clutched the sheets and groaned as I fucked her with my tongue. Sliding into her, then flicking across her clit, then up to circle her asshole, and back again. Over and over. Heat flooded from her pussy, the taste delectable.“Gods, eat me, make me fucking come, Wyatt,” Kira moaned, thrusting her hips back into my face.I pulled my face and rubbed a finger over her clit. “I’m gonna make you come so hard.”Kira looked over her s
I rolled onto my side and looked at her. Kira was on the verge of tears. My post-coital bliss vanished, replaced with icy fear. Had I done something wrong? All I’d wanted was to make her feel what I felt. The last thing I wanted to do was upset her. When she looked at me, I could see that wasn’t it. She opened her mouth to say something but stopped as though frozen with indecision. A tear slipped down her cheek, and without thinking, I reached out and wiped it away. Kira closed her mouth and stared at me.My heart twisted as I watched her throw up the barriers and walls that had always stood between us. She sat up, squaring her shoulders and lifting her chin. Without a single hint of what she’d been about to say, she got up and started searching for her clothes that lay strewn across the room.“Let’s forget this happened.” She didn’t even look at me as she spoke.“Wait, what?” I said, pulling the sheets over my nakedness, suddenly ashamed. With an overly dramatic sigh, Kira turned, he
