Chapter 5

Klaus's POV

I hate unnecessary bothers; usually, I leave the early morning surveillance rounds to my enforcers Theo and Mark, but I heard a war broke out at the neighboring eastern clan moon festival, and a whole pack was wiped out. I wouldn't put it past some foolish wolves to try something as foolish as loitering in my territory. They just never learn.

I guess it was a good idea not getting involved with the Eastern Pack and refusing their invitation. Sharing a border doesn't automatically mean we have to be friendly or become alliances. I bet Theo will win the bet on the advantages of rejecting the invitation. Goddess knows just how much trouble we would have been dragged into.

I should have ignored the couple fighting since they looked to be having an argument rather than spying or trying to get into the territory, but something about the defeat in the feature of the woman held me back.

She looked so pitiful I just had to interfere, and I don't like arrogant foolish wolves.

“What the hell are you doing, threatening someone in my territory?“

She is mine, he replied tenaciously.

“Are you sure? because this female looks almost too unwilling to be yours.”

“That is no business of yours,” he retorted.

The audacity to claim an unwilling female as his. He must really have a death wish.

From the arrogance, he was obviously an Alpha. I could easily make him submit with my level of dominance. But I promised Theo I wouldn't go on rampage and cause unnecessary troubles to the pack, yet everything about this male makes me want to gut him.

I walked up to him close enough before he took a step back. He is either brave or insanely stupid. But toying with him is just as fun.

“I see, but the problem is that you are both on my territory, so I can decide to rip of your throat or tear you limb by limb, and no one will question my actions. Don't you think so too?” I jeered

“Do you think the Eastern Packs will just accept it if anything were to happen to an Alpha by a Southern Wolf?” he replied, a proud glint in his eyes.

I almost wanted to laugh at his naivety; whatever made him believe I cared about avoiding wars, he should be especially thankful to Theo. Since I'm not one to break a promise.

“I wouldn't mind using you as an example, Alpha or not; you should have known better than tempting me on my territory, so now I get to decide what I do to the both of you. You know quite well that I'm not known for my gracious nature.

So while I'm still being nice, leave the female and run away from here before I change my mind.”

I stared at the fragile-looking female on the ground and tried to ignore the strange feeling of protectiveness that has been tugging at me.

The male was still busy weighing his decision; I was quite sure my reputation as the mad wolf preceded me, which is why I knew this male would not try to fight for this female against his life. Worthless male.

“I am not leaving her behind,” he said with a smirk.

“Even you do not get to come between a wolf and his mate; that is a crime on its own.”

That took me by surprise.

“Mates? You don't seem like mates; neither of you marked each other, and your female here seems to want to disappear to a world where you do not exist. But why don't I confirm from her if that is true?”

The female has been silent since I bumped into them. eyes cast down like she had given up fighting and accepted her fate. She looked so broken.

The urge to wrap her in my arms and make her feel safe was annoyingly clouding my senses.

“Is this male your mate?” I asked, my voice coming out gentler than I had intended.

She shook her head, and that was all I needed.

“You dare to lie to me; you must really have a death wish.”

"Fine,” he spat. Backing away from me.

“This isn't over. I will officially come for her, and you better hand her over to me. She is mine.”

“We will see about that.”

“How is she doing? Is she awake now?” I asked, annoyed at how desperate I sound.

“Alpha coming here every 10 minutes will not automatically wake her up. She is still passed out, mostly from exhaustion. But she will be okay.” Caleb replied

“You seem almost too worried about her Alpha; is there something you are not telling us?” Mark asked, exchanging a weird look with Caleb, the pack healer. While Theo is busy giggling like I was being ridiculous.

"Like I said, I just need to question her and know why she was in the situation I found her.”

“For someone who sees any breathing soul from the East Pack as a spy, you not only brought in a strange female into the pack; you have been pacing around anxiously, and you have asked me how she is doing five times in an hour after I already told you she fainted out of exhaustion.” Caleb replied.

“Are you saying it would have been better to leave a fainted female unprotected by the pack border? I only did what any respectable male would do, and it is my duty as Alpha to protect.” I answered defensively.

“What I indirectly mean is, this is the first time I have seen you this worried and agitated for a female since Yvette left.”

I could see Caleb and Theo visibly stiffen at the mention of her name, warily checking how I would respond to it this time.

I shot Mark a death glare, and he lowered his head in silent apology.

“That was wrong of me; I'm sorry, Alpha.”

I was barely paying attention to him; I was more shocked by the reaction of my wolf. He has been strange all morning, usually at the mention of Yve. He becomes uncontrollable. But ever since I met that delicate, fragile-looking woman, my emotions have been all over the place.

Was I really worried for her? My wolf, who has been an anxious mess for years ever since Yve left, suddenly relaxed and was cozying around in her scent when she was in my arms.

And the urge to protect her—be by her side.

I hope this is not what I am thinking.
