The earth shattered around us. I screamed out for Darina and Sanda but couldn’t hear my own voice. No! This couldn’t be happening. Blinded by smoke I searched for them, falling over bodies, disorientated, heart pounding wildly. The hope in finding my mates fading with every breath I took.

‘Son!’ Strong arms surrounded me. Zane. I heard his voice in my mind. He picked me up like I weighed nothing and carried me away.

‘No! Put me down! Put me down! I must find them.’ I yelled back through the link.

Outside I gasped in deep breaths of fresh air to clear my lungs. My eyes burned like hellfire, and bloody tears streamed down my face. With a growl I turned to run back into the destroyed building. A brick wall stopped me.

“Nico! Stop, Anthony’s got them.” I heard Zane’s voice as if he were talking beneath the ocean. It took me a minute to register what he said.

“Where?” I swung around, my eyes searching.

Zane pointed to where they lay next to each other on the ground next to the SUV. I
