"I need everyone at the meeting table NOW!" Micha barked, making Venera jump. He had burst into the lab in a flurry of ashy blonde hair, wearing the most wrinkled suit in the country.
Despite the fact he couldn't call an official meeting, everyone obliged. News from Micha was always valuable, so the rest of the 10 wasted no time getting to the head table.
The lab was overly crowded these days. For most of the 10 there wasn't any work outside at the moment. Some were sprawled on bean bags in the middle of the room, while Sabrina lay on the black stone floor, laughing at the boys training in the fitness corner.
"The prince has finally decided to marry." he paused for a second to let the information sink in. "They will be announcing the 11 selected girls in a few hours on Channel 3. We need to decide if we can use this to our advantage somehow. I sadly couldn't get any information on the girls or their transportation to the palace."
After Micha was done laying out potential ideas he had everyone look up to Dan for the final judgement. He didn't notice their stares for a moment, his eyes were locked in a silent conversation with Venera. He finally peeled them off her and addressed all of them.
"We aren't doing anything. It is too risky to put a 3 week deadline on a plan. Even if we sent a chip into the palace."
When he mentioned the chips, Venera's brother, Luca, who was sitting next to Micha, immediately reached for his ankle. He isn't used to his chip replica yet. He is still too scared he will get caught with it. The 10 were able to finally take his chip out just weeks prior. Most of them had theirs either deactivated or spoofed for years now, but Luca was the first to have his chip fully removed.
"Even if we find a way into the palace, having a 3 week deadline for whatever we think up, it will be a big gamble. We proceed like this isn't happening. We have gotten too far to risk it all on this," he concluded.
Dan's words were final and everyone stood up to get back to their stations. The twins, Netta and Nat went after Micha to inquire him further.
Venera headed to Dan, who was the only one still sitting at the table, lost in thought. She leaned on his chair, he snapped out of it. He whipped his head and locks of dirt brown hair whipped Venera's face.
Dan stood and hooked his hand in Venera's elbow, tugging her away from the table and towards his workstation.
"Are we going to your place for the show, or do you want to stay here and watch it with the rest?" he asked Venera.
"I want to watch it at home," she said. Dan nodded and they both turned away, rushing to clean up their stations.
It was very important to keep them as clean as possible. Venera's station was always the most well kept. Organizing her experiments was key when it came to her chemicals and medicines. Every bottle, jar, and ampoule were neatly labeled and arranged into a box of similar purpose substances. Then the boxes went on lines of shelves over her desk. She closed her laptop and put back the box she had been working on before the announcement.
Venera had to screw the lids on all the other ingredient containers and put most of them in her refrigerator. She wiped down her black desk and took the trash bag with her on the way out. Dan was waiting for her at the door and they both dove into the metal tube that got them to the balcony of the abandoned first-floor apartment below the lab, from which they jumped down into the alleyway. Venera threw her trash into the container on the side of the building and the two of them made their way through to the street.
It was an early afternoon. The weak wind caressed their arms and the sun lazily illuminated their skin. The streets were mostly empty, a few families with younger kids wandered about, enjoying the late spring weather. Dan pulled Venera to the stand of a churro vendor on the main street and they got some to bring back to Venera's apartment.
Once they stepped into the apartment, Dan immediately jumped on the couch and nearly knocked over one of Venera's plants.
"Watch it!" hissed Venera as she made her way across the room and threw him the TV remote.
"It's brown anyway, what will some dirt change?" he snickered as he was setting up the TV. Venera ignored him, went over to pop some popcorn, and got the churros onto plates for them.
The announcement was starting just as the microwave beeped. Venera rushed over with the popcorn to see the show hosts Molly Millions and Derek Debermann starting their segment on the prince and his approaching marriage.
"This is breaking news for the country. The prince has held off on marriage for longer than we expected. It is customary to start as soon as the prince turns 18, but prince Felix had held off for nearly a year. His 19th birthday is coming up in 2 months," the hosts were filling in the public on the dealing of the palace. Most common people didn't care about the monarchy at all.
Molly and Derek were both wearing inflatable crowns and a slideshow of pictures of the prince was playing on the screen as well. Molly's crown kept slipping off due to her pink wig and Derek kept teasing her about not being princess material.
The hosts moved on to shooting facts at the audience about the prince and his likes and dislikes. They mentioned his favorite color is blue and Dan smirked.
"I told you, I didn't lie to you when you dyed your hair blue," he laughed and wrapped a strand of Venera's hair on his finger.
Venera smiled but pulled her hair back. This kind of banter is why the two were such good friends. It allowed them to be honest with each other, but also make each other do crazy things. Like convincing each other to dye their hair different colors for the stupidest reasons. Dan's hair is now brown because of Venera convincing him that being blonde makes him stand out too much. And he convinced Venera she needed to dye hers blue, because it is the prince's favorite color.
"Here we have a picture of Prince Felix, he recently had laser eye surgery to get rid of his glasses, certainly in anticipation for his princess," noted Molly showing before and after pictures of the prince.
"Now his striking green eyes can certainly pop, am I right Molly?" Derek threw back.
"They do indeed suit his auburn hair. He is certainly handsome." Molly noted.
"Did they really just say that or was I imagining it? Why is this so cringy!" Venera exclaimed and both of them started belly laughing.
After talking about the prince, they started talking about what qualities a princess should possess. Dan took Venera's notebook from the coffee table in front of them and started writing them down. There was a poll in the magazine last week about it and the hosts were trying to guess what the audience had voted.
"A princess should be educated!" Molly called out.
"A princess should be, um, beautiful!" called out Derek.
A princess should be...
Humble
Polite
Caring
Respectful
Independent
"Hey, V, you tick all but one, you know?" noted Dan.
"Oh, yeah? Which one do I not tick?" Venera asked sheepishly.
Dan's face split into a grin. "Girl, you haven't been humble a day in your life!" Venera snorted, helpless to stop the contagious laughter that caught them up once more.
"Shush, they are starting the announcement, I want to test my hypothesis." Venera cut off.
Venera's hypothesis was simple: she wanted to know if the girls were a random sample and if the prince had a type and what was similar between all of them.
They started drawing names out of the big glass ball on the stage and reading the names of the girls, followed by a slideshow split screen with pictures of the girl that was drawn and one of the hosts reading out information about her.
The first 5 girls were all blonde and daughters of remarkable people. Venera was smelling a correct theory, then it all crashed down with girl number 6, black hair, short, and a daughter of one of the king's advisors.
Venera was still pondering on the previous girl when blue hair flashed on the TV.
"Venera Vorobyova, 18."
Pictures of Venera with different hair colors were being shown on national tv. Dan's jaw dropped. He swiveled his head, looking from Venera in the room and the Venera on the TV.
"She graduated from ASBSOS last year with honors and majored in international relations and history. She is currently a translator here in the capital. She has translated numerous books in the last year and recently translated our favorite new guilty pleasure Russian tv series, Kitchen. Her hobbies include gardening and learning languages," Molly Millions announced.
Time froze for Venera. The look in her eyes was getting more and more concerned.
She then looked at Dan and the same confusion was all over his face.
Luca burst through the door and was about to say something when he saw that the two were also watching the broadcast. "Venera, they'll be here to pick you up. We don't know when, but you have to get ready to be taken to the palace. Make sure your chip is in order and take anything you might need. We need to think about how we can use this to our advantage. I'll suspend all other plans." Dan said, shaking off the shock. Venera was going to the palace, she was going to be so close to the person who scares her the most in this world, the King. She was still rationalizing everything when Dan instructed Luca to get to the lab asap and take everything from Venera's station and all her belongings from there. "I need a moment to get over this and think straight." she finally spoke.
When the car approached the palace, Venera put everything in her backpack and brushed hands through her hair to smooth it, the fading blue locks tucked behind her ears, which were still burning red. On the 40-minute ride, she was able to small talk and win some respect from the guards. The palace was made from a sparkly white rock on the outside and it glistened in the sun. The weather was getting chillier in the later afternoon Venera wished she'd thought to bring a jacket. Her clothes weren't appropriate for the weather. She had taken only 2 changes of clothes and her old Kevlar body suit in case things got heated at the palace, which seemed enough when she was packing but too little now that she was faced with the reality of the palace. The guards calmed her down by telling her there are dresses sewn for each of the girls the prince had ch
As Felix and Venera were making their way back to the castle, a group of guards opened the front doors and let them in. The prince led Venera up 2 flights of stairs and into a long corridor of doors to the left. The marble flooring made all of their steps echo through the palace. He opened the first door on the right wall and invited Venera in. The room was small but cozy. A long stained wood desk took one wall with a mirror over it. A huge bookshelf next to the window opposite the door and the largest bed Venera had ever seen smack dab in the middle of the room. The bed was dressed in dark green coverture with huge beige pillows. On the left wall, there was a door that led to the bathroom. "So, how do you like it?" inquired the prince. Thank you, it’s wonderful," Va
Venera had been listening to music for some time, when the tall black-haired guard from earlier knocked on her door with her dinner. She tried to invite him in and keep her company, but he refused so Venera left the door open and talked to the guard stationed at her door. She learned his name. "So, Manny, why are you at my door? Isn't the palace safe? Why am I being guarded?" Venera asked. "I have no idea as well, lady, but those were my orders, so I am here." he tossed casually. "What do you do at the castle usually?" she followed up. "Normally I guard the front entrance and the garden exit on the east, but I will be stationed with you for the duration of your stay here, lady." he sighed. I bet it is a bore to sit outside the door and count flies, thought Venera. "Why are you so exhausted? You look like you have been workin
After what felt like just a few moments of sleep, Venera was awoken by a hand covering her mouth. Instincts kicked in right away and she kicked as hard as she could, prepared to scream when she heard metal hit the carpeted floor. Venera blinked and saw a crown roll on the carpet next to her. She immediately jumped off the bed and found she had kicked the prince square in the stomach. He was trying to regain balance and breath when she turned the lights on. "What the fuck Felix!" she whisper-screamed. He tried to speak but nothing came out of his mouth, he just sat on the bed and stared at the floor. His eyes were swamp green, strained, and filled with pain. His hair was a mess. He wore the same suit from earlier that day but it was wrinkled all over. Venera was still trying to make sense of everything when she saw a drop of blood drip on her sheets from under the prince's suit jacket.
The prince fell asleep at some point, face planted on her bed. Venera tried to fall asleep on the other side of the bed but kept getting awoken by his grunts every so often. She didn't want to take sleeping pills so late into the night or her morning would be miserable. The clock read 4 a.m. so Venera was wondering if she could just stay awake and survive the next day. Ultimately she decided against it. Just before she tried to go back to bed for the umpteenth time, she cracked the door open to see Manny was still out like a candle, just like he was, when the prince had come to her room. She snuck back into bed, lifted the blanket to check on the prince's healing, which looked good for now. She didn't have the energy nor the tools to find out if the whip used on him was soaked in something to stop the wounds from clotting. She lied down and got comfortable, faced the outside of the bed, and tried to ignore the prince was just an arm's reach
After breakfast the prince had to get ready to meet the other girls. Venera started opening the drawers in her room and found a box of makeup in one of the drawers. She hauled the box into the bathroom and started looking at what she had to work with. She had never purchased makeup for herself, as she could never justify the cost, but she had gotten plenty as presents over the years, that she wasn't completely clueless. She settled for ochre eyeshadow in her creace and some mascara for the eyes, some blush on her cheeks and the bridge of the nose, and a lip oil to finish it all. She then confidently opened the door and asked Manny for his opinion. "I've got no idea about makeup, Lady, but you look good," he replied, which was followed by an eye roll from Venera. She begged him to take her out to the garden, but he wasn't sure about it. "I know why
After their exchange after lunch, Felix had to leave once again, this time to a meeting with the king's advisors. He promised Venera to be back before dinner so they could have more time to talk. Venera had a lot of thinking to do, as it was going to be soon time to tell the prince the real reason she was here. Was she ready to tell him? Was she prepared to lose his trust? Will finding out she was a rebel change his opinion of her? Would this jeopardize the 10's mission? Did she trust him enough still? Venera decided that thinking in the bath would help her, so she filled one for herself and added a lot of the lavender bath salt she found in the drawer. There was never a time in her life when she could have afforded the luxury of having a bath and she was determined to make the best of it while she was at the palace. He said you are his only choice, she thought. But can I count on him not changing his mind?
Venera woke up from her pill induced sleep early the next morning. Her first instinct was to send for the prince, but a whisper of fear made her think twice.Logically, Venera knew that Felix made the right decision, both for the 10's mission and their relationship, if one could even call it that. But she couldn't get the sound of his whip hitting her skin out of her head. Would she have done the same in his shoes. She hadn't considered it that way until that moment. Her hand flew to the lowest slash on her back. It was mostly healed, unlike the other two, but it was the one that broke her down completely. Could she forgive the prince completely? When Venera finally gathered up the courage to leave her bed, she sent Manny for the prince and some breakfast, because she was starving."Lady Venera, are you feeling better?" Manny looked at her with concern."I've been better, but I'm
*Trigger warning - whipping, blood, wounds.*Venera couldn't just stay closed in her room all day, so she begged Manny to take her out to the gardens."It is inhumane to make me stay in my room Manny. I have no phone service, no TV, literally nothing to do. Can't you take me to the gardens? Isn't there a library I can borrow a book from in this castle?" she ranted to Manny through the open door.He just shrugged and sighed. "I wish I could, lady, but my orders are to keep you here and take you out for meals only," he reiterated. "But I could have something that may interest you."Just as he was about to continue his explanation, his gaze froze on something in the direction of the staircase.Venera heard multiple footsteps and sprung from her chair, lunged for her backpack, and threw it under the bed. Next she broke the glass that contained the glucofine shot she had studied earli
Maybe an hour later the boys knocked on Venera's door. She let them in and Micha went straight for the bed, while the prince took a seat on the chair. "Can you help me dye my hair while we talk?" asked Venera, before Micha had a chance to start. "Can't you do it yourself?" he retorted, already getting up to take out the dye from the bag he brought. "If you don't want me to look like a tween's failed experiment on National tv, you will get your hands a little dirty, Micha." she laughed at her own joke, the boys following with their own laughs. The prince asked if there was anything he could help with, but Venera declined immediately, throwing him her phone and putting him on music duty instead. She prepared the dye and got a towel from the bathroom, handed Micha the gloves and brush and shooed Felix off the chair, and directed him to the bed. She took a seat, put t
"Why are you here in the first place Venera?" Micha inquired, taking a seat on the linenless bed. "So, it is a long story Micha, but I want you to listen to all of it before you speak," she said and continued recounting the events of the past two days. "So you have slept in the same bed, but you haven't slept together? Then how do you explain that the laundry lady and the blood on the sheets?" he asked. "Well... I bled all over the prince, the bed, and myself, I mean. I guess it is better that they think we slept together than the truth." she concluded, defeatedly. Without skipping a beat, Micha turned around to the prince, "And you, what do you have to say, Felix? Why are you playing with her heart if you have already made up your mind and taken her to bed? I thought about you as more of a gentleman." "Believe me, I never imagined this either. I never thought I would f
Venera froze at the prince's offer. "Felix, last night was an exception. We aren't doing this every night!" she shook her head. He took her hand and followed up, "Why not Venera? What's stopping us?" She couldn't come up with an answer, so the prince encouraged her to get herself a change of clothes and spend the night in his room. She reluctantly agreed, desperately wanting it, but also being scared of overstepping the social norms of the palace. "If it gets out or becomes a problem, you can just say, you can't say no to me," he winked. "And remember, none of the others would have blinked twice at this request." "I'm not the others, Felix…" she hissed at him. "Exactly!" he laughed. While Venera was picking her dress and shoes for tomorrow, the prince went ahead and warned the guard outside to pretend Venera was in her room
