I watched my mom in disgust while she sewed a silky blue dress for me. I was supposed to wear it to a party we were going to in a few weeks. Dresses were not me and there was nobody to impress.
“Come on Riley, your sixteen! Try to be a lady for once,” Mom said with her gentle voice. I guessed that she saw my sour look when I walked into the sitting room. She looked into my eyes and sighed as she kept to her sewing.
“Please, cooperate once in your life,” she got up and walked towards me with the dress in hand.
Mom always wanted me to be a little lady, but I had a lot of Dad in me. I hung out with the boys too much and not in the flirtatious way. I sighed and marched towards my room. She skipped along behind me with the dress dragging along the floor. Dad passed us in the hallway laughing at me.
“Got ya’ again, Riley?” He seemed tickled at the idea of me being in a dress.
“Yea”, I sighed.
“Oh, quit your griping, you’ll be beautiful!” mom said as she dragged me into the room. When she closed the door, I heard dad booming with laughter as he went outside.
I looked out the window blankly as she put the dress on me and fixed a few buttons by the waist. When she finished, she looked at me and smiled. She put her hand on my cheek.
“See, it doesn’t look so bad! It brings out those icy blue eyes of yours!”
I guess she was right. It really didn’t look so bad. The dress matched my pale skin and my wavy brown hair, but I would never admit it to her. Mom was happy, so I could not complain.
“Ehh”, I said. It was just too funny to watch my gentle mother aggravated. I do it just to spite her sometimes. She stomped her little foot down and her expression changed to frustration and aggravation. It was adorable! Her little nose wrinkled up and her big brown eyes narrowed into slits. I honestly couldn’t take her seriously and it was really hard to imagine her being an authoritative mother. I smiled holding back laughs.
“Ugh! You are impossible! Gerald, Robin, come see Riley in her new dress,” she said as a smirk sneaked up her face.
My smile soon faded after that. I hated it when she lured my little brother Robin into things. He never lets things go and it gets on my nerves. It must be amusing to a ten-year-old to annoy his big sister. When dad and Robin came in the room, dad took his hat off. He had a bald spot in the middle of his head. He looked tremendously tender when he saw me. Seeing his almost seventeen-year-old daughter being a lady must have gotten to him. Robin just looked surprised and was trying to hold back laughter.
“Gosh, is this my baby girl? You look absolutely stunning honey! I think we better keep her away from the boys Sarah,” he said, and I groaned. Dad got closer to me to grab my arm.
“Looks the same to me!” Robin was leaning against the doorframe. He was wearing his overalls that were covered in dirt now. He and dad must have been doing some yard work while I was being tortured inside. He knew how much I hated dresses and obviously my face gave it away when dad got closer. Even though he got on my nerves, we knew how to make each other laugh. I held back giggles while mom shooed him away. He smirked and walked off.
I let them look at me in awe for a while and gave my mom the pleasure of going out in town with her. I couldn’t help but see all the second glances I got. Mom seemed amused by it because she kept pointing out boys that looked at me. One accidently hit his nose on a post his going into a store. I knew him. His name was Adam. I laughed to myself. He was a kid in my class, but he was a jerk to me. I couldn’t stand the boy, but I couldn’t deny how nice it felt to be noticed. I always was the tomboy, so I was used to being treated like one of the boys. We walked into Mr. George’s grocery store and he smiled at mom and me.
“Well, doesn’t someone look nice!” he smiled at me and mom nudged me to say thank you. I sighed, but I said thank you nicely and smiled back. Mr. George was a family friend and was always nice to Robin and me. He even got us presents for our birthdays.
“Another success Sarah! You really should think about opening a business with those dresses of those,” he opened the cash register and put some money in from the customer that just paid for his groceries, “I could help you get started if you like.”
Mom smiled brightly. Everyone loved her dresses and always asked her if they could buy one from her. She said that they were only for me and they were special. She was trying so hard for me to actually enjoy the dresses, but I never did. I only wore them to make her happy.
“Oh, George you know I won’t do that no matter how many people ask! Thank you for the offer though.” She picked up a basket and got all our groceries. I followed along, avoiding the people staring at me. It was nice to be noticed, but it got a little uncomfortable when everyone stared at you at once.
“Look Riley! Isn’t this a beautiful ring? I just might get this for your birthday.” She was pointing at a silver ring with a pink rose as a gem. I wanted to groan, but I didn’t. I told her it would be nice and grabbed the bread for her. She smiled and kept on getting the groceries. Since I said that, it meant that I would have to wear it. If it wasn’t a new dress, I was good.
“Is that all? Okay, you have a discount so that will be ten dollars.” He opened the cash register and handed mom a receipt and put the money that mom gave him in the register.
“Thank you, George. We really appreciate it. Money is so tight these days.”
Mr. George smiled and gestured his hand showing her it’s not a problem. “No, thank you! Gerald has saved my store dozens of times from going under. Give him my thanks for that once again. Have a nice evening, Sarah.” He gave mom the grocery bag and waved good-bye as we walked out of the store.
It was nearly dark when we finally finished shopping. We started walking home when the sun was setting.
“I don’t see why you wouldn’t always dress this way. You saw all those boys staring!” My mom was way too amused by all the boys in town, but she was happy, so I didn’t complain.
“To be honest mom, if they will not notice me without wearing this blue dress, then they don’t really deserve me. I want someone who can notice me in every way. Not just beauty.”
She sighed at my poor judgment and dropped the subject. I thought I had a point there.
She talked about all the stuff we bought as the stars started to show in the almost dark sky. We got home just in time because the sky was completely black as we went up the steps to our log cabin.
Our little log cabin was comfortable for all four of us. Our land was big enough for Robin and me to run around on a nice day. My father is a farmer. We get our eggs and milk at home, but dad sells some of it to Mr. George in town. That’s how dad saved him from having problems before. Dad and Mr. George have been friends for as long as I can remember, so they help each other out every now and then. Our barn is full of cows, but no horses. We do have a donkey though. His name is Jake. Dad usually uses him for the garden, but other than that, he’s a pet to Robin and me. We play with him for hours at a time taking turns riding him around the barn. Poor Jake was tired out before dad could even use him. Dad never got angry though. He usually did everything by hand anyway. He’s a strong man. Next to the barn we have a big pin where we raise the pigs. Dad won’t let us around there anymore. Last time we were at the pin, we got so dirty that our mom couldn’t even recognize us. We were covered in mud from head to toe. She was furious that day.
I could smell breakfast inside the house. That’s what dad always cooked when mom was out all day. He thought it lifted a burden from her. The smell of the bacon and eggs got stronger when mom opened the door. I went straight upstairs to take off the blue silky dress so I could be me again. I put on my old red shirt that mom really didn’t like and my worn-out jeans. I stared at the dress and stuffed it into a black bag along with other things I didn’t need. The bag was full of things.
Sitting at the table with mom talking about the boys and the shopping was not so bad. I ignored it and watched Robin give me silly looks across the table. There was one face that he gave me that made me laugh so hard, that milk shot out my nose. Mom looked at Robin and me and told us to hush. We smiled and held back giggles.
The conversation ended with dad talking about some weird dream he had the other night.
“I don’t know why, but I saw this cloaked man outside watching the house burn in amusement, but in aggravation. It was like he was looking for something,” he shuddered and stood up to put his plate away. He grabbed the sink and kept shaking. Mom went over to him and comforted him. He often had dreams like that, so it really wasn’t new to me. I didn’t understand why dad was taking it so hard.
“It was just a dream dad, there’s nothing wrong with that right? Why does it bother you?” I stood up and walked next to mom to look at him. Robin was standing next to me.
“He said your name, Riley.” I looked at him, surprised to see tears in his eyes. I was shocked to hear this from his dream. Dad really found every way to protect us. I didn’t see why it would get to him now. Mom looked at me and then looked back at dad.
“It’s okay Gerald, it’s just fear that gives you nightmares. That’s all,” she put her hand on his shoulder. Dad smiled and agreed with her, but for a split second I could have sworn I saw my mom’s face pucker with worry and sadness.
It was bedtime, and as usual, mom tucked me in. That was our tradition. Dad hugged me hard and kissed me on the forehead as mom tucked me in tightly.
“Good night dear, see you in the morning.” I hugged them both and said good night. They left and closed the door. About fifteen minutes later, Robin came in and helped me uncover. Mom always tucked me in a little too tightly.
“So, how does it feel to be a ‘young lady’?” he said as he pulled the covers out. We both laughed at the word quietly.
“HAHA really funny!” I looked at him and a I came to a sudden realization. I sat up and looked out the window.
“What?” he said as he got under the covers with me and looked at me with curiosity.
I turned to him and looked up at the ceiling playing the thought through my head for a moment before I spoke. “I want to go out in the world and travel. This ‘lady like’ stuff is not for me and adventure is a lot more interesting than dresses.”
He laughed and said, “Take me with you.”
I’ve always thought about it. Maybe someday I’ll get the chance to travel the lands beyond Grysmont if mom and dad let me, but most likely Mom would never allow that. They have both been so protective of me my whole life. I doubt they would ever consider letting me get too far.
“Alright, go to bed before I tell Mom you’re up!” He chuckled at the thought of me actually telling on him and got up. Mom would absolutely go berserk if she knew.
“Good night Riley.”
“Good night Robin.” We hugged and then he left. I laid in the dark until my eyelids won the fight against staying up. I fell asleep with thoughts of adventure, sighing into unconscious.

Chapter 2: The meetingI woke up in the early morning to the smell of smoke in the air. This couldn’t have been good at all. My mom never burned food. I went to my door to open it, but an armored man kicked it in before I could. He was standing there looking at me. He looked really strong and his face was covered with sweat. He seemed really angry and looked like a soldier, but he was strangely formed at the face. He finally walked towards me laughing. I started to panic and backed up slowly. My black bag was behind me, so I tripped. He reached out to grab me, but a sword came through his chest. As he fell, I saw my dad behind him. “Riley, run!” he looked at me in alarm. He was breathing deeply and was sweating fiercely with soot on his hard face. He was still in his nightclothes. I was astonished, but I grabbed the bag and ran past my dad pulling out his sword from the soldier
I was out before I could hear anything else.Chapter 3: EverythingI woke up with tear-stained eyes. It hurt to move my face because of the dry tears. Still, I had this calmness to me and felt warmth against my stomach. A cat was lying on my stomach just purring away. Where was I? I sat up and the cat leaped down. It ran into the other room where Gabe and Jack were. I also heard a woman’s voice I couldn’t recognize. When I stretched and pulled myself out of bed, I then went into the other room. Gabe was twirling his fingers into his silky, black hair, smiling away with the cat on his shoulders. The cat was mostly black, but it had some silver across one of its eyes. Jack finally realized my presence and bowed his head slowly towards me. “Good morning sleepy head!” Gabe looked at me and smiled. I rubbed my forehead where the bump was.
I had forgotten how hard it was to ride a horse. It was a whole lot different from riding Jake back at home. My legs ached as we rode along, and I was hoping we would stop soon so I could stretch my legs. As the sun began to fade, we were in the woods. Obviously, we were out of the little town of Grysmont. When we all stopped at a random clearing, Marie jumped down to look around.“We’re in Recap Forest. It should be safe here,” Marie said as we all sighed in relief. Gabe and Jack dismounted, but I couldn’t. My legs were so sore I couldn’t even move. I blushed red in embarrassment.“Need some help?” Gabe looked at me smiling.“That would be a little nice.” I called down to him. He faced the horse and pointed his finger down. The horse sat and I fell to the ground. I laughed, but my legs ached even more as I sat up. “You&
Winter wind blanketed over me as I walked closer to the house that I once lived in. Blood trickled down my cheek from my head, but that wasn’t stopping me from getting closer to the nothingness of the house. The sound of Robin screaming in the house was drawing me closer. I wanted to help. I wanted to protect him, but there was nothing I could do. When I walked into the center of the house, I could see him cradled into a ball in a corner. A cloaked man was standing over him as he cried in his own arms. Ignoring my wound, I got closer and held Robin in my arms. “You shouldn’t have come Riley. That’s what he wanted. I’M THE BAIT!” He scrambled out of my arms and tried to run, but the cloaked man grabbed him and slammed him onto the floor. Robin screamed in agony. I flinched and stood up to face the cloaked man. I couldn’t see his face, but I could hear his cold voice.“Riley, I kne
I decided to shake the night off. It wasn’t too hard to forget about because I found it so amazing to watch Landon run with ease next to us and Andrew right behind him in wolf form. He seemed to be ready to pounce on him at any moment. Marie rode with me again and I again felt an overwhelming sense of calm with her presence. Honestly, it really did help me stop thinking about the pain the dream caused and the pain of my family. My head was still pounding with pain, and it was hard to keep focused anyway. Every time I looked up I felt dizzy and wanted to fall over, so I kept my head down, but occasionally looked at Landon or Andrew. Jack guided us out of the forest and into clear plains filled with grass and flowers. It took my breath away. The wind made the grass sway back and forth. It was like a lullaby for my eyes. I couldn’t help but look up to enjoy the beautiful scene.“Landon!” I heard Jack shout and then I
Gabe almost dived off his horse before Jack pulled him back. “Wait Gabe. We’ve got to make sure Landon’s in control.” Landon didn’t acknowledge the remark. He still paced back and forth shaking his head every now and then. “He’s ok.” Andrew said. Andrew had just changed back to human and was walking towards me. Gabe jumped off his horse and raced to me. He got to me before Andrew could. I was sitting on the ground, so he sat on my lap and wrapped his arms around my neck to hug me. That felt great. It almost felt like Robin in my arms again with smiles on our faces and the family still together. That was too much, so I concentrated on Gabe. He seemed worried. “Oh, I’m so glad you’re ok! What happened?” Gabe looked up at me. I felt so content with Gabe in my arms that I forgot my frustration with Landon. There was so much to say and a lot to explain, but I wasn’t the one that was going to. Landon was the one that knew what just happened. I gently moved Gabe out of my arms and
Robin's POV“What you mean you let them go?! Lucas, I thought I told you specifically that I wanted Landon and Riley in your grasp as soon as you saw them!” Frustrated, Logan picked up Lucas from the collar of his shirt. “Sir, I have Landon right at my grasp. I can feel it!” I looked at the strange looking man that was standing close to Logan. He saw Riley! He put him down and looked at him. “This has nothing to do with your group Lucas. This has to do with Riley remember? I must get it before she turns seventeen! Do you want to end up like the soldiers that I brought along to get the girl?”I gulped and stood up. “You won’t kill her will you?”They both turned to look at me. Lucas chuckled sickly, but Logan stopped him.
Riley's POVChapter 9: The Decision“Landon! No, get away!” I flinched when I woke up to see Landon staring at me. He had his hand on my cheek, but I pushed it away. “What? What happened?” He backed away and for the first time, he looked terrified. I scrambled to my feet and looked around. It had been days since I had my last dream, however, this one was horrid. We were still in the forest where I saw Lucas and his group. Jack decided to travel in the woods to be safe since Lucas worked for Logan. The morning was harsh with fog and cold air. I knew it was just a dream, but it felt so real.“Why did you do that? I told you to stop! And you charged at me anyway!” I slammed my fists into his chest. It felt like stone, but I didn’t care. He looked shocked so he let me hit him un
*Landon's POV* "Lucas, you can have me please just leave Riley alone!" I pleaded as the urge to kill her worsened in my being. Lucas chuckled loudly over the wind, showing the pleasure he is feeling from my pain. "Do you not realize that this was my plan all along? As soon as I sensed the love you had for this girl I knew this was my way back into your being. So when master Logan made the command to have this girl killed at the precise moment of her change, I knew this would be a perfect plan. He needs someone to kill her right when her power shows itself so he can take it for himself! I was going to do it for him, but this is so much better. Master Logan gets his power, and I get you back. It's perfect!" Lucas bellowed triumphantly at his plan and I could feel his grip growing tighter on me.The dark dread that flowed within me deepend, realizing that there was no way out now. Lucas was going to win. I really am about to kill Riley, the only girl that I have truly
***Landon's POV*** Hayden was fast, but not fast enough to escape from the intense rage that flowed through my body. I easily caught up to him, grabbed his neck, and tackled him to the ground. I was ready to rip him to shreads for what he did to Riley, but I heard a loud raspy laugh vibrate against my hand. "I knew the extra things I did to her would make you blindly chase me. Did I do well Lucas?" I suddenly grew stiff and a burning hot sensation magnified through my body, causing me to let Hayden go. Damnit, I put my guard down. Lucas now has complete control of me. "Yes, my boy you did very well. You will be rewarded!", Lucas's voice boomed over the falling rain, emerging from a brush of trees. I watched Hayden smile at me and he got up and jogged next to Lucas. The rest of the group slowly emerged and stood behind him, all snickering exept for Cody, who was close to tears. "Landon! Had you forgotten when you get vulnerable around me I can eas
Chapter 17: Collision I fought against the burning of my lungs from running for so long and pushed myself to run even further. I had to run fast and far enough to be out of Andrew’s view of my thoughts, but my fighting ended up failing and I collapsed in a little clearing that seemed to be far away from where we were. I sobbed while catching my breath and held myself tight against my chest. The pain of loss was overwhelming and what made it worse was that I was on my own now. No parents. No Jack. No Gabe. No Marie. No Andrew. No Landon. And no Robin. I was completely alone in a world that I did not understand. Suddenly, everything around me was broken and I had no way of fixing it. Because I was the reason for it all. And the crazy thing was…I still didn’t even know why. Thunder roared across the sky, and I looked up. The stars were gone, and dark clouds flooded around me. Little drops of rain fell on my face and I closed my eyes. As the rain steadily came down h

Riley's POV“I swear! I can smell him Jack! Please let me investigate!” Andrew pleaded almost sounding like he was whining like a dog. I peeked through the tent door and saw Andrew shaking furiously. I would have gone out there, but I was still not allowed to leave the tent. Jack had his arms folded in argument and was shaking his head. Andrew was angry and eager. I could see it in his body language. I could see Landon in the corner of my eye and saw no expression on his face. He was completely blank which really bothered me.“Absolutely out of the question, it could be a trap since you can’t hear his thoughts!” Jack practically screamed at him, and Andrew looked like he was about to change. Then, I heard a light whimper coming from behind my tent and light growling. I immediately stormed out of the tent and that caught both Jack and Andrew’s attention. They called my name, but I paid no attention. I looked b
Robin's POV"Please let me go! They will worry about me!” They all laughed at him and shoved him next to me. He was crying and holding his hand that was wrapped in a white cloth. He tried to get up, but I pulled him down again.“Trust me, you don’t want to run. They will hurt you in a way you didn’t know possible,” I let him go and he cried even harder. He looked at me and his eyes widened.“A-are you R-Robin?” he sniffled out and calmed a little. I looked at him confused.“Yes, but how do you know that? Were you with Riley? Is she ok?” I spoke fast. I was excited to talk to someone who saw her. He smiled slightly and wiped the tears from his eyes.“Yes, I was with Riley and I’m not sure if she’s ok. She was screaming before I got kidnapped. Landon went to go get her because Jack was not around. I hope she’s okay,
I ran after him, but I wasn’t fast enough to catch him. Fortunately, Landon could run faster than all of us and caught him with one hand. Jack stopped struggling and went almost limp. I couldn’t help the sympathy that overwhelmed me, but my anger still boiled inside me. I had enough of secrets. I just found out that my own mom had to keep secrets from me. I walked towards Jack and stared at him. He wasn’t crying, but his eyes were glassy. He looked at me with a look that I didn’t recognize. It wasn’t hatred or sadness. My expression faded into a puzzled look. I looked down to the ground.“You have a lot of explaining to do if you want to figure all this out with me by your side. I will now stay with all these secrets,” I looked up and saw that Landon let him go and Jack was standing close to me shaking. He nodded and his expression changed into the normal expression Jack always had, but a small smile was placed with it.&
Hayden sat next to me smiling. I smiled back. This had to be a dream. I saw him dead in his own home. He leaned in to kiss me, but he stopped. His face turned white, and he pointed at something behind me. I turned and saw the cloaked man standing a few feet from me. I grabbed Hayden’s hand, but he didn’t grab back. I turned and saw him still. I touched his face and realized it had turned into polished stone. I quickly turned back at the cloaked man.“You turn Hayden back right now!” I said, but he just laughed.“You have t-,” he stopped talking and turned around. There was nothing there, but he seemed startled. Suddenly, the room changed into a gentle meadow. I could see Robin on the other side.“Oh, Robin! You’re okay!” I ran to him, but he stopped me. “No time! Riley, you can’t believe an
Chapter 12: The ControlLogan had Lucas by his collar in the air enraged again. “You imbecile! You almost lost my chances to have the power that she possesses. All I asked for is for you to do is make my plan follow through, not kill her! I swear to you if she dies, you will too, mark my words!” He threw him to the ground and stared at him. Lucas looked terrified, but patient. “Master don’t worry your plan will work! The boy that I have will be bait to lure her in without force. Just like you predicted. I just…lost control for a second. She will survive the wolf stopped me in time.” He pointed at the body that was lying on the ground. This wasn’t the boy that I saw in the vision. I looked at Logan and his expression changed. I knew this expression well. It was the look he gives me before he passes a nigh
