Chapter 1

I must not be the type of soul that people want to save. There has to be something wrong with me. My parents turned their backs on me when I was still a pup. Walking away from being parents. That’s not normal for wolves. Most wolves crave being in a pack. Having pups is part of the DNA of a wolf. Yet my parts just walked away like it never mattered that I existed. 

Then falling for my ex-husband even when he wasn’t my mate and allowing him to break me physically and emotionally, mentally. I must attract the bad, there’s no other reason I can think of that he would come back here today and rush me when I left for work. Ranting and raving about how lucky I am that he wasn’t killing me for getting him locked up before. I hadn’t heard he had made bail.

 He threw me into the house and grabbed my arm, breaking it with how strong he was. My wolf hiding , not wanting to come forward and protect me from this monster. She was weak, submissive, she was too afraid to come out and protect herself.

I managed to kick him away from me and rushed to the bedroom, locking the door behind me. Crying against the wall as I could hear him hitting and screaming through the door. Tears rolled down my face and I pulled my phone out of my pocket with my good arm.

I called the one person I could trust in this situation. My boss Aria, who ran the local Women's shelter.

“Hey Katie, I’m about to walk in what’s up?” her happy voice coming through the tiny speaker.

“Aria,” I whispered into the phone. “I won’t be in today, The pizza place down the road caught fire and Jacob has to go.” That was our secret code. Someone is in the room or nearby and I need help.

I could tell she had muted me and I prayed to the Goddess as he started hammering on my door telling me what he planned to do to me once he got back into my room. 

“I’m going to throw your body against the wall and fuck you while your unconcsious. I’m going to bite you and claim you and you will never get away from me again!” he screamed through the door as he threw his shoulder against the door. I tried not to scream as I rushed from next to the door to the bathroom and locked that door too. I knew if he made it in that he would do exactly what he said he would do.

I could hear Aria talking to the 911 dispatcher. “This is Aria Benson from B and B Women's Shelter. I have a woman on the line who used the emergency code phrase, indicating she is in danger. She is at home. Her address is two three two Jackson square.”

“What is the code normally used for ma'am?” the operator asks.

“Domestic abuse.”she says as I take deep breaths trying to force myself to stay calm. 

 “I conferenced you in, I am going to unmute her line and keep her talking as much as possible until I hear the police arrive.

“We have officers on route now.”

“Katie, I’ll send some food your way for the day, no worries. I am just glad that you could call and let me know what was going on.” I say.

“I’m just glad I have such an understanding boss.” I say, I can hear the hint of fear in my voice but there’s no hiding it. I was scared. Last time he was near he almost killed me and I honestly believed if he made it to me, he wouldn’t stop at raping me. He would kill me.

“Always, Did you manage to drop the metal disc off?” she asks me, giving the code for is he carrying a gun?

“No, I forgot, it’s with me.” I said softly.

She mutes my line again, “He has a gun and is nearby as she is on the phone with me.” I translate for the dispatch operator.

“Thanks, Updating our officers now.”

 “That’s okay Katie, you can swing them by later.” I hear a knock from the living room door..

Trying to not scream when I hear the front door slam against the wall as officers scream for Jacob to get to the ground and I breathe a sigh of relief.

“Thank fuck for you, Aria.” I say trying to hide the tears in my voice.

“Jacob Conley?” she asks.

“Yeah, the ex. Apparently out on bail. Rushed me as I was heading out of work, raving on and on. They are wanting me to head to the hospital. Aria don’t freak out but my arm is broken. I’ve got some swelling as well.”

“No problem, Do you want to be put on paid medical leave? For a few weeks?”  she offered.

“Fuck no, It’s not my dominate hand.”

“Then we will see you tomorrow.”

“Thanks boss, for everything.” I say before hanging up and going to talk to the cops and get into the ambulance to go to the E.R. to see if the arm will need to be reset from being broken.

“Fuck my life.” I whisper to myself.

I don’t think I can handle much more, I wince as my wolf throws the image of Brenton into my mind. She kept insisting that Brenton belonged to her. But I couldn’t trust my gut anymore. The last time I listened to my heart, I ended up almost dying. My wolf had to be wrong. There was no way I had a mate, much less that fancy ass wolf who was related to Aria. There was no possible way.  

I take a deep breath and realize my big ass black mastiff, Rex is still at the vet's office being groomed. I pulled my phone back out and called them to let them know that Aria was going to come pick him up. She, Lori and Eli were the only people that he loved enough to go with if I wasn’t around. I then took a deep breath and called Aria again.

“Katie?”
