Kyara’s POV

The woodland was mysteriously still, broken only by the low hum of the pendant on my breast. Eric's stiff presence alongside me was like a barrier, but the weight of Victor's confession felt like a stone in my gut. My mother, the pendant's creator? The comments rang in my head, eroding the confidence I'd previously had.

"Kyara." Eric's voice was low and steady, but the edge of fury was palpable. "You shouldn't trust him. He is a manipulator who plays on your emotions."

I tightened my grasp on the pendant, its cold surface resting on my hand. "What if he isn't lying? What if he was telling the truth, Eric? My mother concealed so much from me. "This... it changes everything."

Eric drew closer, his hands framing my face with a softness contradicting his harsh tone. "It does not alter who you are. Whatever the pendant's roots or what your mother did, it does not define you."

I looked into his eyes and saw both a resolution and an unsaid cry. He didn't want me to pursue Victor

His fingers momentarily brushed against mine, sending sparks skittering up my arm, as if he could sense my inner struggle.I couldn't get rid of the vision of the rift—glowing, throbbing, alive—and the unsettling sensation that something far worse lay just beyond it. Yet, at this moment, all I could think of was the warmth of Eric's gaze, the way it softened as it met mine, even if he bristled with distrust at Victor."You shouldn't be here," Eric hissed as he stepped forward. His voice was like thunder, deep and powerful, each syllable loaded with barely contained rage. "You've done enough damage."Victor did not back down. His previously pompous exterior had shattered, leaving behind something unexpected: vulnerability. "This isn't about the past, Eric," he stat

My heart raced in my chest at an uneven pace, mirroring the whirling turmoil inside me. The gap had vanished, but its presence remained—an aching in the air, a phantom of the conflict that had just ended.Eric's arms were still around me, tight but soft. I was so near to him that I could feel his strong, regular heartbeat on my back. It was weirdly reassuring, anchoring me when the world seemed to shatter at any minute."You okay?" He asked softly, his breath brushing over my ear.I nodded, but the tears on my cheeks conveyed a different story. "She was there," I said softly, my voice shaking. "I've seen her. "My mom."Eric softly turned me to face him, his eyes seeking mine. His forehead pinched in anxiety, but there was something else there that caught my breath: an unsaid promise, an unwavering commitment. "We'll figure th

But I could not. This was my route. The leader of the Keepers moved another step closer, their motions unsettlingly smooth, as if they were gliding rather than walking. "Surrender to the shadow," they said, their voice gentle but firm, "or face the consequences of its unchecked power."I swallowed forcefully, the weight of their desire pressing on my chest like a tangible force. But before I could respond, the whisper returned, weak but forceful."Kyara… trust me."My mother's voice spoke to me from beyond the veil of reason. My heart stammered in my chest, split between terror and hope."Kyara, we don't have to do this," Eric whispered behind me, his voice low and frustrated. My voice broke, barely audible over the growls and smashes of the struggle going on around us.His lips curled into a frigid smile that did not reach his eyes. "Surprised to see me, Kyara?"I couldn't breathe or think. The darkness within me moved, throbbing with a weird combination of familiarity and warning.Eric's wolf form landed alongside me with a loud thud, his fangs bared and hackles up. He growled at the man in front of us, but my father did not flinch."Call him off," my father ordered, his voice sounding like silk wrapped around steel. "Kyara, what are you talking about?"The towering figure moved closer, and its shape began to morph. The once-monstrous shape vanished like ink in water, leaving just a lady in shadow. Her eyes sparkled softly, much like mine when the force within me stirred. But it was her face that made my heart stop. The strong cheekbones, the delicate curve of her lips, the way her black hair framed her face—it all felt too familiar."Kyara," she whispered softly but hauntingly. The shadow creatures circled, their warped bodies moving like ink on water, their eyes emitting an eerie light."Kyara," Eric whispered, his voice straining even in wolf shape. Heat rolled off it in waves, distorting the ground, and warping reality itself. My breath caught in my throat as its eyes—molten, swirling embers—locked onto mine."You survived the shadow," it said, its voice a low, vibrating growl that seemed to resonate within my chest. "But the shadow was merely the first test. I am the fire that will burn away your weakness. Let us see if you can endure."Victor quickly stood in front of me again, blade at the ready, his shoulders set as if he could shelter me from this beast. “Kyara, we don’t have to fight this alone. Let me —"“No,” I answered firmly, shutting him off. My voice astonished even me, clear and firm despite the pandemonium surrounding us. I stepped beside him, not behind. “This fight is mine. "How brave you are," it snarled, its voice like a thousand shards of glass grinding together. "But bravery does not save those who are already broken."The words sent shivers down my spine, but I didn't show my terror. "I've faced worse than you," I said, my voice firm despite the ache in my chest. The thing chuckled, a hollow, echoing sound that seemed to originate from somewhere and nowhere.

I knelt where he had disappeared, my hands hovering over the faint mark of his presence. The warmth of his dying light remained, but the questions it left behind were colder than any gloom I’d experienced.Victor crouched beside me, his touch hesitant but grounding as his fingers brushed my shoulder. “Kyara, we need to move. The ground here—”“It’s unstable,” I finished, my voice raw. I wasn’t sure if he meant the physical ground or the fragile balance of my emotions. Either way, he was right. The fractures beneath us were spreading, each crack glowing faintly with residual energy from the battle. Yet, I couldn’t bring myself to stand.Victor’s hand found mine, his grip firm but careful, like he was anchoring me to the present. “We’ll figure out what he meant, but not here. Every motion she took was purposeful and measured as if the universe bowed to her command. The air altered, thick with something ancient and unpleasant. She came to a halt only a few steps away from me, her head cocked and a ghostly smile on her lips."You look surprised," she continued, her voice a chilling reflection of mine. "But you shouldn't be."My breath caught, and the words seemed stuck in my throat. Victor and Darius were both motionless, their gazes shifting between me and... me."What...what are you?" I finally whispered. She gave a venomous chuckle. "Kyara, I am you. You refuse to accept yourself. The you who desires power, control, and escape from the chains you've enslaved yourself with.
