I rise from my seat and send him a death glare. The invisible string that held us together has finally snapped. I can feel it. My urge to talk to him has faded in recent weeks. But I need to address our unresolved issue to get this over with.

My building tears up as I sniffle. “I’ll just talk to him, Lora.”

My best friend shoots me a quick, contrite glance before jumping to her feet to confront Kristoff. “Where’s Candice?”

“She’s in Berlin,” he says.

Lora places a hand on her hips. “Did you know you were a traitor?”

“Please, it’s not like that.”

Ben suddenly appears behind Kristoff, hooking his arm around his shoulder. “Man, long time no see! How’s your dad? I’m sorry to hear about what happened to your dad. How is he doing now?” Ben asks, his eyes darting to mine. “Hello, Anya. How are you doing?”

I squint my eyes and cross my arms. “I’m sorry, Ben, but we want to talk privately.”

“Oh.” Ben’s face blanches. “I guess we’ll just have to catch up later. See you later, man.”

As I walk to Julian’s office, my best friend rushes toward me. “Melissa is here. I saw her asking for Kristoff around, so I called the professor to see how you were doing. Did she see you? Are you alright?”Unlike her tense demeanor, I’m fuming inside but try to remain calm.“Yes, and she completely humiliated me. But Julian arrived, so I’ll wait for him in his office.”Her shoulder loosens. “Thank God.”“Thank you, but I’ll talk to you later, okay?”“Sure.” She hugs me. “Follow your heart.”I press her against me. “I’ll see you at home.”She lets me go, and I go to Julian’s office. I’m curious about what he told Melissa or Kristoff, but I’ve never seen him so enraged as he was back there. It’s as if I only realized what he meant when he said he cared about me.But it doesn’t have to come to that. I only wanted to distance myself from Kristoff for the time being. He was my friend before he became my boyfriend. Even though he betrayed me, I still appreciate what he did for me. He suppo

  • The Professor Who Loves Me   26 - Hearts Can Doubt

While Julian makes our dinner, I cozily curl up on his couch in front of the fireplace. Since I was the guest, he insisted I stay put and leave the cooking to him. I can smell the flavor and aroma but have no idea what he’s preparing. People say, “A man who can cook is sexy, and a man who can cook well is even better.” He made me breakfast once, and I hadn’t had such a delicious breakfast in years. I also cook my meals, but I’ve been living alone for the past half-decade, so I’m curious if he’s the same way. “When did you move out of your parents’ house?” I ask, standing in the living room, watching him. “Ever since I’ve been able to make my own money,” he says, looking up at me. He’s ladling some sort of orange sauce onto a plate. “That was sixteen years ago.” I do a mental count. He’s now thirty-three, so he was seventeen at the time. Our ten-year age difference sometimes overwhelms me. However, many couples have a larger gap than that, so I don’t mind. I think it’s kind of sexy

We haven’t even started yet, and I’m already shivering with anticipation. I don’t even have to think about how badly I want to be in this situation. I’ve seen myself in this state hundreds of times. Just about anything Julian does is bound to make me swoon. He’s breathtaking to look at. It’s unfair that I’m overly aroused just looking at his beautiful body. My gentle lover lays me on the bed and stands at my feet, gazing lovingly at me. There’s no running back now. “You’re going to be the death of me. I’d imagined you like this, but I had no idea I’d actually spread you in my bed.” He felt the same way about me but since when? Was it when we kissed? Or was it when we first met? That’s impossible. My inner thighs itch with excitement. I desperately want to feel him back in my arms right now. “I can say the same thing.” His mouth twitches. “Good. Then I don’t have to hold back.” He creeps onto the bed and stoops over me. His knuckles caress my cheek. “I like your hair this way,”

  • The Professor Who Loves Me   28 - He Desired Me

I let out a high-pitched moan as I reach my climax. God, I’ve never had such a hard orgasm before. Julian gently bites my butt cheek. “That was sexy,” he rasps, his words becoming bolder and coarser than usual. He repositions himself on top of me. “I’m going to be inside of you, precious, as deep as I can get.” He runs his hand up the side of my leg. “Please. I’d like that.” My folds beg to be touched now. I’m too drenched with my own juice. I cry hard as he slides two fingers deep into my soaked opening again. “I’m just checking to see if you’re ready, and it seems you are. Tell me if this makes you feel uncomfortable, yes?” My head lands on the pillow. “It’s good. Please go ahead.” I imagined this in my head while touching myself, thinking it was his fingers, and now I’m here. It’s happening right now. He continues to thrust his fingers in and out of my opening as he kisses my lips. His thumb finds my clit. “Julian!” I exclaim. My hips move in sync with each thrust of his fin

I’m resting on Julian’s chest when the sun shines through the window. I bury my face against his side and inhale his pleasant male scent. His smell from last night still lingers on his body.Julian is truly mine now.“Good morning, beautiful.” He rolls to the side and faces me. “How are you feeling? Are you sore?”“A little. But I like it sore.” It’s as if his manhood is still impaled on me. We had sex until after three, and I apparently had countless orgasms. I loved every moment. He kisses my forehead as he embraces me. “Stay like this a little longer.”“I have school at nine. And you have one at ten.”“Then stay with me again tonight.”“I can’t. I need to write new music for the competition. That, as far as I remember, was your idea.”“Then do it here. I’ll help you.”“No way.” I sit up and move away from him. “I don’t think I’ll be able to work with you around like this. It will also be unfair to others. That feels like cheating.”Julian rests his arm on the back of his head. “It

“There are perceptions of legato that we can create using this slow reverberation and horizontal nature,” our conducting professor, Professor Ward Leighton, says as he sways his baton left and right. A dozen of us are holding violins in the studio performance room. “It is light in the sense of floating through time without any resistance or shift in speed,” the professor continues. “Play the second stanza.”My gaze automatically goes to the score. We’re performing the Salut d’Amour.I rest the violin on my left shoulder, my face angled against the chinrest, and my fingers gently resting on the fingerboard. I tune to the first string and float the horsehair over the A string with the bow. While our Professor swings his baton and left hand in delicate, careful waves, my fellow undergraduates and I play in unison, producing a soft, melodious, incessant sound. He cuts the play after four staff lines and continues with his lesson.“Perhaps we can go for a denser legato with tension on eac

I toss away another music sheet for the gazillionth time. I can’t think of anything! My mind is completely blank, and I can’t come up with a theme or catchy tune, either.I can’t even ask Lora for help because we’re both practically participants. We shouldn’t be looking at each other’s pieces like we used to do when we had homework. Not that she would mind, but she hasn’t come up with anything yet. She’s probably in her room right now, scratching her head over a pile of crumpled papers on the floor, too. This was the time I usually asked Kristoff. He didn’t care if we were contenders and always helped me. He was never interested in winning any of it. Even though it was late at night, I would usually call him.I’d call him whenever I was down. “I thought we were going to your place,” I remark casually. We’re now sitting in the same private dining room at Le Papillon. I eat another small bite of my chicken fricassee. “But the food here is delicious, so it doesn’t really matter.” “I figured you were hungry, and cooking takes time.” He eats some of his food and sips his red wine. “Besides, I’m sure you enjoy the truffles here. I found it rather amusing to see you indulge in that sweet. I’d like to see it again.” He looks at the remaining chocolate on the table. I nearly choked. “What?” He chuckles. “Never mind, precious. We’re still going to my place after this. I can’t let you go home just yet, or would you prefer I drive you home?” “No!” I utter. “Please, I’ll go with you. We never got a chance to talk abou

When I got to bed later that night, I immediately called Julian. Damn. My feet are killing me from running around all day in heels. “How’s Kristoff doing?” I ask, my gaze fixed on the ceiling. “He’s already dozed off.” I hear a door closing in the background. “Did you guys talk?” “Yeah.” “What did you say?” “Everything. I told him everything from the start. It’s alright now. You have nothing else to be worried about.” I exhaled a sharp sigh of relief. “We should’ve done this sooner. I’m sorry because Kristoff is a good person.” “He is. He didn’t tell you even though he already knew. “Hey, don’t worry about it, and get some rest,” he says softly. I chew my bottom lip. “Thank you for today. I was late, but you waited for me.” “No. Either way, I’d still tell you about it. I should be thanking you for accepting me.” Silence. I love hearing his voice. I could fall asleep all night listening to him speak. He makes me feel as if I’m lying on clouds. “I love you so much, Julian.”

  • The Professor Who Loves Me   70 - Happy Birthday, Julian!

I got separated from Julian at the party when everyone surrounded him to wish him a happy birthday. I also see his parents, Rachel and Benjamin, at the corner, speaking to some guests. I realize this is my second encounter with his father, and I don’t know much about him yet. Rafael, his eldest son, bears a striking resemblance to him. I’m curious about him because I’ve already met Julian’s entire family. The party is formal, well-prepared, and obviously exclusive, as evidenced by the familiar faces—most of whom are celebrities. I’m glad I dressed appropriately tonight. Everything Dean had arranged for me had probably come from Julian. Now I just have to get used to that fact and accept that he and John Pitch are the same person. And that I’m now engaged to him. This ring on my finger proves I’m not imagining things.

  • The Professor Who Loves Me   69 - Are you John Pitch?

When Dean arrives at the hospital, he sees me right away. His face is stricken with concern as he studies me from head to toe and then sighs when he realizes I’m fine. But whoa. I’m amazed at how he came here fast. I was just talking to him. “What are you doing here, Anya?” “It’s Kristoff. He’s had an accident. I can’t just leave him there, Dean, knowing I’m partly to blame.” “How is that your fault? Is he alright?” I nod. “He’s already awake, but he refuses to notify his parents.” Even though I know they’ll blame me, I’ll take whatever they say. “He probably thought it would just cause a stir. His parents are at the party. Don’t worry. I’ll check on him later, so we should leave now.” “What did Mr. Pitch say?” “He’ll come to see you. You can explain everything later.” I exhale a sigh of relief. “Thank you.” But Julian’s birthday, too! He could be looking for me right now. But I haven’t received a call or message from him yet, and neither has Lora. “He’s waiting, Anya, so hur

I feel my face whiten, unable to move my lips or even move at all. My mind is flooded with questions. How did he find out? Did Julian tell him? Or did he see us together? What does he think of me now?“Goddammit, Anya!” He rubs his face. Exasperated tears well up in his eyes. “Really? Julian? “Why him of all people?”“P-Please, Kris, calm down. I’ll explain.”I understand how important this is to him. I’ve known itsince the beginning. Kristoff looked up at Julian. He’s like a brother to him, someone he can rely on. But Julian and I went too far. It’s unfair that we kept it from Kristoff, but we didn’t do anything wrong. We were simply being cautious.I have to tell him. It should be done now, without hesitation. I’ll try to persuade him of my connection to Julian—everything from the beginning. We met before Whitlock, how I was chosen for the scholarship, how we met a

“How about this one?” I turn around in front of Lora while selecting a dress to wear to the signing at Sebastian Records in the afternoon today—my most awaited day. God, time flies! Oh, and tonight is Julian’s birthday party that will be held at the company.I’m wearing a Neiman Marcus royal blue asymmetric cross bandage dress and Christian Louboutin heels that were delivered to my door by my benefactor’s assistant, Jefferson ‘Dean’ Bryant. He thought I should dress nicely today, and he fully supports my newfound success. He also said he’d say something after I signed. I’m curious about what that’s all about.Lora squeals as she scans me from head to toe. “Damn, you’re hot. Hot, sexy-smart. I wish I could be there for you.”“

Anne’s laughter echoes throughout the living room after Hector finishes second in their game on my television I haven’t even used yet. Ben said it would be boring, so he brought his game console. The others are relaxing with some beverages and snacks while chatting. And I’m in the kitchen, getting another box of pizza and fried chicken. “Seriously?” Hector grumbles. “Wow, that was extreme! Now, give me your fifty dollars,” Anne brags. Ben chuckles. “I warned you, dude. You can’t force ladies these days.” “I’ll take the bet. I’m next,” Kristoff says. “Hey, me, too!” Brit yells. “Do they do this often?” I ask Lora. “Oh, yes. Usually in Hector or Ben’s place, but I hardly join.” I take a big bite of my pizza. God, I love cheese. “Then let’s join them now.” We bring the food into the living room and take a seat. “Hector, move your leg!” Give the owner some space,” Brit says as she grabs a

“So, what do you think?” Dean asks after we’ve toured an apartment on Royale Hill, two blocks from Whitlock. Since all the rents were the same, I chose the one closer to the school. “It smells expensive. It looks expensive.” It’s fully furnished and brand new. Despite the citrus air freshener, the interior still smells like leather and has glass windows. “Anya.” Dean crosses his arms, probably expecting me to say something serious. “Fine, I love it. It’s wonderful but still extravagant,” I admit bluntly. I suppose Mr. Pitch has nowhere else to put his money. What exactly is he thinking? The listing price alone scared me. Looking at it now completely overwhelms me. “You are welcome to move in whenever you want. I’ve already spoken with the lessor.”

Stella has a good public record, her records are selling out again this year, and fans are waiting for her new album. She made a fortune for Rafe when she gave up her stakes in her former management. Rafe will, of course, strive to keep her good image.”I close my eyes and let out a slow, deep breath to calm myself. “I’m sorry it happened to her. What are you going to do about her?”“Nothing. We were done a long time ago.” He drinks again.“But you’re still concerned about her,” I say bravely, but my voice wavering. Whatever his response, I must respect his feelings. It’s a miracle that I’m hungry after an entire day of not eating.I grab some bread from the counter, spread it with peanut butter, and pour myself a glass of orange juice.
