Chapter 1

Author: Pure Summer
It was 6:00 pm at Sunshine Coffee Shop.

Summer Charter sat by the window at a corner of the coffee shop as she watched the people walking outside. She was anxious.

Hank Lovell, her boyfriend, had told her over the phone that he would be there soon. However, she had already been waiting for half an hour, and he still wasn't there.

She sighed as she fidgeted with the leather wallet in her hands. The wallet belonged to Hank, and he had accidentally left it after they had lunch together earlier. Thus, she was waiting for him to come back to return it.

Her long, elegant fingers opened the simple-looking wallet. There was a picture displayed in the card slot.

The woman in the picture had sparkling eyes and a brilliant smile on her face while the man in the picture had her in his arms with a loving expression on his face.

Summer smiled. She had taken this picture with Hank when they'd graduated from university. Back then, they had also made a pact that they would get married once they graduated.

Their relationship was still going strong even though it had been four years since then. Moreover, they had finally set the date for their wedding. It would be in July.

She grinned at the picture again. Then, she turned the wallet in her hands slightly, revealing a pink slip of paper slotted into another card slot.

Summer took out the slip of paper to study it and her heart skipped a beat.

It was a certificate of authenticity for a three-carat pink diamond!

Summer felt a surge of emotion in her heart. She had once mentioned to her best friend, Simone Young, that she hoped that Hank would propose to her with a pink diamond ring.

This certificate was evidence that he had already bought it so … was he going to propose to her tonight?

Although the both of them had set a date for their wedding, he had always mentioned wanting to officially propose to her.

His confession had made her heart flutter. Ever since then, she had been waiting expectantly for him to propose.

Her finger slid across her screen as she contemplated calling him. Alas, before she could do so, she caught a glimpse of him outside the coffee shop.

Summer got to her feet excitedly. She raised a hand to wave but stopped in her tracks.

Right next to Hank, was none other than Simone, who was clad in a silk dress and clinging to Hank's arm lovingly.

Summer trained her gaze on the both of them as she pursed her lips in confusion.

Hank was oblivious to Summer's gaze and leaned closer to Simone to whisper sweet nothings in her ear with a grin.

When he finally looked up and locked eyes with Summer, he froze. His hand, which had been on Simone's waist, also slowly retracted to his side.

Simone also seemed to realize that there was something wrong and followed his gaze to lock eyes with Summer, who was still inside the coffee shop.

Ten minutes later, the three of them were seated in the coffee shop.

The waiter, who had brought their coffee to their table, could sense the tense atmosphere between the trio. He hastily placed the cups down before scrambling off.

"Should I thank the both of you for such a big surprise?" Summer asked sarcastically.

Summer had finally gotten over her shock at seeing her best friend with her boyfriend and was now in complete disbelief.

She coldly tossed Hank's wallet across the table and fixed her frosty glare on Simone's beautiful face.

Simone's delicate face was illuminated by the lights in the coffee shop. There was not even a shred of remorse on her face. She was completely calm.

Summer was bewildered. If this was a movie, Hank should be trying to explain himself to her right now.

If he explained himself, she would try her best to forgive him. If he told her that Simone was the one who had seduced him, she would still forgive him …

"Summie, it's exactly what you think it is. I have nothing to say," Hank said mildly with a calm expression.

Summer was stunned. She felt like she had been stabbed in the heart. A hint of sharp pain spread out.

"You have nothing to say? But I still don't understand how my boyfriend ended up with my best friend. Are the both of you just going to be shameless and not say anything until the end?" Summer screeched, unable to keep her emotions in check anymore.

She had no idea how they were still acting so calm even after she caught them red-handed.

There were only a few customers in the coffee shop but now all of them turned to watch Summer with pitiful gazes.

Simone, who remained silent at the side, finally opened her mouth, "Summie, you should know that there's no such thing as 'first come, first serve' when it comes to a romantic relationship …"

"Shut the fuck up!" Summer spat.

Simone showed an extremely aggrieved expression on her beautiful face at the moment. Once she leaned against the man beside her, her seductive eyes misted over.

At 1:00 am, the rain had finally stopped, and the sky was clear again. James Quisley, a tall, well-groomed man with short hair, stood silently in front of the massive floor-to-ceiling windows at Carlat International Airport. "It's rare to see you finally take a break. Have a safe trip, almighty president of Ascentia Group!" Lance Darwin, James' friend, exclaimed jokingly.James' dark eyes were calm as he responded, "Thanks."James was an exceedingly handsome man and yet he had an air of aloofness, making it hard for others to get too close to him. After joking around with James, Lance had gotten into his supercar. Still, before he sped off, he said again, "Mr. Quigley, I'll be here waiting for you to bring the future Mrs. Quigley home, alright?"James ignored Lance's incessant teasing and simply waved to send him off. Under the bright lights of the airport, James' sharp features paired with his all-black outfit made him look regal and refined. The future Mrs. Quigley? That w

Debbie's grin fell. "Breakup? My God! That bastard! So, not only did he steal the company's project bid and give it to a rival company, but he also broke up with you?" she screeched in disbelief. That was too much information in a single sentence. Summer's mind spun.Steal? Project bid? Did Hank …"You're saying that Hank did that?" Summer asked in shock."No way! Don't tell me you don't know about this!" Debbie said as she slammed a hand on the table. "There's no use acting coy now. Go ahead and take a look!" Debbie continued as she searched for the news on her computer. The Internet was buzzing with the news. Summer shoved Debbie lightly to the side to get a closer look. The headlines made Summer freeze."Family Company Facing Potential Bankruptcy!""Charter Corporation Faces a Hostile Takeover!""Charter Corporation in Hot Water!" "Risky Project Bid Gamble Lands Charter Corporation in Trouble!" Each headline was more outrageous than the last. Charter Corporation

To be honest, Summer knew the upper management staff very well. Besides Hank, who was still quite new, most of the upper management staff were employees from her father's generation. Almost all of them started from the grassroots and worked their way up step by step. When she had just started dating Hank, she had introduced him to Fred. Hence the two men had interacted with each other quite a number of times.Hank was two years older than her and not only was he gifted academically, but his work ethic was also compatible with Fred's. This made Fred take a liking to him.Despite that, if it weren't for Summer constantly putting in good words for him to Fred, Hank would never have managed to be part of the upper management of Charter Corporation. The headlines flashed in her mind, and she thought back to Fred's warm and kind expression this morning. She wasn't sure if it was due to regret or fear over how Fred would react to the news but her knees turned to jelly. She remained sl

At night, Summer had just taken a shower. With her hair still damp, she drew apart the curtains and slid the doors open to admire the view of Charter Estate. She recalled the emergency shareholder meeting she had attended just now as she held three percent of the Charter Corporation shares. Throughout the meeting, she clenched her pen tightly as she struggled to contain her emotions.Nearly half of the shares had been forcefully sold off. After the meeting had concluded, the finance report that was produced only served to support Fred's theories.Charter Corporation had been set up. Summer wondered if the horrors were only just beginning to start …When Summer came home, the thought of facing her mother made her nervous. Her mother, Amelia Lovelace, would've undoubtedly heard the news from Fred already. Amelia did not share Fred's optimism and resilience. She was unsurprisingly devastated by the news. However, she had managed to pull herself together enough to heed Fred's advice

Hank had been typing up his resignation letter and hadn't even raised his head to look at her as he spoke. He knew how stubborn Summer could be. So, he begrudgingly added, "Yes, we dated each other, but that's all in the past. The woman I love now is Simone, so please stop using our past relationship as an excuse to pester me."Summer stood next to his work table, her eyes laser-focused on his fingers which were flying across his keyboard. She had to fight the urge to bash the ashtray on his table right over his head. She never could've expected the man she had loved for so many years to be someone like this. She must've been blind to ever love him in the first place!"You're right. I'm nothing compared to the amazing woman that Simone is. Now that I've fallen from grace, it's easy for you to lose feelings for me, right?" she snapped sarcastically.Summer forced back the rising emotions in her and squeezed a light smile on her face. Then, she turned to leave. However, Hank's c

Under the same starry night sky, Hank drove his brand new, black Cayenne to Charter Estate. He parked it in a secluded area that was just about 15 feet away.He had just gotten off the phone with Simone's dad. For some reason, he drove here on instinct. This secluded area was where he would park his car after he sent Summer home from their dates. The parking space had a perfect view of the balcony on the second floor. It would always light up before Summer would stick half her body out to wave goodbye at him. However, those days were in the past. Right now, Hank placed one hand on the steering wheel as he strummed his fingers idly.He glanced at the clock on the dashboard. It was now 11:15 pm, and the lights in Summer's room were still on like how they used to be. The only difference now was that he could no longer see her silhouette waving goodbye to him.Hank thought back to what had happened in his office in the afternoon and forced a bitter smile onto his face. Summer had just pawned off all of her personal investments and trust funds to the bank in hopes of helping her family. She had also sold off all of the branded goods Fred had bought her for her birthday to get some more cash. Summer hadn't expected these second-hand goods to be worth much. So, she was surprised to find that someone had bought them all for a price much higher than she had expected. Her jaw dropped when she took the money from the vendor who had helped her sell her goods. "Did the buyer leave any way for me to communicate with them?"When the owner shook his head, Summer pressed on relentlessly. "So, what did the buyer look like? Was it a man or a woman?"She proceeded to describe Hank's and Simone's appearance to the owner, but the owner insisted that the buyer wasn't either of them.According to the owner, the buyer was a tall and handsome man who seemed quite powerful.Summer had racked her brain, trying to think of anyone she knew who fit that description. "Of course. I'm the chairman of Charter Corporation, after all. Why can't I continue working? I took care of Charter Corporation back when you got married, didn't I?" Fred patted his chest firmly, looking quite confident.Summer also believed that her father would be able to manage the company well if she left it in his care.Fred was the founder of Charter Corporation, after all. He had worked on it for decades, and he was the person who knew it the best. If he was the one taking over, Summer definitely had no reason to worry. However, Fred had already retired, so he should be relaxing at home at his age. Summer felt a little bad if he was suddenly asked to manage the company again.James comforted Summer, saying, "Summie, why don't you let him help you? Of all the people in Charter Corporation, he must be the person who's the most invested in the company other than you.""That's right." Fred smiled confidently. They were having a meal right now, so where was Fred going? Summer asked in confusion, "Dad, where are you going?"When Summer asked the question, Fred had already left the living room. He seemed to be on his way back to his room.Amelia explained, "He's preparing a gift for you.""Preparing a gift? What gift?"Soon, the gift Amelia mentioned was brought over to them.Fred was carrying a large cardboard box, which he processed to place on the table. He retrieved children's toys, baby clothes, and a jigsaw puzzle from the box.Summer was speechless when she saw that. So this was the sort of gift Amelia was talking about. But why would Fred give her these things out of the blue?Holding the clothes, Fred explained gleefully, "Several months ago, Amelia and I were shopping when we came across some baby products. We were wondering when you'd have children, and we feared that you wouldn't be able to buy all the baby products you would need, so we bought some ahead of time."Summer s

Nearby, James faked a cough as if there was another matter at hand. Noticing something off with his expression, Summer thought that he choked on something, so she asked, "Would you like some water?""No, thanks… Summie, did you forget why we came here in the first place?"Thanks to James' reminder, Summer finally remembered that she wasn't here for a simple visit. She had to tell her parents the good news of her pregnancy. At that moment, Amelia and Fred were leisurely enjoying the food. Summer knew that if they heard the news, they might get overwhelmed with emotion, so she decided to give them a heads-up. "Dad, Mom, we actually came here to tell you an important piece of news. Maybe you can stop eating for now.""What's the matter?" Fred asked curiously."Well… This is a very serious matter. Before I break the news, I'd like you to be as calm as possible. Please don't get too worked up."When Amelia and Fred heard that, they exchanged glances. They had no idea what exactly Summ

For example, Summer and James were taking a walk in the park. They might look like they were alone, but in reality, more than a dozen bodyguards were hiding in bushes and various corners of the park. To protect the child, the Quigleys pulled out all the stops to ensure Summer's safety."Alright, I get it." Summer chose to compromise. She was living a wonderful life at the Quigley residence, after all, so she felt like she shouldn't ask for too much. Also, as Caroline had said, Summer would regain freedom once she gave birth to the child. Summer would be able to live her happy life with James then, and Caroline wouldn't be around to nag her about the child. The next morning, the Quigleys arranged for a luxurious limousine to send Summer and James to the Charter Estate. Amelia and Fred already knew that their daughter would be coming over, so they were waiting at the entrance. When they saw their dear daughter, elated expressions appeared on their faces."Summer, you're back! We've p

Hence, Summer could do whatever she pleased. If Caroline dared to restrict her freedom, Summer would be upset, and Caroline wouldn't want that.As Summer walked along the even path of the park, she did some stretches to loosen up. "It's a nice life. Before this, I was worried that something bad might happen if I returned to the Quigley residence, but now, it looks like I was overthinking it. Caroline is very good to me, and the others respect me too.""I'm glad to hear that. I was also worried that you wouldn't be able to get used to staying in the Quigley residence. You're pregnant, after all." James glanced at Summer's belly, his eyes filled with fatherly love and tenderness. By the looks of it, he had intended to be a father a long time ago."Hold your horses. I've only been pregnant for three weeks. They say that the baby will be born after ten months of pregnancy, and it's not even been a month yet, let alone ten." With that, Summer suddenly held James' hand and guided it tow

What would it mean to Howe if he gave up on the position of the head of the family? It meant that he would have to depend on someone else to survive, and he would be giving up on glory and riches along with a life filled with extravagance. Thanks to his wealthy background, Howe was already used to life like this. If James became the head of the family in the future, he might exercise his authority as the head of the family to limit Howe's movements. Howe would be stripped of freedom.Maeve felt that Howe was right as well. Her current life of luxury was built upon mountains of cash. If Howe didn't get to be the head of the family, he would definitely face restrictions."Howe, I want you to be the head of the family as well, but do you really have confidence in your capabilities? Your brother is so outstanding, and he's the official heir, too."Maeve hit the nail on the head. This was exactly what Howe was worried about as well. There was a world of difference between him and James,

So, when Caroline asked her to stay in the Quigley residence, Summer somewhat reluctantly agreed. At noon the next day, dark clouds filled the sky, making it look bleak. However, in the bustling Rosseera City, things were as lively as usual. In a luxury hotel situated in the city center, Howe was sitting on a chair, holding a glass of wine in one hand while his other arm was wrapped around the waist of a beautiful woman. At that moment, his expression was as gloomy as the weather. The young woman was good at reading the room. Extending her fingers, she traced circles on Howe's pink shirt. She asked, "What's the matter, Howe? You seem to be in a bad mood today. Could there be anyone in Rosseera City who's bold enough to offend you?""Hmph…" Howe didn't say a word. Instead, he downed the whole glass of wine.Noticing that he wasn't saying anything, the young woman pursed her lips and planted a kiss on his cheek. Smiling, she asked, "What's going on? James didn't want to agree to this arrangement. Even though it wasn't explicitly mentioned, he was fully aware that Summer didn't want to stay at the Quigley residence. Hence, he said, "I'll take care of Summer, Mom. I even hired Tina to look after her needs. You know how dependable Tina is. With her around, everything will be fine.""Nonsense. Even if Tina was there, there's only so much she can do on her own. This Quigley grandchild is extremely important. I can't just let her handle everything by herself.""That won't be an issue, Mom. Besides, Summer won't feel comfortable staying here either." Summer's feelings were James' top priority. Caroline could see this as well. In the end, the decision was Summer's to make. So, instead of addressing James, she turned to Summer and asked, "Would you like to stay at the Quigley residence, Summie?"If it were up to Summer, she'd say no. There was no way she would want to stay here out of her own free will. Just the mere sight of Caroli

Howe was the quietest person at the table. He was dressed in a shirt with floral patterns, and his hair was slightly curly. He was as still as a rock. He had a look of terror on his face for a while now—he didn't know that Summer was pregnant. Now that his parents were talking about it, he immediately asked, "Pregnant? Is Summer pregnant?""Yes, she is—haven't you heard?" Caroline replied. "No… How is she suddenly pregnant? I didn't hear anything about it until now." "I only found out recently as well." Caroline's hand moved over her mouth before she continued, "Isn't it great? You're going to be an uncle soon.""Yeah. I can't wait." Howe put on a forced smile.Everyone in the family was overjoyed by the news—except Howe Quigley. The Quigleys had a family rule. If the heir had a child, his position as the head of the family would be set in stone. So, if James welcomed a baby, Howe would lose the opportunity to take his place as the family heir.
