"Leon, where are you?"
Athena's voice trembled as she pressed the redial button on her phone. Her fifth call in the past hour had been met only with the cold sound of a waiting tone. Worry gnawed at her, making her bite her lower lip, especially after her mother had called from the hospital, weakly repeating her husband's name.
"Mrs. Athena? Excuse me, but shall we leave now? Perhaps Mr. Leon is still stuck on the city’s connecting road?" Edward, her assistant, suddenly approached, nearly causing the wine glass in her tightly gripped hand to slip.
"I can't calm down until I see my husband, Ed. He promised to be with me, and my mother's call earlier... What if he's in some kind of trouble right now?" Athena sighed heavily, the finest goose feathers adorning her wide-brimmed hat shifting slightly with her breath.
"But, ma'am—"
"The businessman hosting this event is one of Leon's new associates, Ed. It would be better for me to arrive with him to avoid questions from the reporters that will only give me a headache."
"Alright, ma'am. How about delaying your departure for another ten minutes? I’ll notify the event organizers of the change."
Nodding, Athena let her assistant leave. With her fingers clad in white mesh gloves, she reached for her phone again. She intended to call her husband once more but was distracted by a notification that shattered her heart.
"Impossible! How could they be together?!"

Flashes of light alternated, illuminating Athena’s beautiful face as she stepped out of a black limousine. The clicking of cameras grew louder as she walked down the red carpet, forcing a fake smile and a soft wave of her delicate fingers.
Who didn’t know Athena Rose Waverly? In addition to being a talented pianist, her last name alone revealed her to be the daughter of a renowned business mogul. Born into fame, her name echoed across the nation, especially after her marriage to Leon Alexander Thorne—a man coveted by many women.
"Mrs. Athena? You’ve arrived alone at tonight's party? Where is Mr. Leon? Weren’t you both listed to attend together this evening?"
"Yes, Mrs. Athena. Where is your husband? Could the rumors be true? Is your marriage on the rocks after less than a year?"
"So, the photos circulating on social media are real, Mrs. Athena? Your husband is having an affair with your best friend? Is this the worst birthday gift you’ve ever received, Mrs. Athena?"
Forcing another smile, Athena continued walking, ignoring the reporters swarming her. Her dazzling evening gown reflected the light from the crystal chandeliers, making her appear mesmerizing to everyone present, though beneath her graceful smile lay a turmoil she couldn’t dispel.
"Mrs. Athena, it’s time. Everyone is eagerly awaiting your piano performance," Edward whispered, snapping her out of her reverie.
"Alright, don’t forget to signal me if my husband arrives." Athena tried to remain positive, but before heading to the stage, she turned to look at the man behind her with a slightly quivering gaze. "Do you think, I haven’t been a perfect wife for Leon?"
"Excuse me, ma’am?"
"Ah, it’s nothing. I... I’m just nervous!" She shook her head, ending the conversation with a smile. For the first time, she felt unsure of herself. But despite her doubts, she resolved to deliver her best performance that night.
"Good! It feels like I’m about to play the soundtrack to my own downfall!"
With her mask of composure firmly in place, Athena waved to the guests. She forced herself to banish the haunting image of her husband’s intimate photo with her best friend, captivating everyone with her performance—including someone watching her from afar.
"Perfect! Give it your all tonight, darling. Enjoy this moment while you can, for tonight marks your ruin!"
Applause and cheers erupted as Athena’s music bewitched the audience. She delivered the climax of her piece masterfully, channeling her shattered emotions into the melody.
"Mrs. Athena? The host of the event and the Mayor would like to speak with you. They seem deeply impressed by your performance tonight," Edward said, approaching with a drink in hand.
"How can I socialize when my mind and heart are in utter chaos, Ed?" Athena quickly wiped away a tear before accepting the drink. "Please find an excuse for me. Tell them I’ll speak with them another time."
"Understood, ma’am. I’ll let them know. Please wait here for a moment, and then—"
"I want to leave on my own. Give me your car keys; I’ll use the back gate to avoid the reporters. Apologize to everyone on my behalf for leaving early."
Without further ado, Athena downed the drink Edward had handed her. She frowned slightly at its odd taste but dismissed the feeling, unaware of the looming danger.
"Mr. Leon, Mrs. Athena has left the event as predicted!"
Oblivious to the conversation behind her, Athena continued walking away. Though the back gate was still busy, it offered respite from the reporters who stirred her childhood trauma—especially now, with Leon’s rumored affair circulating widely.
"How could Leon and Crystal have been carrying on behind my back? I... I can’t believe they’d do this to me!" Athena muttered, gripping the steering wheel tightly as she drove.
The quiet of the night road gave her the freedom to accelerate. She pushed Edward’s car to its limit under the dim glow of the streetlights. Her hands trembled on the wheel, her mind consumed by the photos of her husband and best friend at a hotel.
[They look so intimate. Are you sure they’re just friends?]
The text from an unknown number echoed in her head. Athena’s headache worsened. Finally, the tears she’d held back spilled freely, leaving her sobbing as pain tore through her heart.
"How could you do this to me, Leon? I love you so much, but why did you betray me like this?!"
The storm of emotions caused her head to throb. Her vision darkened as she reflexively swerved the car, sending it skidding. A deafening crash reverberated as sparks flew.
"This is your downfall, Athena!"
"How? Did you make sure everything was safe before the police and the hospital staff started the evacuation?"A faint voice gradually pulled Athena out of her long unconsciousness. She winced in pain, realizing that parts of her body couldn’t move freely. Athena tried to identify the voice she had just heard, but she heard nothing further until the sound of a creaking door made her instinctively close her eyes again."Is she still unconscious?" Athena tried to calm her pounding heart as she recognized Leon's voice. Her breathing became shallow as she gripped the thin blanket that partially covered her body."The doctor said Mrs. Athena will wake up soon, Sir. She didn’t suffer severe injuries thanks to the immediate help she received, but….""But she has some minor wounds and a broken right arm? Tsk, how disappointing! Why couldn’t it be more serious?"Startled again, Athena found it increasingly difficult to swallow. Her husband's cold tone echoed clearly in her ears. Her eyes began
Gazing sorrowfully at the grand house she once considered her palace of happiness, Athena could only cry silently. After spending several days in the hospital, her heart grew increasingly restless. Her return home meant that Leon could freely do anything to her, including mistreating her."Mrs. Athena, please come with me!" Edward’s voice suddenly broke the silence, causing Athena to turn her head. She immediately brushed off the hand of her assistant, who had now become Leon’s accomplice, and struggled to walk on her own, despite her unsteady steps."Well, well... So you’ve been allowed to leave the hospital?"To her surprise, Athena encountered Crystal there. Her wide eyes narrowed sharply, a gesture that was met with only a faint smile from the woman in front of her."How are you, Athena? I’m so sorry about the accident you had. Leon told me that your hand is paralyzed and you’ve lost your voice. How does it feel, Athena? It must be painful, right?" Crystal continued, taking a sma
"What?"Athena froze, staring at the man in front of her. Her mouth made no sound. She was only speaking in her mind. But Arthur, who seemed to read her thoughts, shook his head as if answering her question. With an unreadable expression, the man casually closed the door behind him. There was something peculiar about him. His gaze was sharp but not entirely threatening. Every movement he made was deliberate as if he were playing a role."He’s talking about revenge plans?" Athena murmured anxiously in her mind. "Who is he? And why did he say he was happy to see me again earlier?"Feeling his presence being observed, Arthur pretended to be busy with the dusty items around him. Especially after he increasingly felt as if Athena’s hazel eyes were dissecting him."Who are you?" Athena finally asked, her voice barely audible. Arthur turned to her coldly. Within seconds, he covered her mouth and pinned her onto the bed."Shh… Don’t be reckless!" he hissed sharply, causing Athena’s hazel eyes
"Damn it! So this disabled woman dares to defy me?!"Leon screamed internally. His face turned red as he prepared to snatch the small notebook Athena was holding, but Crystal moved first, gently stroking his thigh."Calm down, babe. Let that disabled woman do whatever she wants. She’ll never be able to beat us!" Crystal whispered, casting a disdainful glance at Athena.Turning his attention back to his wife, Leon suddenly smirked. Athena had no idea what was going through his mind, but one thing was clear—she was determined not to remain under the control of this cunning man."Ah, I’m relieved to hear that rumor wasn’t true. Honestly, I was worried it might affect your new project, Mr. Leon. As far as I know, Mrs. Athena still plays a significant role in the company you manage," said one of Leon’s business partners, prompting Athena to nod gracefully."Oh, so Mrs. Athena still has a significant role in the company?""Yes, Mr. Mayor," Leon interjected, trying to regain control of the c
Athena froze, trying to hold back her tears. She fought to endure the pain in her heart and body. Arthur's words felt like a shot of encouragement, almost pulling her back into the mysterious gray eyes before her."This is your phone. You can use it to contact me in emergencies." Arthur suddenly pulled something from his pocket leaving Athena stunned."Impossible! How is this phone still intact?""When I first found it, the screen and casing were quite damaged. Luckily, the data—""So, you were the one who found it? How long have you known me, Arthur? Are you the one who first found me after the accident?"Silent for a moment, Arthur then reached for the medicine box. He immediately treated the wound on the tip of Athena's lip with great care, letting the woman in front of him continue to wonder inwardly."Arthur...""May I remove the bandage on your hand? The doctor was supposed to change it and check your condition yesterday, but—""Leon canceled everything?" Athena sighed in resign
"Ahh! I love your touch, babe!"Leon smiled as he adjusted his shirt buttons. He was truly proud of his ability to seduce women, especially this time, as Crystal had moaned his name repeatedly after successfully forcing Athena out of the room. His idea to get rid of Athena had worked, hadn't it? It wasn't just successful, it was downright insane! No one would have suspected Leon's audacity to flirt with another woman in front of his wife. And no one could endure being in Athena's position."I think that woman won't dare to bother us anymore, babe," Crystal said as she rose from the desk where she had been lying moments ago. She walked toward the window, straightening her tight dress to ensure no one had been spying on her and Leon's activities."Hmm, we'll see. I doubt a woman like her will give up so easily," Leon replied coolly, causing Crystal to turn back toward him immediately."What do you mean? Do you think Athena plans to get back at us?"Nodding, Leon looked over the wealth tr
Athena held her breath as she entered the conference room. With confident steps, she walked to her seat at the end of the long table, ignoring the gazes fixated on her."It’s time, Athena!""Damn it! She dared to show up?" Leon muttered to himself, his eyes narrowing. "I’m sure she’s taken that document. How can she be so calm?"Noticing her husband’s piercing stare, Athena responded with a faint smile. The room fell silent as she finally settled into her seat. Moments later, the focus shifted back to the meeting’s leader, although the tension in the air had noticeably thickened."Alright, now that everyone’s here, I’d like to discuss some supporting facilities. The plan is for our company to collaborate with several private entities," Leon began, masking his irritation."Hmm, what you mean is, you’re looking for ways to gain more profit?" Athena thought silently. "I won’t let that happen, Leon. This is a charity project, which is why I insisted you take it in the first place.""Well,
Panting, Leon stared at Athena in disbelief once more. The aura of the woman before him was utterly different. The Athena he used to know—weak and easy to bully—now seemed powerful and fearless. Her gaze was strong, her eyes sharp and unwavering. Even her smirk bore an uncanny resemblance to his own when he used to dominate her."Damn it!" Leon growled, realizing he had walked straight into his wife’s trap."What’s wrong? Regretting it and thinking of apologizing to me?" Athena briefly ran her hand along her husband’s sharp jawline, a gesture that made Crystal’s eyes widen in shock outside the room. "Too bad, my dear husband. It’s already too late!""Leon! Athena! What the hell is going on? Let me in!"Ignoring the jealous outburst of her former friend, Athena adjusted the collar of her husband's shirt, which she had yanked earlier. "Remember my words, my dear husband. I won’t sit quietly, especially if you dare disturb my mother!""Athena, wait!"Disregarding Leon’s call, Athena walk
The ocean whispered just beyond the sand, and a soft breeze tangled through Athena’s hair as she leaned gently against Arthur’s side. The two of them sat on a blanket near the shore, not far from their villa—barefoot, warm, and wrapped in the glow of a fire pit flickering beside them. The night had draped its velvet cloak over the island, and above, a sea of stars shimmered like scattered diamonds."It feels like the sky is blessing us tonight." Athena looked up, her voice a quiet melody. Arthur followed her gaze, then turned to her with a soft smile."It’s because you’re under it!"She laughed lightly, nudging him with her shoulder. "Stop that, prince. You’re getting too good at the poetic stuff!""You mean the truth?"Athena rested her head on his shoulder then, letting her eyes close for a moment. "I used to pray for peace. For moments
"Imagining someone?"The soft hum of the airport lounge faded into the background the moment Athena looked up and saw him. Her breath hitched. He wasn’t supposed to be here. Not today. Not yet."You’re early," she said, trying to keep her voice steady as she stood from her seat. Her hands clutched the handle of her suitcase just a little too tightly. "You told me you’d fly out tomorrow."Arthur gave her that familiar half-smile, the one that always left her slightly disarmed. "Change of plans," he said casually. "Consider it a surprise.""A surprise?" Athena narrowed her eyes. She echoed, unconvinced. "Or… did something happen with Reyna?"He sighed, and the silence between them told her everything before his words did."You always read me too well, dear," Arthur said at last, reaching up to rub the back of his neck. "Yeah... We argue
Leon’s muscles ached, his shirt clung to his skin from sweat, and yet, Crystal was nowhere near done tormenting him."Move the dresser to the left wall!" she said nonchalantly, lounging on her bed as if she weren’t running him ragged."Again?" Leon grunted while wiping some of the sweat from his forehead. "I just moved it ten minutes ago!""Then move it back to the right." Crystal didn’t even glance up from her phone. "I’ve changed my mind.""You’ve changed your mind five times already, Crystal!""And you’ve been whining five times too many, Leon!" she snapped back while looking back sharply. "Now, get moving! Faster!"Grumbling under his breath, Leon dragged the heavy piece of furniture back to its original spot, sweat dripping from his brow. The clock ticked past midnight, but Crystal showed no signs of giving him a break
The dinner table was set with elegance, but the atmosphere simmered with tension. Crystal poked at her food while eyeing her mother and Leon, waiting for someone to say something that would finally make sense of this unexpected reunion."Alright, Mom," she began casually, stirring her drink but watching her mother intently. "Why don’t you tell us what this is really about?"But Caroline simply smiled and began pouring Leon a glass of wine first. "Relax, sweetie. Let the guest eat first.""Of course, the ‘guest’ gets special treatment." Crystal huffed under her breath, clearly annoyed.Hearing her daughter's grumbling, Caroline laughed. But it was only for a moment because she finally told Crystal and Leon to finish their food first before she started talking."Well," she said, dabbing her lips with a napkin. "I freed Leon because someone asked me to. Someone who
Arthur stood still for a moment before finally stopping Athena from stepping back by wrapping his arms around her slender waist. He stared at her even more intently as she tried to move away, then leaned in and gently returned her kiss.As if understanding his intention, Athena finally allowed herself to relax in his embrace again. Truthfully, she wasn’t ready to be apart from him yet. She kissed him back lovingly before one of her hands moved to gently stroke his strong jawline."I’m going to meet Reyna first. It’s her first time at this office, so she might be feeling a little lost right now."Nodding, Arthur gave her red lips another kiss, short but sweet. "Please don’t take her words and rejections too personally. Like you said before, she might still be adjusting."Gazing once more at the face of the woman who had become his strength, Athena smiled softly. This time, her
Both Athena and Reyna sat frozen in disbelief at Arthur’s sudden declaration.Athena’s lips parted slightly, her breath catching in her throat. Marriage? Next month? He had never said anything so certain, so definite. Her heart raced, not just because of the surprise, but because the weight of those words hit harder than she expected.Reyna, on the other hand, looked utterly stunned—her eyes wide, her posture stiff. "What did you just say?" she asked, her voice tight with disbelief. "You’re marrying her… next month?""Yes!" Arthur said didn’t flinch. "I’ve made up my mind!"Reyna shot up from her seat, her fists clenched at her sides. "You can’t be serious, Arthur! You’re going to marry her in the middle of all this... while I’ve made it clear I don’t agree?! Have you even thought this through?!""I have," he repl
Trying to take a deep breath, Athena finally couldn’t resist the urge to stand again. Slowly, she pulled away from Arthur’s embrace before stepping back and sitting down in her chair, leaning back as she tried to process everything—everything that suddenly felt so tense and overwhelming. After just seeing a woman who looked like Crystal, Arthur now told her that Leon had been released—bailed out by someone.Who had done all of this? Was the person who freed them the same individual? Her entire body shivered with fear. Her eyes trembled. She was terrified that something big was lurking in the shadows—especially because she was sure that Leon and Crystal wouldn’t let her off easily after she had sent them to prison."I’m sorry for finding all this out so late," Arthur said with deep regret, now kneeling in front of her and holding both of her hands. "But I’m sure none of this
Athena hesitated for a moment as her phone continued to ring, Arthur's name glowing on the screen. After reading his message she couldn't bring herself to ignore him any longer. With a deep breath, she finally accepted the call.["Finally, you answered my call, dear. Where are you right now? I’ve been so worried about you. Why have you been ignoring my messages?"]"I... I’m on my way to the office," she replied hesitantly, gripping her phone tightly. "Sorry, I haven’t had the chance to reply to your messages. Lately, I’ve been…"Screech! Before Athena could finish her sentence, the car she was in suddenly came to a screeching halt. Her body lurched forward, and her head hit the seat in front of her with a painful thud."Ahh…," she winced, clutching her forehead.["Dear? What just happened?"] Arthur’s worried voice c
"Athena, Athena… Why especially her?"Crystal chuckled again before refilling the wine glass in front of her. Quietly, she observed the expression on her biological mother’s face. There was a flash of emotion in the woman’s eyes. Her face looked tense as if she were trying to suppress a surge of anger in her chest."You’ll understand once you accept me as your biological mother," she replied quickly, making Crystal shake her head briefly."So you’re still going to act mysterious while I know absolutely nothing about you?""I’ll give you anything you want, as a way to show how sorry I am for abandoning you all this time," Caroline tried to persuade her relentlessly. "You’ve felt it over the past month, haven’t you? I can give you anything you desire, including getting Leon out of prison!""And now you know about my relationship with
