“Eh?” I stared at him blankly.
Did he just call himself Alaric Greyhound? As in THE Alaric Greyhound that I've heard of?! The Lycan King of this Kingdom?
I know I've gone through a lot from last night till now, but this couldn't be real. What would the infamous King of such a prosperous kingdom be doing in the dregs? Or was this how he greeted all the new intakes?
“Are you alright?” His bass voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
I sniffled and nodded quickly, “Y-Yes, your Highness. Thanks to you.”
He smiled, making him more handsome than he already was, “Good to know. Now…” he turned toward the other three men, that were kneeling before the carriage driver, who was still writhing in pain.
“I've heard about you guys and the stunts you've been pulling for a long time now,” Alaric said, slipping his hands into his pockets.
The three men turned on their knees and looked up to him in fear.
“All of that ends today,” Alaric added.
“Please, your Highness. We were only punishing the offenders,” they sunk their faces to the ground and pleased shakily.
“And all the offenders only happen to be women?” Alaric creased his brows. Then he scoffed, “Please, spare me the act. What do you take me for?”
“Please, temper justice with mercy,” they pleased again, almost drilling the ground with their heads.
“Justice? Tch,” he clicked his tongue. “Raise your heads.”
“No, your Highness. We rather--”
Alaric cut in with an authoritative tone, “RAISE YOUR HEADS!”
Instantly, and with a whimper, the men raised their heads like robots.
I knitted my brows, unsure of what just happened. It seemed like magic, with the way they responded to his yell. Or maybe that was just how fearful they were? Who knows? I didn't care, I was enjoying the show.
“So how do you guys want to die?” Alaric asked coldly.
The men shuddered.
Then he stood beside me and smirked, “You might want to close your eyes for this.”
“Hm?” I was bit puzzled. What kind of torture was he going to inflict on them that I hadn't seen before?
One of the men abandoned his comrades and fled for his life. Heh, what a coward. I couldn't blame him though.
Just then, Alaric disappeared from my side and halted before the fleeing man.
“Going somewhere?” He said, before protracting his right hand claws and slashing the man’s neck, lopping off his head.
My face went grim. He was going to kill them!! And he already had one down.
He finished them off in the blink of an eye and stood before me, wiping his hands clean with a damp towel. I wonder where he got it from.
He looked into my eyes and sighed, “I told you to close your eyes.”
I took a step back, my heart palpitating. I felt no remorse towards the men. What I felt was fear. Was this how the Lycan King treated everyone that he didn't like? I didn't want to be on that list.
It seemed he could read my emotions, because he smiled and said, “Don't worry. Those men deseved it. A lot of women have died in their hands. And the policy in the kingdom doesn't allow that. Once you kill unjustly, your death is inevitable.”
“S-So you don't…?” I stuttered.
He shook his head, “No, I don't go about killing all the wrongdoers. I was just bored today and decided to check on the beautiful princess that had arrived.”
I didn't know why, but I blushed at his remark. I guess he was a kind person at heart, even though he looked like a monster when he killed those men.
“And I must apologise. You haven't even spent a day here and you had to go through this. Trust me, the rest of your stay here will be much better,” he assured me and took my left hand. Then he smoothened my roughened hair and cleaned the teardrops under my eyes.
His big hand was warm and strong. I wanted to rest my cheek on it forever.
“Shall we?” He gently pulled me away from the tree and led me out of the woods.
Everyone at the ‘slave area’? Gasped in shock as they saw the two of us walk out of the treeline. They must have been stunned as to why the Lycan King himself was holding my hand and escorting me like a gentleman. Well, I hope they don't ask me any questions, because I'm also as surprised as them.
“We call this place the rear court,” Alpha Alaric said as though he could read my perturbed mind.
He dropped me off with one of the women that oversaw the area, and I was immediately put to work.
The Lycan King would often visit me from time to time, almost everyday and we'd talk at length. What did we talk about? I have no idea. I was always so lost in his eyes, and thought of why he was stooping so low to my level. His voice always gave me chills; my heart throbbed at every word he spoke.
Then, all of a sudden, he stopped showing up. For about a month or so. I wasn't worried much; I enjoyed it while I lasted.
Who was I kidding? I silently longed for the day he'd return.
And then, as though a god of goddess listened and decided to answer my prayers, I received a letter from the palace.
I skimmed through the contents in a jiffy and my eyes dilated.
The parchment fell from my hand as I remained in a daze.
The Lycan King wants me to be his personal maid!
My grip on the handle of my bag tightened as I lifted it closer to my chest. Looking outside the window of the carriage, I gazed at the grand mansion looming ahead. Several tall pillars stood at different sections of the mansion and they were so large that I could only imagine how thick they were going to be if I was to get close to them. Thick ivy crawled up the pillars and scattered across the stone wall of the mansion, giving it shades of green that added to it's magnificence. Large arched windows lined the walls, giving off a golden glint as the sun hit their glass. The light casted off of it exuded a warm, almost inviting glow that seemed to be a stark contrast to the cold and imposing features of the building. My grip on my bag lessened.Slowly, the carriage rode into the mansion's compound and the uncomfortable graveled path beneath it's wheels slowly transitioned to smooth cobblestones. I was still taking in my new surrounding when the carriage suddenly came to a halt at th
Alpha Alaric stood before the fireplace, one hand in pocket, the other holding a glass of wine, and his face turned towards a large picture that stood at the end of the room. Large drapes covered the windows, blocking out the sun outside. Little light peaked in from one of the windows occasionally as it swerved in the small draughty breeze that managed to slip in through the slots of the windows. The room was dimly lit, the flickering flames of the candles around and the soft-roaring fire in the fireplace being the only source of light. The light from these flames cast off different shadows that crossed the room and danced around the place. Somehow, I felt at ease as I stood in the room.Alpha Alaric took in a sip from his wine as he continued staring at the picture. Now curious as to why he was looking at it, I slowly turned to the large frame handing on the wall by a suit of armour.Although partially obscured by the low light, I managed to see what was on the picture. It looked l
The servants quarters weren't as good as I thought they would be. Mud and different types of waste surrounded the space, giving it a very dirty look. I hoped the inside looked much better than the outside. Boy, was I wrong? I entered the room that had been assigned to me and sighed. Throwing my bag to the ground, I walked over to the closed window and pushed it open. A cloud of dust swirled in the dim light, filling the entire room as the window creaked open. Coughing and sneezing, I quickly placed my hands over my nose and ran over to the window. I took in a deep breath of the air outside, only to gag as the air filled my lungs. I quickly closed the window and retreated back into the room as the urge to throw up filled me. I cupped my hands over my nose as I ran around the place, looking for some kind of relief. The stale, musty odour that had been trapped inside the room was overwhelming and somehow seemed to seep in through the crevices of my palm, making the situation even wor
"Hey, Elora," I heard someone call out. Dropping the basket I held to the ground, I lifted my head in the direction of the call and found Gadot skipping towards me. She looked giddy as always. I wondered how she did that. "Hey, Gadot," I replied to her as I returned my attention to my assigned work. I had to be done pruning the roses before noon, and I was far behind schedule already. It had been two days since I moved into the Lycan King's Alaric's mansion, and I was slowly beginning to adjust to the rhythms of life here. Waking up really early and sleeping really late was something that I had begun to get used to back at the rear court, so adapting to that lifestyle here wasn't hard. What was hard, though, was the amount of chores given. The tour that was given to me around the mansion made me realise how really big this place was, but it didn't truly sink in until I took up my chores yesterday. I and three maidservants had been assigned the meeting room to clean, and it quickl
"The Lycan King awaits you." I looked at the guard who had brought me here for a few moments before turning to the door that separated me from the Alpha. Slowly, I approached the large door as my heart pounded in my ears. Taking in a deep breath, I reached for it, my knuckle hovering over it's frame. I had barely touched the wood when I suddenly heard a voice from the other side call, "Enter, Elora." I turned to the guard who gave me a small nod before taking some steps back. I hesitated for a moment before placing my hands on the brass handle. Exhaling softly, I pushed the door open and stepped inside. The room was large and I awed at its opulence. Large ornaments and artworks stood at different sections of the room. The fireplace was lit, giving the place a small warm glow. Paintings hung on the walls, adding to the artistic aura that the room exuded. A large diamond encrusted chandelier hung f
"Wait, what?" Gadot muttered as she dropped down on my bed. Her face was squeezed into a frown. I had never seen her look so confused before. "So... he offered you... the position of his personal servant?" "Yeah," I said with a small laugh as I picked up one of my clothe from the wardrobe and dropped it into my bag. "It was a strange offer with a strange timing but I am kind of excited to hear about it, you know." "Well... I guess you should be," Gadot mumbled as she placed her hands on her laps and began fiddling her fingers. She paused for some moments before asking, "so, he didn't... reprimand you or give you a punishment or something. He just... asked if you could take the position.""I wouldn't say he asked me if I could take it," I replied with a small shrug as I folded the clothe and shoved it into my bag. "He more like... placed it on me. There was no room for questions or nothing. He just... gave it to me." I paused just
I turned to my right and watched as three of the chefs that I had just seen, not more than ten minutes ago, slowly walked up to me. They all had a confused look on their faces as their gaze shifted from me to Alpha Alaric and then back to me. I knew the question that they had in their minds, one that they dared never ask. What was happening? Quickly wiping off the look that they had on their faces, the three walked up to me with smiles on their faces and the tip of their pen pressed against their notepads. "What would you like to eat today, Elora?" one of the chefs, the closest to me, said. I opened my mouth to give them a reply, but I just didn't know what to say. I glanced at the Lycan King, who sat across the table from me before turning back to the chefs. What was happening?? "Um, what do you... what do you have?" I asked the chefs as I clasped my hands a
"His green tea should not be too sweet and neither should it be too bitter. It has to be just right.""Alpha Alaric prefers his food to be ready before he wakes up from bed. And he wakes up quite early.""No matter where you are or what you're doing, you should always be quick to answer when the Lycan King calls for you. He hates to be kept waiting.""Alpha Alaric dislikes loud noises in the morning so you have to ensure that all of your works are done before he wakes up, quietly and without any disturbance.""Order is something that the Lycan King holds high. That is why his study must be meticulously organized. Everything in the room must be in it's designated place with nothing out of order."We had been walking for more than an hour now and the note that Madan Nazar had given me to fill was almost completely filled with the details and instructions that she was handing to me. My fingers were beg
