Nope, I am not going there.

“I thought everyone had left for the day,” I said, my tone gruff.

“I was on my way out in a few minutes. So this was the last file I had.”

She crossed the room and opened one of the filing cabinets, thumbing through several files before sliding the one in her hand away. It was only then that I noticed she had kicked off her boots.

“Making yourself comfortable?”

Gina looked over at the ankle boots on the ground before shrugging. “If I’m going to spend an entire day filing, I may as well be comfortable while doing it.”

I bit back what I wanted to say. I didn’t want to tell her she had completed a task that would take several days. The last thing I would do was admit that I had misjudged her.

Which I would admit only doing in the privacy of my mind. People her age didn’t often like to work. They were usually more involved in what was happening with their social lives than getting a job done.

She had moved quickly and gotten more work done than I anticipated. Of course, after she was gone, I would ensure that she had filed everything correctly, but I am confident she had.

“Are you going to keep blocking the door, or will you move so I can get my things and leave?” Gina asked as she pulled on her boots.

She gazed at me with those warm brown eyes, her look teasing though she was frowning as she pulled her boot on.

I didn’t know what to think about her, which bothered me.

Years of owning a successful, worldwide real estate company have taught me to read people well. I could get a good feel for who they were moments after meeting them.

Not Gina, though. There was nothing about her that made sense to me. She didn’t fit into any of the preconceived little boxes already in my head.

It was hard to know how to act around her when she was so different from anyone I had ever met.

“Sorry,” I said, stepping out of her way.

I followed her to the door, my gaze dropping to the sway of her hips now and then. Before unlocking the door, she grabbed a small leather backpack behind the front counter.

“Have a good night.”

She shrugged. “Maybe. After I get home, there’s much unpacking and a wedding dress to burn.”

While she walked down the street, I tried to figure out if she was joking or not.

By the time she disappeared, I still hadn’t figured it out.

I didn’t know whether that made me more attracted to her or less, but there was a part of me that wanted to find out, no Matter how wrong it was.

Gina

Amalia took the cowboy hat from the man across her and placed it with a sultry smirk on her head. It was the same look she used in university when she wanted to take a man home.

Although, I doubted she would end up at her house. Bringing a hook up to your dad’s home was a little awkward, even if he was at the same bar and trying not to watch us.

I looked up more than once through the night to find Brandon’s eyes already on me. His gaze burned a hole through me every time I caught him looking. He didn’t look away either, like some men did when you saw them staring.

Instead, he would tip the neck of his bottle in my direction before taking a sip.

It wasn’t flirting, but it didn’t feel like he wasn’t flirting.

Although, that was the way most of our interactions went over the last week.

When I looked up at him again, Brandon was talking to his friend, and a woman was standing with them. She put her hand on his arm, and he smiled at her like he wanted her.

Jealousy started to rear its ugly head, but I shoved it away. He was nothing more than an attractive older man in a bar.

I was single, young, and ready to have a good time after a failed engagement. However, there was no way I would spend my night pining over my best friend’s father.

Even though he looked like he was made to exist in my wildest dreams.

“Shots!” Amalia said, pushing a shot glass filled with clear liquid toward me.

I grinned, and we downed ours together. The alcohol went straight to my head, and the guilt I felt for lusting over Amalia’s dad went with it. He was an attractive man, and with the buzz the alcohol gave me, I wasn’t too concerned about whose father he was.

That might have made me the wrong person, but Tequila said I didn’t care.

“I’m going to be heading out with Reece in a few minutes,” Amalia said, grinning at me and wiggling her eyebrows. “Are you okay to get home alone?”

I smirked and shrugged. “I don’t know if I’ll go home alone, but I’m okay.”

Amalia bumped her hip against mine, screaming about my getting laid, before finding the cowboy she stole the hat from. I watched as they left the bar together, barely able to keep their hands off each other.

A long time ago, I had been like that with my ex.

Two months after finding out he was cheating on me, I was ready to start in a new town where nobody knew who I was.

I wasn’t interested in anything long-term. I wasn’t sure people wanted to settle down after going through a disastrous relationship.

As soon as Amalia was gone, I left the other people I was with. They were a few of her other friends, and they seemed friendly enough people, but I wanted to dance and be by myself.

The song changed as I stepped onto the dance floor, losing myself in the multitude of people. I moved my body to the beat, losing myself as the alcohol and inhibitions coursed through my veins.

Though I wasn’t drunk, I did have a buzz going. It was enough to dull the edges of the night without taking away my control.

Brandon was watching me as I danced. Though the woman was still beside him and his friend, talking a mile a minute, his eyes never left my body. I caught his gaze, rolling my hips as I spun in a slow circle.

The song changed to a slower one as I turned back around. He arched his eyebrow as I continued to dance, running my hands through my hair.

Even across the bar, I could feel the heat flowing between us. If the way he was looking at me had anything to do with what was on his mind, he wanted me as much as I wanted him.

“Hey there,” a blond man said, stopping before me. He blocked my view of Brandon, but that was fine.

It was for the best. I didn’t want to do something that I would regret.

Though I might not regret anything I did with him in the morning, I knew I would feel horrible if Amalia ever found out.

“Hey,” I said, smiling up at him. He was easy on the eyes, though he wasn’t Brandon.

“Mind if I have this dance?” He looked at me from beneath the brim of his ballcap, smiling as if he knew my deepest, darkest secrets.

“We were just leaving,” Brandon said, stepping around the man before me. “Come on, Gina; we have to get home soon.”

I rolled my eyes. “I’m going to stay and dance, thank you.”

“Gina, you’re drunk, and I have a car waiting outside to take us home. Let’s go.” Brandon’s voice was stern, sending a shiver down my spine.

As he reached for my hand, I was already picturing everything he could tell me to do. I would happily do them without question.

However, telling me what to do in public was entirely different from telling me what to do in the bedroom.

“Brandon, kindly fuck off. I was just about to dance with this guy here.”

“Over my dead body you are,” he said seconds before he threw me over his shoulder.

When Brandon looked back over at me, there was a slight smile on his face. “Have dinner with me.”“What?”My heart skipped a beat as he watched me, his gaze dropping to my mouth before moving back to my eyes.“Have dinner with me.”“How did we go from talking about a potential promotion to you wanting to get dinner with me?”He shrugged. “I’ve decided it’s time to stop pretending you aren’t the most intriguing woman I’ve ever met. I want to get to know you, which isn’t happening in this town.”“So, what, you want to run away to another town for dinner like a pair of teenagers trying to avoid their parents?”He smiled. “That could be fun. But no, I was thinking more like two adults tired of dancing around each other.”“Who doesn’t want Amalia to know.”Brandon’s smile dropped. “No. I don’t want Amalia to know yet. It’s still too new to tell you much, but I like her.”Mateo chuckled and took a sip of his beer. “So, there is something to tell then.”“Not really.” I listened as the band finished their first song before moving on to the next. “We’re just talking right now. I don’t know if it will go anywhere right now, so it didn’t seem worth mentioning.”Mateo smirked and drummed his fingers on the table. “If you say so. You can sit here, dreaming about this mystery woman, but I will find a woman to take home for the night.”He slid out of his seat, taking his beer with him as he entered the crowd. Since I agreed to go to the carnival, that had been all I thought about. We needed a believable story in case someone saw us together. It felt like I was ramming a knife through my chest, but my daughter was the only family I had left. I wasn’t going to alienate her. If breaking up with Gina was what it took to keep my daughter in my life, then that is what I had to do.“You’re too old for her. What the hell happens when you get even older? Will she spend the last good years of her life changing your diaper?” Tears tracked down Amalia’s cheeks. “And what about you? Are you going to spend the next few years trying to keep up with someone as young and ambitious as Gina?”As much as I hated to admit it, Amalia was making all the points that had spent the last several weeks circling through my mind.
