Elora
I was already mated to one man I wasn’t supposed to: Kael Stormrider, the man who loved my sister. Now, I was mated to my pack’s worst enemy as well?! Why didn’t I remain without a mate? I was better off locked up in my room in the pack house than in enemy territory. My eyes didn’t leave his amber ones as I stared intently at them. Sierra stirred softly within me. He was right when he said that she had been injured severely. As she awakened slowly, I began to feel the pull again. The scent of the silver haired man wafted through my nostrils; wet earth and rain…olive oil? The hairs at the back of my neck tingled under his gaze. It was the same feeling I had with Kael last night, and when his gaze softened, I could tell his wolf had recognized me. ‘Mate.’ Sierra purred. “Yes, another one.” I replied to her. I needed to speak to him. To tell him it was all a mistake and I needed to return home as a soon as possible. I wasn’t sure how many days had passed, but I had a wedding to prepare for. I gestured for writing materials with my left hand, and he tore his gaze away from me. I watched him stand to his full height. He was taller than any man I had ever seen. He walked to the table at the distal end of the room, picked up a scroll and a quill with his left hand, then a jar of ink with his right. The wet shirt traced the muscles of his back so perfectly, I found myself swallowing hard. “It is rude to stare, you know.” He said, turning to me. My eyes widened. Surely he didn’t… “I could feel your eyes on my back.” He placed the writing materials beside me. “Go ahead.” I took hold of them and began to write. It was terribly embarrassing. I ALREADY HAVE A MATE. ONE WHOM I AM SET TO MARRY. I AM VERY SORRY, BUT THERE SEEMS TO BE A MISTAKE SOMEWHERE. He frowned as he read through the lines. “Really?” He raised his right brow. “And I’m the mistake?” I said nothing. He sucked in a deep breath. “This man you’re mated to. Who is he?” My right hand trembled as I wrote. If he found out I was mated to his arch nemesis, would he kill me? Would he use me as a pawn to lure Kael here? Would he be irritated and let me go? I’ll never know unless I told him the truth. KAEL STORMRIDER. ALPHA OF STORMRIDER PACK. MY NAME IS ELORA VALEWIND. DAUGHTER OF GENERAL VAREK VALEWIND, BETA OF STORMRIDER PACK. Anger burned in his bright amber eyes like the sun, threatening to burn everything it set its sight on, including me. His fists rolled into tight balls beside him, and my heart skipped a beat. What was he going to do to me now that he knew who I was? The North and South had been sworn enemies for several decades. My bond with Kael was to bring an end to the war. But what about my bond with him? Ryker? The look of anger in his eyes vanished as soon as it came, and it was replaced with an unreadable stare. “That’s fine. He does sound like a very powerful man,” he moved to sit beside me. I shifted backwards, pressing my back against the headboard. “He’ll come looking for you in no time.” I tilted my head to the left to take a good look at him. Did he really think Kael would storm enemy territory for me? Maybe for Selene, but definitely not for me. WHAT IF HE DOESN’T? I wrote. His lips thinned into a pitiful smile as he leaned back, resting the weight of his body on his hands that were pressed against the soft mattress. “Do not be naive, princess. Of course he wouldn’t. The men who did what they did to you weren’t scavengers of any sort. They were trained assassins, hired rogues.” He stopped speaking and tilted his neck to look at me. “They were hired to kill you, princess. One would wonder why they had to drag you all the way here to do that. Someone in your pack doesn’t want you there. Who knows?” He leaned into me, and I flinched. “It might even be your mate.” I shot him a glare and grabbed the quill from the ink jar. With a frown on my face, I scribbled words on the scroll. HOW DARE YOU ASSUME SOMETHING LIKE THAT? He stifled a laugh. “Last time I heard of the scrawny prince of the north, he was to be married to a certain warrior by the name of Selene. Golden blonde hair and round tits.” His gaze fell to my breasts. “You do not have blonde hair, and might just be the skinniest female I’ve ever set my eyes on.” My scowl deepened, and it seemed to amuse him. “Worse still, you’re a mute. Fix the puzzle together, princess.” No way. I shook my head vehemently. He was insinuating Selene and Kael ordered those men to kill me. That it was a plot by the palace to get rid of me so Selene and Kael could marry. I couldn’t believe that. I refused to. Ryker scoffed and rose to his feet. “Regardless of whether it’s true or not, you cannot sit by and wait to find out. You might be a mute, but you’re also a silver wolf.” I…I am? Wait. I am! “I am a silver wolf, and I know the power that it holds. If you let me, I can give you the training you deserve. You could have died out there, princess. Silver wolves are never taken out that easily. We might be sworn enemies, but you’re my mate, and I can’t bear to have a powerless one. When we’re done with our training, you can decide if you want to leave or stay.” I was his enemy, yet he wanted to train me? What if this was a trap? He could be trying to make me comfortable so I don’t try to escape while planning to keep me here and turn me into some war tool. I DO NOT WANT POWER. I wrote. I JUST WANT TO BE SEEN AS MORE THAN A MUTE WOLF. When he read this, a smirk slowly stole its way to the right side of his face. Slowly, he lowered himself to the ground by squatting beside me. I watched him in silence as he placed both hands on top of each other on the bed and rested his chin on them. His bright eyes bore into mine. It took me everything not to look away. “I wouldn’t just see you, princess. I plan to make you into a woman no one else would be bold enough to mess with.” Something in my belly fluttered at his words. No man had ever spoken to me like that, or looked at me for as long as he did. He made me feel…heard. Surely, I could do something with that. If I returned to Kael now, I would just be the woman he was forced to marry. I’ll be of no use to him. If I wanted to prove myself to the Stormrider pack and to Kael, I had to become stronger. FINE. BUT ONLY FOR THREE MONTHS. AFTER THAT, YOU HAVE TO PROMISE TO LET ME GO. He nodded. “You have my word, princess.” Princess. The word left his lips with a gentleness that had heat burning in my chest. Was this the force of the mate bond as well? “Ryker, is everything alright?” I looked in the direction of the woman’s voice. Curvy, tall, and with short hair whose color I couldn’t make out in the dark. She stood at the door while it rained, and when her eyes settled on mine, they narrowed into a frown. “Kiara,” he called, rising to his feet and turning to look at her. Her frown dissolved into a smile immediately. “She’s awake. I thought to have a word with her.” Ryker continued. “We should let her rest then.” But the smile didn’t quite reach her eyes, and when she ushered Ryker out of the room, I couldn’t help but feel like something wasn’t right. I was in more trouble than I thought.Kael “We couldn’t find her, your majesty.” The guards chorused as they bowed their heads to the ground. I sucked in a deep breath and scratched my chin in thought. It had been five days since the meeting with our parents. She was never to be seen again after that. I had searched the entire pack, and even neighboring packs to the East and West. Everytime the guards came back without her, one thing became clearer. Elora was gone.On the first day, I had searched the entire pack house, checked the gardens, the training grounds, and even the little cabin she liked to sit in when she wanted to be alone. I had often found her there during my visits to Selene. Nothing. She wasn’t anywhere. At first, I told myself she was probably just taking a walk. Maybe she needed time to think. But as the minutes stretched into hours, and hours turned into days, ceased to make sense. Something was wrong. Her best friend, Camilla, hadn’t seen her since the eve of my coronation and mating ceremony
Elora I sat on the bed, my legs tucked under me, staring at the locked door. It had been days, maybe longer—I had no way of knowing. The only people I ever saw were the maids who brought my food and left without a word. I wasn’t allowed to leave until I was strong enough to start my training. It wasn’t my first time being locked up or hidden, still I felt like a prisoner. Then, the door opened and she walked in. She was tall, with short, dark hair and sharp eyes that looked like they could cut through steel. I recognized her from the other night. Kiara. Relief washed over me. Finally, someone I could talk to—well, communicate with. The maids never spoke to me, almost like they were afraid to. I grabbed my scroll and quickly started to scribble a message, but before I could finish, Kiara sighed and shook her head. “Don’t bother,” she said. “I can understand sign language just fine.” I paused, the quill hovering over the paper. Slowly, I set it down. Kiara pulled a chair close
Ryker“Anya, always watch your back! She can…” I spoke too late. A sword hit Anya from behind and she fell to the ground with her right knee first. Hagar moved quickly, swiping her left foot off the ground with her right, and Anya crumbled to the ground totally. The men cheered as Hagar emerged the winner. She was the recent addition to my warriors, and was only sixteen. Anya was older with about two years. A sense of pride filled me as I watched them with a smile on my face. These were my warriors, my brothers, and my sisters. There was nothing I wouldn’t give to them. Hagar turned to me and bowed, and I replied with a smile. Her cheeks turned tomato red, and she looked away quickly. Kiara appeared beside me. “The girls are growing fonder of you. You’re becoming their favorite commander.” I nodded in agreement. “I’m their king.” She heaved a sigh and reached for my hand. “Oh, Ryker. You’re so much more.” I said nothing in reply, only turning to her when I caught a whiff of E
ELORA The moment my eyelids parted to take in the sunlight, a dull ache spread through my body. It wasn’t as bad as last night, but it lingered nonetheless, and brought back cruel and painful memories to my mind. I almost died last night. I would have been dead if not for…I blinked against the soft morning light filtering through the tent as my eyes struggled to adjust. That was when I saw him.Ryker.He was seated on the chair beside my bed, his head tilted slightly against the backrest, eyes closed. Asleep. For a long moment, I just… looked at him. I didn’t know why I did it. I wasn’t supposed to spare him as much as a second glance knowing who he was and what his pack had done to mine in the past, their role in this war, in the death of women and children from all over. Maybe because it was easier than thinking about the pain. Or because I had never actually taken the time to look at him before.Unlike Kael who had handsome gentle features, Ryker’s face was strong with sharp
RYKER Elora sat on the edge of the bed, her dark eyes locked onto mine as a frown stretched the gentle features of her face. The sunlight filtering through the tent’s entrance bathed her in a soft glow, but there was nothing delicate about her expression.“I’m not going back,” she said again, and I could hear her voice in my head even after I told her I didn’t want to. She was stubborn, resilient. I could give her that. “I’m going to become stronger,” she continued. I studied her, waiting for hesitation, fear—anything to show that she wasn’t thinking clearly. But there was none. Only resolve. Did she know what she was getting into? The wolves of the North were everything we were rumored to be, and worse. Yes. I had heard her thoughts earlier. “You could have died last night,” I reminded her. “If you stay here, the pain will only continue. Odessa said—”“I have told you, I don’t care what the healer said,” she cut in. “Just give me the potions I need for the pain, and I will
ELORA One week had passed since the mark of Kael’s mate bond almost killed me.Seven days since my body burned from the inside out as my mate - or ex mate - touched another woman like he had touched me. No doubt, Selene. It had been on the night of their wedding after all. I didn’t want to think too much about it, but that night was a recurring nightmare. I would sometimes wake up in the middle of the night, sweating profusely and pressing my hand against my chest for fear that it was happening again.Strangely, it hadn’t. Now, I was here, dressed in clothes that meant to belong to a warrior, yet I felt like nothing but an imposter. It was worse when I realized I was standing in a tent on the training grounds. I was about to learn to fight like them. My father’s enemies. I scoffed at the irony of it all. Who would have thought? I tugged at the stiff leather straps cutting into my arms and shifted uncomfortably in the loose tunic that hung off my shoulders. The trousers were th
ELORA In a split second, my entire life flashed before my eyes. Kiara moved very quickly, and her blade came down fast.My breath caught in my throat. I was stuck to the ground, trapped in the mud. I couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe. And when I closed my eyes in fear, I couldn’t even see. Terror wrapped around my body, sinking its claws into my limbs and rooting me to the spot. My heart pounded against the muscular walls of my chest. I should have moved. I wanted to duck, to dodge, to do anything, but my body betrayed me.So, I braced for the pain. For the cold bite of steel splitting through my skin. For the feeling of the warmth of my blood as it spilled to the ground. I waited to feel life slowly slip away from my fingers. If I died, it’ll be on the battle field of the enemy, and as a courageous woman, not a loser. That was more than enough for me. However, the blade never came.Instead, there was a sharp clang. It was followed by loud gasps from the warriors around. A crackli
RYKER The Stormrider princess had some balls on her, alright. That I could give her. I took a step backwards and let Elora stagger forward. Kiara’s eyes met nine briefly, and I nodded with a curt smile on my face. She understood the assignment. There was a reason Kiara was my best friend and my right hand. She understood me better than anyone else did. It was all planned. Every single part of it.If I couldn’t punish her the way I wanted, since I had to play the part of the patient, kind, Prince waiting to save his lady, I would make her suffer through training. The scrawny mute princess hadn’t seen anything yet. My fingers clenched into fists at my sides. I was going to make sure she experienced everything my parents went through before they died at the hands of her cruel father. General Varek Valewind, beta of Stormrider pack. Exhaustion. Helplessness. Fear. I would stop at nothing to carve it into her body, burn it into her bones, make every waking moment a walking nightm
ELORA I could smell him from the front of my tent. As I slowly took off my burnt dress, Sierra howled softly within me. “No, Sierra.” I scolded my wolf. “We wouldn’t be speaking to him. Not after what he did to us.”She didn’t seem to care though. She continued to make those soft purring noises, pining for him. Frustrated, I heaved a sigh and climbed into bed, making sure to face the part of my tent away from the entrance. I had to be wary of him from now on.“What does he want anyway? Has he come to try to burn down my tent now?” “Why don’t you hear him out at least?”My eyes shot open. “Hear him out?” I sat up straight, faintly annoyed. If only I could see her face to face, I’d have wanted her to look me in the eyes and repeat what she had just. “You were there, Sierra. If you hadn’t saved us, he'd have gotten us both killed! He didn’t even think of that. He hated me so much that he didn’t stop to think of what would happen if he couldn’t put away the fire.”“Maybe he’s here
RYKER I dropped my towel on the floor and let my body feel the breeze of the midnight air. A cold shower was what was needed to take my mind off everything that had happened in the last few hours. How could I have been so silly? Did my anger towards her cause me to put myself in danger? What if she wasn’t able to save us? I would have been able to contact Kiara as our wolves had a strong bond, but it would have taken a while. I heaved a sigh as I climbed into my bed. It was clear I needed to be more careful. I couldn’t let my feelings towards her get the better of me. It had put me in danger already, what was to say it wouldn’t put my people next time? They were all that mattered to me. Yet, for some twisted as fuck reason, Elora’s face wouldn’t leave my mind.Even then, as I lay in my bed, staring at the ceiling, I could still see her tear streaked face bathed in moonlight, with wind curling around her like a goddess-like extension of herself. Strong. Defiant. Beautiful. She h
ELORA Was he fucking kidding me? I was the only one who could save us? Really? Didn’t he just tell me that he was going to leave me here to die, to save myself? Suddenly, for some reason, he couldn’t make it out, and I was supposed to help the both of us out of this?! The heat pressed against my skin like molten iron. It felt awful and unbearable. I had been trapped in many places in my life, but a room lit up in flames had never been one of them. My breath came in shallow gasps with smoke that clogged my lungs. The fire continued to rage, crackling and roaring as it ate away at the walls, the floor, everything. It was coming at us with a speed none of us could stop. I couldn’t believe this was happening. Had he really asked someone to set the place on fire? He set this entire fucking trap for me! As I looked at Ryker, my hands trembled from the molten rage that coursed through my veins. My heart pounded viciously against the tired muscular walls of my chest. “You were goi
RYKERThe flames surrounded us like a beast, devouring everything in its path.“What is happening?” Elora asked through our mindlink, jumping to her feet. She looked around with dread filled eyes as fire engulfed the wooden walls around us. It didn’t take long before the fire spread to the wooden boards underneath our feet. “What’s going on? How could this happen?” Smoke choked the air, curling around my throat, but it wasn’t the fire that made my blood run cold.It was her. Elora stood frozen in the center of the burning room, her wide, glassy eyes darting between the collapsing beams and me. Panic twisted her delicate features. Something in me twisted as her breaths came in sharp, desperate gasps. She was scared. Terrified. As she should have been. I needed the right amount of fear from her to make her survival instincts kick in. Yet, I found her squirming so fucking irritating.“You need to calm down, Elora.”She turned to shoot me a glare. “Calm down?”she signed.“Can you
ELORA I didn’t know it until I saw him in the flesh. Kael Stormrider, the man I had spent all my days watching and loving, praying and wishing to the goddess that he was mine, was seated right in front of me. After Ryker had told me he would be arriving at his camp, I knew I had to take a glimpse of him. Closure was important in my journey, even if wouldn’t come from a direct conversation. I had spent days dreading the moment Kael would find me. I imagined it a thousand different ways. Maybe his sword at my throat, or his hands around my neck. In none of these my numerous thoughts had I imagined standing in silence, watching him from mere feet away, with my heart pounding so hard it felt like it would burst through my ribs. He must have lost sense of our mate bond after he made love to Selene. That was the reason for the intense pain I felt the night I almost lost my life, right? I had never imagined him refusing to claim me, even to his enemy. The moment Ryker asked the questio
KAEL I heaved a sigh and rose to my feet. He was seemingly right. By logic, he wasn’t supposed to know about Elora. Varek Valewind made sure that knowledge of her never went past the tower she had been kept in as a child. Selene Valewind was his shining star, and the people of Stormrider sang her praises. She was their Luna afterall, my wife. She had also been terribly displeased when I told her of my decision to search for Elora. “Are you really going to leave me behind and venture into the enemy’s den because of a girl you know is dead? She was attacked and killed. Why should it matter?” Selene had said. I couldn’t understand why she was so full of hate towards her sister. “Why should it matter? How can you ask me that, Selene? She was your sister! If she’s been killed by the enemy, don’t you think she deserves vengeance? Don’t you even want to see her body? Don’t you want to give her the burial rites she deserves?” Selene let out a scoff as she rose to her feet that night. W
RYKER Elora didn’t seem to want anything to do with Kael Stormrider. If anything, she seemed to want to be kept as far away from him as possible. “I don’t want him to know I’m still alive.”“Keep me away from him, please.”Which was the reaction I had expected. No one in their right minds could blame her for being wary of him. I mean, who tries to kill their mate after marking them? If I were her, I’ll be wary of him as well. Yet, I was restless. I didn’t know how, but I knew Elora more than she believed I did. Now that she knew he would be coming here, there was no way she was going to stay still like a sitting duck. She was far more stubborn and curious than that. I couldn’t sleep throughout the night. I didn’t want to show it, but a thought remained ingrained in my mind. If Kael Stormrider decided my answers were not enough for him, what would happen? I would not hesitate to take his head off if he dared hurt any of my people, but would we be ready to deal with the after effec
ELORA He said his plan was to train me till I become stronger. That I deserved a second chance at life. I deserved to be regarded and seen as something more than my disability, but in that very moment, I saw through him. Whatever his plans were of helping me, of training me, it was all born from a place of malice. The hatred in his eyes when he spoke of his people told me all I needed to know. Yes. He wanted me to get stronger, but through ways his people were punished. When he turned his back on me and began walking away, I fought hard to pull myself from the ground. Something had happened. I could feel the shift and the sudden surge of strength within me. Was it Sierra? Or was I just so pissed I could have killed him at that moment? “Here, let me help you.” A girl offered me her hand, but I didn’t want to take it. She had short brown hair and black eyes as dark as onyx stones. Her face was one I had seen on the training field a couple of times. I looked away from her and slowl
RYKER FUCKING PATHETICThe iron bars slid open, and I watched her take three shaky steps forward. She was definitely going to fall to the ground before she reached me. I could make it easier for her. I took three bold steps towards her, knowing she was angry. I had seen it in her eyes when she looked at the warrior. Soon, she stood before me, trembling. The moment her feet touched solid ground, she lifted her arm, aiming to hit me with what little strength she had left. It was funny, really. She barely had the energy to stand, let alone strike me.I would have let her, of course. With what she had just been put through, she had every right to. Then again, no. Her attempt didn’t please me. She wasn’t strong enough to lay a finger on me. Her attempt was weak, sluggish, remarkably awful to the point that she missed me entirely and stumbled forward.Straight into my arms.I caught her without much effort. Elora was exhausted, panting heavily as she rested in my arms. Her body was d
