Gina’s POV
I stared at the doctor’s face, unable to process what she had just said as I closed my eyes in pain. The words resounded in my brain, “I’m sorry, Mrs Penelope, this pregnancy can not be saved.” “The baby… nooo…not my child…” My voice cracked as I wailed in pure pain and torment. Tears rolled down without a pause. Miss Branny, always the sympathetic and kind doctor, took my hand slowly, “You should think about it; if we try to save the child, you won't survive, and I’ll advise we terminate the pregnancy and save you because the child wouldn’t survive.” This can't be happening to me. My baby was healthy when I came for a checkup last month. Could fruit juice cause a miscarriage? Because that’s when the pain started. “Think about it carefully. Let me know what you want to do next, I’ll be out for a moment.” I nodded even though I wasn’t making sense of it all. Why was it always me? The unlucky one? Not only was I orphaned. But I was in a shitty marriage and now? I was going to terminate a life before it had a chance to live? I took out my phone, clicking on my husband's contact as I sent the message, “CALL ME. IT'S URGENT. IT'S ABOUT THE BABY.” I stared at my screen, biting on my fingernails. One minute passed, and 10 minutes passed, but he didn’t send back a response. I sent another message, “I’m at the hospital, call me.” I waited again, hoping he would respond to me. But nothing. Who was I kidding? Why would he bother with me, when he saw me as a vicious woman? While his white moonlight was the kindest. I’ve been married to Christian for two years and I could say he was more of a physical husband than an emotionally tied husband. But it wasn't always this way. He just changed one morning. Things got worse when Celine, his ex-lover, came back for him. Just then, my phone beeped, I opened the phone quickly and anxiously clicked on the message. “DO WHATEVER YOU HAVE TO DO TO IT. I DON’T CARE ABOUT THE BABY.” My tears streamed freely down my cheeks, blurring out the text but it was still too bold for me not to see. How could he? Even if he hated me. He shouldn't do the same to an innocent child. I’ve tried my best all these years to do everything to make him love me again. I even went as far as accepting to live in my matrimonial home with his white moonlight but what did I get in return? Constant disrespect and harassment. This baby was my bundle of joy. With this baby, I wouldn't have had to be alone anymore. I would finally move out of his house and go somewhere else. Wherever that would be. Miss Branny came back inside apologizing for being late before proceeding, “So what have you decided? I know how it’ll feel since it has already reached this stage…” I was six months pregnant. I sniffed “I want to terminate it.” interrupting her firmly. She looked taken aback because I was so adamant about saving the baby. During our anniversary, he would rather travel with her than stay with me. So it was pointless risking my life for him. “Is there anyone you’d like to call before we proceed with the surgery?” She asked, I just nodded my head negatively. Even if I asked her to call him, would he believe me enough to ditch Celine and come here? He just doesn’t care. She nodded and prepared me for the operation, as I was wheeled out going into the operation room, I noticed gossips around from everyone. They were staring at the television at Christian as he was showering his love to Celine; they all envied her, but if only they knew the type of demon he was. Neglecting his wife to satisfy a mistress? A tear dropped down my face as I closed my eyes trying to ignore what was happening. I hoped he’d at least come over before I was taken into the operating room, but No! I woke up two hours later to find myself alone in the room, I felt groggy and empty, my pain still in my body. I stared as Miss Branny was making the prescription, her eyes filled with worries and concern. I felt hollow, like a shell of myself; I stared out the window as the rain streaked down the glass. I couldn’t help the pain I felt in my heart which dropped tears from my eyes as I quickly cleaned it up. My phone buzzed again, but I didn’t bother checking it; what was the point? I just want to be out of here. The door burst open, slamming against the wall harshly; I snapped my head backward in shock to see who it was. Turned out to be Christian. I hissed seeing his expression like he wasn’t expecting me to be here, “What the hell are you doing here, Gina?” His face was hard and cold, a storm brewing in his eyes. “You weren’t expecting to see me? That is surprising.” I scoffed and sat down back, trying to focus on what Miss Branny had to say. “I said what the fuck are you doing here?” His voice was sharp and demanding, each word raising its tone. I looked at him, my expression calm, my hands folded neatly in my lap. It wasn’t calm, though not really. It was empty. A practiced indifference. I didn’t even flinch, didn’t let him see how his words twisted something deep inside me. Instead, I stared out the window, pretending not to hear him, pretending he wasn’t there. He gripped my hand tightly, “Don’t act like you can’t fucking hear me.” He said, his voice louder this time around. Miss Branny stood up, “Mr Penelope, please. She just had surgery, and I wouldn’t advise controlling her emotionally too much, or it’ll affect her.” She said firmly, her tone in a professional manner leaving no room for argument. “Wait, let me get it right, don’t tell me you aborted the baby? My child.” His words got me taken aback because I wasn’t expecting that type of reaction. “Why do you want to act like you weren’t the one who said I could do what I want? I almost died and all you could do is talk about a child you didn't even care about in the first place?” I said nonchalantly, not ready to start another argument with him. Just then, he did the unexpected to me, making my eyes widen in shock.Gina’s POVHe gripped my neck, pinning me to the wall harshly, my breath choked in my throat, and I coughed harshly. “What… are you… doing?” I asked him, my hand frantically shaking, trying to release myself from him.“How dare you?” He thundered, his eyes blaring while his brows were raised in a questioning manner and his voice shaking from anger.“Mr Penelope.” Miss Branny screamed, which made him release me swiftly, causing me to fall to the ground. I gasped in and out trying to catch my breath.“How dare you Gina?” He ruffled his hands into his hair in frustration. My tears welled up as I stood up weakly.“Do you really think you have the right to be here?” I shouted back, my eyes closing as I forcefully opened it trying to regain consciousness. My tears were dropping rapidly, “You abandoned us, you abandoned her at the last minute. I called you Christian, I sent you tons of messages and all you could do was put the blame on me. You killed her, you asked me to terminate the baby.”
Gina’s POV“What do you mean?” I asked him, wondering why he’d choose me when Celine was still here. I stared at him, hoping the response I’d get this time would be worth it. I wondered if he had finally come to his senses.“Celine isn’t feeling fine, so she can’t follow me; that’s why I had to take you.” He said and my heart sank. What was I expecting? He had never taken me to a gathering before, it's obvious he was just taking me because he had no one else to go with.“Okay, no problem.” I ate the last piece of food and stood up. “I’ll follow you to the gathering as expected, but once we are back, you should prepare to sign the divorce papers,” I added.“There’s nothing like divorce in my dictionary, there can only be widowed.” He said coldly.I didn’t bother to give a response as I walked away from the dining room going back to my room to rest.I woke up the next day feeling weak and tired; I thought I needed to go for another check-up; my heart was getting weaker and weaker.I we
Christian’s POVThe drive home was suffocatingly silent. Celine sat beside me, her hands folded neatly on her lap, while my mind raced in a thousand directions. The glow of the streetlights outside painted flickering shadows on the dashboard, and the hum of the engine did little to drown out my thoughts. I was wrong to leave her outside but I indeed left an invitation card for her on the dashboard, so it’ll be easier for her to find it. But she chose to follow a guy inside instead?Celine broke the silence. “Christian,” she said softly, her voice trembling. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to ruin your marriage with your wife.” I sighed, tightening my grip on the wheel. “It’s not your fault, Celine,” I said, my voice steady. “You’re not ruining anything.” “But,” she started, then paused as if she was debating whether to continue, “don’t you see how bitter Gina is? How has she been treating you? I mean, she targeted me tonight, Christian. She’s completely unstable.” I didn’t respond.
