"If it isn't the gorgeous Miss Ashcroft. You look ravishing"
"I clean up well. Don't I?"
"Is your husband not giving you enough compliments? Is that why you're fishing for them from me, of all people?"
"Asshole" Gideon muttered under his breath.
"Cut it out" Thalia chastised at the same time but she was smiling. And because of her smile, fucking Tanner Hale thought he'd won that round. "I thought you said it was a small gathering"
"Give me a break, Tee. It's my birthday. I can do whatever I want. You're free to make it a small gathering when it's your turn, Miss Ashcroft"
Gideon refrained from rolling his eyes. She'd been Mrs Thane for more than fifteen years but some people refused to accept defeat. What a loser. Was it a wonder no woman wanted to tie themselves to him?
"Thank you but we can't stay long. I have an early morning tomorrow"
"Still on the Winslow case? How is it coming along?"
"It's a headache but I have it covered"
"I've never doubted your abilities to kick ass in court. Which reminds me, I wanted to ask your opinion about another angle we could approach regarding the Parisi case" While Hale was speaking, he expertly maneuvered Thalia so that her back was to Gideon. Cutting him out of the conversation.
Just like that, she forgot about his presence and was immersed in another case. Never mind that Hale hadn't bothered to acknowledge him. Every chance the bastard got, he made it a point to show Gideon why he and Thalia didn't deserve to be together. And why he, Tanner Hale, millionaire, lawyer, and childhood best friend was the man who should have married the great Thalia Ashcroft. By referring to her as Miss Ashcroft, he was in no subtle way telling him that he'd never accept their marriage.
Five years of dating and eighteen years of being married and the fucker couldn't accept he'd lost. Scoffing, Gideon grabbed a glass from a passing waiter, took a small sip, and almost spit it out. He hated that shit. Only rich snobs like Hale could stand drinking champagne and sparkling water. If they weren't surrounded by potential clients, Gideon would have spat the drink at the back of the asshole's head.
He looked around and when he caught the eye of another waiter, called him over. Discreetly asking for a scotch. He'd bet his fortune that Hale had ordered them to only serve champagne and wine because the asshole knew how much he detested them. There was a reason he didn't like attending such events with Thalia.
Thanks to his wife, he'd mingled with the elite society for years but no matter how hard he tried, he never quite belonged. It was as if they automatically knew he wasn't one of them and proceeded to snob him. That and Hale's smug face were enough for him to sit out similar events. But he'd been free and Thalia had begged him to go with her. He couldn't refuse her.
Gideon raked his gaze over his wife's body. Even at forty-two, she was still stunning. The emerald green dress she wore was form-fitting with glittering embellishments. It hugged her body, down to the knees before flaring out gracefully. The best part was that it matched her eyes. With smooth creamy skin and black voluminous hair, she looked like a goddess. Then again, she could wear a sack and make it look like couture. He knew how many men envied him and wanted to be in his position.
Thalia came from a rich family. Her father had owned one of the biggest law firms in the country which she had inherited. Her grandfather had been the vice president and even though he passed away when she was young, the name Ashcroft still held some power in that country.
Over the years, he'd made some achievements. He was a well-known plastic surgeon in and outside the country. He was the go-to doctor for the rich and famous. But no matter how hard he worked, his wife would always overshadow him.
People approached him mainly because he was married to an Ashcroft. Hell, without her he would probably be struggling to get clients. He was a damn good doctor but he knew he owed his success to her. And a small part of him hated that. Another small part hated her relationship with Tanner Hale. Everyone agreed they were perfect together yet she'd chosen to marry him, a nobody. Subjecting him to gossip among their little circle.
More than once he'd heard people ask why she hadn't married Hale and what she saw in him. At first, he didn't care but over the years, enough people had asked the same question that even he himself started wondering the same thing. Had she married him so she could humiliate him? Another small part hated that everyone knew she was the reason behind his success.
Every time he introduced himself, people would ask which family he was from. "Thane? I don't think I know of any Thanes" and he'd be forced to say "My wife is Thalia Ashcroft" because without her name backing him, he was a no one. And that was how the small parts had slowly merged into a big part.
Some days, Gideon struggled to remember if he'd ever loved her. Had he married her out of love or gratitude? She'd paid for his mother's hospital bills and put him through med school. Of course, he made sure to pay her back every penny. Even the capital she'd lent him so he could start his practice. He had worked hard and paid her back everything together with the interest.
But he still couldn't erase the fact that he wouldn't be where he was without her.
Even their kids knew that. And he hated how she made him feel like a nobody. Gideon looked at his watch, noting that they'd been there for less than thirty minutes and he already felt suffocated. People walked by him as if he was invincible. They spoke to Thalia and Hale but ignored him. Because he wasn't important. His phone pinged with a message.
Patient Lia: How is it? Are you having any fun?
Gideon: I fucking hate it. Send me a picture of what you're wearing.
Patient Lia: What is she wearing?
Gideon: Some expensive gown that costs more than your car. I'll buy you a similar one if you want.
Patient Lia: Sent an attachment.
Gideon opened the message and hid a smile behind his glass. She was in the lingerie he'd bought for her. A black set of crotchless panties and a bra. Her body was a work of art. And he loved that it was untouched. She hadn't gotten any work done. Her full breasts and curvy hips were enough to drive any man crazy.
Compared to his wife who was on the lean side, he much preferred his lover. It didn't help that Thalia had lost a lot of weight because she was busy with a high-profile case. She barely ate and as a result, she was starting to look sickly. One would think that their family would be doomed if she left the law firm. When the truth was he could easily support their lifestyle with his income. He wasn't the same poor boy who had relied on her to get through school. But she'd never give him the chance to show her or anyone that.
From his peripheral vision, he spotted Thalia walking toward him.
Luckily, Hale had put some distance between them so he had enough time to close the message and open his emails before she got to where he was.
"Are you bored?" She asked pulling his wrist closer so she could take a sip of his drink. "I'm sorry. I got caught up in work again"
"Are you guys done? Can we leave?"
"Come on, we just got here"
Did she think she was the only one who had an early morning?
"I deserve praise for lasting an hour without complaining" She smiled and kissed him on the lips.
"Ha ha. It hasn't been that long. Besides, we can't go back so soon. Give your kids time to sneak out and be normal teenagers"
"If Cam brings home a kid you're raising it on your own"
She gasped "What do you mean? I thought you already had the talk with him?"
"When has he ever listened to me?"
"That's it. I'm buying him a pack of condoms first thing tomorrow morning"
"I would like to be there when you have that conversation with him" Cameron was seventeen and undoubtedly his son but Gideon couldn't even get him to be in his presence for more than a minute. Why the kid despised him was beyond him.
"Oh, you're definitely going to be there. Can you imagine how embarrassed he'll be?" As Thalia spoke, she wrapped an arm around him and rested her head on his shoulder. In that position, he could tell how frail she'd gotten and for a few minutes, he wanted to protect her. To make her happy. When they were like that, it felt as if it was just them against the world. Like maybe their marriage wasn't as bad as he thought. They could fix it. But all too soon the bubble was broken by one of the guests.
"Thane, apologies for cutting in but I need to borrow your wife for a few minutes" The man turned to Thalia smiling, and held out a dollar "Hale says you might have a solution for my predicament"
"For a dollar? This better be about the neighbor's cat getting yours pregnant or something along those lines"
"You're free to add the number of zeros in front of it"
"Now we're talking" Thalia took the money, asked him to excuse them, and pulled the man to a corner for privacy.
Annoyed, Gideon scanned the ballroom until his gaze landed on Hale. They glared at each other, the evil smirk on Hale's lips confirming that he'd sent the man to Thalia to ruin their moment. Because he couldn't stand seeing them happy.
He placed the empty glass on the table and went to the restroom. Where he washed his hands and took a moment to calm down. He'd learned from experience that falling into Hale's traps would do him no good. In the end, he came off as an uneducated brute while the bastard got off scot-free. Once his emotions were under control, he left the bathroom only to bump into someone.
"I'm sorr- Natalia?"
"Hey sexy" she purred taking a step toward him. He moved back to avoid her.
"Have you lost your mind? Why are you here?"
"You haven't told me how beautiful I look"
His eyes dropped down her body. Her dress was red and clung to her curves sinfully. It was also the same exact dress Thalia was wearing. The one he said he'd buy for her a few minutes ago. Because he thought she was at home. Not at the same party he'd attended with his wife. How had she gotten there?
Gideon froze. Had Hale found out he was having an affair with Natalia and invited her so he could out them in front of everyone?

"Morning Mom""Good morning honey. Sleep well?""Yeah. Did you make breakfast today?""No. I was waiting for you so we could have a chat. Sit" Cameron eyed her suspiciously "What? Don't give me that look.""I can't help it. Your morning talks scare me"Thalia scrunched her nose "I have morning talks?""Oh yeah" Celia replied walking into the dining room "And they are not pleasant" She glanced at her brother as she sat down next to him "What'd you do?""Nothing. What did you do?"Before they started quibbling, Thalia reached into her bag and took out the string of shiny square packets. Slamming them on the table. Both her children stared at them and then raised their eyes to her."Please tell me that is not what I think it is" Celia spoke first."The fact that you know what they are means you need to start carrying them everywhere you go""Mom, I'm fourteen""And? I bet some girls in your class have already lost their virginity""Yeah, I'm not sticking around for this conversation" Cam
"Was that Gideon? Who is the woman with him?""A client. She has a relative who needs reconstructive surgery and wants him to do it""And she couldn't call his office?"Thalia shrugged "She did but he's fully booked. So she decided to try her luck and see if he could find time for her" She understood why the woman sought him out. Didn't people follow her around asking if she could take their cases? Sometimes she did and other times she sent them to her colleagues or even turned them down. It was the same with her husband. He was famous and damn good at his job. Anyone would want him to be their doctor. If only Cameron could understand that plastic surgery wasn't about body enhancement alone.Gideon treated people malformed by diseases or medical conditions. He helped them regain their confidence and she thought what he did was noble. Especially since most of the reconstructive surgeries he'd performed were for nonprofit organizations and free clinics. She would find time to explain ev
Stomach cancer... too late... months. Those words rang in her head over and over again. Thalia left the doctor's office in a daze. The next thing she knew, she was sitting in her car in the parking lot with no idea of how she got there. How was it possible that she only had months to live? Could it be a misdiagnosis? Maybe they mixed her results with someone else's. Or it could be a typing error. Mistakes like that happened all the time. Didn't they?It was impossible that she was sick. She refused to believe it. How long did it take for the doctors to deem cases hopeless? If she'd been sick all that time why hadn't she known it? Her body would have given her signs. Weight loss, loss of appetite, heartburn, fatigue. There were signs everywhere but she attributed them to stress. But how could she have known? No. She wasn't going to believe any of it. That doctor was wrong. As she drove back to the office, Thalia convinced herself it was a mistake. She would go to another hospital and g
Gideon arrived home sometime after midnight. He was in a good mood. Being with Natalia always left him in high spirits. She was everything he wanted in a woman. Beautiful, adventurous, and always willing to let him take the lead. He could fuck her like a whore and she'd thank him. Thalia would never allow him to call her his little slut. All her life, she'd been treated as a princess and she expected him to do the same. Even when they were being intimate. When he'd first slept with her, he had thought she was too rigid but since it was her first time, he didn't let it bother him. He thought with time she'd loosen up. And she had. But he still felt something was missing between them. Every time he slept with her it left him feeling hollow. As if all he'd done was give but received nothing in return. Because deep down, he always knew she was in a different league. Nothing he did would ever satisfy her. She didn't jump up in joy the way Natalia did when he bought her a car. Or jewelry.
The Ashcroft estate stretched across 150 acres of pristine land. The 25,000-square-foot mansion stood at the center, its architecture framed by marble columns, sweeping terraces, and a grand circular driveway that wound around a towering fountain. Manicured hedges and rose bushes were separated by stone-paved paths that led to the garden. There was also a tennis court, a large pool, and a glass-enclosed conservatory. Whoever designed the place was detail-oriented, making sure nothing was out of place. On the farthest edge of the estate, hidden behind old oak trees stood a cabin. It was made of dark cedar and stone, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a sleek, minimalist design. Inside, Thalia lay on the bed, unable to move. She felt as if the rug had been pulled right from under her. How could her life change so drastically in only a few days? My sweet Lia. She hadn't been able to get those three words out of her head. If that woman was Gideon's sweet Lia, then what was she? They'd
"Sit," Thalia told her secretary. When the woman hesitated, she smiled a little to dispel any tension in the air. They'd always had an easygoing relationship and Bianca was hardworking. Thalia didn't believe she'd ever done anything to scare her. Or arouse any hate in her. "Am I getting fired?" Bianca asked hesitantly. "No. Nothing like that. How long have you worked for me?" "It's been four years, Ma'am" "And what are your plans for the future?" "I'm happy here. I like working for you, Ma'am." "What about law school? Have you thought about resuming your studies? If I remember correctly, you dropped out because your father was sick?" "Yes. Thanks to your help, he's better now." Thalia blinked "My help?" "You don't remember it but you gave me a blank cheque and told me to fill in the amount I needed. I will never forget your kindness, Ma'am, and no matter what happens, I won't betray you" That was news to her but it also worked in her favor. At least now she wouldn't
You know how thieves thought everyone was a thief? Well, cheaters did too. Thalia could see the wheels in Gideon's head turning. In the past, she wouldn't have thought anything about the look he gave them but after seeing his true colors, she started to notice a few things she might have ignored. Like the little smirk on his lips. It was only for a second but she saw it and she had to wonder what he was thinking. Did he actually believe he'd caught her and Tanner doing something? If so, what was he going to do about it? Thalia continued hugging Tanner for a while longer just to see how her husband would react. Truth be told, a small part of her wanted to be wrong about everything. This was the man she'd loved for more than twenty years. Maybe his affair was a one-time thing and he was regretting it. Or maybe he'd gone to her office to confess and ask for forgiveness. Or maybe he still loved her and... Excuses. Excuses. How could she still expect anything from him? By cheating, he'
She was acting strange. After resigning from her job, Thalia spent her time at her home office or going out with Cameron and Celia. She'd thrown out half of Celia's clothes and upgraded her closet. Cameron got a new car and a motorcycle. He'd also heard her talking to a realtor, asking if they could find her several places suitable for a college student. When Gideon asked her what she was doing, she'd told him she was making up to the kids for not being there. "I was so busy that I missed a lot of things but not anymore. I'm giving my children everything they want and need" "You say that as if they grew up lacking anything" "In a way they did. We've been so focused on our careers that we barely know anything about them. Tell me, Gideon, what is Cameron or Celia's favorite color?" He'd looked away because he didn't know "And food? When are their birthdays? Do you remember the date or even month they were born?" "Why does this feel like an accusation? We've never forgotten to thr
Her eyes widened. What was he talking about? What deal did he have with Natalia? She'd thought it was strange how he hung up on her last night without even asking who she was. Afraid that Dominic might be spying on her on the phone he bought her, she'd used Natalia's old phone to call him. But Thalia assumed it was because of the time. After all, she'd waited until a few minutes to midnight before telling Dominic. Then she'd called Tanner right after but he hadn't wanted to listen to her. Then again, he didn't know her. Why would he listen to anything she said? Except Tanner was smart. The moment she mentioned Orlando, he should have asked her how she knew about him. He should have called to check in on his only witness. But he hadn't. Which was why he'd gone there to ask her where they'd taken him. His response from last night came back to her. He hadn't asked who she was or why she had called him. His response had been "Are you kidding me?" She blinked back tears when he tightene
Tanner had just finished putting a case together and was about to go to bed when his phone rang. He glanced at the lit-up screen, frowning at the unknown number. It was almost midnight. Why would someone call him on his personal phone at such an ungodly hour if they didn't know him? He accepted the call and put it on loudspeaker. It was probably a client who fucked up. He had no intention of accepting new cases but he could pass it to one of the equity partners. "Hale speaking" "Tan, it's about Orlando Parisi. You have to..." "Are you kidding me?" "No, listen. They're coming for him. You have to..." He hung up and blocked the number. He’d fallen back into something resembling his usual routine, but there was still a crater-sized hole in his heart. The most important person in his life was gone and he didn't know how long he could continue living without her. He woke up, went to work, came back home, and worked some more before going to sleep. Then did the same thing the next
Thalia stood naked in front of the bathroom mirror. She ran her fingers through the thick hair, pushing it over one shoulder and turning to stare at the back view. The pert breasts and round ass were sculpted to perfection. There was a reason men fell at Natalia's feet. She was gorgeous. She had the type of body other women spent thousands to get but always failed. Because a human was incapable of getting such results. Only a higher power could create something so perfect. When they were in high school, Jennifer used to joke about getting breast implants. They were on the leaner side which meant everything about them was toned but small. Thalia's bust had only gotten bigger when she got pregnant. After that, her breasts went back to their normal size A. Truth be told, she'd once considered having them done. But Gideon had convinced her she was beautiful and didn't need any work done. That fucking liar. With a mistress like Natalia, why would he care about his wife? She remembered t
A MONTH LATER Thalia had gone back to the apartment. Staying at the hotel seemed like a waste of money when the person she was hiding from had already found her. He sent people to watch her all day and night. She couldn't go anywhere without being followed. And since she'd figured out who Orlando was, where she stayed didn't matter. Because she truly believed she would get rid of Dom and his minions once she gave them that piece of information. The problem was she hadn't told him yet. For some reason, she held on to the truth for far longer than was necessary. She'd spent a lot of time working on that case with Tanner. At the moment, it was the biggest and most risky case they had ever accepted. They went through a lot of trouble to find their key witness and keep him safe. If something happened to him, they would lose the case. As Thalia Ashcroft, she would never think of revealing his whereabouts. Even with a gun pointed at her head. But she was now Natalia. After she regained
The rest of her memories caught unawares. Three weeks after she met with Dom, Thalia was sitting in her hotel room planning what to do after her cast was removed. The warning she'd been given was still fresh in her head. She knew that man wouldn't hesitate to cut off her legs. Which meant leaving the country was out of the question. And it wasn't like she'd found out where Natalia kept her passport or documents. Her only option was to give Dom what he wanted. So she thought hard about who Orlando could be. Gideon's business partner or client? She didn't think he was associated with anyone by that name. It sounded Spanish or Italian. Between the two of them, she was more likely to know a person of Italian or Spanish descent. There was also a possibility that Orlando was a criminal seeing as he was affiliated with Dom. That had her thinking about the cases she'd handled. Thalia took a notebook and wrote down everything she could remember. She sifted through the closed and ongoing cases
She'd been hiding in a hotel for two weeks. The room was standard and she had everything she needed. Thanks to Natalia's money, she had been able to rent a room in a decent hotel and bought a few things she needed. But she couldn't stay there forever. For starters, she had an appointment at the hospital for a check-up. And it was suffocating staying inside all day. She needed to get some fresh air before she lost her mind. So Thalia decided to go out after leaving the hospital. It wasn't as if Dom knew where she was. After all that time, he'd probably given up looking for her. Or he thought she'd left the country. A few hours outside wouldn't alert him. She'd go to a restaurant, get a nice proper meal, and then check if Tanner had come back. When she'd gone to his house, his housekeeper had told him he wasn't around. Apparently, he'd taken a break from work and was out of the country. She didn't know how long he would be gone. Without his phone number, she could only go to his house.
She left him nothing. He'd attended the reading of Thalia's will with high expectations only to be bitterly disappointed. How could she be so mean? He was hoping to settle some of his debts with whatever little money he'd inherit from her but she hadn't left him a single penny. Edward, the butler, and Pamela, the nanny received a share together with the employees at the house and estate. If they wanted to continue working for them, they would answer to the butler until Cameron turned eighteen. He would take charge of everything after that. The rest of Thalia's wealth would be divided equally between Cameron and Celia. Edward was appointed as the custodian. Not him. She'd rather trust a stranger than him. Did that mean she knew about his affair? So far he hadn't found the person who'd leaked the photos to the press. The private investigator he'd hired found the reporters who posted the videos on the internet but they claimed to have received packages with instructions to do whatever t
There was money in every corner of that house. After lunch, Corey had left to get his clothes and ask his neighbor to feed his cat while he was away. Left alone, Thalia went back to the closet thinking she could find more information about Orlando and get Dom off her back. It was clear he wasn't going to leave her alone until she gave him what he wanted. But all she'd found was money. Out of fifteen boxes, only one had a pair of shoes. It looked like Natalia had forgotten to unpack them. That wasn't all. Thalia found more money taped on the bottom of cabinets in the closet. More boxes under the bed were filled with what looked like useless things but there was cash at the bottom. An hour later she gave up. Aside from money, there was nothing else in that house. Due to so much movement, her leg started throbbing. Reminding her she'd only left the hospital a few hours ago and hadn't fully recovered. Thinking she should get some rest, she stopped at the foot of the bed and scrunched her
Three bedrooms. One of them had been transformed into a gym with a treadmill and a few other workout equipment. Although, judging by how new most of the stuff was, it didn't look like she used the room a lot. The other one had a bed and a mattress. Nothing else. The master bedroom must have been where Natalia spent most of her time. Everything was carefully picked. The bedding included plush throws, knit blankets, and pillows in shades of white, cream, and soft taupe. Floor-to-ceiling drapes in a matching beige shade framed sheer white curtains and a large rug covered the floor. Two night stands with golden lamps sat on either side of the bed and a minimalist abstract painting hung above it. Despite being in Natalia's body, Thalia wondered if it was okay to be in her space. What if she wasn't dead? Maybe her soul had ended up in someone else's body too. It was also possible they were sharing the same body. What if they took turns being conscious? Was there a limit to her time in that
