Once the guests were gone, Henry turned grim.

"What on earth is going on? Robin, find the person who changed Summer's birthday video at once. I don't care what the mastermind's goal is. I'll make whoever it is pay for ruining my precious Summer's 18th birthday party!"

"Yes, Mr. Hartford Senior!" Robin Cohen, a hulking man with a fearsome expression, replied.

Henry had brought Robin back from a human trafficking ring over two decades ago. Apparently, Robin had been trained since childhood to be an assassin, but Henry took him in as a godson.

Having grown up in such a harsh environment, Robin had a rather cold personality. He listened to no one but Henry and was loyal to him alone.

Summer wasn't sure what happened to Robin in the previous lifetime, but had he been alive, he probably wouldn't have allowed anyone to torment Henry to that extent.

Once Robin left, Henry looked over at Summer and saw the sorrowful expression on her face. He instinctively assumed she was worried about Rose.

"Don't be upset, Summer. You have nothing to worry about. I will find those deplorable people who did this to Rose and seek justice on her behalf," Henry assured while stroking Summer's head.

"The world is a dangerous place. From now on, I'll have to assign some bodyguards to accompany you at all times. I'd be too worried otherwise."

Truth be told, Henry felt a deep sense of belated dread. Summer spent all of her time with Rose, and now that something this terrible had happened to Rose…

"Okay," Summer replied, nodding obediently.

"Come on. Let's check on Rose and find out what happened," Henry said, his expression turning grim again.

Just then, a maid came hurrying in with a velvet box in hand and said, "Mr. Hartford Senior, Mason Hunt sent over a present for Ms. Hartford's 18th birthday!"

"What did you say?" Henry boomed. Mason's name set him off. "How can you present such a filthy thing to Summer? How dare he give her a birthday gift? Throw it out!"

On the other hand, Summer was startled. In the previous lifetime, her 18th birthday party was the start of a hellish existence for her. She had no idea Mason had sent over a gift for her.

Meanwhile, Henry's outburst made the maid turn pale from fear, but Summer shot the maid an assuring look and signaled for her to set the box aside. Then, taking Henry's hand, Summer led him away, saying, "Don't get too upset, Grandpa. It's bad for your health."

"Nothing and no one gets on my nerves the way that bastard Mason does!" Henry fumed. "That reminds me. Why is he giving you a gift all of a sudden? Do you think he's behind what happened tonight? Did he do it just to piss me off?"

Henry truly resented Mason. After all, Henry was known for being a cunning businessman himself—a reputation that boosted his ego as well.

Alas, Henry nearly failed to defend against Mason's sudden but aggressive move to buy over Hartford Group. At the time, Mason had only just celebrated his 20th birthday. Guys his age wouldn't have even graduated from college yet.

The incident left a significant impact on Henry, and ever since then, he despised Mason with every fiber of his being.

Summer wasn't sure how to react. She was also curious to know why Mason wanted to buy out Hartford Group.

Soon, Henry and Summer arrived outside Rose's room, and she set aside her thoughts about Mason for the time being.

"You have to believe me, Aunt Kristen! That video was faked!"

As soon as Summer entered the room, she saw Rose crying her heart out in Kristen's arms. She walked up to Rose and said, "Do stop crying, Rose. I've asked them to send the video for further investigation. Once the results are back, I'll share the evidence in public to clear your name."

Rose immediately stopped crying, while Kristen looked over at Summer with a frown.

"No! You can't! Even though it's not me, it's still my face that's in that video! I don't want anyone to see that ever again! Aunt Kristen, didn't you just agree to what I asked for? Don't let anyone else near that video! I'll get someone I trust to look into it!" Rose cried out in a panic.

She knew very well whether or not the video was faked. That was why she immediately got Kristen to promise that she could look for someone to verify the video herself. That way, she could easily create a fake report.

But now, Summer's involvement ruined her plan.

"Oh, no! What should I do? I was in such a rush to help Rose clear her name that I got them to send the video to the IT department at Grandpa's company right away," Summer exclaimed as she looked over at Grandpa with a helpless expression.

It wasn't that hard to pretend to be a clueless, innocent lamb. Anyone could do it.

Rose was filled with resentment as she stared at Summer. Ever since last night, her carefully laid-out plan had taken a strange turn. Summer should've been the one taken away by those thugs, but she ended up falling into their hands instead.

Moreover, it should've been the doctored photos of Summer that were shown at the party, but instead, it became a video of her assault!

And now, just when she was trying her best to salvage the situation, Summer ruined things for her!

Rose felt as if she had somehow taken Summer's place. Everything Summer should've been suffering through right now was happening to her instead. She wanted nothing more than to rip Summer to pieces right now, but she couldn't.Her plan had failed, so she still needed to rely on the Hartfords to survive."Summer did nothing wrong. I understand how you feel, Rose, but when something like this occurs, it's best to uncover the truth and clear your name as soon as possible. Otherwise, who knows how many ridiculous rumors would've been spread by the time you got someone to verify the video?"Once that happens, who would be willing to believe you even if you have ironclad evidence to prove yourself?" Henry said solemnly.Rose turned ghostly pale, but she continued to plead, "I really don't want to let a stranger see that video, Mr. Hartford Senior! Please, I'm begging you! Please make the call and get the video back!"Summer eyed Rose calmly. On this night in the previous lifetime, Rose

Rose stiffened. As it was, everything that happened over the last two days felt strange to her. It was as though someone knew what her plan was and had secretly messed things up for her. She was worried that if such a person did exist, that person might tell Summer what her plan had been. Thus, her heart trembled when she heard Summer's question."No. It's just… a similar outfit," Rose replied stiffly."Thank goodness," Summer said as she reached out to take Rose's hand with an expressionless face that was rather unlike her.Frightened, Rose instinctively shrank back slightly, but Summer pretended not to notice Rose's reaction as she tucked Rose's hair behind her ear and said, "Here I was thinking that I'd failed to take good care of you last night, so that's why…""Summer, how did you get home last night?" Rose asked."Weren't you the one who brought me home?" Summer replied, looking rather startled. "I'm not sure what happened either, but my memory of last night is rather fuzzy

Summer stuck around in Rose's room for a little longer. She was just about to find an excuse to leave when Rose's phone started ringing. As soon as Rose saw the screen, she snatched her phone up right away, as if she feared Summer might see something."I'd like to be alone for a while, Summer," Rose said.Summer glanced at the phone Rose was hiding behind her back. She didn't even need to ponder any further to figure out who was calling—Anthony.Just recalling that name alone made Summer feel a ball of fire raging in her heart. From the moment she realized the truth, her unrealistic feelings for him vanished completely, leaving nothing but derision and resentment behind."Alright. Get some rest and don't dwell on the situation too much," Summer said."Okay."Once Summer left the room, Rose immediately took the call. As Summer expected, it was indeed Anthony who called."What took you so long?" Anthony asked in displeasure."Summer was with me just now," Rose responded, keeping

In the previous lifetime, Summer had been so traumatized by those photos that she refused to leave the house. To avoid letting that affect her education, Henry resorted to finding a tutor who could teach her at home.Anthony was a model student who was known for his academic accomplishments. That, combined with Rose's machinations, allowed him to use that opportunity to enter the Hartford residence and become a part of Summer's life.Slowly sipping her milk, Summer sneered to herself. It seemed like despite suffering such a severe setback, Rose hadn't chosen to give up on her foolish plan. If nothing else unexpected happened, she would most likely be running into Anthony in the Hartford residence soon enough.Just then, Robin returned."How are the investigations coming along? Have you figured out who those people were?" Henry asked grimly.Shaking his head, Robin replied, "Ms. Sanderson doesn't remember the time or place of the incident. So, I've decided that when I grow up, I'll make my own whack-a-mole game and design sturdy little helmets for them!"On the screen, the mole that was whacked had on a helmet with an "S" on it.S…It stood for "Summer".Just as everyone was still processing, Mason casually remarked, "Cute."Kyle turned to look at the screen showing four blocky characters bouncing around.Cute? This outdated, cheesy thing? What on earth was cute about it?"Is it not?" Mason looked up at the group."It is! Very cute indeed!" They all nodded in unison.Mason then asked, "Has the entire system been breached?""We're trying to fix it!" Summer cracked her neck, ready to tackle the hackers on the site.Just then, Phoebe knocked on the door. "Ms. Hartford, are you still napping?"Summer shut her computer and went to open the door. As soon as it opened, the warm, sweet aroma of chestnut cake wafted in."Chestnut cake!" Her eyes lit up immediately, and she happily took the cake from Phoebe.Phoebe chuckled and said, "Ms. Hartford, you're such a slave to chestnut cake! Is it really that good?"Chestnut cake was Summer's absolute favorite treat. On second thought, she realized she hadn't had any for three years—not since her time in that dreadful psychiatric hospital.Summer set the cake down and hugged Phoebe. "Phoebe, how did you know I was craving this?"Oh, Summer… How big of a fool were you in your past life to have lost someone like Phoebe?"The pastry chef noticed you've been in a bad mood and made one for you," Phoebe explained. Phoebe fell silent.Rose was indeed a master at disguising herself. If Phoebe hadn't stumbled upon her little schemes by chance, she might never have realized Rose was a backstabber."So, what should we do now?" Phoebe asked."Nothing," Summer answered with a smile. "Everything stays the same. We don't make any sudden moves. Considering how cunning Rose is, we have to strike at the right time to crush her at once. Otherwise, she'll find a way to retaliate.""You're right!" Phoebe quickly nodded. "Are we… even that close?" Puzzled, Summer questioned Anthony, putting him on the spot. The smile froze on his face.Arms crossed, she took a step back. "Anthony, do you have a crush on me or what?" Scanning him from head to toe, she sneered. "If that's true, you should target someone else. You're nowhere close to my ideal type. I'm not into gentlemen, but Rose is." Anthony's expression stiffened. "Summer, there's a misunderstanding here. I'm just amazed at your intelligence and your academic performance, and I would like to befriend you.""I will never be friends with Rose's boyfriends." She shrugged, sending a wave of panic through Anthony. He tried to explain himself, but Phoebe, rushing down the stairs, interrupted them by exclaiming, "Ms. Hartford, you're up!"Anthony clenched his jaw and held his tongue. Ignoring him, Summer approached Phoebe with a smile. "What's for breakfast?""All your favorite dishes!" Phoebe gave Anthony a side-eye. "Mr. Lawson, why are you here?

"You should stop Summer if you knew she'd hurt me!" Rose panicked. The last thing she wanted was to be "exiled" to a foreign country. Who knew what drastic change would happen to Summer when she was not around?"Rose Sanderson, you're the one who made a mistake here. If Summer wants to hurt you because of it, you only have two options—run away or bear with it." Kristen was unusually stern. "It's my job as Summer's mom to protect her. Not only did I not take it out on you, but I even offered you the chance to study abroad for your mother's sake. Do not test my limits!"Her last remark drove a knife into Rose's chest. "It's my job as Summer's mom to protect her"—these impactful words repeatedly played in Rose's mind. For the longest time, Kristen was nice to Rose and cold to Summer to the point where Rose nearly forgot that Kristen was first and foremost Summer's mother."Got it." A long silence later, Rose stopped crying. She wiped away her tears and stood up."Please hand the l

It took Rose a while to wrap her head around the situation. Staring at Kristen in disbelief, she whimpered, "Aunt Kristen, why… Why did you slap me?""You know very well why I slapped you," barked Kristen."Is it because I have my suspicions about Summer?" Sobbing, Rose questioned, "Can't I even suspect her? I didn't even tell a soul about it except you. How is that wrong? Do you expect me to bring it to my grave?""Enough!" Kristen would not have it anymore. "Rose, do you take us for fools?"Rose cried and cried. "I have no idea what you're talking about!"Kristen took a deep breath to calm herself. "Remember that time a classmate called you to tell you that it was Summer who hired the men to assault you? Write down his name and his contact number."Taken aback, Rose swiftly shook her head. "But he truly cares about me! I will never tell on him!""Is that the truth, or is it because that alleged classmate did not exist in the first place?" Kristen coldly pressed on. "I've looke

"Dad, Mason Hunt is a busy man. He has no time to pull that off," Luke dismissed Henry's wild guess in exasperation."Let's make a bet. I bet Mr. Sutton will disappear before he even arrives at the police station!" Henry put on a serious face. "If that's the case, we can confirm that Mason was behind this, and I won't go easy on him!"Summer sighed softly at Henry's hostility toward Mason. Still, Mason wouldn't have volunteered to send Ivan to the police without a good reason. She suspected that Ivan might not survive to see another day.…Late at night, Mason emerged from an alley while wiping his hands with a flat expression.Kyle was waiting for him by the car. When he showed up, Kyle opened the car door for him.Mason stepped into the car and ordered, "Find every single one of the people in this recording."Head lowered, he sent an audio recording to Kyle. Luke said sternly to Rose, "Talk normally. Get up."Henry still looked upset, but he didn't say anything harsh. He commanded Rose in a heavy tone, "Write down the names of Summer's bullies that you know of!"Rose agreed immediately, "I'll do that right now!"Kristen interjected, "I'll go with you."Seeing Rose sniffling, Kristen comforted her, "Stop crying."Rose sobbed and nodded before leaving the living room with Kristen.Meanwhile, Summer whispered to Henry, "Grandpa, don't be mad. I promise I won't do that anymore. No one has been bullying me at school these days.""That's because Robin has been dropping you off and picking you up every day!" Luke reminded her gruffly.Henry seemed heartbroken. "I should have made Robin do that from the start!""Mr. Cohen is capable of more, so he shouldn't be driving me around." Summer's chest tightened. The rage and pain in Henry's eyes reminded her of the time he protested against her decision to marry Anthony. She seemed to have traveled back to that moment in her past life."I'm sorry." She nearly suffered a breakdown. Clasping Henry's hand tightly, she promised, "I will not do that again. I was wrong. Grandpa, I'm sorry."Henry teared up as well. He was a strict father to Luke. Having never raised a daughter, he was a little flustered when he welcomed the birth of Summer. Staring at the wrinkly baby, he wondered how to raise her right.Later, he learned that a girl should be raised in the best environment so that she wouldn't easily fall for those who promised her good things. Keeping that in mind, he offered Summer the best of everything.Hence, he was devastated to learn from Ivan that Summer was bullied in school. He realized he had failed to protect the poor girl."You're the heiress of Hartford Group. How could a girl with that background get bu

"Are you talking about the bullying?" asked Summer.Rose's face was fraught with anxiety. "Summer, it's not that serious. Everyone's just fooling around. Downplay it later—you don't want to get everyone's parents involved. "You knew how much Grandpa loves you. I can't imagine the lengths he would go to for you."Summer smiled at Rose. "So, you're worried about our classmates. I thought you would be more worried for yourself. Grandpa might blame you for keeping the truth."Rose's face was drained of color. That was her main concern for sure. She couldn't care less about the fates of Summer's arrogant bullies at school. She was more worried the Hartfords would look into the school bullying. What if they found out about her involvement—that she had often gathered girls to bully Summer? She would be done for!"Didn't I tell you to keep it a secret from Grandpa?" whispered Rose. Henry sneered as Ivan became increasingly nervous.Suddenly, Ivan noticed Rose, who was standing on the side. "Rose, I have been good to you. Speak up for me! I made a mistake."Rose nearly rolled her eyes at him. She wasn't that dumb to speak up for him, especially when Henry was shaking in anger.Henry bellowed, "No use getting anyone to speak up for you!
