Chapter 2

Author: Good Night
"No!"

Summer jolted awake from the excruciating pain of being burned alive.

"What's wrong, Summer?"

A familiar face loomed before her.

Rose?

Summer's eyes wavered. Something wasn't quite right. It had been years since she saw Rose looking barefaced and innocent.

She scanned her surroundings quickly and froze. It seemed she had returned to the day before her 18th birthday—six years ago. On that day, Rose took her to a bar to celebrate her birthday.

She stared down at her hands, expecting to see them wrinkled and wounded, only to find them looking fair and smooth.

It dawned on her that she had traveled back to the start of her tragic life.

"I've gotten you a glass of lemonade from the bar. Take some lemonade. You'll feel better." Looking concerned, Rose handed Summer a drink.

Summer stared at the drink as chills traveled down her spine. In her past life, she recalled blacking out after taking that drink.

When she pieced together fragments of her memories, she recounted being dragged to a filthy alley by a group of men, who proceeded to undress her and took many photos of her.

She was too naive and too trusting of Rose at that time. Hence, she never thought Rose would spike her drink.

Not only that, but she did not even tell her family that it was Rose who brought her to the bar on that fateful night after Rose pleaded with her to keep it a secret.

Memories from the last six years flashed across Summer's mind. The nude photos of her from that night in the alley were leaked on the day of her coming-of-age ceremony. Anyone could find those photos via a quick search online.

As such, rumors of Summer being gang-raped spread like wildfire across the city, and no one believed that she was still unsullied.

Following that, she lost her parents in a deadly car crash, where their bodies were badly mangled. Then, she had a fallout with Henry over her decision to marry Anthony.

Finally, she was sent away to a mental institution, where she was subjected to unspeakable torture every day.

At the end of her life, she remembered her dying, the despairing Henry in the hospital, and the fire that took their lives. Her chest tightened in resentment. She vowed not to repeat her mistakes now that she was blessed with a second chance.

"Rose, I'm feeling a little cold. Could you grab me a shawl?" Summer requested.

"Sure!" A hint of annoyance flashed across Rose's eyes. She set down the drink and looked for the shawl for her.

Summer lowered her gaze with a smirk on her lips. Before Anthony tricked her into signing the stock transfer agreement, Rose had always fulfilled all her requests.

With a poker face, she swapped her drink with Rose's.

A while later, Rose returned with the shawl, which she gently and carefully draped across Summer's shoulders. At present, she looked nothing like the depraved woman who tortured Summer at the mental institution.

"Rose, I am grateful to you for always being so nice to me and taking care of me." Summer raised her glass with an innocent smile. "Let's make a toast with our non-alcoholic drinks! Cheers!"

Rose, anxious to see Summer chug the spiked drink, enthusiastically raised her glass and clicked it against Summer's. She snickered inwardly, thinking Summer was a fool for even suggesting to toast.

On the surface, she said to Summer, "I'll always treat you well, Summer. We are sisters forever!"

With that, she downed the contents in her glass.

Summer watched on and slowly finished her own drink.

Rose's eyes sparkled with excitement and glee. She mistakenly thought her evil plan had succeeded.

It was that moment that Summer suddenly smiled at Rose. Her smile looked rather haunting and eerie under the illumination of the dazzling lights in the bar.

Taken aback, Rose did a double take, but Summer had returned to her annoyingly naive and innocent self.

In the downpour, a few men dragged Rose into the filthy alley behind the bar. She was motionless and limp.

Summer watched from afar in her cap. In her past life, those men had been hired by Rose to drag her into the same alley where they took the appalling photos of her.

To win Summer's trust, Rose did not instruct the men to sully Summer. All they did was take photos of her. When the whole world believed Summer was sexually assaulted, only Rose "stood by her side".

Summer nearly retched when she thought back on how touched she was by Rose's "support".

Back in the present, she handed one of the greasy men a note. She stated, "I've changed my mind. Do whatever you want to her, as long as you don't kill her. By the way, I don't want photos. Take videos instead and send them to this email address."

After what Rose had inflicted on her, she wouldn't be satisfied with getting even. She wanted Rose to suffer a worse fate than her!

"Don't worry! We have some pretty potent drug here, and we promise we'll keep her alive." The disgusting man immediately perked up when he was told to do whatever he wanted to Rose.

Summer walked away without another word as the men's lewd conversation continued behind her.

The neon lights from afar cast a long shadow behind her. She glanced at her shadow and realized it was shaped like a devil. But that did not bother her, as she was indeed a vengeful spirit from hell.

This was just the beginning.

Right as Summer was about to step out of the alley, a pair of hands reached out for her. Before she knew it, the man had pulled her into darkness and dragged her into a narrow space between two buildings—the buildings on the bar street were built very closely next to each other.

Pressing Summer against the textured surface of the wall, the man covered her mouth. "Shh!"

Their bodies almost pressed against each other in the narrow space.

In the confusion, she soon heard some footsteps passing by outside. The man shot a sharp, predatory glare at the commotion outside.

In that split second, a ray of light flashed through the space between the buildings and illuminated his face.

Summer had seen that charming face once in her past life. He was Mason.

Although she disliked Mason at that time, she was in awe of his good looks.

Summer hadn't expected to run into Mason right after she was reborn. The thought of Mason running into the fire to hug her at the final moments of her life made her chest tighten. Pain crashed through her body.Wait a minute. Did Mason walk past the bar street on that fateful night in her past life? She assumed he had heard about the incident because her nudes caused quite a stir back then. If Mason had already fallen in love with her at that time…A wave of pain rolled through her. She stopped herself from thinking further. The footsteps outside slowly receded.Letting out a relieved sigh, Mason loosened his grip on Summer's mouth. Gazing down with a frown, he removed her cap. "Ms. Hartford?"This was the second time Summer heard his voice. He had first addressed her in the fire, saying to her, "I will never leave you alone again."His voice was low and melodious, like an instrument.Staring up at Mason, all she could think of was Rose's cruel remarks during her final moments

Mason had put on a totally different demeanor by now. He looked intimidating and unapproachable. Anyone would freeze in his presence.Without taking a look at Summer, Mason barked a cold command at the man, "Send her home." Then, he entered a Maybach at the forefront of the motorcade. The inconsistency of his behavior confused Summer. Before this, he was cheerful and seductive around her. Why did he act like they were strangers now? Did he suffer from some sort of dissociative identity disorder?"Miss, mind sharing your home address?" the burly man respectfully inquired Summer. She politely turned him down. "It's fine. I'll get a cab home.""That won't do. Please have mercy on me and don't put me in a tight spot. I need to obey Mr. Hunt's orders. If I don't see you home safely, I might as well be damned!" The man put on a serious look.Feeling speechless, Summer deliberated for a bit before entering the car. Firstly, Mason would not harm her. Secondly, it was unsafe for a woman t

Rose was quite fond of him and picked him to carry out her plan of taking over Hartford Group. His call sent her into panic mode. She knew him too well. He'd definitely turn up his nose at her if he found out she had been gang-raped!Rose decided to keep it a secret from Anthony. She quickly regained her composure and answered his call in a coquettish manner, "Anthony, have you found Summer?""She's back at the Hartford residence," he replied grimly. "I lost touch with that hooligan I hired."Of course, he couldn't get in touch with that hooligan because that guy had snapped his SIM card in half in front of Summer."How did that happen?" Rose's eyes were filled with shock. She thought she had spiked Summer's drink with a strong dosage. Summer couldn't have possibly

Kristen was an award-winning actress before she married Luke. People had described her looks in this way—heart-stopping and breathtakingly beautiful. Many lamented her decision to retire when she was at the peak of her career. She might be near her 50s, but she looked like she was in her late 20s."Mom, are you free today? I can't get in touch with Rose. Can you go with me to shop for a dress for my birthday party instead? I know you have great taste, and you'll definitely pick the best dress for me," Summer asked Kristen sweetly. She did not want to miss out on the chance to repair her relationship with Kristen.Kristen shot her a shocked expression. It had been a few years since Summer called her "Mom".Henry and Luke appeared stunned as well. Their eyes darted between the mother and daughter. Despite feeling awkward, Kristen agreed to the invitation with a grunt. In the past, Summer would have flown into a rage at Kristen's nonchalant attitude. However, she was excited to g

The birthday party was a luxurious and breathtaking affair. Everyone knew Henry very much doted on Summer, his only granddaughter. More than once, he had formally declared his intention to let her inherit Hartford Group. Thus, it went without saying that no expense was spared for her 18th birthday party, much to the envy of the many heiresses and socialites in attendance.Soon, the party began. When Summer appeared on Henry's arm, she instantly captivated everyone with her beauty. All eyes fell on her, and no one could tear their eyes away. She was far too beautiful. Some of the socialites who had met Summer on other occasions started whispering among themselves."That's Summer? Did she get some work done? She didn't look like that the last time I saw her!""I bet she got plastic surgery. She probably even bleached her skin, too. She definitely didn't look that fair the last time. Her skin was so dull and sallow-looking. Look at her now! Her skin looks flawless!""Where did she g

Once the guests were gone, Henry turned grim."What on earth is going on? Robin, find the person who changed Summer's birthday video at once. I don't care what the mastermind's goal is. I'll make whoever it is pay for ruining my precious Summer's 18th birthday party!""Yes, Mr. Hartford Senior!" Robin Cohen, a hulking man with a fearsome expression, replied.Henry had brought Robin back from a human trafficking ring over two decades ago. Apparently, Robin had been trained since childhood to be an assassin, but Henry took him in as a godson. Having grown up in such a harsh environment, Robin had a rather cold personality. He listened to no one but Henry and was loyal to him alone.Summer wasn't sure what happened to Robin in the previous lifetime, but had he been alive, he probably wouldn't have allowed anyone to torment Henry to that extent.Once Robin left, Henry looked over at Summer and saw the sorrowful expression on her face. He instinctively assumed she was worried about R

Rose felt as if she had somehow taken Summer's place. Everything Summer should've been suffering through right now was happening to her instead. She wanted nothing more than to rip Summer to pieces right now, but she couldn't.Her plan had failed, so she still needed to rely on the Hartfords to survive."Summer did nothing wrong. I understand how you feel, Rose, but when something like this occurs, it's best to uncover the truth and clear your name as soon as possible. Otherwise, who knows how many ridiculous rumors would've been spread by the time you got someone to verify the video?"Once that happens, who would be willing to believe you even if you have ironclad evidence to prove yourself?" Henry said solemnly.Rose turned ghostly pale, but she continued to plead, "I really don't want to let a stranger see that video, Mr. Hartford Senior! Please, I'm begging you! Please make the call and get the video back!"Summer eyed Rose calmly. On this night in the previous lifetime, Rose

Rose stiffened. As it was, everything that happened over the last two days felt strange to her. It was as though someone knew what her plan was and had secretly messed things up for her. She was worried that if such a person did exist, that person might tell Summer what her plan had been. Thus, her heart trembled when she heard Summer's question."No. It's just… a similar outfit," Rose replied stiffly."Thank goodness," Summer said as she reached out to take Rose's hand with an expressionless face that was rather unlike her.Frightened, Rose instinctively shrank back slightly, but Summer pretended not to notice Rose's reaction as she tucked Rose's hair behind her ear and said, "Here I was thinking that I'd failed to take good care of you last night, so that's why…""Summer, how did you get home last night?" Rose asked."Weren't you the one who brought me home?" Summer replied, looking rather startled. "I'm not sure what happened either, but my memory of last night is rather fuzzy

"What does it have to do with you?" Mason sneered."You…" Snow was shocked by his indifference. She'd just caught them doing something inappropriate. Shouldn't he be panicking? Shouldn't he be begging for her to keep their secret? Then, Mason forcefully pushed the door, shoving Snow outside and slamming it shut.Snow stomped her foot on the ground furiously, but there was nothing she could do. She thought to herself that she would go look for Summer tomorrow. If Mason didn't care, surely Summer would have some shame. Then, with a huff, she yanked up the pajama top that had slid down her shoulders and stormed back to her room.…Early the next morning, Summer woke up, washed up, and went to knock on Mason's door. After that, the two of them went to have breakfast in the dining room.Snow, as a volunteer, was in the dining room as well. Summer sat on the bed while Mason knelt at the bedside. He carefully applied ointment to her bites with visible concern.Summer reassured him, "It's just mosquito bites. But she lost her balance and tumbled backward onto the bed, almost dragging Mason down with her.Luckily, he braced himself with both hands on either side of her, narrowly keeping them from falling. Now, he was hovering above her, and their eyes met.The scent of herbal balm filled the room, somehow making for a strange atmosphere."You got bitten on the cheek, too," Mason said as he looked at her face."Don't put that green stuff on my face. Otherwise, Mason truly didn't know what he would do.Would he try to snatch Summer away? What if she hated him for it? What if she was never happy again because of it?That wasn't what he wanted. All he wanted was for Summer to live a happy, joyful life. Whether or not he was a part of that life didn't seem to matter much."There are some water lilies over there. They might still be in bloom, so let's go check them out." Summer's cheeks were flushed, and she was still slightly out of breath."Alright." Mason nodded. The two of them walked over side by side and even held hands for a while. By the time they reached the water lily pond, Summer let go.There were two couples by the pond. One pair was leaning close to the other, while the other was taking photos.Mason looked at them, finding the scene both dazzling and enviable. Once again, he regretted accepting to pretend to be her brother."Look! There are so many water lilies!" Summer didn't notice Mason's gloom as she grabbed

Mason was visibly pleased when he heard Summer say that there was still plenty of time. He nodded without hesitation. After dinner, Summer and Mason took a leisurely stroll outside. The countryside at night was far quieter than the city. The farmland was in full bloom. With everything growing strong and lush, they walked along a small path, and when they looked up, the sky was filled with stars."There are so many stars!" Summer exclaimed.Mason looked up as well. He wasn't really interested in them. Rather than stars, he was far more interested in looking at Summer."You liked stars a lot when you were a kid," Mason said.Summer looked at him before she shook her head in disbelief. "We met just once when I was young. How much did I tell you?""You told me quite a lot," Mason said.Summer shook her head again. "It looks like I've always been weak to good-looking people. I told you everything, I guess."That made Mason's grin even wider. "So, is that a compliment?""Isn't that

"Hello," Mason greeted politely.Randall instantly lit up with the same warm smile as before. "No need to be so polite. The dishes are almost ready. Summer asked.Mason never expected that Summer treating him like her brother could have this sort of effect. "Whatever you like.""Let's eat inside first. We can walk around after dinner," Summer said. The owner chuckled and immediately had someone arrange it.It was the summer break, so there were quite a few guests at the farm, but not many were staying overnight.Summer had arrived late. Most people had already eaten and gone out for a stroll.Summer asked Mason softly, "What do you think? Do you like it? We can sleep here and go catch some shrimp tomorrow. There are many fruits and vegetables to pick, too. "When I came with my parents, they almost picked a whole carload and insisted on bringing them home. In the end, they gave

"How would you know where I want to go?" Mason asked with a smile."I just do!" Summer answered confidently. After passing what used to be the flea market, the road opened up into the countryside. Mason could see stretches of fields rolling by.On the way there, a call came in from the company.Summer glanced at Mason before she answered the call.Very quickly, she heard Lionel's voice. "Summer, have you eaten yet?""I still haven't. What's up?" Summer replied. Her tone was totally different from the one she used with Mason."There's a problem with the structure of the Escape From the Asylum project. I kept calling Hunt, but he hasn't been answering. Could you try contacting him later?" Lionel said.Hunt naturally referred to Saul.Ever since the restaurant incident, Saul had rarely shown up at the company. Even putting everything else aside, the incident that had taken Xena's life, according to Luke, had been a result of an internal family conflict. If Mason ignored her, that would have reflected really poorly on his character. It would have meant that he had no sense of responsibility.Mason gave her a gentle smile. Instead, she was greeted with the sight of a massive bouquet, as well as Mason waiting for her right next to the door."You're back?" Summer's eyes lit up as her face bloomed with joy. She skipped over to Mason excitedly."I thought you said you wouldn't be back until next week?" Summer asked."I missed you so much that I came home early."
