The staircase was barely lit, the stone wall was so uneven that the variation in thickness created additional shadows. Step by step she walked downstairs until her bare feet touched the floor at the bottom of the stairs. It was rpitch dark there. She could see only vague contours, though she didn't know what or from whom. Her breathing increased. In the silence, it was as if she were making too much noise by just inhaling.
She looked around carefully. All senses on edge. She noticed again that it smelled strange. Not musty and not damp, but old and with a touch of sandalwood.
Yes, that was it. Sandalwood, which she smelled at omem's, who loved incense and regularly lit some of it.
Step by step she walked forward. The floor was uneven in height and also made of stone. She could feel it with her bare feet. She was proud of herself for taking the time to notice, in her fear. Research shifted her focus and she could use that. She looked back to find out where the stairs to safety were. Her eyes increasingly turned to the dark, so she could see more and more.
‘If only there was a light,’ she said softly to herself.
And suddenly the room was bathed in soft light. Maddie's heart skipped a beat and she suppressed a scream. Halfway through her movement to run back to the stairs, she got stuck. The enchantment of what she saw overtook her. And slowed her movement.
She was in some sort of underground space. It looked like a tunnel, a kind of excavated space. She estimated that it was about two and a half meters high since she herself was 1 meter and 77 cm tall.
The floor was indeed made off heavy stones, as she had already felt with her feet. Lanterns burned in the niches in the wall. Maddie walked closer. Candles in the lanterns! How could candles suddenly burn? And all then at the same time?
It made her restless again and she felt the tension of fear building up in her stomach. Her heartbeat quickened.
And suddenly there was a loud voice calling her name.
She sat upright. Sweat on her forehead and a beating heart, toiling breath. Maddie sighed deeply and tried to calm herself.‘My God,’ she sighed and lay back on the many soft pillows in her bed.
The voice that called her name kept ringing in her head. Although it continued to terrify her, her curiosity regained the upper hand. She tried to dig into her memory whose voice she heard, it had sounded familiar. She couldn't get it clear.
Maddie patted her pillows and turned on her left side, her sleeping side, and relaxed. Just a few more days before she turned eighteen. And then Omem had an explantion wich had something to do with the recurring dream she had had for years.
Only recently she’d walk down the dark stairs in her dream. Previously she had only walked around in a dark house. She couldn't place that staircase. The house was a bit like Omem's, but she had never seen such a staircase there. And certainly not such a large tunnel with candles, which went on by themselves all at the same time.
Margie's eyelids grew heavy with worry and she slowly fell into a restless sleep.
‘Thom! Tho-om! ‘
Maddie was shouting loudly at the bottom of the stairs in the hall. Her brother had to go to school at eight and she hadn't seen him yet.
‘Thom!
Annoyed, she reached for her cellphone and called him. She heard his phone ring above her head, heard it vibrate.
‘Yes?’ Cracked his voice on the other end of the line. that sounded very sleepy
‘Thom it has been eight o'clock,’ she told him.
'Yes, what?'
He hung up, there was a lot of noise, and she guessed that he got up, fell, got dressed, fell again, packed his bag, and then appeared at the top of the stairs.
The blond hair was tousled was and his face had an expression of utter despair and disbelief.
'What time is it?'
‘Nearly eight,’ she said with a triumphant smile.
‘Huh? Oh. ‘He understood she had lied to him about the time, a little white lie. At a slightly less stressed pace, he came further down the stairs.
‘Here I have your lunch.’ Maddie held up a package wrapped in foil. ‘Peanut butter with cheese.’
A relieved grin crossed his face. ‘Thank you very much, little sister.’
As he passed, he kissed her head, grabbed the wrapped bread, and quietly walked out the front door.
‘Bye, see you later.’
Maddie laughed loudly, walked into the small living room, and fell onto thegray corner sofa.
‘Don't pop like that,’ her father grumbled, ‘you canjust sit down tot know. He studied her.
‘Omem asked me if it's okay for you to come and live with her this summer.’ ‘Living?’
‘It has to do with her herbal study or something like that. An all of her other projects that she could use a little help with.‘
Maddie looked at her father and thought he looked tired. She knew he worked extra long hours, in the factory where he workes, in the large production hall as a polisher and welder. An old profession that he had practiced all his life. His dark hair turned white on the sides and from there where a succession of gray colors, in varying degrees.
His brown eyes looked at her lovingly.Don't let Omem drive you crazy, I know she can be very intense sometimes.’
Maddie smiled. ‘That will be fine, Dad. Can you make it here alone? ‘
'Oh yeah. I'll go eat at Lobke's if Thom fails. She asks that regularly. ’He promised with a smile and stood up. ‘I'll see you tonight.’
He pressed a loving kiss on her head, a wave and he was gone. She heard the back door slam shut, the sound of the garden gate, and the creak of her father's bicycle slowly dying away.
Lobke had been her father's girlfriend for six months. She lived a few blocks away in the same residential area. She was almost six years younger than Maddie's father and a strong, independent woman who was full of life.
She had a son of about eight years old and she had a very different personality then her mother had.Her mother had always lived in the protection of her family and only cared for others. Only after falling in love with another man, she did choose for herself and for her own life.
Maddie did not want to think about that bad time that followed, again. She was happy that peace and tranquility had returned to the family. And also glad that her father had found someone else he wanted to share his life with. Although the L.A.T. relationship was something he found difficult to get used to.
Maddie no longer had such intense contact with her mother. There was still a lot of pain and unspoken grief between them. Especially incomprehension.
That she had chosen someone else over the family and left without deliberation, without discussing anything, that hurt. Maddie thought it was wrong. She knew the divorce was a thing between her parents. But her mother hadn't told or explained anything to her, and that had touched her deeply.
They had a special bond, four hands on one stomach, so to speak. But those events had broken her confidence and left a scar on her soul.
The contact with her grandmother had intensified after that. Maddie smiled. Omem was a herbalist, a Wicca, a witch as she used to call herself. She always had a pill, an herb, or a tea for everything. She loved painting and being creative.
She worked with young people who were struggling and sometimes it seemed like she had a youthshelter in her big house. Maddie met a lot off young people there, whom she had never seen before. And who would have spent the night there.
Grandpa had been a druid, according to the stories, and had also understood herbs. He always had a preference for trees. The story went that he even spoke to trees. According to Omem, he had become a Druid, a Celtic priest with an understanding of nature, because his family line included Scots and Irish, who had also practiced that skill.
Maddie thought everything was interesting, she also wanted to know all about hergs and that might well happen after her eighteenth birthday. She would, therefore officially initiated into Wicca and she was looking forward to taking in that knowledge. Suddenly her phone rang and she saw that it was Raven calling. But Raven never called.
He sometimes sent an app, but call? But then he was not at Omems, because there was no mobile phone connection possible, for some strange reasons.
‘Maddie talking.’
‘Raven,’ his voice sounded a little as if he were standing in a hollow space, there was some sort of echo. Maddie smiled and could imagine how uncomfortable he looked when calling that was so not his thing.
‘Yes, Raven?’
‘Can you come here? Maybe I need your help, I'm not sure, but it's nice you'd be here too. ‘
‘Where am I supposed to go?’
'Oh yeah sorry. Um, I'm at the Martini Church in town, you know, the one downtown. ‘
Maddie raised her eyebrows in surprisingly.
‘And you need me for what?’ she asked.
‘See you in a bit.’ He hung up.
Maddie sighed and shook her head, short-spoken as always. She had no idea what he was doing. She grabbed her keys and hurried out of the house
She arrived at the church ten minutes later. Bur, she didn’t see Raven anywhere she and put her old purple bicycle in the bicycle rack.
The old church was built in the year 1000, as a wooden church, and in the year 1498, newly built of stone with a church tower and a carillon. She decided to walk around the church in her search for Raven. On the east side, was the oldest entrance to the church, with a gate from 1652. There was only a brown bicycle, which surely not belonged to Raven. To the side was a small wooden entrance that used to be made for the poor and the orphans who came to the curch. When she reached the north side, she saw the grand entrance with the beautiful, large wooden doors. However, the door was closed and locked.
‘Gosh Raven,’ she sighed. Where was he hanging out?
She discovered a small door near the main entrance and was surprised that it opened. The history of the church immediately affected her. Like old buildings always did.
'Hello?'
Her voice was hollow, echoed in the great room of the church.
Maddie had never been inside but had cycled past it hundreds of times on her way to the city center. She was impressed. She experienced the greatness of the church and could almost feel the people who had once been there.
Rows of wooden benches in a semicircular circle, with rows of wooden chairs in the middle. Right in front of the entrance, the old, antique pulpit with the carved wood. Beautiful white pillars contrast with the brown color of old trees. Large chandeliers and a huge organ, with large pipes and fine carvings, decorated with gold leaf, placed high above everything on the first floor. As always, she could almost feel, almost touch and breathe in the history.
It was a certain kind of energy, it was as if she could almost hear the voices of people that onces walkes there. The more that happened in a place dealing with intense emotions, the more she had such perceptions. It affecte her.
It took a lot of energy to let it all in. Omem had already said she had to learn to close herself off for that. But how did she do that? That church had a very great attraction to her. She almost lost herself in time that moment.
She did not see Raven and went outside again. For a moment, it was as if the sounds of the city were suddenly ten times louder.
As if she had arrived from the silence of ancient times, back into modern times. She slowly returned to the present, shaking off the energy of the past.
She decided to walk another round around the church and if Raven didn't show up by then, she would go home.
Annoyed, she walked past the war memorial. It was a statue of a woman with a ribbon of honor, placed on an arcade-shaped brick wall.
‘Faithful to the death,’ it read. She wanted to walk angrily.
Suddenly, she heard a noise from behind the monument. J
ust as she was about to investigate, the tall, muscular figure of Raven suddenly appeared. Just out of nowhere, it seemed.
‘Raven!’ She wanted to grumble at him loudly for scaring her so much, but stopped implementing the idea. Raven had a girl in his strong arms clinging to him with her arms around his neck. Red hair, brown eyes, lots of freckles, and she wore a black poncho. Raven carefully put her down on her legs and the girl looked at Maddie for a second with asarcastic look in her eyes that quickly dyed and she made a smile.
Raven pulled the girl by the arm until they arrived at the bench next to the church, where older people regularly sat and talked in good weather. However, no one was there at that time. Raven relaxed a little and Maddie saw him sigh for a moment.
‘This is Silke,’ Raven muttered more than he spoke and it seemed as if he was avoiding her gaze.
The girl shook Maddie's hand and her brown eyes looked at Maddie inquisitively.
‘Hi, I'm Silke’
‘Hi, I am Maddie’
There was a pause and Maddie turned to Raven.
‘What were you doing at that monument? I was there just a moment ago. I even went inside the church because I thought you were there. Because your voice was hollow when you called. What do you actually need me for?’ rattled Maddie.
Raven opened his mouth to answer, but Silke was ahead of him.
‘Can we hurry up and go to Mrs. Donia? You can talk later! ‘It sounded snarling.
Maddie was more surprised at her destination than at the tone of her voice.
‘To Omem?’
Maddie no longer understood and looked questioningly at Raven.
‘Let's go,’ said Raven gruffly, his eyes darkening.
How strange.
Maddie took her bicycle from the bicycle rack and chased the two, who were already on their way to Stationssteet in a hurry.
‘Well, there you are girl, perfect.’
Omem greeted Silke as if she were an old acquaintance she was already expecting. She immediately pushed a large mug of soothing herbal tea into her hands.
‘Do you know her omem?’ asked Maddie, surprised.
'Of course! Silke is a distant relative of yours, you tell by her red hair, Maddie.’
Omem immediately poured a mug of hot tea for everyone and the kitchen filled with the scent of chamomile, the herb known for its calming effect.
‘Why is she family then? I've never seen her, where does she come from?’ Maddie looked at Silke for a moment, who was sitting there quietly.
Omem laughed. ‘Silke is Janis's daughter, and Janis is my sister's son.’
Maddie thought about how that was exactly and had a ripple of thought in her forehead.
‘She’s just family Maddie,’ said Raven, and he sounded curt, ‘that's all you need to know.’
She stuck her tongue out at him and then he burst out laughing.
‘You will come and live here tomorrow. Saturday evening, we celebrate the Lughnasadh for a good harvest this year,’Omem set the agenda for the days ahead. She looked sternly at Silke and Raven from over her reading glasses. ‘You are also celebrating it. There will be delicious freshly baked bread and some games. And then on Sunday, we celebrate Maddie's eighteenth birthday.’
Contrary to what he normally did, Raven nodded in agreement, without the slightest resistance.
That really surprised Maddie. She also thought he was very thoughtful as if something was bothering him. He was so absent and the look in his bright blue eyes was very restless as if he had to keep an eye on the surroundings. Like ther was a tread to be expected.
‘Are you okay?’ Omem's voice sounded concerned, drawing attention to Silke, who smiled faintly.
‘I’m a little tired, of everything that happened.’ Silke looked at Raven for a moment.
Omem understood and rose from the table.
‘Maddie you take her to the guest room. The green room is ready for her on the second floor. Then I'll start with lunch.’
Maddie and Silke went silently tot the front of the hall to the large wooden staircase, which still had the carved wood from the past. There was an old gaslamp, made of all kinds of glass. Grandpa had turned it into an electric lamp a long time ago. Maddie walked silently to the front landing, where four doors opened.
The master bedroom of omem, the bathroom next to her room. A door with a staircase to the second floor behind it and a door, to another small bedroom, which made up for the lack of space with a balcony.
Above the stairs were a pair of large stained glass windows that let the light in with all kinds of colors that brightend the hal.
Even on gloomy days. On the second floor where four rooms, just big enough for a bed, a closet and a desk.
And another bathroom with a roll-top bath.
In the middle of everything was a space, big enough for two sofas, a table, and a small TV. A kind of living room for when the young people wanted to isolate themselves, as omem used to say.
Maddie opened the door to the left room, which had light green wallpaper and matching pillows, and a bedspread. That’s why it was calles the green room.
‘Here's your room,’ she said to Silke.
Silke dropped herself on the bed and gave a deep sigh.
‘Tell me how you ended up behind that monument, with Raven. I mean where did you comefrom? It was as if you suddenly appeared out of the blue
If you had come by train you could have walked more easily from the station to Omem, which is much shorter. So what were you doing at church? ‘Maddie heard herself rattle again, which she always seemed to do when she was tense. She sat in the armchair that stood there and looked expectantly at Silke.
Silke sighed and turned on her side. ‘If you don't mind, I'll take a rest first. I'm so tired. So much happened before we appeared, ‘her voice was soft. Silke's eyes closed.
Maddie studied Silke's face. With that many freckles and red hair, she couldn't be anything else but family.
Red hair was rare enough without family ties.
Then, why had she never heard of her and why had Raven carried her? Where did they come from? Turned up, Silke had said. What actually happened in Omem's house? She thought about it. Suddenly there was so much mystery to be discovered in the Stationsstreet.
She wondered why she hadn't thought about it before.
Omem was a witch, a Wicca, a herbalist and Maddie had always known that. She was a modern witch, just someone who lived close to nature and used various rituals, cellibrating the eighth Sabbath. And not like a witch from a fairytale book. Yes, of course, that wasn't something that happened in every household, but it wasn't completely eccentric.
It was normal for Maddie, she knew no better than that Omen lived like that. But all that mystery. Was that part of the deal or was there something else going on?
Maddie left Silke's room quietly and she slowly closed the door. Raven had also appeared in her life. Also through Omem. She also did not know where he came from. And why he lived with her grandmother. Why had Raven actually called her on the phone? That was something she didn't understand. What was the point of her going to the Martini Church? To see how he came from somewhere, with that Silke in his arms?
Maddie walked down both stairs in exasperation. Lost in thought, she ended up in the long corridor below.
That hallway had doors to the library, living room, office, basement, backroom, and dining room.
At the end of the long hall, was a small cozy kitchen, which also had a dining table, even if it was a small one.
Maddie went to the library. Being surrounded by books and knowledge always calmed het down. On the mantelpiece were all kinds of picture frames with photos of her whole family.
Also very old pictures of people she did not know, but where her ancestors. There was also a photo of her parents with her brother and herself. Maddie picked up the photo and looked at it.
She saw herself as a little girl, with a white lace dress and fierce redcurls, carrot red. She held tight to her father's hand, who looked strong and tough, with a dark mustache and dark hair.
Her mother had long dark brown hair, there was a faint smile on her lips, but her blue eyes were shining. Thom held his mother's hand and looked bored as if he didn't care. Maddie smiled. Some things didn't change and other things totally. Who would have thought that her parents would divorce.
She dropped onto the black leather couch. Her whole life had changed then, the image of the world she had. Her protected, safe world had turned into a fearful field of uncertainty.
No, she didn't want to think about it anymore.
She jumped up again and walked past the books. She tilted her head to read the titlesTurned. The children's books were no longer at her eye level. There where now books with titles such as The Witch Within You, Herbs and Pentagrams, Spells and the Sabbaths, True Magic in the World.
Maddie had never noticed that there were so many books on that subject. She was shocked when Omem suddenly stood in front of her.
‘Are you coming, child? Lunch is ready.’
Maddie nodded and left the library.
The celebration of Lammas, or Lugnasadh, was thethe celebration of the upcoming harvest.Omen baked her own bread. The whole house smelled like a bakeryin the morning and whetted everyone's hunger. It was one of the Sabbaths that a Wicca celebrated and it was all about honoring nature.Maddie had brought her belongingsfrom her house to Omem’shousethe day before. She had taken up residence in the bedroom with the large balcony. She loved having a balcony with patio
The next morning Maddie woke up with a shock. For a moment she did not know where she was until she recognized the open doors that led to the balcony and heard the sound of the twittering birds. Eighteen years old, it shot through her and she felt a strange tension in her stomach.Omem had made a special tea for her, which she drank before going to sleep. A mixture of marigold, elderberry, and anise, sealed with a ritual spell. Among other things, it was supposed to help her refresh her mind. She had slept wonderfully. No nightmares and no dreams at all because she couldn't remember anything. And that was quite strange. She also had a strange feeling, as if she were very bright, more sensitive than usual. As if she was more open to the world and had stepped out of a fog. Maybe it had to do with the herbal tea, which she had been drinking for years and left since the day before.Birthday! She jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom. If it was time
Maddie woke up the next morning and, for the first time in a long time, felt wonderfully rested. She stretched herself and got up.The group with Raven, Esmee, and Rodolf felt so familiar. She was happy with this new phase in her life. And the magic, it stimulated all her senses. She had also acquired a new image of Raven. Not only did he have a rebellious side, but she had also seen a more mature side of him. The side that made decisions and used spells and magic with a certain carelessness, but was also was protective of her. She couldn't say it didn't affect her. She loved it and it touched something deep inside her. And then those times when he had just put his arm around her. It gave her butterflys in her stomach, remembering it. She got into the shower singing and she song when came out from under it.She brushed her long red hair until it shone and put on her black dress, with her combat boots underneath. It was a bit of a gothic clothing style, which she liked
Maddie woke up and stared into the dark. It took her a moment to realize that she was lying on her own bed with her clothes on.Apparently, she had been left to sleep and not called for dinner.Maddie sat on the edge of the bed and saw on her mobile that it was the middle of the night. The moon shone into her room and she saw that it was a waxing moon, spreading a bright light. It gave her energy that resonated in her body and she enjoyed it for a moment. She got up, walked to the door, and wanted to go to the sink to brush her teeth. Suddenly she heard something in the hallway and looked carefully through the crack in the door. She saw Silke pass by, who quickly pulled Raven by his hand. She heard the bass of his voice but couldn't understand the words. Silke pulled him down the stairs. Maddie did not hesitate, she followed them curiously. She had to admit that what Esmee had said about them both troubled her. She wondered if it could be true. Whet
Maddie woke up with a start. At first, she thought she had dreamed of everything, but it didn't last long. She realized it had really happened, no matter how strange. The heat of the sun, coming in through the French doors, betrayed that it was almost noon. She felt bright and energized again and jumped out of bed. She quickly took a shower. Then she put on an army green T-shirt dress, sneakers, and she was ready to go. She walked down the stairs and meanwhile twisted her long hair into a bun. At the library, she hesitated for a moment, then entered quietly. In the twilight, she saw the snow-white sheets that emphasized Raven's dark hair. The curtains let alittle light through. But Maddie saw him clearly. She walked closer. She could tell from his calm breathing that he was sleeping. The beard stubbles gave him a bit of a rebellious look, just as he actually was. Maddie woke up. She felt strange. She remembered seeing Raven. What happened next was vague, it was locked up in a kind of mist. As if she had been ill, with a high fever and she was delirious. It was a kind of blanket that covered all memory. But she felt oké. She could smell it had rained outside and went to the open doors. Wonderful that freshness in the air, which had precipitated and washed away all the dust. In the days that followed, it was quiet in Omem's big house. Everyone had his or her tasks to perform. The last weeks of the summer holidays were coming to an end, it was almost September.Raven avoided Maddie and when they saw each other, there was a kind of distance between them.Maddie sighed deeply as she sat in the kitchen and realized that Raven was still on a mission. Omem looked at her and asked her what was wrong.‘I am in love with Raven,’ she confessed and it felt good to say that, but it also hurt. ‘We kissed omem, but after that he just ignored me. What should I do? Soon I will also lose his friendship.‘For a moment she saw the great surprise in her grandmother's eyes.‘Yes, because the power of your spell is gone,’ said Maddie, but she had no intention of elaborating on it. The most important thing for her was that she was afraid of losing Raven.‘Maybe you should talk to him about it,
The next morning Moon was in the kitchen preparing breakfast. She had set the old table and put a pot of fresh tea on it.Esmee and Rodolf were first who sat down and joined her.Rodolph saw the angry look in Esmee her eyes, that he had also noticed a few times the previous evening. He was not aware of any harm but knew that Esmee had her own view of events and suspected that he, therefore, did not understand what was going on.‘What is it?’ He asked, when she looked at him for the umpteenth time, reproachfully.‘You know what,’ she said angrily.Rodolf had dealt with her anger before and understood that he couldn't guess exactly what was going on.‘Tell me what I have done,’ he said patiently, his eyes looking straight at her.She peeled her egg with short, violent movements.‘Glad I'm not that egg,’ murmured Rodolf. And then she laughed and it sounded liberating.
On the day of the blood moon ceremony, Maddie and Raven arrived exactly on time on the beach of Tammer. No one knew where they had been or what they had been doing all those days.Three minutes before the shadow of the earth slowly passed in front of the moon, they appeared hand in hand. They suddenly stood there, appearing in front of thousands on the big stones. High above the members of the covens, who had come from far and wide to witness it all. They held hands tightly. Only eyes fixed on each other as if nobody else mattered. The height of the eclipse lasted almost an hour and none of the covens had access to any magic.Yet that was not the case for Raaf and Maddie. They radiated the green and red magic that illuminated them during the moon's eclipse. The dark red glow of the darkened moon had an effect on Maddie. When the magic was slowly released again, she raised the staff made of the oak tree in greeting to the moon. Then Maddie held one end and Raven
Green tree magic still lingered when Raven disappeared and Maddie felt how she absorbed everything in her body. She closed her eyes so she not lost the control that time.It bubbled in her like a shaken bottle of bubbles that was about to explode. She was sure she could control it if she didn't lose focus.Maddie ran to the library, to Esmee and Rodolf. She told them what had happened in short terms. She paced back and forth.‘When Silke talked about the red blood moon, I got the feeling that there is a solution in me somewhere related to it, but I don’t know what it is!’‘Moon, moon,’ murmured Rodolf as he contributed.Esmee sighed and raised her arms to heaven in a hopeless gesture.'What? Be clear in your thoughts!’Rodolf grinned. 'Okay. Queen Frava is the primeval mother, she descends from the moon goddess and the God of the Forest. She stands for fertility, love, and lust, but was
When Raven returned to the Stationsstraat, with Maddie by his side, everyone was happy that they appeared safe and sound.Moon tried to talk to Raven about what had happened, but his gaze blocked all communication.Maddie, on the other hand, hugged her grandmother and forgave her for what had happened. There was no point in putting energy into something that had happened and had a good intention, according to Maddie.Fortunately, the first weeks were characterized by the start of school and thus, messy weeks.Picking up books, buying school supply’s at the last minute, meet the teachers and classmates and learn the class schedules. The blood moon ceremony still fell in a fairly quiet period. Maddie was happy, because she found it difficult, with so much energy and knowledge, to walk around the school of her ordinary life. With the tree magic, insight her, she felt, compared to her classmates, like an old fossil. She and Raven were toge
