CHAPTER 8
I entered the elevator heading to the penthouse and immediately the sound signalled a stop, I stepped out while Arianna walked just a step behind me.
She kept quiet, but I felt her gaze burning into my back, simmering with that familiar defiance she didn’t bother to hide.
We’d barely crossed the door when a passing servant stopped, head bowed as he said, “Sir, you have a call waiting on line six.”
I gave a slight nod, then turned to Arianna. “Go to your room and stay there. I won’t be long.” My voice was low, leaving no room for argument.
She narrowed her eyes at me, still clearly displeased. But, for once, she didn’t argue, which was good. I didn’t have the energy for that right now.
With one last pointed look, she turned on her heel and disappeared down the corridor. I watched her go, appreciating the way she held her head high even when she was fuming. Once she was out of sight, I turned and headed for my study.
Once inside, I settled into the leather chair, breathing in the scent of cedar as I reached for the telephone. “Yes?”
The line connected as one of my men reported a delay in our shipment. My fingers tapped the desk impatiently as I listened, my jaw tightening with each word.
“Sort it,” I ordered before rattling off instructions and waited until I was satisfied the issue was resolved before ending the call.
Leaning back, I rubbed a hand over my jaw, letting my focus shift for the first time since I’d left the club the previous night.
As I turned in the chair, my gaze drifted to the monitor displaying footage from around the estate.
One feed in particular drew my attention—Arianna, alone in her room, examining the items I’d bought her earlier.
She held up each piece, studying them with disbelief and curiosity, a faint frown furrowing her brow.
Suddenly she let the clothing she was holding go and picked up the black lingerie set, her fingers brushing the delicate lace, and my pulse quickened at the sight.
That set was no accident. I’d chosen it deliberately, pushing her boundaries. The image of her wearing it sparked something primal within me, a need I could barely contain.
I inhaled and exhaled softly, trying my best to school my thoughts.
A low growl echoed in my mind, pulling me from the thought.
“Why haven’t you told her about us?” Mars, my wolf, pressed impatiently.
I clenched my jaw, brushing a hand over my face. “Because,” I replied slowly, my irritation evident. He didn’t always get it. “She doesn’t know what she is. She doesn’t know about her wolf, Mars. If I tell her now, it could scare her off.”
I paused, the memory of her defiance flashing in my mind. “She’s already headstrong without bringing our bond into the mix.”
Mars huffed in frustration. “But she’s our mate. The bond is there, Damon. How long are you going to wait?”
My thoughts drifted back to that night at Arthdal Strike, the first time I’d laid eyes on her.
Mars had recognized her instantly, growling ‘mate’ before I even had a chance to register what was happening.
I recalled the surge of fury that had torn through me as I’d watched Luca’s hands on her, the way he’d looked at her like she was some cheap prize.
Rage had simmered just below the surface, and it had taken everything I had to keep it contained.
Mars had been pushing forward, ready to tear Luca apart then and there. But Arianna hadn’t felt a thing.
And that ticked something within me. She’d looked right at me, though I was shrouded in darkness but there had been no flicker of recognition.
Even later in my office, when I’d stood close enough to hear her heartbeat, she hadn’t reacted.
I sighed, fingers tapping rhythmically on the desk. “Can you sense her wolf at all, Mars?” I asked, hoping he might detect something I hadn’t.
“Honestly? No,” Mars replied, his voice tense. “But it’s like she’s there and npot there at the same time, hidden—just out of reach. Like a shadow I can’t grasp. Something’s blocking her, Damon.”
I leaned forward, my eyes fixed on the monitor, as Arianna placed the lingerie back in its box, folding her arms as she mulled over the choices in front of her.
“This isn’t good,” I thought, my jaw tightening. “I need to find out what’s going on with her wolf.”
But I knew I had to approach carefully. Push too hard, and she’d shut me out completely.
A knock broke the silence, and I turned as the door opened to reveal Xander, strolling in with his usual relaxed grin.
“Hey,” he greeted, dropping into the chair across from me.
I gave him a nod, my gaze lingering on the screen a moment longer before I shifted my focus to Xander. But he’d noticed. As always, his sharp gaze flickered to the monitor, zeroing in on the feed showing Arianna in her room.
A faint smirk tugged at his lips.
“So…” he began, leaning back, his eyes narrowing playfully. “Why’d you make her an exclusive, hmm?”
I kept my expression neutral, shifting slightly in my chair. “You know the rules. The fewer people involved, the less risk there is.”
He laughed, clearly not buying it. “Really? All business, huh?” He raised an eyebrow, teasing. “Well, if she means that little to you, how about tossing her my way when you’re done? You know, just to—”
He didn’t get the chance to finish. A growl ripped from my throat, cutting him off, my grip tightening on the arms of the chair. Mars surged forward, possessiveness flaring hot and fast.
“She belongs to me, Xander. Back off.”
Xander held his hands up in mock surrender, his grin unfazed. “Easy, Damon. Just a joke.” He chuckled, leaning back with a knowing glint in his eyes. “Though, I’ll admit, I didn’t expect you to be so… territorial.”
I didn’t bother replying. My glare was enough to silence any further comments.
He cleared his throat, his tone shifting to something more neutral. “Fine, I get it. You’ve staked your claim.” He shrugged. “Anyway, have you heard about the shipments?”
I gave a slight nod, letting his words pull me back to business, though I felt my mind drifting, back to the girl upstairs and the bond that had already begun to twist itself around my control.
“Good, you need to be with her soon.”
“Mars?”
“Our mate needs us to help wake her wolf.”
I rolled my eyes internally at him. There he went again.
***************CHAPTER 9I laid the last piece of clothing down on the bed and took a step back, surveying the ridiculous amount of clothes Damon had bought for me. From daring dresses to lacy undergarments, each item seemed to scream a challenge, pushing boundaries I wasn’t even sure I had. I hadn’t ever worn clothes like this in my life but when Damon picked each, he seemed to have me as a target in his mind. I reached down, picking up a dark red dress that looked like it belonged to someone bolder, someone who didn’t mind being seen. My fingers brushed over the soft, luxurious fabric, and I couldn’t stop the small thrill that raced up my spine.Shaking my head, I tossed the dress aside, eyeing the black lingerie set sitting neatly on top of its box. The delicate lace seemed to mock me, and I felt a mix of dread and, embarrassingly, curiosity. I could practically hear Damon’s voice in my head, his cold command from the boutique still fresh in my mind. ‘You’ll wear these for
***************CHAPTER 10~Trisha’s POV~I sat back in the plush leather chair, eyes closed as the stylist worked on my hair. The faint hum of the dryer and the scent of perfume mixed with hairspray filled the salon, a soothing routine I usually enjoyed. But my calm was short-lived as my phone buzzed on the counter beside me. I reached for it, answering without checking the caller ID, expecting it to be my P.A. with updates for the day.“Miss Trisha,” came a hesitant voice—a familiar one from Damon’s house staff. “I thought you’d want to know... Mr. Dark brought in a new guest.”My grip tightened around the phone. “A guest?” I repeated, feigning indifference. “What kind of guest?”“A woman,” the staff member replied, her voice lowering as if to keep the conversation discreet. “He brought her in from Arthdal Strike. She’s… an exclusive, apparently.”My jaw clenched, but I forced my tone to remain neutral. “Did he now?” I murmured, a slight tremor betraying my restraint. “This exclus
***************CHAPTER 11~Arianna’s POV~As much as I didn’t want to eavesdrop, I did. His tone changed with every sentence that left his lips, his irritation becoming more evident than before. Damon’s cold dismissal replayed in my mind as I lay in bed that night. After sending me to my room without so much as an explanation, he’d locked himself away, leaving me alone with nothing but my thoughts and the unsettling memories of the day. Until now, I had no phone, nothing connecting me to the world outside his estate. And it was becoming boring.I had a boyfriend and a close friend and I know by now they'd be wondering where I was and if I was okay. Just thinking about it made my heart ache. I am sure they'll have tried reaching me through my uncle but…I shook my head. All this was just because of Damon and my Uncle. There was no escaping the way his presence invaded every part of my mind. Everything about him demanded control, even in his silence. The next morning came with an ea
***************CHAPTER 12~Damon’s POV~The moment I heard the gasp, Mars stirred in my mind, his low growl vibrating with urgency. “Our mate is here,” he alerted me, his voice sharp and clear.I spun, my eyes catching sight of Arianna at the cracked door before she disappeared, her shadow slipping back up the stairs. I barely heard the guards behind me—Mars was seething, pushing forward with a fury that made my skin tingle. After a cold nod to my men, instructing them to continue, I left the room, taking slow, steady steps towards the entrance of the underground house. When I reached Arianna’s room, I saw Xander standing far too close to her, his hand tilted under her chin, his smirk too easy, too familiar. Mars growled in my mind, ready to devour our friend for daring to touch what was ours. A flash of possessiveness surged through me, and before I knew it, I’d crossed the space between us.“What the hell are you doing with my m—” I caught myself, clenching my jaw before the wo
***************CHAPTER 13~Arianna’s POV~I stood in front of the mirror, reluctantly smoothing down the shimmering navy-blue gown Damon had picked. The fabric hugged my curves, clinging to my skin with a snugness that felt both foreign and oddly electric. The gown stopped daringly above my mid-thigh, its sleeveless neckline dipping just low enough to leave me uneasy. With a final tug, I took a steadying breath, prepared to walk out and face him.But just as I reached for the door, my gaze landed on the open window, and an idea took root—a reckless, dangerous idea.During the earlier stroll with Damon, I’d noticed there were fewer guards than usual around the estate. Now, with him waiting in my room and assuming I’d obey his every whim, this could be my only chance to slip away. And after he’d claimed I belonged to him, the urge to break free pulsed through me, stronger than anything else.Suddenly I heard his displeased voice and froze when I got to the window. “Arianna, are you
***************CHAPTER 14~Trisha’s POV~The plane touched down with a gentle bump, and as it taxied to the gate, I checked my reflection in the small mirror inside my compact. Fresh, composed, and more than ready for what lay ahead. It had been two years since I last visited Thania, and as much as I hated the chaos of this city, today was different. Today, I was here with a purpose.Stepping out of the gate and into the arrivals lounge, I spotted my brother, Matteo, standing near the escalators, his tall frame cutting a formidable figure among the crowd. He met my gaze with a grin that held both amusement and a touch of exasperation. Even as he waved me over, I could tell he wasn’t thrilled to see me here—not under these circumstances.“Well, look who’s decided to grace us with her presence,” he said, his tone teasing as he pulled me into a quick hug.“Don’t start,” I replied, rolling my eyes. “This isn’t exactly a pleasure trip.”Matteo chuckled as he grabbed my bag, guiding me t
***************CHAPTER 15~Trisha’s POV~The streets of Thania sped by in a blur as we made our way across the city. Matteo sat next to me, his eyes fixed on the road, but I could feel his unease radiating in waves. Good. He knew this wasn’t a social call, and Luca Tadeo wasn’t exactly the type you visited without cause. As we pulled up to the lavish but dark façade of Luca’s mansion, two guards approached, eyeing us warily. Matteo rolled down his window and flashed them his ID, a quick display of who we were. They nodded, then stepped aside, allowing us to drive through the towering iron gates.Inside, Luca was waiting in his luxurious sitting room, lounging on a sofa. He glanced up as we entered and a smile spread across his face.“Trisha Don Mars. What a surprise,” he drawled, standing to greet me with a gaze that lingered just a little too long. “I didn’t think the esteemed family would show up at my door. To what do I owe the pleasure?”I smiled tightly, taking a seat across f
***************CHAPTER 16~Arianna’s POV~I spent the rest of the evening in a daze, replaying the events from the afternoon in my mind. My skin still prickled from Damon’s touch, his unsettling gaze, and the strange sensation of both fear and something else that had bloomed between us.I hated how the memory lingered, how his words replayed long after he’d left. I sighed, but before I could make of the footsteps nearing my room, the door suddenly shot open, pulling me out of my thoughts.Damon entered with his usual cold expression, his tone steely as his eyes bore into me. “Come with me. We are going out.”“Enh...” He cut me off before I could find the words. "Get... you’re already dressed. We’re leaving now.”“Where are we going?” I found my voice after what felt like an eternity. “You don’t need to know. All you are to do is follow me.”I crossed my arms in front of my chest. “I’m not going.” Anger flashed in his eyes as he crossed the distance to where I stood. “I don’t want t
***************CHAPTER 28~Arianna’s POV~The ride back to Damon’s estate was suffocating. Every time I opened my mouth to speak, his sharp gaze in the rearview mirror silenced me.His words replayed in my mind like a broken record. “You’re mine.”The possessiveness of it made my skin crawl, but the way my heart reacted—skipping in some unexplainable rhythm—was what unsettled me most.I glanced out the window, the dense forest surrounding the road seemed to close in on us as the trees watched our every move. Then, the car screeched to a halt.“What now?” I muttered, my nerves already frayed.Damon didn’t answer immediately. He scanned the road ahead, his posture tense. My gaze followed his, and that’s when I saw it—a black SUV parked sideways across the narrow path.“Stay in the car,” he ordered.“Like hell I will,” I snapped, adrenaline spiking.“Arianna.” His tone was sharper now, leaving no room for argument. “Stay. Here.”I shrank back into my seat as Damon stepped out. The air o
***************CHAPTER 27~Damon’s POV~The drive back to the estate was anything but smooth, even though the road stretched out like a ribbon under the early morning sun. My hands tightened around the steering wheel, frustration bubbling in me as Mars prowled in the back of my mind.“Two of Luca’s men,” he snarled, his anger intertwining with mine.“They won’t dare step foot on my territory again,” I muttered aloud, though no one could hear me. The report from last night still replayed in my head. My men had spotted them skulking near the estate's perimeter, and their intentions were clear—Arianna. The idea of anyone coming near her made my blood boil. Mars growled, his presence pushing against my control.“She’s ours. She doesn’t even know what she’s risking.”I didn’t need him to remind me. Arianna had been a thorn in my side since the moment we met. Her stubbornness, her defiance—it made her infuriating and irresistible all at once. Every time she pushed back, it only made me
***************CHAPTER 26~Arianna’s POV~The car tore through the darkened streets, its engine growling like a restless predator. Damon’s hands gripped the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles pale under the dim glow of the dashboard.I crossed my arms, my frustration boiling over. “You can’t just drag me around like I’m some kind of possession, Damon. I’m a person, not—”“You’re mine, Arianna,” he interrupted firmly. “And I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you safe.”I scoffed, turning my head to glare at him. “Safe? You left me on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. What part of that screams 'safe’ to you?”His jaw clenched, his gaze fixed ahead. “You needed a reminder that actions have consequences. Wandering off wasn’t an option.”“You’re unbelievable,” I muttered, slumping back into the seat. My hands itched to grab the door handle, to throw myself out of the car if only to prove a point. But with the speed he was driving, that wasn’t an option unless I had a death wi
***************CHAPTER 25~Arianna’s POV~Martha’s apartment felt warm and cozy as I sat on the couch holding a mug of hot cocoa. Martha was sprawled across her armchair, legs tucked beneath her as she listened to my vague complaints about my “new job.”“I don’t even know where to begin,” I sighed, leaning back against the cushions. “He’s arrogant, controlling, and honestly… insufferable.”Martha raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. “Sounds like your boss is a piece of work. What kind of job is this again?”“Let’s just say it’s temporary,” I muttered, taking a sip of cocoa to avoid answering directly.“Temporary or not, Ari, no one has the right to treat you like that.” Martha’s voice took on a protective edge, and I felt a twinge of guilt. She didn’t know the half of it.Before I could respond, a loud crash shattered the calm. The front door burst open, slamming against the wall.“What the—” Martha started, but her voice faltered as she stared at the figure standing in the doorway.
****************CHAPTER 24~Arianna’s POV~I rasped on the door and stepped, my eyes glancing around the porch as I stood, arms wrapped tightly around myself against the biting cold. The chill seeped through the thin fabric of my dress, and I shifted uncomfortably, silently praying Martha was home.Footsteps shuffled inside, and her voice called out, “Alright, alright, I’m coming!”The door opened, and Martha stood there, her eyes widening in shock as they landed on me. “Arianna?” she asked, her voice laced with disbelief. Her gaze travelled down my dishevelled appearance, lingering on my deep red dress that clung uncomfortably to my body.I looked down at myself. The dress wasn’t one I would have chosen—not in a million years. Its neckline dipped just low enough to make me self-conscious, and the slit running up the side made me feel like I was barely dressed at all. A gust of wind sent a shiver through me, emphasizing my predicament.“Goodness me, Arianna,” Martha said, her voi
****************CHAPTER 23~Arianna’s POV~My mind barely registered the words, save for warned and fumed. Each brutal hit reminded me of dark times, of the rage-filled nights when my uncle would lash out, the alcohol fueling his violence. My stomach churned, and my vision blurred with unwanted memories.I couldn’t watch anymore. I turned and ran, passing through the crowd until I burst through the warehouse doors and into the cool night air.My heart raced as I leaned against Damon’s car, trying to steady my breathing.Minutes passed before I heard his footsteps.“Arianna,” he called, his voice calm yet commanding.I didn’t answer, crossing my arms and staring at the ground. He approached, stopping a few feet away. “Look at me.”I didn’t move.Damon growled low, stepping closer and gripping my chin, tilting my face up to meet his gaze.“Don’t touch me,” I snapped, smacking his hand away. His eyes flickered with something unreadable, but he said nothing.“I hate this,” I spat, my voi
***************CHAPTER 22~Arianna’s POV~The cool night air hit me as we stepped outside, the heavy bass from the club muffled by the closed door behind us.I wrenched my arm free, glaring up at him. “What the hell was that?”“That?” he echoed, his voice dangerously calm as he turned to face me fully. “That was me keeping you from making an even bigger mistake.”“I was just dancing!” I shot back and my voice rose. “You can’t just—just storm in and punch people because you’re angry!”His lips twisted into a humorless smirk. “Oh, I wasn’t angry. Yet.”My heart skipped a beat at the dark edge in his tone. “Where are we going now?”He stepped closer, his towering presence swallowing the space between us. “To let out the anger you seem so determined to provoke.”I stared at him, my breath catching in my throat. The fire in his eyes was unnerving, but it was the restraint beneath it that sent a shiver down my spine. He turned sharply, striding toward his car parked a short distance away.
***************CHAPTER 21~Arianna’s POV~Little fire!Tsk. I did as he asked. Usually, one would have expected him to place an order for me when the waiter came over but he barely threw me a glance until now. Regardless, I was glad to be free from that boring discussion. As I slipped away from the booth, Damon’s gaze lingered on my back, sending a shiver up my spine. The nickname—little fire—still echoed in my ears, a mix of mockery and something far too intimate for my liking. I shook it off and made my way toward the bar, grateful for even a brief reprieve from his suffocating presence. The bar was crowded, the air filled with chatter and laughter, contrasting the tension in Damon’s private booth. I ordered a simple cocktail—something light and sweet to take the edge off.As I waited for the drink, I couldn’t help but glance back toward the booth. Damon was still there, listening to the men around him. One of them leaned forward, gesturing animatedly, but Damon’s attention never
***************CHAPTER 20~Arianna’s POV~The rest of the day passed in a blur. Damon didn’t return to the office, and for that, I was grateful. I buried myself in the tasks left on my desk, trying to ignore the lingering tension from our earlier encounter. But no matter how hard I tried, his words refused to leave my mind."The only man in your life is me."It was infuriating. Arrogant. Possessive. And yet... it stirred something I couldn’t quite put into words. I managed to focus on the tasks he left for me through email and got them done even though it was way harder than serving and waiting tables.By the time we returned to the penthouse, the sky was painted in streaks of orange and pink, the city glowing beneath us. I hadn’t seen Damon since we left the car, and honestly, I preferred it that way.I made my way to the kitchen, my stomach growling as I opened the fridge. There were all sorts of drinks there but I didn’t want wine or yoghurt. I wanted…My eyes lit up when I saw
