"Don't tell me that the man with the gunshot wound is your ex-lover or one of your fans in New York," Daxton walked after Eve after they finished the surgery to remove the bullet from Axel's arm.
Hell, Eve hoped Daxton was deaf or at least pretending to be so he didn't hear Axel's sentence a moment ago.
During their surgery, Daxton showed no sign that he was listening to anything, but once out of the room, he ran after Eve like a duckling missing its mother.
"My family has an industry label, but I'm not an artist." She stood at the end of the door to her room and held the door shut to prevent Daxton from entering with her.
Daxton stood awkwardly in front of her as he realized she seemed annoyed by his question. "Well, he's your ex-lover." He nodded with an annoying smile. "Does Andres know that you have a patient today who is your ex-lover?"
Eve wanted to close the door immediately and leave Daxton without saying anything, but of course, she couldn't do that. "You know what Daxton? Next time I'll let you handle your own creepy patients, and I'll never help you again." She said in a calm voice.
"What?" Daxton looked surprised, "why are you so—"
Eve didn't let Daxton finish his sentence as she closed the door with a bang that made a startling sound.
"What the hell are you doing, Eve?" Kaira raised her head and looked at her in surprise.
"Hey, Eve? Did I say something wrong?" There was a knock on the door.
Eve rolled her eyes and let Daxton stand there until he felt tired of himself.
"Is there a problem?" Kaira moved her chair closer when she saw Eve sitting down while hiding her head in her hands.
Yesterday was a crazy day, and today, she started her morning with something even crazier.
"Eve, you're worrying me with—"
"My engagement is off." She lifted her head and looked at Kaira calmly, "Last night, I saw Andres cheating on me, and I don't want to continue the engagement with a jerk like him."
Kaira raised a hand to cover her mouth while her eyes bulged perfectly.
Eve knew this was shocking news, but after all the shocking things that had happened since yesterday, she couldn't give the same reaction as Kaira.
"Eve," Kaira reached out to her, but Eve shook her head and rejected Kaira’s embrace.
"I'm tired of crying, don't make me cry again."
Kaira let out a long breath, "Alright, then what do you want me to do? Kick his dick and make sure he can never fuck anyone?"
"I'm afraid you really do," Eve breathed out, "don't do anything that could get us charged by the police, Kai. I don't want to have to deal with Andres again."
"Oh God," Kaira shook her head. "You're right. Good bye, bastard." Kaira said.
Eve put her head back down.
Honestly, she still wanted to cry.
Yesterday was the most exhausting long day of her life, and this morning, she had already gotten another surprise she had never thought she would get. She needed her notebook and started writing things down there to make a new plan after her old plan fell apart with Andres' affair and the night she lost her first experience with a strange man.
"Should I open the door and kick Daxton's ass to make him stop knocking?" Kaira muttered under her breath.
"Just do what you want to do. I just want to take a little nap here."
"Oh yes, of course you need sleep, Eve. I know you didn't sleep all night." Kaira's voice sounded as if she was concerned.
Hell, Eve was also concerned about Kaira.
Instead of not sleeping through the night, she was sleeping soundly in the bed of a stranger she met at a nightclub. And damn it, she had just met him again this morning when she had hoped they would never see each other again for good.
"I'll leave you, but you can call me whenever you want to talk." Kaira rose to her feet and patted her head three times, "You did great, Eve. I'm so proud of you."
Eve knew that Kaira had said those words because she wanted to support Eve's situation this morning. Pathetic. If only Kaira knew that what she did last night was not much different from the dirty things Andres did.
"Hey, Eve—" Daxton's voice rang out as soon as Kaira opened the door, "oh my! I want to see Eve, not you, Kai!"
"Do you think I want to see you?! I just want to kick your ass, Daxton!"
And after that, there was no sound other than their increasingly faint bickering.
Eve closed her eyes—letting her head rest on her desk and spending time there doing nothing.
She didn't sleep, and she wasn't even sleepy at all. However, she knew that there was still a long way to go until her shift. So, what should she do?
***
"Eve! I don't mean to bother you, but you should come out to see what's going on." Kaira's face appeared at the door of Eve's room a few hours after she had locked herself in there doing nothing.
She lifted her head, and she was sure her face looked a complete mess right now because she remembered that she had just spent the last few minutes crying over her asshole ex-fiancé again.
Kaira stepped in with a worried look on her face, and Eve frowned even more when she heard a faint commotion as the door to her room swung open.
"I was worried you'd—"
"Eve, why are you staying there? Andres came and messed things up!" Daxton appeared at the door shouting loudly. His words cut off Kaira's sentence, but Eve was sure that Kaira also wanted to say the same thing to her—the same topic—the same problem.
"Stupid bastard," Kaira muttered while turning her head in annoyance.
"What are you waiting for? I don't understand the problem between you. Andres forced his way into the doctor's office and made the security guards keep him outside. He's angry, and it looks like he'll still be angry if you don't come there!"
Eve tried to understand what Daxton was saying, but her mind found it difficult to comprehend.
Wait a minute, Andres?
Oh God...
Eve immediately got up and ran from her room. As soon as she came out, right at the end of the hallway connecting each doctor's private room with the reception desk in the center, she could see Andres shouting for her. As soon as he found her standing there, he tried to walk over. But of course, the security guards forbade anyone who wasn't a doctor at the hospital to enter there. This was the staff room, and Eve had just discovered that her ex-fiancé was making a mess there.
"Eve! I know you saw me, so hurry up and get here before I make another mess!" Andres shouted so loudly that it made all eyes look straight at Eve.
Oh God, as if last night's mess wasn't enough to destroy her, this time Andres also intended to destroy her work?
Since she first found out that Andres was having an affair, she hasn't felt any anger. She was just disappointed and sad. However, when she saw what Andres did this morning, the anger grew beyond her control.
From where she stood, she watched as several security guards began to push Andres away because he had just made a lot of noise and annoyed everyone. Andres rebelled and refused to be asked to leave, but of course, the security guards didn't listen to him.
There was another commotion as Andres shouted in anger at what the security guards were doing. He even called out to Eve a few times, which made the security guards get rid of him even faster because they didn't get a sign from Eve that she allowed him to come to see her.
Eve still stood there without doing or saying anything.
She felt her heart skip a beat, and she regretted running out to see how Andres humiliated her.
"What the hell is going on here?" Daxton stood behind her and muttered softly with confusion.
"You'd better go to your room, Eve. I'll have someone stand guard out front in case that jerk comes back here." Kaira took her by the shoulders and led her into her room.
Eve let out a long breath.
God, what had just happened?
She never thought that she would experience the most embarrassing thing in her entire work history.
What would the patients and her coworkers at the hospital think when they found out that her asshole fiancé had just gone crazy in front of the reception desk while she stood by like a lifeless statue?
She is not an actress who has to protect her good name from scandals that become public consumption. She was just a doctor who worked behind a scrub and a stethoscope hanging around her neck. But she was still a woman with dignity, and now Andres was doing something to mess up her good name and integrity as a doctor.
"Eve," Kaira called her name again and pulled her away.
Eve knew that some of her coworkers were starting to stare at her because they were curious about what happened. However, she knew that she couldn't give any explanation about what happened a moment ago.
What should she say?
Should she tell them that her fiancée had cheated on her and was now trying to get her back?
Hell, NO! Big no!
"I didn't think that this would happen today." Eve walked into her room and let Kaira close the door.
She sat back in her chair and rested her head on the table—just like her position a moment ago.
If she cried earlier because she still felt hurt and disappointed, this time, she wanted to cry because of the anger burning in her heart. In her entire life, this was the most... painful, sad, annoying, and embarrassing moment she had ever had.
"Who knew that jerk had lost his shame to do such a stupid thing in the hospital?" Kaira responded as she took a glass of water from the corner of the room. "Have you eaten, Eve? When was the last time you touched a spoon?"
Eve shook her head.
She couldn't remember the last time she had eaten.
The ill—effects of alcohol started to take effect from the moment she woke up for the first time, and she remembered that she missed the medicine that someone had prepared for her. So, once she got to the hospital, she took her own medicine without caring that she hadn't eaten anything.
There were some medicines that could be taken without eating, but that didn't mean she didn't need to eat anything. She still needed food... either to get energy, to keep working properly, or to cry out loud.
"Do you want me to order something?"
"You think we can order food and eat in peace after what happened earlier?" She raised her head and looked at Kaira in disbelief.
"Who cares?" Kaira picked up her phone and showed her some of the food she had ordered, "After seeing the mess, I can conclude that this won't be a one-time thing. He might come back another time or even try to harass you at your door. Anything can happen, and I want you to be prepared for it."
Eve thought Kaira's words over carefully, and her heart agreed.
If there was anyone Andres knew very well, then she was that person.
She spent two years with Andres and she understood that Andres was not a man who gave up easily.
She used to admire that character. However, now she has to be wary of Andres' ambitious attitude.
For her, there is no forgiveness if someone cheats on her.
There is no second chance for a man who tries to turn things around by letting her feel guilty about his affair.
Wasn't it Andres who broke their agreement? But why was he blaming her by using her principles and beliefs as a weapon?
"Don't take my words seriously." Kaira waved a hand in front of her face, "I know Andres won't stop coming after you to try and get you back. But whatever happens, don't ever go back to him. If you want, you can stay at my apartment for as long as you want to avoid your asshole ex-fiancé. However, I think your apartment has better security than this hospital, so Andres will never be able to access the elevator if you don't want him to."
Eve nodded, "I'm safe in my apartment." She said. "Thanks for your advice, Kai. Just so you know, I never thought about going back to him. So, don’t worry about that."
Eve knew that no matter how bad her mood was when she woke up in the morning, time would still run normally, and she would still have to do her activities according to her work schedule. No patient would wait until her mood got better after all the trouble she had been in lately. Patients come to the hospital to see doctors. And they have no obligation to understand her bad mood. So, as bad as she was this morning, Eve still forced herself to wake up on time after the night shift she got yesterday and immediately prepared to leave before 3 pm to start her afternoon shift. She hasn't been able to use her car today because she lost her car keys and hasn't had time to replace them. Maybe tomorrow morning, she'll have to swap her shift with another doctor so she can take her car that she left on the side of the road near Andres's apartment.Oh, what a bad day it would be if she thought about Andres again. Her mood is as gloomy as the Seattle sky that's starting to settle into winter at th
Eve was sick.Throughout her life, she could remember a time when she was so sick that she had to miss classes at school or college. She hated being sick. Maybe everyone hates being sick, but it seems like no one hates being sick as much as Eve does.If there are doctors and medicine in this world, why do people still have to get sick?If she was a doctor who used to treat patients, why did she still get sick?"Oh dear," Eve grumbled as she ran to the toilet to spit out the entire sandwich she had made for breakfast. She always looked miserable when she was sick, and she hated that. She had a long schedule today—her work at the hospital wasn't something she could leave behind, as well as the biology exam she couldn't attend because she had vomiting. Unfortunately, she had already gotten two days off because she was sick. And to be honest, she didn't want to increase her leave anymore."Yes, Kai?" Eve reached for her cell phone with difficulty after she decided to get back into her war
Eve didn't know how long she sat in front of her computer on the lunch hour she deliberately spent locking herself in her room. She had refused to eat lunch with Kaira, and that woman had not forced her to because she knew that Eve was not in a state where she could be forced. Her computer was still on from a few minutes ago, but she didn't feel like she wanted to continue reading any of the articles in front of her. Her eyes were tired of reading long pages about the risks of having an abortion and the risks of raising a child as a single mom working long shifts.Damn. She couldn't find a single solution to her situation. She knew that she always wanted to have children someday. But not now, of course. Not when she was in the prime of her career at the biggest hospital in Seattle. She couldn't risk her life to take care of a child. She had never had a child and had no experience living for one day with a child less than a year old. She didn't know how to bathe them, feed them, or cha
Seattle’s air was getting colder as it entered the mid-winter period. The city streets were already covered with snowflakes on both sides, and everyone had to drive more carefully if they didn't want to lose control and end up crashing into the road divider. She once lost control of her car the first year she came to Seattle. However, she is grateful that it was not a bad accident and she did not get any injuries. Her mornings have been getting worse lately, and she has asked permission to work afternoon and night shifts for the next month. She was rather lucky that she had become close friends with Daxton when he first joined the hospital. His father, who was the director of the hospital, would always listen to whatever Daxton had to say, and yesterday, Kaira had just convinced Daxton to get permission from the hospital director so Eve could work the night shift only.Eve should be either happy or upset because of the advantage. In fact, Daxton would only help her get permission if h
Eve didn't know how long she cried in silence. Her eyes began to sting, and her breathing was shortness of breath because she was crying too hard. Her hands were pale due to poor blood flow, and it seemed like it was also happening to her feet. However, nothing had changed even though minutes had passed since the two horrible men at her side forced her into the car. There wasn't any conversation, so she couldn't guess what bad things might happen to her.Eve didn't really know how long she had been trapped in the car traveling through urban Seattle. However, at this time, the car started to slow down as they entered a territory that... felt unfamiliar. There were many trees on both sides of the unpaved road. There was only dirt and some rocks that made the car shake several times. The panic in her mind grew, and she knew why.Behind the lush trees, there was a gate that looked... unkempt as she could see some vines surrounding the large gate. Then, a large house—perhaps she could call
Eve spent her senior year of high school reading and studying every medical book she could find in New York. She had been interested in medicine since she was a little girl—a doctor was the answer she always gave to anyone who asked her about her dreams. The entrance exam to medical school was a very difficult one. Even though she came from a prominent family with a lot of wealth, she couldn't use that as a guarantee to get into medical school. She had to work hard on her own. And for the first time in her life, Eve was able to accomplish something on her own—without the influence of her family's last name. However, she also realized that she might not have been able to clear her exams so easily if she hadn't had good educational facilities since she was a child. Her parents made her attend a renowned private school with the best educational facilities in New York. She had unlimited access to books and could buy anything she needed to support her learning. Money was no object, and she
Eve was not an easy person to get close to and get along with. As far as she remembered, Kaira was her only close friend, so she could trust her with some of her personal stories. However, that didn't mean she was someone who was against strangers. Since last night, she had had a lot of shocking events, or at least she had had them since last month. All of these things made it difficult for her to trust anyone—anyone. However, she had thought that she could trust Cassy and Taylor. And now she has just discovered another shocking fact. Is Eve really not allowed to trust anyone? Including herself? "Don't think of me as evil just because my husband did something bad to you. Believe me, this is not something I can control." What should she do when she discovers that the woman she thought was good to her was the wife of the man who kidnapped her? Well, Anthony didn't kidnap her directly. However, he did order three other men to kidnap her and take her as if she were a worthless prison
Eve got a tray of food at lunchtime. There were clothes in the closet, soap and bathroom stuff in the toilet, a television, a comfortable bed, a heating machine that warmed the tiles, and thick blankets. Then, the food came back to her room at later meal times.Honestly, she didn't want to eat anything—not when she had just discovered that a group of strangers had kidnapped her and their leader was keeping her in that... strange place. She didn't want to eat, but her stomach was hungry, and she knew that her baby needed something to eat after a long night without proper sleep and rest.In the end, she chose a bowl of soup, which was easier to swallow. There was a glass of juice, and she also gulped it down before she decided to sit by the window and looking at the vast yard in front of her. There were trees growing thickly as far as her eyes could see as if this place had been built in the middle of a wilderness far away from the city. This place was a fortress—a grand, gloomy buildin
Eve spent many years of her life thinking she might end up with the man who became her fiancé months ago. She never felt that there was anything wrong with her life or the plans she had laid out in her mind. Everything went normally, but perhaps she had to accept the fact that in her life, she not only had to face heartbreak but also witnessed a great betrayal that left a deep scar.Despite all the bad things that had happened in her life—loss, disappointment, pain, and sorrow that crushed her—he would never forget any of it. She would embrace every wound she had endured and carry it with her throughout her life, keeping a part of it alongside every happiness she might experience with the man she chose. And she was certain that happiness would be perfect if she spent it with Axel—together with all the flaws and scars they had faced together. The bright morning sun with white clouds adorning the blue sky was the best thing she could ask for on her happy day—one of the happiest days of
As Axel said last night, he had indeed been at her house since this morning. Eve had to admit that he woke up earlier and came to her house before she even had a chance to wake up.Well, her sleep was not as sound and easy as before—just as she thought last night. However, she managed to sleep by 3 AM, which was a decent achievement considering she once thought she couldn’t sleep until morning.“You always wake up late,” Axel teased her with a playful smile as he spread chocolate spread on his whole-grain bread. “You like chocolate spread, don’t you?” He asked while placing the bread on Eve’s plate.Eve knew her parents were quietly observing what Axel was doing. And it seemed they were also trying to find answers to their conversation last night—a conversation that was still not fully resolved.“The maid didn’t prepare much because Eve didn’t say you were coming for breakfast. If we had known, we would have prepared better.”“That’s not necessary at all, Mrs. Meadow. I like what’s pr
Eve still remembers every detail of the streets in New York even though it has been a long time since she visited her hometown. This place still remains a part of her life, although she realizes that another part of her life has settled in Seattle with all the complications she left behind. Her parents welcomed her as Axel's car entered the spacious yard of her family's mansion. There are a few details that are different from what she last remembered, but this place is still the mansion where she grew up from childhood to adulthood. She recalls every dream she once thought of as she walked through the mansion's yard. She remembers planning to leave her parents' mansion and live on her own—flying with her own wings. Now, she is no longer a teenage girl who carries a notebook everywhere to write down everything she wants to do. Now, she chooses to live freely—following whatever is in front of her and trying to get through each day with slow steps. Not because she has lost her dreams and
Axel seemed to have forgotten the last time he visited his parents' graves. He used to come here every time he visited New York on his birthday—exactly on the anniversary of his mother’s death. He would come with a single flower and place it on his mother's tombstone, leaving his father's grave empty because he didn’t know what flowers the man liked. After all, his father probably wouldn’t care about any flowers placed on his tombstone since the only thing that mattered to him was being reunited with his wife, Beatrice. However, this time, Axel did something different. Instead of a single red rose, he brought a large bouquet—something he clearly did not buy based on his own decision. And not just one but two bouquets with the same content and size as if they were intentionally made to be identical.“Ah, if Aunty Beatrice knew the mess Axel has made recently, I’m sure I’d see him scream in pain from pinching him. He deserves a spanking for troubling everyone,” Cailynn complained like a
Waking up early and starting her day ahead of her usual routine was highly unpleasant for Eve. If she could, she would have preferred to lie in bed all day, wrapped in her blanket. Sunlight was beginning to filter through the window, but she would have ignored it, keeping her eyes closed all day.Unfortunately, last night, she made a promise she couldn't break, and she had no intention of breaking it."Wait," Eve turned her head, somewhat confused, as Axel led her towards a helicopter parked on the mansion's helipad. "We're using a helicopter?""Do you mind?" Axel extended his hand and helped her into the helicopter, which was all black—a signature look for anything associated with Axel."I don't mind helicopters." She shrugged. "Aren't we taking Cailynn with us?" She furrowed her brow as Axel climbed in and sat next to her, closing the helicopter door."She's already there," Axel answered calmly. "We'll meet her later."Eve had no other questions to ask, so she remained silent in her
"It's funny because these horses look so excited when you come here and give them apples."Eve turned her head and saw Cassy walking towards her with a few apples in her hands, joining her in feeding the horses from a close distance."I often come here in the morning when I don't have work. However, they seem uninterested in my apples, whereas now I see them scrambling for a chance to get apples from your hand." Cassy extended her hand, and magically, none of the horses scrambled to eat the apples from her hand. "See? They really frustrate me, and I promise I won't come here to give them apples anymore," Cassy said while laughing briefly.Eve snorted and took the apples from Cassy's hand, then started feeding the horses. She didn't know how long she had this new habit of giving apples to the horses. However, she felt she liked this new habit very much. It felt delightful to see the horses in front of her finish the apples and water she provided."Winter is over. Don't you want to go h
If Axel had known that life would lead him to a complicated fate and life story, he might have chosen not to let himself get too deeply involved in a life he always called a duty. Whatever he did in his life, he only went through everything because he knew it was his duty. He never had the opportunity to make decisions, no one ever gave him a choice when Lucas decided to give him the leadership of the clan, no one ever asked if he liked his life full of dangers that always followed him, and no one knew if he wanted the life he was living. Everything that happened to him was what he could never decide. He got everything because it was destined for him—all the things he had to go through, even if he didn’t want them. Then, for the first time in his life, he let himself be immersed in his desires—something he longed for with all his heart and mind. Did he know that this desire would lead him to a life full of complexity? Did he know that the consequence of his desire was that he brought
Eve has loved silence her entire life—as far back as she can remember. She loved the quiet she found at her desk with piles of books and a pen in her hand. She loved the breeze that blew her hair as she spent the afternoon on her bedroom balcony with a cup of tea and a thick book on her lap. She cherished every quiet corner of her mansion, far from the hustle and bustle of New York and the paparazzi cameras. She appreciated the silence her parents offered because of their guilt over what New York society had done to her.Yes, Eve loved every definition of silence because it was the hardest thing to obtain throughout her life.Years passed, and she hoped she would find the silence—the peace she craved—once she moved from New York to Seattle with every dream and hope in her grasp. She had big plans and was confident they would succeed as long as she worked hard. However, time taught her many things, and now she understood that not everything she desired could be obtained with her hands
Axel glanced at the round watch on his right wrist—ensuring that everything was in order according to the calculations he had made over the past week.Midnight came, and there was a change of guards throughout the base. At that moment, the first assault would certainly proceed a bit easier due to their complacency. But what about the second assault? Of course, the second assault would be much easier if the first team had completed their mission."What are you doing here?"Axel turned his head when he heard Adeline's voice behind him.Adeline...Whatever crazy notion was in this woman's mind that led her to remove Andres and become the leader of the rebellion was hard to fathom. It was difficult to believe that this was the same woman who had saved him and brought him to the secret base—far from Andres' reach with no access to this territory.Compared to Andres, Adeline was much more terrifying. She harbored secrets and immense danger—something hidden behind her angelic face."Nothing,"
