CLARA

When I woke up, I was in a dimly lit room, tied to a chair. Lily was beside me, her hands bound and her face pale with fear.

“Clara,” she whispered. “What’s happening?”

I shook my head, trying to clear the fog in my mind. “I don’t know,” I said quietly. “But we’ll get out of this, Lily. I promise.”

"You promise?" She scoffed. "You brought us into this mess, Clara. We're here because of your carelessness."

I looked at her. "I asked you to run, didn't I?"

"Are you trying to put the blame on me now?" She snapped. “Weren't you the one who said it's a meeting with your friend? The last time I checked, you didn't mention anything about your uncle and his men.”

I shook my head. "I'm not blaming anyone." I explained. "And this isn't the time to blame anyone either."

Uncle Mark’s laughter echoed from somewhere nearby, sending chills down my spine. “Welcome to the real world, ladies,” he said, stepping into the light.

Lily's breathing increased and I feared she was going to explo

CLARA"Are you sure about selling your eggs?" the doctor asked as I sat in his cramped office. His voice was calm, almost too calm, as if this was just another routine day for him.I glanced at the stack of paperwork in front of me. My hands were trembling as I grabbed the pen. I didn’t want to be here. This wasn’t what I wanted for myself. But my phone buzzed again in my pocket, and I knew exactly what the message said without even looking."If you do not pay within three days, your aunt’s operation will be canceled."Three days. That was all the time I had. And I barely had enough money for food, let alone the operation fees.I sighed heavily and shoved the phone back into my pocket. Aunt Maggie’s medical bills were piling up, and the hospital wasn’t going to wait for me to figure things out.“No,” I admitted quietly, “I’m not sure about this.”The doctor’s face softened. “You don’t have to go through with it. There’s still time to back out.”Lucaa, sitting next to me, leaned forwar

I hadn’t… I couldn’t… It didn’t make any sense. My thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door.“Clara? ” Lucaa’s voice came in.“I don’t understand,” I called, my voice shaking. She walked in and shut the door behind her, her face was pale. “I need to tell you something. And you’re not going to like it.”I frowned. “What is it?”She hesitated, running a hand through her hair. “The clinic… they made a mistake.”“A mistake?” I repeated, feeling my stomach drop. She nodded, guilt written all over her face. “They did the wrong surgery. You didn’t have an egg retrieval, Clara. You had a fertilization operation.”For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. The words didn’t make sense. “What are you saying, Lucaa? That I… that I’m pregnant because of this mediacal incident?”“Yes,” she said quietly.I stared at her, m

CLARA It didn’t take long for the whispers to start. “Did you hear about Clara?” someone would say at the market. “She’s pregnant and not even married.” “She used to be so involved with the church,” another would chime in. “What a shame.” I tried to ignore it, but it was hard. The church had always been a place where I felt safe, but now, even the pastor’s wife gave me cold looks. It wasn’t long before I stopped going altogether. Every Sunday morning, I would hear the church bells ringing, and my chest would ache. But I reminded myself that I didn’t need their approval. My focus was on my baby. At my next antenatal check-up, Lucaa smiled as she looked at the screen. “The baby’s growing well,” she said, pointing at the little shape on the monitor. “It’s ten weeks now and stable.” I couldn’t help but smile. Seeing the baby made everything feel real. But then Lucaa’s expression turned serious. “Clara, it’s still not too late to think about your options. You can choose t

CLARA The blinding white light of the hospital room made my head pound as I slowly opened my eyes. My body felt heavy, and my limbs refused to cooperate. The events of last night rushed back, leaving a sinking feeling in my stomach. Before I could sit up, my uncle’s angry voice filled the room. He was pacing, muttering to himself, his face covered with anger. “You’ve ruined everything!” he spat, spinning around to face me. “Pregnant? You’re pregnant?” I didn’t respond. My throat was dry, and my heart was pounding so fast. “For all the years I’ve put up with you, this is how you repay me? You’ve destroyed everything!” His voice grew louder as he stepped closer to the bed. “What are you talking about?” I managed to croak, my voice barely audible. "What am I talking about, huh?" He leaned over me, I could perceive the smell of alcohol reeking from his breath. “I'm talking about this bastard in your womb. You're getting it out as soon as possible." "Uncle Mark..." Be

CLARAHe stood there, his cold, dark eyes were now fixed on my uncle, who stood frozen like a cornered rat. My uncle wasn't expecting to see him, no one was. At this point, Uncle Mark left me completely, taking a step forward with something he called… boldness.“I’m from the Iron Fang Syndicate gang,” my uncle blurted out, trying to sound tough but failing miserably. “You better leave if you know what’s good for you!” The man—Mateo, I remembered—tilted his head slightly, having this unreadable expression. Then he spoke again, his deep voice sending chills down my spine. “This woman owes me,” he said, gesturing toward me. “She’s not going anywhere without my permission.” Uncle Mark shifted his gaze at me, and before my uncle could respond, Mateo took a step forward. His men fanned out, surrounding the room. I could feel the tension that came with it. It was suffocating. “What are you talking about?” my uncle stammered, walking steps backward. CLARA I woke up to the sound of low voices murmuring nearby. My body ached, and my head felt heavy as I blinked against the harsh light streaming into the room. As my vision cleared, I noticed two men sitting by my bedside, dressed in expensive suits and wearing a serious expression that immediately put me on edge.“Good, you’re awake,” one of them said, a little softly. He was holding a folder, and the sight of it made my stomach twist.“Who are you?” I managed to ask, feeling my throat run dry.“We work for Mr. Mateo De Luca,” the man replied, as if that explained everything. “He asked us to give this to you.” He handed me the folder, and I hesitated before taking it. I could feel my hands trembling as I opened it, revealing a thick stack of papers inside. “What is this?” I asked, not taking my gaze off the folder in my hand.“It’s your employment contract,” the man said plainly. “For the next two years, you will work as Mr. De Luca’s personal doctor. CLARA The day I was discharged from the hospital felt like a dream. I was still trying to process everything that had happened, but it seemed like the world wasn’t waiting for me to catch up. As I sat on the hospital bed for the last time, a man dressed in a sleek black suit entered the room. He looked expensive and intimidating, but his expression was calm. “This is for you,” he said, handing me a brand-new phone. I stared at it for a moment. “I don't understand." I stammered, not sure if I understood why everything seems to be happening so fast. "What’s this for?” “Boss wants to talk to you,” he simply replied, giving no room for arguments.I took the phone reluctantly and held it to my ear. “Hello?” Mateo's voice came through from the other end of the line. “Clara.” I swallowed nervously. “Yes?” “I’ve arranged for a driver to take you wherever you need to go,” he said, as though he hadn’t just turned my entire life upside down. “If you don’t want to go back to your unc

CLARA The drive felt longer than usual, with the quiet hum of the car and my restless thoughts. I didn't want to come, but the urgency in the text was something I couldn't ignore. Worse, it had to do with aunt Maggie.I'd look at Lily with my side eyes after every six seconds. Her mind and focus was on the road, like she didn't notice I was in the car with her. The calmness of the atmosphere felt uncomfortable so I suddenly wanted her to say something. Even if it were a curse word."You didn't give me a location," She said, and I was grateful she did ask because I forgot to mention it."Uhm..." I searched my message box, trying to recall the location Lucaa had sent me. "Bella Luna." I told her."I thought you said it was an emergency for your aunt," She glanced at me for a second before staring at the road. "What are you doing in a restaurant?""I did say it's concerning my aunt, I never said I wanted to see her." She looked at me again, "I'm going to meet my friend concerning my aun

CLARA“She’s pregnant with your child, Mateo. You need to father up!”I stood frozen outside the study door, my breath caught in my throat. I had no idea what to do, if I should run or just keep listening. However, my curiosity wouldn’t let me leave so soon.“I’ve already done what you said,” I heard him say. “I went with her today, and I’ll go with her again whenever I can.” There was a pause before his mother responded. “Good. That’s the least you can do, Mateo. She’s carrying your child, and she needs your support.” I didn’t hear what he said next because my mind was already spinning. So that’s why he showed up today. It wasn’t because he wanted to; it was because his mother told him to. The joy I’d felt earlier began to slip away, replaced by a heavy weight in my chest. I stepped back quietly, careful not to make a sound, and went to my room. I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at my hands. The earlier warmth I’d felt, thinking Mateo had come because he cared, now felt like a

CLARAI always visited the clinic twice every month. It was the second time of the month and I feel so lonely to be here. Lucaa was supposed to drive me here like she always does, but work seems to get the better part of her while I had to get my ass all the way here myself. The waiting room wasn’t as crowded today. I sat quietly, with my hands resting on my growing belly, staring at the wall clock as if willing the time to move faster. The door to the clinic swung open, and I barely glanced up. It wasn’t until I heard a familiar voice that I froze. “Clara,” Mateo called and my eyes flew open. He didn’t say anything about showing up.I turned in disbelief, and there he was, striding toward me like he owned the place. His presence was impossible to ignore, even in the plainest suit. “Mateo?” I asked, standing slowly. “What are you doing here?” He stopped in front of me with his hands in his pockets, looking calm but serious. “I’m here for your appointment.” I blinked at him, compl

CLARAI’ve always thought with everyday that passes by, I was a step closer to finding the truth. However, I was wrong, I was never anyway closer. To make matters worse, life with Lily haven’t been pretty so far. It keeps getting bitter by day, and for a thousand reason, I just wanted to escape her life. But as long as she’s here, that was one impossible thing I can ever get.The morning sun streamed through the windows of the villa as I stepped into the dinning room. Lily was already there, sitting at the head of the table as though she owned the place. Her perfectly styled hair and her tailored dress gave her an air of superiority that she never failed to wield against me.“Good morning,” I greeted softly, constantly reminding myself who she was to Mateo. A childhood savior as he said.Lily barely glanced at me. “You’re late,” she said curtly, sipping her tea. “Breakfast is almost over.”I bit back a sigh and moved to pour myself a cup of coffee. “I didn’t know there was a set time,

MATEOThe office was quiet except for the soft ticking of the clock on the wall, and the low hum of the ceiling fan mixed with the faint crackle of my cigar as I leaned back in my chair, my eyes fixed on the city lights glowing outside the window. It’s been a rough week, and I had barely had a good night’s sleep. Even with Clara lying next to me, I couldn’t get myself to close my eyes. Maybe that’s because I feel defeatedI softly tapped my fingers on my desk, letting my mind swirl through countless thoughts I couldn’t get myself to think of. They were just too much that I could barely focus.A knock broke the silence, snapping me out of my thoughts.“Come in,” I said, without asking who it was.The door opened, and three of my men stepped inside. They stood straight and saluted me. I could tell from the seriousness on their face that they had something important for me.“Boss,” one of them said, stepping forward.“What is it?” I asked, taking a slow puff from my cigar.Marco hesita

LILYI was so thirsty and needed something to drink. It was my routine to always have a glass of water or soft drinks with me in my room before I went to bed, but for some reasons I couldn’t tell why I forgot this time.I left my room to the kitchen, then, I began to hear faint voices., and they were two of them. I recognized one to be the butler’s voice, while the other was… Clara? What was she still doing out here by this time of the night? And what’s with the whispering voices I hear?I hid in a corner, stressing my ears to hear what they were discussing. I couldn’t get what it was they were talking about, but I sure did hear her mention a ‘cross’. What cross could they be talking about, that of the De Luca family? If that’s so, what’s her business with the cross and its significance? Well, I’ll get to know what it was with the whispering voice as soon as she’s out of here.I heard footsteps retreating from the kitchen and heading toward the staircase. I needed to hide myself or sh

CLARADisappointed! That’s all I could feel right now, and if there was any word other than that, that’s how I feel. I was one step closer to finding the truth, just one step, and everything crumbled.“Urgh!” I grunted, slapping my forehead. “Come on, Clara, you went too far.”Maybe I thought too much. Maybe I was too quick to jump to a conclusion, maybe I should have thought even harder before thinking the necklace was Mateo’s. I sat back on the couch, staring at my tea. I had lost the appetite to drink it anymore, the reason I had stayed up this late was ruined.I quickly phoned Lucaa, thankfully she was awake to answer. “Clara, any news?” she asked. “Were you able to find out?”I shook my head as if she were here with me “You’re right, Lucaa, I had the dumbest idea ever.” I hated myself for even thinking my assumption was right this whole time.“I… I don’t think I understand what you’re trying to say.” She said, “You mean Mateo isn’t the real owner of the necklace?”“He’s just retu

CLARAI couldn’t get myself to sleep, so I stayed awake throughout the night. Mateo was troubled, and the frustration in the way he breathed was suffocating. Not quite long after the call, he stormed out of the room like I wasn’t even there.I wanted to call Lucaa, to tell her what I think about Dominic, but when I checked the time, it was too late to make calls. “I’ll definitely tell her tomorrow.” I thought to myself.Morning came just as I expected. Mateo had left the house sooner, the case on ground wasn’t something he could let go. However, his concern could mean two things, either he didn’t want to lose Dominic, or just the fact that it’s something about the mafia world: “Never to watch your family die without a cause.”Then I met Lily sitting in the dining. Could there ever be a time I wouldn’t have to meet her like this? Especially not in the morning? For the first time, she didn’t seem interested in me.
