CHAPTER 2
3 Weeks Later. The officer has a firm grip on my arm as he tugs me out of the station. I struggle to pull my arm from his tight hold and try to dig my feet into ground, which doesn’t help much as I continue to be dragged forward. “I just want some answers okay? And I won’t bother you guys anymore.”, I yell at him through gritted teeth as I continue to twist in his grip. His fingers establish a biting hold on my arm as he makes sure that I'm unable to wiggle away. So much for the police being your friend. I’m unceremoniously tossed towards to ground but I catch myself, the gravel digging into painfully into my palms. I dust my hands and knees as I stand. I glare up at him and place my hands on my hips. “That’s not the way to treat a tax paying citizen”, I spit at him, he rewards me with a dry look. “Ma’am, you can’t keep causing a scenes everytime you come here.” He sighs in exasperation as he runs his palm over his face. He plants his feet sturdier on the ground as if he’s bracing to grab me in case I make a run for it into the station. Which is understandable as I’ve done that several times. “Look officer...” I trail off as I squint at his name on his uniform “Lannister”, he supplies gruffly “Right. Officer Lannister. I just want to know more about the investigation on my cousin’s murder, then I’ll be out of your hair.” His face remains stoic, “As you’ve been told ma’am, there have been no current leads and we’re doing everything we can.” “I know that, but can I just look at the case files? You may need some fresh eyes.” I say, with what I hope is an imploring look. “I assure you that we have all the fresh eyes we need. If anything else turns up you will be notified.” He concludes, turning away as he starts taking determined steps back to the station. I jolt as the memory hits me. "Kaiden Nikolaou", I yell to his retreating figure He comes to an abrupt stop and marches towards me. The sudden of it makes me stumble back. "What did you just say?", he demands with a rigid posture. "Kaden Nikolaou", I stammer "Who is he?", I ask firmly , straightening my shoulders and lifting my chin so I maintain eye contact. He grabs my arm and starts pulling me towards the station. "Hey, hey! You can't just throw me around whenever you please" He ignores me and I'm brought into the building. My eyes roam the bustling interior once more. Printers humming in the background, the rustle of paper being passed around combined with the insistent chatter of different cops. I shove out of the way, avoiding an incoming group of police men and women moving with urgency in their steps. I try to glimpse as much as I can which isn't a lot considering I don't know what I'm looking for exactly. I am then brought into a huge office. The smell of coffee and paperwork permeats the air, making it a little stuffy. The hard wood floor and the dark wood desks and chairs give it a sophisticated look. I browse my eyes taking it all in. "Lannister, I hope there is an explanation for you dragging this woman into my office." My eyes find the owner of the voice. A middle aged woman. Her brown hair is streaked with silver and gathered into a bun and her intelligent, shrewd eyes peer at me throw her glasses. "She knows Kaiden Nikolaou", Lannister states. "Okay, know is a stretch. I only said his name. But judging from your reactions, he seems like a big deal." I quip. "Cassidy Perez, head detective", she says as she comes out from behind her desk. She stops in front of me and extends her hand for a handshake. "Well I'm glad someone has some manners around here." I joke, giving her a handshake. "Daisy Jones" Interest sparks in her eyes "Ahh, so you're Daisy that's been harassing my officers", a hint if amusement dances in her eyes. I wince as I recall my previous behaviour of badgering the officers, sometimes even following them around. I've been tossed out one too many times. I laugh awkwardly. Lannister glares at me from over her shoulder but I avoid his gaze. I'm led to one of the chairs. I sit and relax into it, tension seeping out of my body as I note it's comfortability. "So, you mentioned Kaiden Nikolaou", she says leaning forward, her fingers steepled under her chin. I bring out the picture I found in Callum’s notebook and offer it to her. "I found it among Callum’s things, and I want to know who he is. Do you think it will help with the investigation of his murder?" I enquire eagerly. Cassidy stares at the picture, her brows are pinched in concentration. The head detective and officer Lannister share a look above my head. Feeling the sudden tension, I whip my head between the both of them anxiously. "What?", my chair creaks as i scooch to the edge of my seat, my fingers gripping the armrests. My voice increases as I ask "Who is he?" Cassidy clears her throat, "Kaiden Nikolaou is a... complicated individual. Let's say he has a certain influence in this city." Her face arranges itself into a hard mask. "And beyond this city." Lannister adds. "Okay... so he's a business man, politician or?", I trail off Cassidy releases a sigh, that doesn't loosen the rigidity from her shoulders, "He's into organised crime", she states The ensuing silence is so thick that I feel it suffocate me. My heartbeat echoes in my ears and I struggle to breathe as air gets trapped in my throat. "Excuse me?", I manage to blurt out "So what? He's a crime lord? Is that what your saying?", I force myself to take slow deeper breaths as my mind goes through all the dangerous possibilities of exactly who Kaiden Reed might be. "Callum was an accountant. He had nothing to do with those sort of people." I continue, firmly. Callum who never let me take an extra gummy bear when we shared a packet, was into organised crime? Give me a break. I roll my eyes internally at the ridiculousness of the whole thing. "Apparently not." Lannister comments from behind me, I quickly whip around and pin him with an icy stare which he returns. "Look, I'm not trying to alarm you Daisy. I'm just giving you the answers you sought. We keep tabs on what goes on in New York , and Kaiden Reed has a lot of influence here." Cassidy explains I laugh scornfully at the irony of the police telling of the influence of a crime lord. "Wow, so what's your job exactly? Are you guys just a figurehead to satisfy us civilians while the big, bad wolves run the show?", I grit out letting my anger show through my voice "It's not an ideal situation, but we do keep them under control to an extent." She regards me through narrowed eyes, her displeasure clear "Gee thanks, I've never felt safer" sarcasm drips from my tongue. Cassidy's eyes flash with annoyance, she takes a deep, steadying breath and drops the photo onto the table that separates us. The silence stretches between us and I struggle to find words to fill it. I get out of the chair and pace behind it, narrowly avoiding bumping into Lannister as I do so. I time my breath with my footsteps. My shoes making a staccato beat on the floor. " Okay, let's say he was one of Callum’s clients, I'm sure he didn't know Kaiden Nikolaou was involved in the mafia. But then, maybe he found out and Kaiden had him killed." I smack my palms together, and turn sharply to Cassidy with a triumphant grin of my face. "There, we have our killer, go get him." I insist "There's no proof, Daisy." "You have all the proof there is, he's a crime lord." I emphasize. "That's not how it works. He's a very intelligent man Daisy. He isn't sloppy. Plus there's no evidence of his involvement in your cousin’s murder." Cassidy says, her voice laced with compassion. My breath whooshes out of my chest and my body suddenly feels heavy. I stumble and grab the edge of my seat, steadying myself. My knuckles turn white as my grip tightens and I feel tears sting the corners of my eyes. "So there's no hope then." I rasp dejected "We'll look into it Daisy, this provides a new lead for us. Thank you for bringing it here." Although I hear the strength in her tone as she tries to communicate her gratitude, weariness seeps into my being. I nod, my head giving a jerking motion as if I'm held by strings. I straighten my knees, grab the picture and leave her office. Behind me I hear Lannister trailing behind me. I exit the station. As I step out into the hot afternoon sun, the hot air only adds to the suffocating feeling in my chest. The constant hum of car horns and chatter of a bustling city fill the background. The air is permeated is with the smell of petrol and asphalt. I breathe it all in. I flit through the information I know. Callum is dead. Kaiden Nikolaou is involved and the police pose little to no help. To find out more about the death of my cousin, I have to go to the source. The link I just discovered, Kaiden Reed. Later, as I get ready for bed. I get a text message.CHAPTER 3I sit at the counter, my hands wrapped around a mug of coffee. I rub my palms on the surface of the mug, feeling the heat seep into my palms.I unlock my phone, it opens straight to message from last night. The contact unknown.Blackbird Casino. 9pm. Formal wear. There was also an attachment of pictures showing Kaiden Nikolaou, entering and exiting the casino at different hours. In the pictures, his face is arranged in a stoic mask, his gaze pointed forward. He's cute...too cute for a criminal. He could've easily been a model, why go for organised crime.Seems like he has a thing for coats, as in every picture he's wrapped in one.I can't imagine wearing a coat all day in this summer heat, but do you I guess.I spent the night wracking my brain on who this unknown contact could be. Hardly getting any sleep as I wondered if I would actually go to the Casino.Spoiler alert. I still haven't made up my mind.Shoving it to the back of mind, I stand up from my seat. Placing my mug
CHAPTER 4.Kaiden's POV:My meeting is rudely interrupted by the door slamming open. A woman rushes in, closing the door behind her.Her gold dress shimmers on her form, illuminating her brown skin as it caresses the curves of her body.I hear her mutter underneath her breath. Around me, my men are frozen in shock. Some are on their feet, their hands poised over their guns, others are seated their face tense.I remain in my seat wondering how this tiny woman was able to evade my guards and find this room. She suddenly stiffens, no doubt hearing the shuffling of my men. Watching her turn slowly, I drag my gaze up her form. The flare of her hips, the dip of her waist.I follow the slender curve of her neck till I find myself locked in a gaze with her.She tears her eyes from mine and her gaze flit around the room. Sweeping over my men, lingering on their guns and poised positions. "Can I help you?", I ask, my voice low and even. I slowly rise to my feet, pinning her with a hardened gaze
CHAPTER 5Daisy's POV:I stand outside Paragon Real Estate, another branch of Kaiden's empire. I must be out of my mind doing this considering I witnessed him kill a man last night, but I guess when you escape such a close call you become a bit reckless. On the bright side, I'm closer to finding out the truth about Callum than I was last week.Straightening my shoulders, I adopt a purposeful stride as I pass through the revolving doors of the building. The hum of activity envelops me. The sharp fluorescent lights illuminate the cubicles and flurry of movement within. The scent of coffee and printer ink greet my nose as I look across the office.I weave through the desks and passing workers and approach a serious looking man who types determinedly at his keyboard."Good morning", I offer him a smile. It goes unnoticed as he remains focused on his computer."I'd like to look at some properties", I increase my voice in the hopes of gaining his attention. He looks up, his face in an annoy
Daisy's Pov:I slowly come to, my head throbbing and my mouth dry. Peering through a blurry vision I take in my surroundings.I'm in a luxurious bedroom, the curtains are thick and drawn, shrouding the room in shadows. The air is heavy with the scent of expensive perfume and polished wood.I wince as I sit up on the huge bed, swallowing back my nausea. I recall the previous night's events: a handkerchief being pressed into my nose and falling unconscious onto a warm body.Kaiden Nikolaou. The door opens, a maid walks in carrying a tray. The scent of the food tickles my nose and there's a corresponding grumble from my stomach.Noticing I'm awake, she quickly places the tray on the side table and scurries out. I look at the bottle of water placed beside the food, gulping around my parched throat.I don't trust it, it could be drugged. Tearing my eyes away from it, I throw my feet over the bed and stumble towards the door. The door opens, and Kaiden walks in."Hm, you're already on you
Daisy:I pace back and forth in my room. Not mine, Kaiden's. I figured it out when I was snooping and I pulled open a drawer full of Calvin Klein underwear, I roll my eyes at the memory. He hasn't come back here since that first visit and it's been three days, I wonder where he sleeps. I shake the thought out of my head. I shouldn't be wondering where the asshole lays his head. The door unlocks and the maid comes in. There's a routine to this. She comes in, drops food off and clothes which happen to be my perfect size, tidies up a little and scurries off.I've tried talking to her but it's either she's ignoring me or she doesn't speak a lick of English."Good morning ", I tell her with fake cheerShe gives me a fleeting glance and goes back to straightening out the bed."Your boss can't just keep me here you know, people will look for me"Again, nothing. All I'm rewarded with is a dry look she aims at me from over her shoulder."Seems like he's forgotten I'm here already, after all th
Kaiden:I step out of the car onto the damp asphalt. The salty tang of seawater and diesel filling my nose.I take in the tangled mess of overturned containers and abandoned vehicles. Part of my security team is already here digging through the mess.Spotting Andreas I head towards him."What do we know?" I ask."Not much yet", he replies in a resigned tone. " It was highjacked at about 3 am. Luckily, no one was killed just a bit bruised up. But there was no sign of forced entry. "My eyes narrow at this information. "An inside job, again.""You know, this isn't looking too good for you, Andreas," I inform him."Being the head of security and all", I add sarcastically. Andreas's expression is neutral but I notice a flicker of distress in his eyes."I understand your concerns, Sir. But be rest assured that I'm just as shocked at this as you are.""Hm"I turn to Alex, who has been watching the exchange with thinly veiled amusement."Send me the security footage. And question the guard
Kaiden:I step out of my shower to find my tablet in Daisy's hands."You know, you keep implicating yourself. For someone who swears she has no idea what's going on." I tell her as I make my way towards my closet.Pulling out a pair of basketball shorts and a shirt. Turning around, I watch her avert her gaze as I pull on the clothes."Nothing to say?" I bait her.She places the device beside her and keeps her eyes pinned away.Frustrated by her silence I head to the bed and climb in. Keeping my eyes fixed on her form on the couch."You weren't lying, were you? He did steal from you." She says quietly.I don't answer. I keep watching her as she buries her face into her hands. Her shoulders are slumped. The defeat in her posture irks me. I'm used to her kicking and screaming not this resigned version of her.Sighing I stand up from the bed and make my way towards her. She stiffens and peeks up at me from between her fingers.Pulling her hands from her face, I tug her to her feet and lea
Daisy:I snuggle deeper into my pillow. Digging my nose into it and inhaling its citrusy scent. It moves beneath me. I pause, confused by that. Determined to ignore it, I burrow deeper and start to slip back into a dream state. It moves again, this time arms come around me and I'm pressed deeper into it. A rumbling snore sounds beneath my head.Wait.Drowsily, I open my eyes and peer beneath myself. Blank ink spirals from underneath my cheek. Pale skin stretches over a mouthwatering chest. My heart skips a beat as I realise I'm lying on top of Kaiden. I pull away slowly, trying my best not to wake him up. His arms tighten around me, holding me in place. He stirs, his eyes fluttering open. We stare at each other. Him with confusion, me with embarrassment. I can't believe I cuddled up against him. Then, his expression changes, and he looks at me with an expression of surprise and annoyance."What are you doing?" He growls, his voice rough from sleep."Trying to get out of bed," I tell h
CHAPTER 18: Kaiden: I stand in the doorway of the apartment staring at Daisy over her friend's head. My gaze sweeps over her, taking in her thighs and the shorts that cling to her hips. The thin tank top she wears outlines her curves. My eyes linger on her hair, it forms a halo around her face. Daisy's eyes are wide with surprise as she takes in my form. My lips twitch into a smile but I quickly repress it. Did she think I won't find her? I still don't understand how she managed to make it out of the house and I have some questions about that. Due to our time together, I had forgotten the fact that she's a suspect. I won't forget it again. "Daisy? Who is this?" Her friend asks. She has placed herself in front of me to block me from entering; not that she's much of a barrier. It wasn't hard to find Daisy, given my resources. She left with no money and barefooted, she would've needed someplace to stay. That left either Aunt Mercy or Stacy Tupas and from the report I got fro
Daisy:Three Days Ago:Stacy, my best friend, stares at me in shock from the doorway of the convenience store.I raise my hand, giving her a limp wave and an awkward smile. She rushes to me, her sneakers squeaking against the floors and wraps me in a tight hug. My throat closes up as I hug her back, resting my chin on her shoulder."Where have you been?" She whispers harshly in my ear. "We've been worried sick, Daisy." I hear her sniffle. "I literally filed a police report." She leans back, grasping my shoulders in her hand and shakes me. Her eyes search mine as she waits for an answer."I just had to get away." I mumble, trying to justify my absence."With Callum’s death being so mysterious and the police doing absolutely nothing about it... I just felt so helpless, Stacy." My chest tightens as I lie to her but I can't possibly tell her the truth, i don't want to put her in danger. Plus, I'm not sure she'd believe me; the truth sounds so far fetched.Stacy wraps me in another hug,
Kaiden:I crack open my eyes, wincing at the brightness of the room. My gaze is unfocused and I blink once, twice, to shake off the bleariness. There's a heaviness in my head and my thoughts are muddled. I lift a shaky hand to my head, flinching when there's a stiff pull at my side.Taking in my room, I try to remember how I got here. Fragments begin to surface, the sound of gunfire, an armband, searing pain in my head and my side and the sensation of being carried. The casino ambush. Right.Steeling myself against the pain, I sit up on my bed and my body protests with a wave of dizziness. I close my eyes and wait for it to clear.Gazing down at my body, I take in the bandages wrapped around my arm and my side. Slowly lifting my hand, I trace the source of the throbbing in my head. My fingers graze the stitches that cut across my forehead.Sighing, I lean my head onto the headboard to catch my breath. My eyes move towards the door as it opens. Alex peeps into the room, his eyes wideni
Daisy:Alex ignores me as he enters the room laying Kaiden on the bed.Kaiden's face is pale and his skin is clammy. A wave of fear washes over me and my heart sinks." The doctor's on his way, watch him. I'll be right back." Alex says then he rushes out of the room.I watch as Kaiden takes shallow breaths and his eyes move frantically beneath the lids. My eyes remain pinned on his chest, counting his breaths to stay calm even as my mind races with worst-case scenarios. The door is thrown open again and Alex walks in trailed by a man carrying a briefcase.I move out of the way taking trembling steps towards the couch and lower myself into it.I watch in dazed silence as Kaiden's shirt is removed from the wound at his side. Kaiden's eyes fly open and he lets out a pained gasp, arching off the bed, and Alex has to hold him down as the doctor works. He passes out again soon after. The doctor leaves after hooking an IV drip to Kaiden, and packing up his equipment, Alex trails off after hi
5 Hours Earlier Kaiden: I step out of the car, my eyes fixed on the entrance of my casino. I was already running late and Andreas's urgent call only added to my frustration. The usually bustling casino is quiet, the only sound is the soft hum of slot machines. I spot Andreas waiting for me, his expression grim. "What's going on?" I asked, my voice low and urgent. I toss my suit jacket, accepting the gun he stretches out to me. Tucking it into my belt, I strap on a bulletproof vest. I carefully lift the AK-47 from the duffel bag, my hands moving with practised ease. Sliding the sling over my shoulder and adjusting it to fit comfortably. The weight of the rifle settled against my back, a reassuring presence. Lastly, I secure the armband with a phi symbol on it for identification. "The mole sabotaged the casino, we've got multiple hostiles on the upper floors." Andreas supplies. "What went wrong?" I inquire angrily. "He hacked into the security system. That's how w
Daisy: It's silent now, my ears ringing in the aftermath of it all. The gunshots and screams have stopped but I remain in the hallway too scared to move. I wrap my shaking arms around myself as I remain crouched on the floor with my back pressed to the wall. Where's Kaiden? Is he hurt? My heart pounds in my chest as I take deep breaths to calm myself down, pressing my hands to my mouth to muffle my sobs. The door at the end of the hallway opens slowly. I press myself deeper into the wall in a bid to appear smaller. My chest feels like it's constricting, like a vice is squeezing the breath out of me. I couldn't move, couldn't think. I watch as a figure moves into the hallway, squinting to make out his identity. "Daisy" I let out a sigh of relief as the Russian accent registers in my mind. "Ivan?" I ask, my voice shaky. He walks towards me and crouches so we are at the same level. "Are you okay? I've been looking for you." Ivan tells me. I peer over his should
Kaiden:Chaos erupts. Shouts ring out as bullets rain from above, the sounds echoing off the walls.People throw themselves to the ground, taking cover under the sparse tables available. The air is filled with the smell of gunpowder. What idiot brought a gun to the Palace? This is a neutral ground and this quarterly dinner is a way to forge alliances.Without our weapons and bodyguards, we're left open to this attack. The lights have plunged us into a red haze, making it impossible for me to see a few feet in front of me.Some of the Dons are guarding their wives and significant others, their bodies forming a shield around them.We are all crouched on the floor, unsure of where the shots are coming from. Someone's trigger-happy, but even amid the chaos I notice that no one has been hit.The top echelon of crime is in this room and no one wants to make a stupid mistake that will lead to an all-out war.My mind is racing.Fuck. Where's Daisy? I scan the crowd but it's like looking for a
Daisy:We're in the car, headed to God knows where. Kaiden didn't reveal anything about where we're going, a fact that's been annoying me since we left the boutique. After tagging along with him to check on shipments and waiting in receptions during his meetings, I thought that would be the end of the day.Wrong.Instead, here I am in a dress and heels going to an undisclosed location. Well, I'm not too mad at the outfit though. The shimmering material feels like silk on my skin and flows down my body like a wave. The gold straps of my heels wind around my calf in a surprisingly comfortable way. I catch my reflection in the car window. My braids are in a bun at the top of my head and the makeup accentuates my features.Kaiden sits across from me, but I ignore him as I've been doing since we left the last location. I feel his heavy gaze as he waits for me to acknowledge his presence."We're headed to Vitalis Palace." His voice comes as a low murmur.Vitalis Palace, the epitome of exclu
