Valentina.

"It's now or never."

I had no idea where my mother was residing, but Isabella definitely thought she was still in our old mansion because she drove us there in a secret car from her secret apartment garage.

There was so much I did not know about my sister.

Isabella had remained quiet beside me during the drive, the occasional clench of her jaw or a glance toward me was the only sign that she was equally tensed.

We weren't taking an easy task.

Our mother, Gloria Russo, was no simple woman. She had always been the master manipulator, weaving stories and controlling our lives. Plus, I knew she was still mad because I never helped her with Giovanni and our father's case.

But I hoped that beneath the icy exterior, there might be some plausible explanation for why she did what she did.

Something to help me see my mother as something more than a monster.

Isabella pulled the car to a stop in front of the Russo mansion, the massive iron gates opening slowly as we were waved inside.

"You’ll take Isabella’s place, Valentina. There’s no other choice."My mother's words echoed in my mind as I stood before the gates of the Nevarro Estate, the world as I knew it crumbling beneath my feet. The gates groaned as they opened, a shiver tracing down my spine."Your sister is gone. Disappeared without a trace. The little wretch took all the money we had, too."The estate was every bit as grand and imposing as I'd imagined, a testament to the wealth and power of the Nevarro family. But there was nothing coming about it.It was a fortress, and I was its latest prisoner."Marry Matteo Nevarro. Have his heirs, and nothing would ever happen to you again."I had never been here before, not even when my father had to come because of his little business with the former Don.Mom always kept me away, insisting that it was unnecessary to let him know he had two daughters. It had been Isabella, who was promised to Matteo Nevarro, not me.Never me.But with Isabella gone, I had to step u

"Good morning, Mrs Nevarro."I screamed. As loud as I could and for all to hear."Mrs Nevaro!!!!"The first rays of dawn seeped through the heavy curtains, casting a dull light across the room. And a lady was staring down at me.Where was I? "Mrs Nevarro!!!" She tried again, and then it all came back to me.Matteo Nevarro, the wedding, the wing. His love for my sister. It was like a never ending dream. My prison.I had barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Matteo's blue eyes staring at me with a cold and calculating gaze, the weight of his expectations pressing down on me.And now this lady. She was tall and elegant, dressed in a sleek blue dress, her hair pulled back into a neat bun. A tray filled with breakfast - fresh fruit, pancakes, and a cold cup of juice - was at my bedside table."Good morning, Mrs Nevaro." She said, her voice polite but distant. "I'm glad you've stopped screaming. I'm Caterina, Mr Nevaro asked me to assist you with anything you might need during

Matteo"She's beautiful."Black had always been my favourite colour. Hidden. Silent. Deadly.I felt at home with it, like siblings whose bonds grew stronger every day.Yet in the span of a second, Valentina had upended that as she had every other thing in my life.Heat poured down my body as Valentina mixed various colours in a flat disk, creating a mixture to paint across the canvas. She was colour and chaos, a whirlwind of unpredictable energy I should have stayed away from.I hated it.I hated how she made me question everything. How she made me wish I didn't give up on my search. And I hated how much I wanted her.She wasn't supposed to be mine. She wasn't supposed to be anyone’s.But fate had always been cruel. The art gallery in the estate was small, almost quaint, but it had become a place of refuge for her. A sanctuary where she could lose herself and hide from Caterina, I guessed.Isabella had been the brain behind the idea. She thought it would be nice for me to have a plac

Valentina."You have to learn the names of everyone that would attend. Who likes who, who hates who."The days blurred together in a haze of unfamiliar routines and uneasy silence.Caterina, true to Maverick words, was always nearby, guiding me through each task like with a strict efficiency even my mom never had. She left no room for conversation. "Isn't that too much? Who they liked or who they hated? How am I supposed to learn that?" I asked. She gave no reply. The next day, a large book on the history of the Nevarros was lying beside me, and I had to learn about each member of the family.By the time the evening of the first event I was supposed to attend with Matteo arrived, I was well grounded on almost everyone in the mafia world.I was also numb.It felt easier that way. Like I was an actress playing a role, that this wasn't my life. However, standing in front of the mirror in my room, dressed in an elegant black gown that hugged my body in all the right places, I understood

Matteo.*I'm sorry. I had to save Isabella myself.*Those words were the only thing written in the note she left on the pillow for me.The walls of the safe house felt like they were closing in, suffocating me with their silence.I paced back and forth across the worn wooden floor, my fists clenched at my sides at frustration built up inside me.Valentina wasn't here. She hadn't been here for three days now.And every minute that passed without me knowing where she was felt like a slow descent into madness.Where the hell was she?"Where is she?" I growled for what felt like the hundredth time, directing the question at Ethan, who stood by the window, staring into the night. His expression was neutral, which only infuriated me more. How could he be so calm when Valentina was missing?"I don't know." He said quietly, his tone far too causal for my liking."Fuck." I ran a hand through my hair, tugging at the strands as if the pain would somehow clear the chaos in my mind. "I had no idea

Valentina."Run, Valentina. Run."The wind howled through the cracked window, sending a faint whistle into the dilapidated apartment as Isabella guided me inside.Dust clung to the air, illuminated by the dim moonlight streaming in through the shattered blinds. My steps echoed off the wooden floor, every creak a reminder of how far we'd come. The miles we'd ran with Isabella leading the way while I ran after her blindly."This... yours?" I whispered, fear of Luca creeping in clear every time I closed my eyes as I took in the remnants of a life long abandoned. The place smelled of mildew and neglect, yet beneath the decay, there was something almost... familiar.Isabella nodded, her face shadowed in the dim light. "Before everything that happened, yes." Her voice was brittle, like she was confessing a long buried secret. "I used to come here when everything was too much. To think. It was my.... escape."I turned, taking in the peeling wallpaper, the broken furniture, and the empty wall

Valentina."I belong here, Valentina."The cold air bit into my skin as two men dragged me through the dimly lit hallway, my arms bound behind my back. The echoes of their footsteps bounced off the concrete walls, a steady, ominous rhythm that sent chills down my spine.I tried not to think about what had just happened, about the words that had left Isabella’s lips, but they replayed in my head like a broken record."I belong here, Valentina. I belong with Luca."No. She didn’t mean it. She couldn’t have.My sister was brainwashed. That had to be it. Luca had done something to her, twisted her mind, poisoned her against me. There was no way she had chosen this life, chosen him.She had loved Matteo. I knew she had. We'd talked about it, whispered her fears and hopes late into the night when we were younger. She had dreamed of eloping with him, finding freedom together.Childish dreams. But her dreams. That wasn’t the same woman who had stood before me.Luca's men said nothing as they

Me.Luca's words cut deep, sharp as any blade, but I refused to let them sink in. He stood there, his green eyes gleaming with that dark, dangerous confidence, expecting me to break under the weight of his revelations. But I wasn’t going to break. Not for him."No," the word came out as a whisper, the cold air making it feel like a vice around my throat as I shook my head. "You're lying."Isabella would never chose him.Luca's smirk faltered, just for a second, before returning in full force. He circled me like a predator stalking its prey, but I didn't flinch. Not this time."You think I'm lying?" He taunted, his voice smooth like velvet. "You think Isabella would choose Matteo? You think she loved Matteo?"I didn't think. I knew it.And that slight slip earlier confirmed it.My heart pounded so forcefully in my chest that I was scared it was ab
