When I opened my eyes, the world outside my window was grey; dusk had fallen, I thought hazily, wondering for a while what I was doing in bed.

Shouldn’t you be in the kitchen, supervising dinner? I asked myself tiredly, wondering why my head felt so woozy.

I raised a hand to my head as the room seemed to dip when I opened my eyes. I felt unwell and disoriented. As my mind cleared gradually, it all came back in a rush; the gaudy Fun Fort being delivered and set up that had made me furious leading to my showdown with Lucien. I must have fainted at the time because, after that, I remembered the doctor who had examined me, a grumpy old man who had been surprisingly gentle.

He had been agitated to know that I had not had a proper examination once I had discovered that I was pregnant.

How could I tell him that I would rather have lost the baby?
