ARIANA

ROSSI RELATIVES LIKED TO SHOW off no matter the given event.

It didn't matter that it was a funeral. Or that said dead man was their cousin five times removed.

I'd seen about five women donning expensive Cartier bracelets and diamond necklaces that cost more than a year's rent in New York, while they wailed loudly over a man they knew next to nothing about.

Especially one who deserved his death.

Of course, not a single tear slipped down their eyes. Whimpers, loud wails, sniffles, and sobs they could do while holding a crumpled Kleenex to their eyes, but they wouldn't be caught dead ruining their flawless make-up.

Papà wasn't a good man, and that was a truth I'd carried with me for years. Perhaps that was why I couldn't manage a single tear at his funeral. Or maybe it was just because I found crying... unnecessary. The deed had already been done. The smartest thing to do was to move on.

I cringed when another loud wail filled the air, this one accompanied by snorts in between. Cristo. What was wrong with these women? One would think he was their lover or a close relation. Many of them flew in from Sicily and Naples. I could guarantee that not one of them had sat down to have a conversation with him in the past. They were merely distant, extended relatives.

Deciding she wouldn't be left out of the show, another woman screamed in pain, clutching her chest like someone had dug a knife deep inside it.

I eyed her with irritation. I was leaving this ceremony with a killer headache in my skull. That was for sure.

For a second, I contemplated joining Papà in his coffin just so I could escape the theatrics, but I squashed the thought when I realized I'd have to be within breathing space of him.

Beside me, my youngest brother sat with a bored look on his face, looking like he'd rather be anywhere but here. Same here, brother.

Just like me, Enzo didn't like Papà, but no matter how many times I asked, he never told me why. I eventually gave up asking, because we were in the same boat.

In my case, I couldn't tell him even if I wanted to.

I reached for his hand, squeezing it lightly in a silent show of support.

He turned to face me, a slight smile reserved for only family tipping up the corner of his lips. I grinned back at him before placing my head on his shoulder. He wrapped an arm around me, his other hand resting on mine.

To the onlookers, we looked like two grieving siblings, but in reality, we were both relieved he was gone.

As if he'd read my thoughts, Enzo said, "He deserved to die."

I nodded in agreement. That I could easily agree with. Rocco Rossi was scum of the earth.

The ceremony droned on for minutes, our relatives' cries acting as a soundtrack.

Just when I was about to throw in the towel and walk out of the ceremony, the priest announced that it was time for the committal.

I jumped to my feet so fast that I'd have fallen had Enzo not held me to his side. I flashed him an appreciative smile as he led me to our Papà's coffin.

The wails only got louder as we went to say our last goodbyes to the dead.

We had to have a closed coffin during the funeral because my cousin, Nicholas, had tortured him beyond recognition for all his sins. All I could say to that was good riddance.

I felt someone come up to my side, and when I turned, I found my other brother there. Matteo. He and Mamà were the only ones wrecked by Papà's betrayal. Understandably. Matteo had been closer to him than the rest of us. They'd arguably been best friends, so Papà's treachery came as a shock to him.

I slipped my hand into his, squeezing it the same way I squeezed Enzo's, only Matteo needed the comfort. He squeezed back, throwing an arm around Mamà, who stood on his other side.

I shivered slightly as a wave of cool breeze hit my face. It was the perfect weather for a funeral, setting the mood for the somber air that had fallen over the solemn crowd.

Together, we were the perfect, mourning family.

If only they knew I wished I was the last thing he saw before he took his final breath.

***

I shrugged off my coat, handing it to the maid that stood by the front door to collect everyone's coats as they came to say their condolences for the umpteenth time.

Mamà had returned home immediately with Matteo, unable to bear everything that happened. Enzo and I stayed behind for appearances' sake until every last guest had left.

I wanted nothing more than to kick off my six-inch heels. Maybe I could have a glass of bubbly champagne in the privacy of my room while taking a bath. I nodded to myself. That was a foolproof plan. It'd be like my little celebration without anyone being none the wiser.

I began my journey up the stairs, and for some reason, I found my feet dragging me in the direction of his office. I hadn't stepped foot in there in years, so maybe this was my closure.

'Or maybe you're a coward for doing this after his death,' a voice taunted.

I immediately tuned it out.

Either way, I was getting my closure today.

I squared my shoulders, taking sure, measured steps to his office, my heels clicking on the pristine marble floors. I paused in my tracks a few feet away from the door when I heard raised voices. One, in particular, sounded like Matteo.

"Get out! He's dead. We don't have to do sh*t!"

His outburst was followed by three successive shots. I ran to the door, throwing it open, panic making my eyes wide.

I paused when I saw a fuming Matteo standing behind papà's desk while Nicholas sat next to him, his gun pointed at a man, who sat on the other side of the desk. Two strange men I'd never met before sat across from them, and they both turned around when I burst into the room.

My heart stuttered in my chest as two heavy gazes landed on me. The two men looked alike with their angular faces, sharp jaws, and generous lips. I immediately knew they were related—probably brothers. One had a wider set shoulder and a five o'clock shadow on his jaw. He also looked older than the other man.

"I change my mind," the older man said without taking his emerald-green eyes off of me. "I'll have her instead," he declared, tilting his head to the side with a cocky air around him.

The way he dragged his gaze over my body slowly and intentionally rubbed me the wrong way. I immediately decided that I hated him.

I scowled at him.

There was something about the way he carried himself that said he was a cocky narcissist.

Immediate red flag. I didn't like such men.

"Like f*ck you will!" Matteo burst out, storming over to my side. "I'm done with this conversation, Niko. Get them out of here," he spat, directing me to the open door.

I'd never heard or seen Matteo this upset before. Papà's betrayal must really be eating him up. I followed him up another flight of stairs until we got to my room.

He threw the door open, gesturing for me to walk in.

"Don't leave your room for the rest of the day. Understood?" He snapped.

I folded my arms behind my back, cocking a brow at him. Did he forget that I was older than him and Enzo?

He sighed, his shoulders dropping. "Sorry, Ari. Just... stay here, okay? For your safety. I have to clean up Father's mess."

My heart melted for him. He was the eldest son, hence the responsibilities of the family now fell on him as the new head of the family. I knew he'd been preparing for this day, but not so soon.

I wrapped my arms around his torso, pressing myself against his chest, silently offering him some comfort. His body sagged against mine, and he tucked his head into the crook of my neck.

"I... f*ck, Ari... he..."

He choked on a sob, his shoulders shaking with tears. I rubbed small circles on his back, letting him purge it all out.

"He ruined our family, Ariana. He's not who I thought he was. He hurt all those... f*ck!"

He cried silently on my shoulder for over five minutes before he pulled away from me. He plastered a weak smile on his face. "You should go get some sleep. I'll go take care of those Russians downstairs."

I returned his smile, squeezing his hand lightly before closing my door, so he could get back to his meeting.

My plan to celebrate was now scrapped.

Mission make Matteo happy again was now in place.

My jaw worked in anger, but I remained silent, letting him get all his anger and frustration out because this time, I did fuck up. “Is this how you plan to take over when I step down?” He spat, his voice deep with anger. He then proceeded to spew rapid-fire Russian at me, displeasure rolling off every syllable. I heaved a sigh, checking the time on my wristwatch to see how much longer I had to endure this form of torture. We still had about ten more minutes to go before he decided he’d said enough.I zoned him out, trailing my fingers over the paperweight on my desk, doing anything at all to distract myself from this one-sided conversation. I mentally listed off all the work I had to get done tomorrow while my father’s voice buzzed incessantly in my ear. ALEKSEI The Italians couldn’t make it any more obvious that they didn’t want us here. It was comical. Really. I leaned back in my seat, eyeing the fuming man in front of me lazily, knowing there was shit he could do about this current situation. I had the documents to prove it, and he had… rage. As I said—comical. “This is bullshit!” Matteo Rossi spat, his eyes blazing with unbridled fury. It was time for round two, it seemed. If looks could kill, he would have obliterated my brother and me, but alas, it couldn’t. “It’s business,” I corrected. “You don’t have to like it to do it. Didn’t your daddy teach you that?” I asked, sinking my teeth into the corner of my bottom lip, knowing I’d hit a nerve. What? Sometimes, I liked to stir shit up, too. Too bad, I wasn’t here to cater to a made man’s feelings. I was here to get my empire back under control before Igor got any more asinine ideas. “Get out!” He hissed, his gaze burning with fury. “He’s dead. We don’t have to do shit!” M

ARIANA I JUST FINISHED DRESSING UP, and I was running a comb through my hair when I heard a knock on the door. It was probably one of my brothers coming to check up on me. I knew how much they were worried that the latest turn of events would affect me. I walked toward the door and pulled it open, bringing me face-to-face with the man who murdered my father. Without thinking, I threw myself into his arms, squeezing the living daylight out of him. He had no idea how much he’d relieved me after killing my father. I had tears in my eyes for the first time in years when I heard the news of Papà’s death. A burden had finally been lifted off my shoulders because of him. His arms came around me a second later as a deep chuckle spilled from his lips. “Oh, I didn’t expect that.” I only squeezed him tighter, and when I felt like I’d shown enough gratitude, I pulled back, stepping away from the doorway to usher him into my room. He walked in, looking so out of place in my bedroom as he pl

ARIANA I SAT QUIETLY ON THE SOFA, watching Matteo pace back and forth in the living room, his shoulders tense. Mamà sat beside me, her shoulders shaking as she sobbed quietly. The Made men and the Russian brothers had left over an hour ago, but Mamà and Matteo still hadn’t gotten over the new development of things. I couldn’t blame them. I was still reeling from everything that had happened. “Matteo, sit down, and let’s talk about things,” Enzo finally said with a tired sigh. Matteo paused briefly to address Enzo. “There’s nothing to discuss. We’re not giving Ari away to them.” “Uncle Frederico is right. We will lose everything.” “Uncle Frederico has no right to talk. Do you think he’d give up his daughters so easily if he were in our shoes?” “We don’t know that. Let’s stop making up hypotheticals.” Matteo scowled down at Enzo. “So, you’re willing to give Ari over to those Bratva bastards?” “Until we can come up with a solution, there’s nothing we can do. This hit us smack

ALEKSEI I STILL HAD A SMILE ON MY face as I tidied up work in my office later that day. Ariana was an enigma. I found her amusing, and that was the last thing I’d expected the day I walked into her father’s mansion. She came as a surprise. A pleasant one. And spoiled, too. I’d done some research on my wife-to-be, and she hadn’t been lying when she implied she lived a luxurious life. It was unsurprising for a Cosa Nostra princess. One whose father had the second-largest stake in their family business before his death. They liked to pamper their daughters until marriage, while their sons were thrust into a world full of blood, betrayal, and guns. She also owned a bridal couture store with a list longer than Hell’s. Her dresses were sought after by the elites in New York. It was safe to say she’d made a name for herself without the backing of her family. Her work spoke for itself. Those were my assistant's words, not mine. He'd done the research on my behalf. “You look like a lov

ARIANA FIVE DAYS. I was getting married to Aleksei fucking Tarasov in five days. In just a few days, I'd be bearing his last name. The bastard didn't think to inform me when he paid a visit to me yesterday. No, he thought it was convenient to just send a note containing his wishes to my home. "I thought we still had a month or so. This is hardly enough time to prepare. We're yet to do anything. We don't even have the invitations ready," Mamà shrieked in full-on panic mode. She loved planning parties, but not on such short notice. "Did I mention that five days is hardly enough time?" She walked out of the living room mumbling to herself as she listed off things that had to be done. "I need to call Maria..." I grabbed the discarded note Aleksei sent to us, scanning my eyes over the typewritten content for the third time. Dear Ariana, I decided it would be best if we could get married soonest. I take it you don't care about the date, so I decided to pick one-Saturday. I'll cover

ALEKSEI MY WEDDING DAY CAME FASTER than I expected, and it was no one’s fault but mine. I’d picked the date myself, after all. I scheduled the wedding earlier because I didn’t want the Italians to find a way or loophole—not that they would be able to. My lawyers made sure of that—out of the wedding. Igor hadn’t been pleased with the news of my marriage, and he’d let his displeasure be known for over thirty minutes. I’d put the call on speakerphone, offering occasional hums to make it seem like I was paying any attention to him. I wasn’t. I was going over the final details of my wedding with Peter, my assistant. The same wedding he disapproved of. Someone was going to have a bitch fit when he found out, but I couldn’t find it in me to care. “The Italians called again to make sure the no paparazzi rule was still intact,” Peter said absentmindedly, finalizing things that needed to be done over the phone. Unlike us, they didn’t rely heavily on the media to paint a picture about t

ARIANA I changed into a sparkly, less bulky white dress for the reception. It rather was ironic considering the color of my wedding dress at the church, but there was no time to make switches now. I swapped out my black kitten heels for black satin Versace platform pumps. The heels were still torture, but they were better than the kitten heels I wore earlier. Aleksei sure as hell didn’t find this as amusing as he had my wedding dress stunt. If anything, he looked like he wanted to be anywhere but here. Finally, there was something we agreed on. The reception area was flawless from the decorations to the seating arrangements. Sparkles of gold and white carried across every inch of the room. Not a single thing was out of place given the short time he had to plan things out. That was the type of efficiency a lot of money got you. The first time Aleksei willingly touched me since the reception began was when it was time for the bride and groom to dance. His large hands fell on my wai

ALEKSEI Bravery and stupidity are the same things; the outcome determines your label. My father had drilled that saying into my head when I was eleven. It all started when I went up against a bigger kid at school for bullying Mikhail, and I got my ass handed to me. I was still just a skinny kid, and he had a group of friends just as beefed up as him. When I told my father, he'd just shaken his head at me and called me a fool. Eleven-year-old me had been furious, and I'd mouthed off to him. Of course, I got my ass handed to me again by Viktor, who my father trained alongside me at the time before Igor finally explained what he meant. "What you did wasn't wrong, Alyosha. ARIANA I was glued to my chair, unable to move a limb long after Reina excused herself to use the bathroom. My head pounded, and it threatened to burst from all the new information it had just gotten. "Get them to talk to their father," Reina had pleaded after she explained her side of the story. For once, I didn't see her as the heartless robot that pranced around with a chip on her shoulder. I'd seen the softer side of her, and it was all directed toward that asshole husband of hers. She cared about Igor and was a ride-or-die for him. With the way she spoke about him, I wouldn't be surprised if she actively put herself in harm's way to protect his life. That thought was further cemented when I asked her why she hated me when we'd only just met at the party. "I don't hate you." My mouth hung open. "And what do you call how you treated me at your house? That was unkind, and not how to treat people you cl

ARIANA I COULDN'T GET PAST the appetizer round from how tightly wound my gut was. I wouldn't be able to keep anything down even if I tried. Reina sat across from me, savoring every bite of her lamb ribs while I stared at her. Never in a million years did I think she would seek me out after the hostile welcome I got from her when we visited, and my instincts told me to prepare for the worst. She couldn't have come for a good reason. I reached for my glass of water to busy myself with anything, so I didn't appear unnerved in front of her. I cleared my throat to get her attention. "So, are you going to say what you came here for, or are you going to make me watch you eat before we begin?" "The latter," she answered easily, going for another bite of food. I glared at her over the rim of my glass. "I have better things to do than to sit here and watch you eat. You know, a real job." "And you assume I'm not fa

ARIANA I DID IT. I let him touch me and make me come, and I. . . liked it. I liked it. Not only did I like it, I begged for it, too, relinquishing all the control in that bedroom to him. Who are you? I stared at my reflection on my blank phone screen. The woman on the screen looked different. I felt different, too. The last decade wasn't the kindest part of my life, and I'd woven through it not trusting men. And it wasn't for a lack of trying. I did. I went on dates, sometimes I initiated the flirting, and very few times, I'd gone in for a peck. It never went past that, though, because I always withdrew first. My therapist said it was a trauma response --- pulling back before they had the chance to hurt me --- and I couldn't deny that she was right. A person very close to me had hurt me irreparably after putting all my trust in him. What was stopping those men from doing the same? It was probab

ALEKSEI I LIED. I remembered every word I said. But, I wasn't lying when I said the Russian had slipped out unconsciously. It was a habit I'd tamed a long time ago - switching between the three languages I spoke whenever I was in a heated conversation with someone or slightly irritated. It wasn't a good look for me because it was tantamount to outwardly losing my cool, and growing up in an environment like mine, it was seen as a sign of weakness, an opening for the predators to prey on you and your emotions. Now, I barely batted an eye when I was heated or irritated, and that was because I'd spent the past decade curbing this bad habit - I succeeded, too - and in just one night, she'd undone all that work. I should've taken it as my sign to disengage and get myself out of the situation before I spiraled, but hours after she'd fallen asleep, I still laid awake next to Ariana, staring down at the soft contours of he

Tiny, purple veins ran up his long, thick length to the pink, bulbous tip that dripped with pearly white liquid. I'd never gone down on a man, but I now understood the appeal some got from it. My skin itched with the same need, a mix of curiosity and desire. And he wasn't lying when he implied his cock was more than a fistful. At least, now I knew where the cockiness came from. It wasn't just small talk - pun intended. "It doesn't bite." He didn't bother to hide how amused he was. "Who knew my cock could render you speechless?" He curled his fist around his girth, stroking up and down, coating his length with his precum until it glistened under his soft bedroom lights.
