"I don't want to be liked, I want to be respected."

Anton Chernikov was sitting in the porch of his mansion on the side of Moscow with a piece of Cigar in his hand. Placing it in between his lips, he inhaled it for a bit before breathing out the smoke, which had mixed into the cold air to create even more vapor in the air. He was wearing a long layered coat with a bit of fur on the back to warm his head. The weather that day was rather forgiving for a Russian winter.
A little far from his sight was the view of his Serval cats playing around, in the yard, chasing each other as they played in the large yard. He found those creatures so amusing, of course, they were gifts from a good friend of his, ones he could not really reject as he was fond of exotic animals as well, so much he hired several specialized workers just to take care of them. In his mansion gathered all sorts of exotic animals from all over the world, both dead and alive, it was the only hobby he had in life, besides that, everything was business for him.
One of the recent business deal he had taken was a marriage proposal. Yes, it was probably one of the craziest transaction he had ever made, it was one done purely on physical impulse. He had heard of Grigory Orlovsky before and the two had been well acquaintance, but he had never thought there would ever come a day where he would be a son in law to that man. Yes, he was a mafia leader, a minor mafia organization, but still an impactful one.
It was like a link of chain, each dots on the link mattered, each of them had their own purpose, one could not simply look down on a certain crime organization just because they are smaller in scale, it doesn’t really work that way. Each mattered, because at one point they were what built the country as well. People know who Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos are, what people tend to overlook are these seemingly smaller players, who actually had much larger impact on a private scale than these public billionaires figure.
It troubled Anton a bit because although he had done his calculations of the benefits he would reap from the arranged marriage, it was partially nerve wrecking for him as well, because it involved a woman. Men are simple creatures, he knew how to handle men well and even certain types of women he was all too familiar with.
Yet this one was slightly different, since the first time Grigory showed him her picture, he felt that something about her was so attractive and eye catching to him, yes she was a beauty indeed, but a lot of Russian women are beautiful as well, so he did not quite understand what it was about this particular woman that caught his attention so intently like that.
He knew that he wanted something a little bit different than the usual lustful attentions and affection women had given him, he knew he did not want to live and spend the rest of his life with an easy woman, this one was said to be a virgin, though honestly he did not mind either if she wasn’t, she still appeared so pure and almost angel like, that he felt so drawn to her.
It was problematic for Anton who had always been taught to guard himself against women for they are the source of destruction for plenty of men. He had some of his friends’ wife testifying against their own husband during tough times to save themselves, some ran away with foreign man to another country, while not all were bad, as he had seen some good examples as well, he was still afraid, and Anton had never been afraid of anything else before.
He had always been a very calm, cold, and rational man. He was capable of doing anything as long as it was advantageous to him, which was the reason why he never wanted to fall in love or use feelings, but there’s this thing called nurture vs nature, though he as an individual had always tried to be logical at any circumstance, being raised with examples of a happy loving parents, who although they did many terrible stuff to other people, were always so genuine and loving to each other and seeing such thing happening in his family, deep down he always knew that he wanted that as well for himself. A partner who would stick with him through life.
He could not allow himself to drown in his own thoughts any further, so he stood up from the porch and walked inside his mansion, where he was immediately greeted by one of his man, he rushed to his side with a concerned expression.
“What is it, Pasha?” he asked the man.
“Madam has arrived, she wants to meet you right away.” He informed with a sweaty palm. Anton rolled his eyes, he was not the kind who would do such gesture often, but when it came to the matter, he was never looking forward to it. Still, he had to pay his respect to her, with heavy steps, he walked into his grand living room where she was already seated with a cup of tea on her hand. She was wearing a full fur coat, and warm pair of trousers with ankle length Chelsea boots which made her appear like an old school, a bit vintage classy lady. It was her style, after all, she could never live without fur coats on her skin, it was always her favorite.
She had her slick black hair tied in a formal bun, her lip was painted in the deepest shade of red possible, her eyes, though they had started to show signs of aging, remained as blue and bright as she was over thirty years ago when she was only a newly mother. Anyone who laid their eyes on her could easily tell that the woman had aged incredibly well.
All those years dealing with the family had made her immune to stress. At that age she was sure there was nothing else that could harm her or shock her. She had her fair share of struggles in the past, it was time for her to enjoy peace in her life, but of course, she could never fully retire, not when she heard that her only son had made a life changing decision, which was not even told to her by himself.
“Hello son, I see you are starting to smoke again. Don’t pick up your father’s habit, dear. You know it’s going to age you horribly.” She advised out of sheer concern. He put off the cigar and walked toward his mother, who was smiling at him, trying to make sense of what was actually going on in his wicked mind. Yes, even his mother knew what kind of man he was and she still couldn’t get over the shock she felt when she realized that he was doing such reckless, or as she called it, impulsive action, considering his personality.
Though as an elegant lady she always made sure to put on a slight façade over her image and never reveal one hundred percent of her thoughts and intentions.
“Mama, I wonder what might be the reason for your visit this time? It’s so unlikely of you to come and visit me. You’re supposed to be spending your time somewhere in the United States with your new company and everything else that you left Russia for, mama.” His tone was calm but his words were piercing.
“How’s that American man treating you? I hope he treats you well and shower you with the lavish lifestyle you are so used to having.” He continued. His mother, Maria stared at her own son in disbelief, she had no idea how it was possible for him to become such a disrespectful man at such a short amount of time. She guessed allowing him to take over his late father’s business in Russia had gotten into his head. Yesterday he still needed his mother’s guidance and then suddenly he was talking back to her like that.
“There is absolutely nothing wrong in me visiting my own son, beside, I have a matter to talk to you about.” She thought what good would come had she forced the matter too far, his son was not the kind who would soften up just because she asked him to, he was clever and cunning, sometimes it terrified her a little, but she still had the upper hand, after all, she was his mother.
Maria could no longer hold her intention and strain the conversation way too far from its original context, she knew she needed to tell her son straight away about her opinion.
She pulled her bag close to her and reached out inside, trying to find something, a few seconds later, she pulled out a picture of a young woman he had seen before.
“This woman, I heard she’s Orlovsky’s only daughter. If she had no business with us I would have never even cared about her, but I recently heard you made a marriage deal with her father, Grigory. Is that true?” she questioned as if she wished deep down it was all just a mere fabricated lies the men had made to bring down her son’s reputation, yet when Anton slowly nodded his head in confirmation, she could have sworn her legs turned into puddle as she instantly sat down on the couch again.
“My son, what are you thinking!?” she raised her voice ever so slightly.
“The Orlovsky are no good, you should have chosen a family that’s more suitable to ours, someone who has higher prestige, some of my friend’s families have beautiful daughters I can arrange you with, why this woman you have never even met!?”
He raised his hand to stop her from speaking any further.
“Mother, it is none of your business. Now, if you’ll let me.” He rose from his seat and walked away from his mother without saying anything else.
"Every woman is a rebel."-Oscar Wilde-***Ana was seated in front of the vanity mirror, beside her was Dana, her caretaker who had been caring for her since she was born. The elderly woman gently tapped her shoulder while looking in the mirror alongside her. A proud smile was plastered on her face. “Look at you, as youthful as the day you turned seventeen. It seems that your face had stopped aging. You look as beautiful as your mother, you will definitely stand out tonight. Everyone will look at you and admire you. My beautiful dove.”At the same time, Ana’s face was hiding worry, behind her small, forced smile was a young
"A jealous man always finds more than he is looking for."-Madeleine De Scudery-***After Ana and Alexander was out of sight, Anton turned to Grigory who was seated right beside him at the end of the table, for he was the host. He leaned his body over and lowered his voice as he asked the question which had been bothering him since his arrival.“That guard who just went with her right now, who’s he?” Grigory had no idea why he would ask such question, he did not think Anton would notice Alexander so soon.
"Siblings, children of the same parents, each of whom is perfectly normal until they get together."-Sam Levenson-***Ana had just arrived back from one of her intern work when she suddenly heard Alexander calling out to her name. It had been nearly two weeks since the party with Anton and she had been so busy with her newly built career that she had not been able to spend much time at home and when she did, she mostly just ate dinner, took shower and sleep with barely any time for long interactions with her family. For some it might be a torture but for her, she had had some pretty quiet and peaceful two wee
"You have to be possessive about who you love"-Sushant Singh Rajput-***Ana was standing in front of her dressing mirror trying to figure out what she was supposed to wear for the night, among her collections of the finest quality dresses, she still found it difficult to pick what to wear sometimes. She pulled out a few clothes from her hanger and was so focused on the clothes she had not realized that Alexander had entered her room and was standing right outside her closet door. Of course, he did not come in without permission because she had previously told him to check on her since she needed his opinion.
"The more you care, the more you fear."-Wayne Gerard Trotman-***Ana did not know how she was supposed to response, somehow his words made her feel slightly uncomfortable. She felt like it was time for her to go home since her meal was also finished. She politely thanked him for the night and stood up.“Thank you for the meal, Anton, but I need to leave now I remember I still have something to do.” She was about to walk away when he suddenly grabbed her hand, stopping her in her track. She turned to face him, her eyes met his gaze and found displease within them. It was only expected
"We accept the love we think we deserve."-Stephen Chbosky-***Anton was walking back and forth in front of a bookshelf in the library within his manor. It was not exactly one of his favorite room to be at, he did enjoy going there to read or just unwind himself from all the noises and chaos of the world. However, that day he had a rather different reason to be there, he was seeking some Dostoevsky and Tolstoy pieces from his collection. It had been a while since he read them and he was not exactly sure where they were. He wanted to make sure when Ana came there he could lead her straight to the pieces instead of them just wondering around seeking for it together like a fool. When he eventually found it, he marked it in his mind and pulled out
"A good friend keeps your secret for you. A best friend helps you keep your own secrets."-Lauren Oliver-***Galina Vetrova was playing ‘The Lonely Sheperd’ on her cello in the comfort of her living room. She had never been fond of playing inside a music room because it felt a little too formal for mere practice and she would much rather let her music flown freely wherever it desired to. She had always been fond of the cello. In a world filled with so many superficiality, she found her peace in the instrument. As she played, suddenly her Ragdoll cat Maria jumped over to her lap and she stopped abruptly. She put away the instrument and went to pat her. The cat meowed gently at her, rubbing its nose on her fingers and clinging its head
"Love is an irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired."-Robert Frost-***It was a day Ana wished had never arrived, she woke up that morning feeling heavy, unable to move her body mentally from the bed. It was only until Alexander knocked on her door did she managed to head over to take shower and changed her clothes. Since it was a rather casual visit, she decided to settle with a pale beige pink silk top and some white trousers topped with matching beige coat that she would take off immediately once she was there because the coat did not match very well with her silk blouse. Once she was done getting ready, she walked out from her room to the dining room while Alexander was following her from the back like usual. That morning no one see
"Anyone can have a once upon a time or a happily ever after, but it's the journey between that makes the story worth telling."-Chris Coffer-***It was a quiet and sunny Sunday afternoon, In the vast graveyard lane, Ana was dressed in a soft black gown with two bouquets of red roses in her hand. She slowly walked over to her parent’s graves and gently placed the bouquet on top of the tomb. When Grigory was murdered he was buried right beside his wife whom he loved so much so the two of them could keep each other company even in death. She found it quite touching and to this day, Ana still regretted the fact she could not be there during his burial, which was why every few months she would come and visit their graves and laid a bouquet of fresh roses in their memory while pouring her heart to them, knowing they were probably listening to it.That afternoon was no exception. She knelt down and touched her parent’s tomb
"My love for you is a journey, starting at forever and ending at never."-Anonymous-***Ivan and Mikhail agreed that before they make any decisions they needed to talk with Alexander because as men they prefer to get things out of the way in a straight forward manner without covering anything up. So at night after Ana was asleep, Ivan called him to the room and it was the first time since his arrival there did the three of them was able to gather together in a room.Did not take Alexander long to figure out Ivan wanted to discuss something serious sjuts from his facial expression alone while Mikhail who was the more even tempered out of the two made the perfect balance as a moderator for the conversation. That way there would not be any fights between the men because both were equally as fierce when it came down to their decisions. Although Alexander returned to a mere bodyguard status, the amount of respect he garnered was enou
"Bonds of love never make the wearer weaker, they give him greater strength."-Wonder Woman-***It had been a few days since Ana’s return to the manor with Alexander and they had re-hired him as her personal bodyguard and the relationship between the two of them had been closer than ever before. They were already like a couple even before the crazy incidents which had been going on lately but it became even more noticeable after their return from the countryside house and Ivan, as the head of the family who moved back into the main manor had been watching over her and could not help but feel slightly bothered by it.The relationship between Anastasia and Alexander bothered him so much that his wife saw him awake at night unable to sleep just because he was constantly thinking about his younger sister. He found it slightly disturbing how something that started off as a professional relationship could turn into something per
"Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live."-Norman Cousins-***Maria was sitting in her house drinking tea while reading one of her favorite book by Dostoyevsky while relaxing. It was late in the afternoon and she had finished her work for the day, there was nothing she wanted to do more than to just relax and enjoy herself for a few days before she had to go to Italy for a friend’s son wedding. She did not expect much noise to happen for the day but suddenly one of her maid knocked on her bedroom door and informed her that a man came to look for her.“Does he say where he’s from?” The maid wished she could help more but she shook her head. Maria sighed as she put down her book on the table. Who could possibly come to her house without prior notice? Grabbing her robe from the shelf, she put it on and walked out to the living room where she saw one of
"Being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure."-Bob Marley-***Ivan arrived at the house to find Ana being hugged by Alexander who was making an attempt to calm her down. There was a gun on the floor right in front of them and Ana was sobbing uncontrollably. It was her first time shooting someone and she was not sure how she was supposed to feel. She was scared but Alexander comforted her, saying that everything would be just fine. Ivan was speechless as he saw Anton corpse laying cold on the ground.“Alexander, did you just take these men out yourself?” Ivan asked. Alexander did not reply, instead he focused all his attention on Ana. Ivan noticed her sobbing and approached her as well, asking her what was wrong, but she did not reply. Instead, she buried her face on Alexander’s chest.Ivan did not understand the whole picture yet but he gave an order to his men to clean up

She was still in a deep sleep when she felt him shaking her body with a noticeable force before actually opening her eyes. She always hated one of those scenarios where she did not wake up naturally but instead had someone to wake her up, forcibly and so early. She was still in a daze but the stern expression on Alexander’s face meant something serious was actually happening and she knew it was not the time to be sleeping. She had asked him what was wrong and Alexander seemed upset to even have to announce the news but they had no time to waste.“Listen carefully Ana, Anton has found out your location and he is planning to come here soon with his men. We can’t just move because he’s already coming close and the chance of death on the road is much higher. So, I
"Thinking will not overcome fear but action will."-W. Clement Stone-***The sky had turned dark and rain was pouring heavily from the sky. There was a loud sound of thunderstorms which appeared almost as if it was trying to barge into the room. Ana had only finished dinner and was about to go into her room when another loud thunder sound made her jumped from the ground instinctively. Her heart was racing and she quickly ran to the room and hid under the sheet.Ana was not easily scared but if there was one thing she feared it was the sound of thunderstorm, because he once almost got hit by it when she was on vacation and ever since that she was scared of being attacked by a lighting. Hence why, each time there was a thunderstorm outside she would stay in her room and hide under the blanket, this habit had always been repeated over and over again and even to her adulthood she had not managed to overcome her fear. In all the world, there is no love for you like mine."-Maya Angelou-***It had been a week since she lived with Alexander in safety, she had gotten herself used with the quieter life although she was yearning for the day when she could return safely to her house. No matter what she was still a city woman, there was no way she could survive living in countryside because there were just too much things she enjoyed doing that only the city could offer her. That morning she woke up wearing her cotton gown and walked out from the room to see Alexander making breakfast like usual. It was only since she stayed with him did she know he actually had amazing cooking skill, not on the same level as some professional chefs, of course, but generally his cooking tasted quite good. She started to remind herself of the household dynamics they had been having for the past weeks. In their heart they also silently knew that his death would create a ripple of chaos for everyone. Ivan and Mikhail along with their wives were present and they were standing closer than anyone to the ground. The staff quickly covered it up with soil and they placed his tomb stone above it. The men were not crying at all but inside they were devastated by their father’s death.Although considering their field of work, he would be considered lucky enough to live that long, the way of his death was still unfair to them. He could have died of anything but instead he was killed by the men ordered by his supposedly son in
